ah...when are you heading down to DCOM??? Thought maybe we could meet during summer since i will be in chicago for a few weeks.

Just a heads up for those of you in the Chicago area: I got my letter today.

I will be crying myself to sleep tonight.

Keep one thing in mind to all of you signing yourself into over $200,000 worth of debt over the next 4 years. If you don't specialize and do rural family medicine this is only maybe 2 years of income that you are borrowing. Yes it will take longer than that to pay it off but you will be a friggin doctor!!! Come out here, start your dream and worry about the money when you are required to (and actually have the ability) to pay it off 😀

Keep another thing in mind, if you get out here and party and fail two major classes you will be repeating your first year (and borrowing the money to repeat it)...can you say Class of 2013? Moral of the story...have fun but pass your exams...

I can't wait to meet you all coming in next year, you are going to have a blast! There is no feeling like walking through those doors the first morning of the first day of orientation...I still remember that awesome feeling!

I am definitely interested! I think there are afew other chicagoans here too such as rockchalkjdoc

I am heading down probably around july 12th or so, but I am basically free until school starts!

Plus, I heard there are many opportunities to pay off your debt once graduated such as making a contract with a hospital, giving a year for year service, or moonlighting during residency

cool...we'll need to put it together...now who else wants to join us???

Okay, my award letter finally came today :hardy: I started filling out the Chase Loan app and it turns out that they won't let you file until May 9th... ugh.

I have a random almost meaningless question: Does anyone know if Verizon phones work in the student apartments? I know that Verizon works fine on campus and does not work at all in Middlesboro, but I was just curious about how reception was inside student housing. thanks

You pretty much have to stick your head out of a window or go outside is the way my friend's works. ATT seems to work fine on both sides of the tunnel.

YAY for the last final of undergrad in one hour

Wish I was still in the windy city... Oh well, I guess I will have to wait until I get to Harrogate to meet everyone!

To DanaRenee and anyone else interested, I just called the school and letters have been mailed out to the last of the interviewees. I was told to be expecting them between today and Monday. :scared:(biting nails...):scared:

That is too weird, JoshKent! I was just thinking of you and of course coming to SDN to see if you had gotten a phone call or anything!!

UGGGHHHHHHH! Now my heart is beating really fast. I'm assuming they made no mention of anyone calling to those accepted . . .

Crossing our fingers for you guys.

So for all of you that have been accepted - did all of you get phone calls? or is that just a courtesy they do if they have the time? ie. if we don't get a call should we assume the worst?

I've heard that not everyone gets a call. So you can still be accepted even if you didn't get a call.

Oh and by the way it looks as if I will have somewhere to live while in school! YAY

She told me that Dr. Stowers was not able to make any phone calls, so everyone will be notified by letter.

Oh man..... I'm literally sitting here at the computer watching the mailman drive down my road. Will there be anything from DCOM???? 😱

She told me that Dr. Stowers was not able to make any phone calls, so everyone will be notified by letter.

Thanks for the info - that makes me feel a lot better.

I guess we will be racing to the mailbox this afternoon after work!

I interviewed april 11 also and am extremely anxious for the mail to come today! Best of luck to everyone! :luck:

Not to be too personal, but so I know who you are - what did you wear to the interview - that way I can put a face with my good luck vibes! 😍

Haha I know who you are! I was the one who wanted to go to Cumberland Gap... black suit, blonde curly hair. And just for the record- I'm pretty sure the mailman never came today and I normally get my mail around 2! They should notify us by email instead of snail mail!

alternate list... I hope you guys get better news. I'm pretty bummed.

Awwwww. that is a bummer! but it's not over. Did you read the posting by soccerchicoc on April 24th #3115. she was kind enough to post the standard email she was getting back about the alternate list.

Of course, it's just my personal opinion, but I'm thinking you fit into at least 1 but probably 2 of those priorities that's listed.

What is plan B for you guys?

I'm with you - they could save some postage and just email it but it does kinda make it - I don't know - more "official" to get it by letter and be able to hold it in your hand and read over it again and again - that is if it's good news . . .

