LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Still no word on my app waitlisting either....Paul said last interview session of the yr. will be 4/29 and thats when the waitilist will start getting some love.

Big time annoying but hang in there!!!!

i thought they called u the next friday after ur interview.....like in my case i interviewed 2/29/08.....if i dont get a call from stowers on 3/7 or 3-9 then i can assume i did not get in right? if u interviewed in january you should have def. heard by now. (unless you were still missing letters etc)
I wouldn't assume that. It took over 2 weeks for our group to hear whether or not we got in...and I didn't even receive a call, my letter came in the mail about the same day everyone started posting that they had received calls.

Laura had an interview before she took the MCAT. Her scores just came back I believe last week, so now she is being analyzed with group that was complete last week.

No....the calls usually occur on a Tuesday, but that is not set in stone. Sometimes its a Wednesday or a Thursday, sometimes a Monday or Friday....but it is usually Tuesday. It all depends on how busy Dr Stowers is that day. There are times he doesn't call everyone that was accepted, and there are times nobody gets a call, but he makes his best effort to call everyone and I think he usually does.

With you having interviewed on the 29th of Feb, your file will be reviewed this Thursday, March 6.....thus, you could be getting a call on Tuesday the 11th. Now remember that Dr. Stowers DOES NOT ALWAYS CALL!!!!!!! Just because you don't get a call doesn't mean that you did not get it...just ask hoss. He did not receive a call yet he got an acceptance letter. So, like I've told many, many people many, many times, if you don't get a call, wait to see what your letter says.

As for file review days...they are every Thursday. Thus, if you interview on a Friday, your file doesn't get reviewed until the following week on that Thursday, and your potential call would be the next week on Tuesday....so that is almost a 2 week wait. If you interview on a Tuesday, your file is reviewed a couple of days later on Thursday and your potential call would be the following week on Tuesday....so that is only a week you wait.

There is a chain of command each file takes in the review process and that Thursday review is really the first step. There are some other steps in there too before Dr. Stowers gets the recommendation of the adcom about a particular student. Once he has those, Dr. Stowers has the final say so as to who gets accepted. So even if the adcom recommends you for acceptance, he can still say no. And before the question is asked, I don't know exactly how many times he has done that. From what I understand, it has been an extremely low number over these two application cycles, low enough where I wouldn't worry about it.

Oh LMU, Oh LMU, why won't you call me. Oh LMU, Oh LMU why won't you call me.....I sit around all day and night, in hopes to see a message light. Oh LMU, Oh LMUUUUUUUU.....why won't you call me

In January I interviewed and now my files under review, Oh LMU, Oh LMU, why wont you call me 🙁

 😆 😆

Very nice...I like it 😀

Go to sleep Jim. No one needs your ridiculously long posts right now. :meanie:

Or maybe that's just me. SO. TIRED. :boom:

I'm sitting here, :spam: in a can, waiting for the word that I'm going to be granted an interview this season.

I have a book recommendation.... it might be a fun read for you before anatomy. It's called Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach. It's not totally specific to medicine, but still a great read.
Here's the amazon link.
http://www.amazon.com/Stiff-Curious...d_bbs_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204758221&sr=8-2

I also have another question about the HPSP.. In your opinion, what are the top complaints or things people are unhappy about? I've thought about doing it off and on as well, but am just not sure if it would be something that I would want to pursue. I talked to an Air Force recruiter a lot last year before school started, but ended up not doing it at the time. I actually think that I would probably like it just fine, and that the lifestyle would suit me, but its such a huge decision.

Ah, I loved "Stiff" too. Incidentally, I'm working with a friend of mine who works at UT to get our class a tour of the "Body Farm" there during our first year!!!

About HPSP again, here is another web site with the pros and cons. Keep in mind that things are always changing. I think that the biggest problem suffered by HPSP that I've heard of (with my extremely limited understanding) is the lack of information. Sites like this and the HPSP wiki, militarymed, etc are helping though:

I am waiting very impatiently. I check my phone, email, and mail obsessively. I am very sad to say that I am already thinking about reaaplying next year, and which schools to apply too. LMU-DCOM will still be on that list, but I know of a few others schools that I applied to this year that definitely will not be!

Thanks for the info! Can you get our class in on the tour too? If you want help setting the trip up through one of the school organizations, I'm sure SOMA would be willing to help arrange things on the DCOM side. Feel free to PM me.

Speaking of SOMA trips, for those who might be venturing over to NC this weekend, be very careful driving through both Elizabethton and Johnson City. The speed limit is low, and they like to pull people over. Puts a damper on the trip. Also watch for the speed limits on the smaller highways once you get off of 26 and are through Elizabethton. You guys are gonna have a blast, I think they made a bunch of snow a day or two ago, and will probably get to make some Friday night too. Bring lots of warm clothes and some goggles or eyewear in case they are still making snow, it gets cold and hard to see. I'm jealous and wish that I could make it up there. Oh well, I'll stick to skiing here in TN.... 🙂.

I got this emailed to me. It says its true, but who knows.....and who cares...its freaking hilarious!!! Enjoy

This is an actual job application that a 75 year old senior citizen submitted to Walmart in Arkansas .
They hired him because he was so funny.....

NAME: Kenneth Way (Grumpy Old Bastard)

SEX: Not lately, but I am looking for the right woman (or at least one who
will cooperate)

DESIRED POSITION: Company's President or Vice President. But seriously, whatever's available . If I was in a position to be picky, I wouldn't be applying here in the first place

DESIRED SALARY: $185,000 a year plus stock options and a Michael Ovitz style severance package. If that's not possible, make an offer and we can haggle.

EDUCATION: Yes.

LAST POSITION HELD: Target for middle management hostility.

