LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
uh oh......I guess I have an excuse for that iphone now...but I can't stand ATT!!!

I have an iPhone! Got it for christmas. Even though I didn't say I wanted one and I'm not a religious Apple person, I love it! Plus the new ones are going to be awesome and cheaper! And they have applications for physicians charting you can add!

Haha that explains my attitude about weddings completely! I was so glad to get it over with.

But anyways how was the wedding? and when is your honeymoon?

It was good! Thanks 😀 Only minor mishaps - my flowergirl and ring bearer were boy/girl twin 2-year-olds that had to be bribed with fruit snacks to walk down the aisle. My flowergirl dropped her fruit snack half way down and went to pick it up, and just decided to sit down and have a picnic, haha! I'm SO glad it's done with - awesome day though. We are leaving Saturday for Hawaii - MUCH needed vacation!

You need to post some wedding photos on Facebook!

I may just go that route

That is EXACTLY what my husband said - he's "one step closer to the iPhone."

Guys,

If you're waitlisted, I would seriously write a "letter of intent" (you can search SDN for the topic) and send it to the dean, as well as your interiviewers if you have their addresses. Having a list that is not ranked is a great advantage to those of you who are determined.

A friend of mine sent one letter a week to these people and it paid off. He got into Tulane from deep on the alternate list. Another friend of mine just got into Georgetown using similar tactics.

I wouldn't recommend it weekly, but remaining "visible" to the dean an your interviewers will help you greatly.

Good luck!

I want to second this..send in a letter of intent to the school you want to attend and be prompt to respond to all e-mails sent to you from the school. This shows your interest and keeps you in the running in my opinion. As bouspret says don't send weekly letters don't call weekly no matter how much you want to. I have been told, from a reliable source, that those on the wait list last year that called/e-mail the admissions office every other day are not here this year for a reason. That may work at some schools but I would not recommend it here. I responded to all e-mails sent to me by DCOM in a timely manner and that is it, but I think a letter of intent is a good idea too.

Also as far as the school only accepting people off the wait list from the local area and state, yes they do place a preference on local applicants but I am from Arizona (and I was wait listed) and I we have people from California that got in off the wait list as well. It seems for our class the calls were just later in the application/wait list cycle (I got my call in the first week of June)

Final piece of advice..for now, if you are not accepted this year and are reapplying or are just here stalking and applying for the Class of 2013....get your application in early, they don't suggest this on every schools web site for no reason. An example given to me was if you submit your AACOMAS in January they don't get it here until mid to late Feb, if you get an interview that will be at least 2 weeks later because of scheduling so now you interview in March...by then the class is usually full or very near it and you are wait listed. January application you don't interview until March....get your applications in early like June and you will increase your chances of getting in somewhere dramatically. This applies to all schools not just DCOM. If you are wait listed I would have your AACOMAS ready to send in but it wouldn't hurt to wait a bit, our class had wait list movement into the 3rd week of July.

Good Luck!!!!!

I do too..but not with att

Im kind of bummed about not being able to use sprint...I really like them and i think they provide great service...i also love how I can tether my phoen to my laptop at anytime and use the internet...no hunting for hotspots

iPhone is sweet, my main problem with it though: no insurance. Can't get it. And if you crack the screen it's $250 out of pocket get it fixed. Which once you add tax and what not, is pretty much what you paid for the new phone (4G anyways).

Yes, I am a little bitter...

yea...i agree..they are darn expensive...but att will start offering rebates on them now

Oh no! That sucks and I of course would probably end up doing that. I always get insurance (or extended warranties) on anything expensive and electronic I buy because you know at some point its going to get broken or messed up. I will have to carefully look through all of their (ATT) phones. I think they probably have some other good choices besides iPhone.

sprint is coming out with the samsung instinct...dubbed the iphone killer

but honestly..who are we kidding here? no phone will ever kill the iphone

You can use the iPhone internet access anywhere there is a signal using Edge. You don't have to use the wireless hotspots always.

doesn't it cost extra to use PAM? pam is phone as modem

what I am talking about is actually tethering my device to my notebook, hence using my notebook for the internet instead of using the built in iphone browser or treo browser

I still have Sprint and its really not that big of a deal. Why don't you wait till you get here to decide? Like I said, nobody has good service inside the apartments, regardless off what company they are with.

thanks! just by you saying that you still kept your service...that gives me some hope!

Im definetly not renewing my contract till I test it out down there for a few mo....

Is there cable internet in town (harrogate)? Or do people have dsl? How much is it? And what company is it?

I'd really like to have my internet set up before I get there because I'm kind of addicted and it's not like there is much else to do in town lol.

And I know this will vary drastically but how much do people usually end up paying for electricity for a place that two people live in? on average?

Sync....so from my unofficial list.....things you can't do without and hold near and dear to your heart:

1) Lenovo - to be the name of your first child (its a unisex name I have found)
2) Sprint - perhaps the middle name???

I honestly think that if the words Syncope, Lenovo, Sprint, and sucks ever appear in the same post written by you.....the whole SDN server will crash and the internet as we know it will cease to exist.

😛 :meanie: 😛

I use AT&T DSL and am just peachy with it, don't remember the price. But I don't use the internet a ton at home since I am usually at school, but when my wife uses it for work, its just fine. As for electricity, water, gas, I don't know for sure b/c we just add a flat fee for those onto our rent.