Alternate list it is... I'm with you Josh Kent!

I'm so sorry to hear it!!

That makes me nervous - 2 out of 7 of the April 11th interviewees are on the alternate list that we know of. but Like I told JoshKent - don't give up - that's what they keep saying on this forum - it's not over yet.

What is your plan B?

Plan B= reapply. I'll wait til June to start that process again if I have to. I'm on the alternate list at LECOM-B too... stressful. Be sure to post DanaRenee when you check the mail today! :luck:

Just wanted to say :luck:Hang in there!:luck: to all you folks on the alternate list. I'm pulling for you all. 🙂

that's not meaningless! and it is certainly important, especially because of the cell phone contracts

on the same note, what can you guys say about SPRINT service in the student apartments?

Thanks

to everyone else...hang in there...i was on the waitlist too...but im now....so it can happen to you too!

ND can comment more on Sprint, but my suggestion is to lose them and lose them fast. I want to see that company succeed since their HQ is in my "hometown", but they are so poorly run and so far behind the curve, I just don't see it happening.

I don't think their service in NE TN is good...at all. I mean, Harrogate is more than 300 feet from an interstate highway. 🙂

It's hard to lose them when I have 1500 anytime minutes
night and weekends starting at 5pm...yes..5pm!
unlimited incoming
unlimited data and internet
unlimted PAM
free picture mail
unlimited texting

and all I pay is $28 WITH taxes!

and plus, their service in the chicago area is amazing..no reason for me to complain yet

I'm also thinking of maybe getting the airave...basically a box you put in your house to increase reception

I have absolutely no doubt that Sprint's service is decent in a large city.

The problems start when you get more than a few miles from an interstate in my experience. I dropped them many years ago, but I know ND has had more recent experience with them here in TN, so I'll let him comment.

With the price you're getting, I'm surprised you're not one of the customers they "fired".

After seeing what you get for 28 bucks, it's not hard to figure out why they are going down fast. (well, and the fact that they fired their CEO, but then gave him like 40 million, plus 84000/month for the rest of his life as a going away present).

Wow! How did you manage a deal like that?

in regards to the "fired" customers...those customers were getting paid to have sprint..basically they had an average of over $4000 in credits...and they were fraudently obtained...so yes..they deserved to be fired....in fact..they are lucky Sprint didn't charge them with fraud...

also, the others who got fired where calling in over a 100 times a month consistently for a few months literally begging or asking for freebies from reps

I have a sprint employee plan with many, many add-ons---which basically get added on every time you renew your contract for another 2 years......i've had sprint for over 9 years...so loyalty comes long way

sprint lets you "negotiate" your contract...so after 2 years..you ask for something else.....get it...sign the contract...and you get to keep that...in another 2 yers..another freebie

this is why I think sprint rocks!

they are way ahead of the curve when it comes to technology

but their CS needs a little bit of help!

I have Sprint, and its pretty ok on both sides of the state line.. sometimes around 9 o'clock at night if you are going from the TN side to the KY side, I even have service in the tunnel, lol! I just wish I could say the say thing about the apartments. I've noticed when visiting my friends there, that my cell phone will only work if right next to the windows (for texting and hearing calls coming though.. if you actually want to talk to the person who called you, you have to run downstairs and talk to them outside. I'm pretty sure that its not just Sprint that has that problem... I've noticed most people in the apartments have the same problem. There are landlines set up in the apartments though. Maybe its just my phone and yours will work ok.

how much are you guys taking out in loans? I'm looking at the financial aid packet sent, and it has a grand total of 55k. Should I take out the entire 55k? I'll be living at the LMU med school apartments and can't cook. haha

I would say yes, take the whole loan.. if you have extra loan money left, you can always turn it in at the end of the year... or save it to do some out of state fourth year elective rotations.

got mine! i'm so relieved to have school paid for this time around! i don't care if it takes 20 years to pay off. i CAN'T WAIT to get down there! i'm planning on living in middlesboro, and to all you new faces, WELCOME! i've been on hiatus...studying. i'm so excited!😍

i'm planning a 1st year/2nd year barbeque, date TBA. it'll be a bring your own drink and meat. 🙂 :hardy:

I am on the waitlist, and, because I'll have to take out loans for everything, if I get in I am going to need to get a car that has a warranty on it so I don't have to estimate how much money I'll be spending each year in car repairs. Anyone know if it is possible to get student loans to cover a vehicle? Or a way to consolidate a reg. loan with my student loans?