PREVIOUS SALARY: A lot less than I'm worth.

MOST NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT: My incredible collection of stolen pens and post-it notes.

REASON FOR LEAVING: It sucked.

HOURS AVAILABLE TO WORK: Any.

PREFERRED HOURS: 1:30-3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

DO YOU HAVE ANY SPECIAL SKILLS?: Yes, but they're better suited to a more intimate environment

MAY WE CONTACT YOUR CURRENT EMPLOYER?: If I had one, would I be here?

DO YOU HAVE ANY PHYSICAL CONDITIONS THAT WOULD PROHIBIT YOU FROM LIFTING UP
TO 50 lbs.?:
Of what?

DO YOU HAVE A CAR?: I think the more appropriate question here would be 'Do you have a car that runs?'

HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY SPECIAL AWARDS OR RECOGNITION?: I may already be a winner of the Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes, so they tell me.

DO YOU SMOKE?: On the job - no!
On my breaks - yes!

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN FIVE YEARS?: Living in the Bahamas with a fabulously wealthy dumb sexy blonde supermodel who thinks I'm the greatest thing since sliced bread. Actually, I'd like to be doing that now.

NEAREST RELATIVE....7 miles

DO YOU CERTIFY THAT THE ABOVE IS TRUE AND COMPLETE TO THE BEST OF YOUR
KNOWLEDGE
?: Oh yes, absolutely.

I'm sorry Laura....but don't give up on DCOM!!! Work hard during Physics and kill it. Keep DCOM up to date with grades, extra LOR's, a letter of intent, etc. Keep hounding them and let them KNOW you want to be here. People will be taken off the waitlist, you just need to show them that one of those people NEEDS to be you. Don't give up!!!!!!!!

Sorry Laura! That really stinks!! 🙁 I'm still rooting for you though and I agree with everything nd said.

Woah Laura, I was not expecting that. 😕

Like others have said, keep DCOM updated with your new grades etc. Maybe they have reached the point where they have handed out enough acceptances and they are waitlisting most people from here on out. Someone mentioned last year almost 30 people were accepted off the waitlist and I'm SURE you'll be one of them if you keep them updated and let they know that they are your #1 choice. I'm really sorry/pissed to hear that, but keep up the positive thoughts and YEY you have a Lecom-B interview coming up! :luck::luck::luck:

Love ya girl 😍

Thanks guys! everything happens for a reason, and I'm sure this did too🙁

I have been lurking around this thread for a while, but as you can see - this is my first post...

Laura, I am sorry you were waitlisted; it is definitely not the news anyone wants to receive. I was in the same boat as you a few months ago, but I received "the call" a few weeks after being waitlisted. As Nascardoc said, I would just keep the school updated with new grades and such. The waitlist doesn't mean you still don't have a shot!

Like everyone is saying, HANG IN THERE if youre on the waitlist. According to Paul, 27 people were un-waitlisted last year out of a class of 150. That means around 20% of the class was filled just from the waitlist! Furthermore, its important to clarify, as its always been explained to me, that very, very few people are rejected at the interview stage. However, many people are rejected pre-interview. (Obviously, with 2,000+ interviews). Point being: Come April, things can turn around. Finally, its important to note that as the cycle goes along, the time to confirm w/ deposit progessively gets shorter, which speeds up the process for us wait-listers.

Not at DCOM though. Cause they just interview Tuesday and Friday.

i meant she interviewed AT DCOM on a friday, and was accepted AT DCOM one week later, on a friday.

I was waitlisted at DCOM, then accepted to LECOM-B, then taken off the waitlist at DCOM. I really hope that happens for you too LauraDO!

Good advice, and it is true that ~ ~20% of DCOM students in class of 2011 got in off the list.... but know this. I have been applying to med schools the last 2 years and was waitlisted at 5 schools (both D.O. and M.D.), and finally got into a school this year...

So all I am saying is that if you are certain you want to enter med school in the fall of 2008......do not "bet the farm" on the waitlist...make sure you apply ( or i guess this late in the year, applied to some other schools and have better chances there )

Again.......coming from someone who was waitlisted at 5 different schools and didn't get in off of any of those lists......just a thought. Best of luck to you all!

That was my problem too... our wedding is May 3rd. We just had to bite the bullet and drive down to check out some places. If you wait too long there won't be anything left, even though it sucks to already be paying rent when we won't be living there until after the wedding!

Congrats on the wedding!! Our anniversary is May 11th. (don't forget, don't forget...)

Thanks! Haha, well you have 65 days... not that I'm counting to a certain date in May. What number is this anniversary for you?

Must be something about may huh? Our 3rd anniversary is May 7th!

May is a great month.... maaaaaybe because I was born on the 15th, but now it's even more exciting! 😀

December is better...

December 11....4th anniversary (this year)
December 25....Chirstmas
December 26....Birthday

Lots of presents 😛

nah...they can use newspaper, i don't care. If you do, rules state it must be either the comic section or the sports section, otherwise :beat:

And before someone asks, I got just as many presents as anyone else....my parents were good about that. Plus, I could combine the days and get really big stuff......go me 😎

Yep, that was my next question. I'm thinking rather than presents, we should just take a long vacation every year right over his birthday on April 30th, our anniversary on May 3rd, and my birthday on May 15th  . I guess that will have to wait until I'm a real doctor. We are taking a sweet honeymoon cruise to Hawaii this year though :hardy: I cannot WAIT!

Ahhhhh....Hawaii Fond memories. My wife and I went to Maui for a week for our honeymoon and it was incredible. Dolphins, whales, penguins (yes), tropical birds, warm weather, the ocean, actually seeing my wife.....I want to go back. There is no place like Maui. I told my wife when I graduate, we are going back. I can't wait.