I must say.....I am a loyal person 😀

only if lenovo would pay me!! 😡

On the Windows Mobile phones you just plug them in and say you want to share the internet connection and go with it. I also found a program that lets your WM phone work as a wireless router. I'm not sure about the iPhone though.

my buddy can unlock the iphone so you can use it with sprint....too bad we are at UD in delaware. haha, doesn't take long at all.

really? oh well...what got the least crappiest service? also, do we have to pay for the landline phone in our rooms in the LMU inn?

I am on the waitlist, and, because I'll have to take out loans for everything, if I get in I am going to need to get a car that has a warranty on it so I don't have to estimate how much money I'll be spending each year in car repairs. Anyone know if it is possible to get student loans to cover a vehicle? Or a way to consolidate a reg. loan with my student loans?

Good news for DCOM students - my husband is cheap labor for car repairs/maintenance - we just bought a house 1.3 miles from school so it's not far. We will be moving in July, just let us know what you need! We do all the work on our 4 cars as it is.

Good luck to all those waiting...

If you don't stop writing posts like this I'm gonna have to carry nascardoc outta here!
:laugh::laugh::laugh:

See all you 2012'ers soon:hardy::hardy::hardy:
Good luck to all you waiting:luck::luck::luck:

its all about Japanese cars 🙂 b/c they are better in every aspect.

2004 mustang cobra = awesome
yeahhhhhh baby! mustang all the way. i can't afford one yet so i have a fusion, but i'm on my way haha

and just in case anyone was wondering, AACOMAS opened their primary application May 1st of this year, not June 1st. So make sure to apply early if you're applying again!! And good luck!!

except for the aforementioned leaking heads….

that is what the ford dealership said but i dont believe most of what they say. it drives great but i went in to have an engine coil changed and they told me the heads were beginning to leak. i think it was the typical dealship ploy to make more money.

So the hubby emailed a "letter of intent" to Dr. Carney.

Dr. Carney emailed back - "Thank You".

So what do you think that means? Can we take that to mean he is one of the top candidates to be picked off the alternate list???:laugh:

it's funny because we find ourselves wanting any kind of information we can get even if it doesn't mean anything!!

I hope it means that his chances are greatly increased! :luck:

Good Luck to your hubby! :luck: Did you address the letter to Dr. Carney, because he's not actually a Dr., but I'm sure he was flattered anyway. 😉 I'm sure he'll send the letter to the admissions committee. :luck::luck:

Whoops! That's my bad - I meant to tell him to check before he sent it . . .

Are you losing compression, leaking water, leaking oil, or simply taking the word of the dealership?

At any rate, he can take a look and do a compression test to see what's going on.

How is the construction going on campus? I remember they were getting land prepped for construction. I just read on wikipedia that there will be indoor tennis courts and etc? thats pretty legit.

strictly the dealerships word. thats why i didnt have them fix it. they wanted $650 and there are no signs that anything is wrong.

Funny thing about Ford's...Mine has never "not started" in the morning, and it's nearly 7 years old.

Wonder of ND can say the same for his fancy new Chevrolet?

Oh, and today's lesson for the day is..."Go To Class".:laugh::laugh:

Stupid honda.... 🙁

Also, that was FREAKING AMAZING!

At a glance, I'd get the BRS Biochem book on its own (it's a condensed version of Marks), and then get the Cell Bio and Histo from BRS instead of getting the BRS recommended.

Mark's is a good book, but the BRS covers it pretty well.

Definitely need the biostats book.

Others are debateable, but that list has changed quite a bit from ours.

I'm a little shocked to see that Langman's Embryology made a repeat appearance...take that and the fact that I own the BRS embryology book for what it's worth.

This is all just my 2 pennies.

I'm sure others will give theirs.

uh oh......I guess I have an excuse for that iphone now...but I can't stand ATT!!!

Based on what? You seem to have some VERY strong opinions about things with seemingly little to no experience with them (you mentioned you've been with Sprint for years).

I'd be interested to know what your reasons are for not liking a company or product so I know what to look for in the future and hopefully avoid the same problems you've experienced.

I agree.....the BRS books are really good. I know I've said this before, but I will again, the review biochem book I recommend the most is Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry . It is AWESOME. It also covers some cell bio, genetics, etc. I can't recommend this book more highly....it is that good. I used it in conjunction with the BRS biochem book, which is good, but I preferred the other.

I would definitely get the anatomy book......Bates.....at least one of the OPP books b/c you won't remember everything and its nice to have a reference when treating family, etc.......biostats

As for the other texts...like MJB said, those are more for an individual basis....altho the biochem text is good. Not sure on the dissector since we did not have one.

I 2nd the embryo book.....I didn't like it much either.

Shameless plug...

If any of you moving here (Or anyone else) think you might get DirecTv, please let me know. I've got a referral form that will get you some sweet add ons, rebates, etc...and I get a small rebate for referring you. 😀

So, what is the best way to pay for books? I imagine we are not going to get our loan money for awhile.

Also, those of you with families, did any of you guys go for uncertified loans?

So, what is the best way to pay for books? I imagine we are not going to get our loan money for awhile.

All you can really do is find a way to pay for them now, or wait until orientation and they'll let you, for one weekend, put the books on your student account and it will be taken out of your fin aid when the check comes. Of course the down side with that is you won't be able to get them cheaper than you would online as most of the books are new (pretty much all of them really) and the price is jacked up.

Yep and by using 3G this summer! I can't wait! 😀
There is an unfortunate side-effect of attending a rural school in a beautiful area...no 3G. You'll be lucky if you get Edge (I would guess) but I'm sure you'll have GPRS available (yuck)...check out ATT's 3G coverage map and you'll see that as soon as you get outside of Knoxville, that sweet speedy coverage is gone.
