LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got this email today.

Dear Students:

As we get closer to the start of the year one of the issues you need to deal with is medical insurance. The medical school plans are on our web site, but here is the link

http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/benefit_overview.pdf

Because of hospital policies, all medical students are required to have insurance. Unless we hear otherwise you will automatically be enrolled on our policy. If you have another policy and want to request a waiver from our policy you should fill out the following forms by July 15th. That way you will not be billed for the school’s policy.

http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/oms1_health_waiver.pdf

http://www.lmunet.edu/dcom/pdfs/oms1_dental_waiver.pdf

If you do not fill out the form by July 15th you will automatically be billed for the schools policy.

As a side note, we just had 25 students return from DO Day on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. There were only a handful of DO schools sending more students than LMU DCOM. Dr. Stowers also attended. In May we are having the first LMU-DCOM Spring Gala in Knoxville. This is a formal event on a Friday night, organized by the LMU-DCOM SGA. Immediately following the diner there will be a casino night organized by SOMA. And, last but not least, the Student Osteopathic Surgery Association had their first golf tournament last weekend. There were thirty teams made up of students, faculty, and clinical preceptors. It was a top notch event that raised several thousand dollars for local charities. So, as you can see, besides academics, our students have done a phenomenal job of getting SGA and the clubs off to a great start.

A few housing leads in there also!

did you guys mail a check with your housing application or did you call them and pay via credit card?

So I may have found a place. I'm driving up and looking at it next Thursday. I really hope that I like it even a little because right now it's my only option. Did anyone have any luck by just driving around the area to look? Or is that pritty much a waste of time?

Good luck Malisa! :luck: I hope it works out for you guys! We found our house by driving around and saw the "For Rent" sign on the mailbox, but I think that's pretty uncommon. AND congrats on your recent marriage! Ours is in 6 days - I am SO excited!!! Did you have to give DCOM a heads up about your name change? I'm wondering how much time I'll have to do that....

That is how I found my condo to rent. We were just minutes from turning around and going to a resturant in order to make the final decision between going with a house I (I also believe my wife) didn't like or rolling the dice and trying to go to come back for a second time. As we were driving back to the main road we passed these condos and I made the call with complete expectation of being turned down.

This probably is rare, but it happens. Goodluck!

I just emailed Paul Carney to ask what I needed to do and he said he'd take care of it. So I guess after you change your name just email him and tell him.

I hope I have some good luck finding a place. Maybe/hopefully I will like the place I am going to be looking at and won't have to worry about driving around.

YEY Malisa! I'm sure the house will be great! 🙂

Oh wow, you're getting married in 6 days! How exciting! 😀

Are y'all going on a honeymoon before school starts?

Congrats to you and the others, good luck on the housing as there are plenty new houses being built.

Ahhh, I know!! Thanks 😀 We are going on a Hawaiian cruise from May 10th to the 17th. I figure it's the last vacation I'm getting in the next decade, so we are going to do it right  I'll bring pics to orientation 😛

Oh a Hawaiian cruise sounds nice. I went on a cruise too. I got kinda bored being on the ship for so long though. We had a lot of at sea days on our 8 night cruise. Hopefully you won't get bored.

I hope not too! We booked a few shore excursions though to prevent that - a helicopter tour of the big island, a luau in Old Lahaina, a limo trip up the Road to Hana, tour of Pearl Harbor and USS Arizona, surf lessons on Kauai - plus my birthday is May 15th while we are on board. We actually made our honeymoon one of our registries which allowed us to get a penthouse suite and afford some luxuries that, believe me, we definitely couldn't afford otherwise! So hopefully we don't run out of things to do! It is a honeymoon afterall 😍

Which cruise line did you take and where did you guys go? We are going on Norwegian, but I'm not too fond of this whole "freestyle cruising" thing - on my first cruise, ALL the food was included! I guess this is the direction all the cruise lines are going now though. 👎

Hey current students, what doc do you guys use from primary care up there? My titer for the MMR came back funky and now I need to get 2 shots a month apart for that. I'm moving up there in two weeks though. I'll have to get my shots done there, so I'm trying to find some good doc's to take of me. Thanks!

You can probably just set that up in the clinic here in the building. Super convenient! 👍 I'm sure they will talk to you guys about it during orientation.

Luckies. My honeymoon will be the drive to Tennessee (married on Saturday, orientation on Wednesday)

Awwww... well you are smart not to blow a ton of money right off the bat! All that really matters is that you get to spend time with your new spouse and it sounds like there will be PLENTY of time for that on your drive! I'm sure there will be many opportunities for vacations when you are rolling in the big bucks :hardy:

Or save some cash over the next year on go on your honeymoon during the summer between 1st and 2nd year 😉

Let the clinic know what shot you need because I am in need of a series from that immunization and they are hesitant to order it unless they know they will use it all (they have to order 10 vials). Other than the clinic, it has been hard to find doc's in the area that can give this shot.

What does freestyle cruising mean? I went on Carnival. We went to panama, belize, and costa rica. We did an awesome excusion in Costa Rica (ziplining through the rain forest, tour of a banana plantation) we signed up for snorkeling in Belize but it was super early and at the last minute we decided we didn't want to get up, and nothing planned in Panama because they didn't have any really fun sounding ones. I loved that all the food was included because we would eat all the time. Since we would get bored we spent too much money in the casino too.

Oh and it sounds awesome that you are getting a penthouse and what not. We had an extended balcony room that I thought was pritty nice. Does your room have a hot tube? That would be really fun 😉

freestyle cruising is that you can do whatever you want at whatever time...you're not limited to a certain schedule, such as a show at this time, dinner at that time, etc

More future fun stuff to get in involved in when school starts...

