LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good news for DCOM students - my husband is cheap labor for car repairs/maintenance - we just bought a house 1.3 miles from school so it's not far. We will be moving in July, just let us know what you need! We do all the work on our 4 cars as it is.

Good luck to all those waiting...
Hey alright! Maybe I can wait that long to get my bearings replaced on my driver side axle...though by the sound of the screech, I cannot 🙂

There is an unfortunate side-effect of attending a rural school in a beautiful area...no 3G. You'll be lucky if you get Edge (I would guess) but I'm sure you'll have GPRS available (yuck)...check out ATT's 3G coverage map and you'll see that as soon as you get outside of Knoxville, that sweet speedy coverage is gone.

Had I wished, I could have posted this using EDGE from the ole Blackberry. Sitting in the lecture hall...so it's pretty good.

Just FYI.

Well that's good to know...at least we're not fully trapped in the dark ages 😉

Based on what? You seem to have some VERY strong opinions about things with seemingly little to no experience with them (you mentioned you've been with Sprint for years).

I'd be interested to know what your reasons are for not liking a company or product so I know what to look for in the future and hopefully avoid the same problems you've experienced.

first let me address your quote "You seem to have some VERY strong opinions about things with seemingly little to no experience with them"

you are right...i have strong opinions...I am sure of what I want in life...and my parents raised me to stand for what I believe in

but you are wrong when you think I make opinions based on little experience with the product/service or whatever else I am making an opinion on

but an opinion is an opinion...not fact

my father and mother have been with att forever....started with cellular one back in 1990 with the old zack morris "brick phone".....then on to cinugulair..on to att...so yess....we have been there through the entire history of what is currently known as att....

to this day, we have horrible horrible service. We are located 3-4 miles away from ATT corporate and still have horrible signal...not to mention numerious numerous dropped calls....the worst? their cs

why does my dad stay with att? because his company pays for it...so he has no other choice

another thing that pissed me off about att was their false campaing of 'least dropped calls" and "most bars"....it's all BS

is that experience enough for you? 😉

and im not even going to talk about ATT's inferior data service...that's another story! sprint has unrestricted data use...meaning you can go to any website from your phone...with others..you are limited to where you can go on the web

Perfect, now I understand your complaint.

Their data seems to be working fine. I'd prefer it be faster, but that's a Blackberry issue more than anything from what I can tell.

Anyway, it doesn't affect my life, if I don't like something, I switch. 🙂

I was referring more to your "experience" with Gateway's tablets, but that's another story. 🙂

I'm sure life will go on even if you don't have the greatest cell signal in the Gap. Most seem to survive it. 😉

lol..and im sure we will have bigger and better things to worry about in the future (school, classes, exams, etc)...but right now, I feel as if I am in purgatory

and let's pretend you never mentioned gateway....im not getting into the notebook debate again 😉

Hoss, you just ruined my hopes and dreams. 🙁 My life is over now. Dang it!

did anyone use a "POD" or something of that sorts to move their stuff to harrogate? i went to the POD website and other competitors....no one delivers to harrogate. i figure i'll just load up my whip that rocks 22 inch spinners

so how do we get checked into the student apartments? i will be moving my stuff in on the 15th of july and was just curious if anybody knows the appropriate procedure.
also, do we have to pay the balance when we move in or does it come off our student account?

I used Budget Truck.. There is a drop off in Corbin.

Our lovely thread has been so dead the last few days... I had to scroll down about half the way to even find it. But yay it is friday! I get to fill out the loan application for Chase today.

We actually ended up BUYING an enclosed trailer for less than it would have been to rent one from UHaul for the weekend. We've taken 1 truckload and it's already paid for itself

I just finished that this morning. Do you get a message saying that they will lend you $25000 total (subsidized and unsubsidized)? I asked Pat Peace about it and she doesn't know why that would come up since she knows you can take out more than that. Anyway, she's fixing it for me - don't know what I'd do without her 😛

Shameless plug...

If any of you moving here (Or anyone else) think you might get DirecTv, please let me know. I've got a referral form that will get you some sweet add ons, rebates, etc...and I get a small rebate for referring you. 😀

Who doesn't love making 50 bucks the easy way?

Oh I haven't done it yet. Maybe it will be fixed before I get around to it. I'm at work right now so I wasn't planning on doing it until later tonight.

what message? 😕

In fact, i was surprised that total federal loans have increased by ~$4000. I thought we could get 30k and 8.5k, now its 34k and 8.5k and then 12k from grad plus loans

I think she was talking about something being wrong with the Chase loan application.

did chase ask anyone how much money you wanted to take out for federal stafford loans. when i filled out my grad plus loan with sally mae they asked me how much i wanted to take out but chase didnt.

Does anyone know how often/when the next time the admissions committee will meet to pull people off the alternate list? My lease is ending soon and I'm getting very impatient!

So I was gonna use chase but changed my mind since they now have the origination fee. I went with us bank. So it doesn't ask you how much money when you do the application? Why do I have to worry about everything? lol

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

what message? 😕
On my Chase application, I was confused by the two tables that were saying that "Grad Students" could take out a total of $20500 and $18500... or something like that. Anway, Pat is checking it out because she knows that's not right.

did chase ask anyone how much money you wanted to take out for federal stafford loans.
No, Chase didn't ask me that - I think that's why we mailed the forms in. Hopefully DCOM indicates that when they finish submitting on our behalf.