I'd also like to add that this is the most helpful forum I have ever seen and I really appreciate all the help from current students and applicants. I don't post on here very often but I check it and read the posts everyday. The attitude and friendliness of everyone that is part of DCOM is one of the main reasons why I hope to get in off the waitlist. thanks again everyone!!

In their cost of living analysis, they do factor in money for car maintenance, gas, oil changes, etc. However, car payments ARE NOT included in that (and they're not at any school). Basically, you will have to adjust your budget to factor in a car payment. For myself, I pay both rent and a car payment out of my loans while my wife pays the mortgage on our condo in Chicago (sell you dang thing!!!) and her car payment. Once the stupid condo sells, the rent will no longer be paid out of my loans, so then I will only pay my car, along with extra food, other expenses, and pay down my credit card. So even though cost of living budgets do not include car payments strictly, there are no rules saying what you can't use the money towards a car payment, you just won't get extra money for it. You will have to work your budget around to include it.

This loan stuff is kinda stressful. Can't sign up for Chase until may 9th. Tried signing up for EdAmerica for the GradPlus and for some reason my pre-approval was suspended! I have to call and fax them some stuff but it's Saturday so I can't do anythign until Monday 🙁 I know my credit is good because I just checked it two weeks ago. I'm thinking that my name changing is what is causing the problems so that really sucks how much trouble getting married and changing your name is!

Oh and like usual I'm afraid I'm going to screw something up.

I wouldn't stress too much over it, I had the same thing happen to me w/ EdAmerica and it wasn't because of marriage it was because they wanted me to fax in my drivers license and something else silly. Pat is a tremendous help in all this I would make sure you keep her in the loop and you will be fine. I know at this stage it's hard to not panic and think you will mess something up loose your seat in class and have to start all over..we have all been there...just hang in there and be sure to contact the school if you have any problems. They are there to help...it's time to start utilizing all the wonderful staff us 2011'ers have been talking up so much!!! Your seat will be here for you and all this paperwork c*#@ will get done.

Rule #1: No talking of video games during test time, especially if they are fun. The only thing you can talk about are crappy experiences, like pelvics (if your female) or rectals (if your male). You may only talk about things that suck.

Thank you for your cooperation 😉

😆😆 Awwww hang in there!

Maybe this will help: only 45 more days and then you & the wife be enjoying your summer vacation . . . with me! 😀

I'm sitting in my back yard, the grass freshly mowed. The grill is slowly cooking some stuff, its a beautiful day. Gentle, slow breeze, about 75 I
suppose. Looking over the pastures and hills, the horses are drinking water
from a pond. I have been here now for a few months, I love the area. Almost like Alaska in someways. I live right near a dirt race track, and wow, they really crank it up on the weekends.

I've been working for SGS minerals, I do about 130 bomb calorimetry tests each night from 6pm until 7am. Great friends at work as well. I shop in KY, buy gas in KY and sleep in TN. I drive past the campus each morning. We all know as the days get longer, the sun arises earlier. Well now, as I leave work and exit the tunnel, its a little lighter outside and I drive by the school again. Its incredible.

I am going to be a surgeon in a rural environment and it is the best moment in my life. My lady and children are coming from Hawaii. Though I miss Hawaii, I am glad to be back home in Appalachia. I too am an older student, and you better believe I'm set on saving lives. Though I've crabbed in Alaska, surfed 20+ foot waves, the Lord has given me so much....but it is this day, that I have prepared for....DCOM. The faculty and system are incredible. I hope everyone is ready, real ready. Aloha!