I was talking to one of my friends in the Oncology Club who is heading up Relay for Life in the Fall, and she wanted me to give y'all a little info as well as give out her email in case you want to participate on the team.

Relay for Life is an event to raise money for the American Cancer Society and also a celebration of those who have won and a remembrance for those who have lost their fight against cancer. It goes from 7:00pm at night to 7:00am the next morning on August 22nd and 23rd, and consists of a relay of people walking one hour shifts. In addition to the actual relay, there are sites set up for each team where we sell stuff to make money for ACS and have games and things for the kids. Because its so early in the semester, its a great way to get to know your class as well as ours and make a difference in the community. I participated last year and had an absolute BLAST! I remember walking around the track going over anatomy of the arm and hand with several friends and eating cookies... haha.. I know that maybe doesn't fun now, but it is!

The overall theme of this year's relay is "Celebrate, Remember, Fight Back", with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being our proposed team theme (Ninjas 😛irates 0, lol) and our slogan being something like "Fight Cancer, Give it Shell". We'll need people to walk, sell stuff, run games, and generally sit around having an awesome time all night for 12 hours. C'mon.. Did you think you were gonna sleep in med school??? Psshhhht.

So if you want to get into it early by selling luminaries or torches (stay lit all night in remembrance/support of those with cancer), or just let her know that you are willing to help out in some capacity, contact [email protected] . 🙂🙂🙂🙂

I believe the recommended lenders list is done! Clicking on the link for "Recommended Lenders" on the LMU site brings me to this site now: http://www.ecmc.org/link/003502/

I got an email saying that the clinic is only for faculty/staff at the moment........Guess I'll find a doc when I get there, let me know if you find one. If not I might just be making a couple of trips back to FL.

This is really important....when do we get our LMU email addresses? This is really important b/c i need to add LMU as one of my facebook networks. hahahahahahaha

Just wanted to get some input from the 1st yr students on the recommended lender list...Any preferences out there? What did you base your decision on?

We were told the clinic is for staff/faculty/students of LMU (undergrads as well as med students) and their families, students get treated there all the time. If they have changed that they didn't tell us, in fact they told us to stop pimping the docs in the halls for treatment.😀😀😀
PM me if you want the clinic contact info and I'll send to you.

so how much money do we have to take out in private loans to cover the COI budget? i am confused on how much we can get from federal loans.

Like Shasta said, the clinic is also for current students as well. Since you guys aren't here yet, that may be why you were told what you were. But talk with Paul Carney and see if you can start that vacc once school starts so you can use the clinic here. That would be your best bet, IMO.

Orientation

Just wanted to get some input from the 1st yr students on the recommended lender list...Any preferences out there? What did you base your decision on?

Myself, I went with Chase for the Stafford Loans and EdAmerica for GradPlus, for both OMS-I and OMS-II years. The nice thing about both of them is that there are no origination fees with either of them, which is nice. B/c of the economy right now, there aren't a ton of perks like we had last year, so going thru the options is a bit easier now. As for the GradPlus, only EdAmerica has no origination fees right now. For stafford, right now Chase and 1 or 2 others have no origination fees, so I would pick one of those myself, IMO.

so how much money do we have to take out in private loans to cover the COI budget? i am confused on how much we can get from federal loans.

For the amount to borrow, this is my breakdown....

Subsidized Stafford = $8,500 for the year ($4,250 per semester)
Unsubsidized Stafford = $34,222 for the year ($17,111 per semester)
GradPlus = $10,843 for the year ($5,421 per semester)

someone said earlier it was during orientation

How do we fill out that paper in our matriculation packet that asks for our local Harrogate address? Should we just put student housing?

They said we could fill it out at orientation and turn it in then. 👍

which form are you talking about?

There is a form called "student address form" that was included in the matriculation packet. It just asks for your local address.

Well, I am in need of a tv and I just pulled the trigger on a 1080 42inch phillips LCD tv for $730 including tax and shipping!!

use coupon code SELECT-0408 at http://www.outlet.philips.com/

it is refurbished, but not a bad deal since it runs for $1600 at best buy (excluding tax)

just thought I would give someone a heads up if they are in the market for a new tv!

Pat is mailing out our award letters this week (mine was sent out yesterday) as long as you've filled out your FAFSA. The award letter will tell you how much money you're eligible to take out for Stafford (subsidized and unsubsidized) and Grad Plus. 👍 Once you know how much money to take out for each type of loan you can apply for them online.

Yeah, I got mine today.. now I get to acquire lots of debt, woohoo!

Just as a heads up to you guys....Pat Peace informed us that EdAmerica may be changing their origination fee to 3% within the next few days or so, so you may want to jump on that while you can. If you can't and it changes, you should be able to increase your loan to cover that charge, but either look at your info you just got or email/call Pat to be sure and find out what you need to do in order to make that increase.

1,000th post!!!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!!!!    :zip:

I will never be in triple digits again 🙁 :meanie:

Our wonderful thread has been dead today. I am sadly addicted and check back often to see what people are saying.

I hope I get my financial aid stuff in the mail today so I can start signing up for my loverly debt. It will also help me set up a budget and what not.

I think I'm going to go by the school tomorrow and drop off my paperwork too. I'll be up there looking at my one housing option. A nice road trip with my best friend. Then we are driving to VA to look at the school she just got accepted to (law school). Luckily we will only be three hours away which worked out better than I ever thought it would.

Yep boring post 😛