So I was gonna use chase but changed my mind since they now have the origination fee. I went with us bank.
The only reason my origination fee was locked in at 0% was because I started the online counseling last week. They wouldn't let me eSign until yesterday, but they went with the fee at the time I started. You are good with US Bank though - no worries.

I'm leaving for Hawaii in an hour - by the time I return next week, I'm sure I'll be shaking from SDN withdrawl. Have a good week everyone and good luck with loans!

Aanyone have any info on houses for rent near Harrogate (prices, availability)?

thanks!

I ask Pat and she said Chase is changing their on June 1st. You should email her to confirm, but that is what she told me.

Changing their what? So all GradPlus loans companies charge origination fees? That's what my husband said but I didn't think so.

This year, most I've seen are passing the loan origination fees on to the students. From what I understand, in the past these companies were paying the fees for the borrower, but that is not the case this year.

Supposedly, Chase was going to a 1% origination fee on June 1st, but they appear to have already made that adjustment. All I know is that Chase's application wasn't even available until May 9th, but since I completed the online counseling before the increase, I was somehow locked in at 0%. You should call Pat Peace if you have questions about it, because she's working directly with a Chase rep.

So, my mom and I drove up to Harrogate today. I was happy to see that my apartment building is finally getting underway. The last time I was up there, I could only drive by the plot of land it would sit on. It's pretty nerve racking sense my lease in Knoxville ends June 30th! Atleast the first floor is up!

So I'm taking out the full loan amount that LMU gave us. What banks did u guys use? Wtf is an origination fee? what is the best combo of lenders u guys used? ie the stafford and grad plus loan combos. We don't have to pay for the loans until after med school, right? I know....so many questions.

i used sallie mae for grad plus and chase for stafford. origination fee is a fee they tack onto the principle of the loan. we dont have to pay any federal loans until after med school and you can defer through residency if you want. private loans must be payed back after you graduate.

at that link you'll find links to the different programs and then the lender options.

shoot..im confused

all I did was sign the letter and sent it back...was there more we're supposed to do? I know we're suppose to do the entrance counseling and all that...but where are you guys picking specific banks? and how much is this stupid origination fee going to cost me?

I should have been smart like missdochopeful and filled it out earlier so I didn't get stuck with an origination fee

however, the chase online thing is not working so you can't do it right now...it's been down since the weekend...I just booted that and went with US Bank

Bearings should be no problem, hope you can hold out that long... what year/make/model ?

Hey guys- I was wondering if anyone knew/remembered how much the diagnostic kit at the book store was/is? Thanks!

Bearings should be no problem,

Oh yeah, no problem for her.

Ooohh, around $800 or $900? I can't really remember but if you already have something that's included in the kit you can have them take it out and that lowers the price of the kit.

Do you know the brand and model?

For our class the kit was all Welch-Allen. My recommendation is to get at least part of the kit, the opthalmoscope is very cool. I'm not crazy about the bp kit and the stethoscope but that's my opinion. If you have stuff/brands you like (reflex hammer, tuning fork, stethoscope, sphygmomanometer) get it and bring it with you and just get a partial kit. Also I didn't know this coming here but you will need nitrile gloves for anatomy lab. They are kind of hard to find here in Harrogate so get a box of 100 and bring it with you.

That $800 someone mentioned earlier includes the pan optic set, stethoscope, and BP cuffs right? Does anyone recall the prices of the individual items?

from what I know...anatomy labs allow latex and non-latex (nitrile gloves)

contact dermatitis could be an issue with latex gloves, but most people hate the "plastiky" non-latex gloves because condensation from your palms accumulates very quickly versus the latex gloves

not to rain on anyone's parade, but this might not be the case by the time we're in residency.

1% off my interest (which would amount to ~$36,000 (assuming 200,000 principal over 25 years)>>>>>>>1% refund after 12 months of continuous on-time payments (which would amount to $400)

What's the difference between regular latex exam gloves and nitrile gloves?

thanks!

Nitrile gloves are latex free. I work in a research lab and wear gloves every day, all day long. I prefer the nitrile gloves because they are non-powdered and don't have that funky latex smell.

They are also the only option for people with a latex allergy.

Pretty much agree with everything my blackjack buddy here has stated. 😉

If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone out and found my own steth, and maybe my own BP cuff, etc...

The Opthalmoscope kit is awesome...but I could do without the short Steth. BP has been ok, but we've hardly used it..probably could have got away with just using my wife's from Nursing school.

I think the Optho kit was around 650 or so...total package was about 900 and change.

Nitrile gloves? You can get them pretty cheap at Sam's. That's where I got mine and picked up a few boxes for classmates.

Tuning forks and Hammers will likely be sold as part of fundraisers.

That's all I can think of right now...I've got visions of the OPP practical dancing in my head.

Also, bags will likely be sold as fundraisers for clubs. Just FYI.

Hey, how did you get at that number? Damn. I was just about to do US bank.

lol 🙂

I would stick with the nitrile gloves unless you have a specific reason not to, they seem to be tougher and thicker and hold up well. Plus if you get the blue ones you can look like a smurf!

Also there is a local shop that should be selling scrubs (for anatomy lab) with LMU DCOM (and your name if you want) embroidered on the chest. They were about $40 for us. There is also a place in the mall in Middlesboro that sells tons of scrubs. They are cheaper (in the $20's) but no embroidery. I have two pairs so I don't have to wear a dirty pair over and over through out the week. You will be in the anatomy lab twice a week but most of our class went back in other times to study as well.
