LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm sitting in my back yard, the grass freshly mowed. The grill is slowly cooking some stuff, its a beautiful day. Gentle, slow breeze, about 75 I
suppose. Looking over the pastures and hills, the horses are drinking water
from a pond. I have been here now for a few months, I love the area. Almost like Alaska in someways. I live right near a dirt race track, and wow, they really crank it up on the weekends.

I've been working for SGS minerals, I do about 130 bomb calorimetry tests each night from 6pm until 7am. Great friends at work as well. I shop in KY, buy gas in KY and sleep in TN. I drive past the campus each morning. We all know as the days get longer, the sun arises earlier. Well now, as I leave work and exit the tunnel, its a little lighter outside and I drive by the school again. Its incredible.

I am going to be a surgeon in a rural environment and it is the best moment in my life. My lady and children are coming from Hawaii. Though I miss Hawaii, I am glad to be back home in Appalachia. I too am an older student, and you better believe I'm set on saving lives. Though I've crabbed in Alaska, surfed 20+ foot waves, the Lord has given me so much....but it is this day, that I have prepared for....DCOM. The faculty and system are incredible. I hope everyone is ready, real ready. Aloha!

Class of 2012

This reminds me of why i like it here.. sometimes you need reminding in the middle of test time. 🙂

I can always tell (other than by my own frantic studying) that exam time draws near because of the increase in posts by my fellow classmates on this thread not naming any names (ahem ND)!!!
😀😀😀

I think the general consensus is, if I wanted to learn all of these generic/brand names/AE/uses/contraindications/durations/doses I would have gone to pharmacy school...

We learn what happens to people like you for our last test... Behavioral Psych!!!!

FYI - got the alternate list letter Friday. Kinda bummed, but we have said all along, as the Lord opens the doors we'll go through them and of course if the door is closed - then obviously we can't 🙂. The hubby got a new higher paying job on Friday too so it's not all bad! Just the waiting and wondering thing is bothersome!

Would love to know how many people are on the alternate list . . .

Same with me... I asked a couple questions when I put myself on the list and my response was "thank you". Anyone have any info about how LMU-DCOM's alternate list other than the email that was posted earlier?

DanaRenee... sorry to hear that you didn't get a solid response. It would be nice to be able to plan where to live etc. I wonder if anyone from our interview group was accepted?

This is the email i got.. Anyone know the chances of them uping the class to 160? Also 115 applicants, Im freaking out... ahhhhhhh

Dear Applicant,

Greetings! This is Paul Carney with LMU-DCOM. The Class of 2012 (fall 2008) is now filled. For our class of 150 seats we received over 2,000 applications for admission. Between October 9, 2007 and April 25, 2008 we interviewed 496 applicants (24% of the AACOMAS applicant pool or roughly one out of every four that applied for admission) and held our last admissions committee meeting on Thursday, May 1, 2008. Although the class has been filled, space in the class may become available if anyone already in the class withdraws between now and when classes commence on August 1, 2008. As of right now there are 115 confirmed applicants on the alternate list.

The alternate list is not ranked numerically, but is stratified into a few categories: local applicants from the southern Appalachian region are given first priority; applicants with significant experience in the medical field are given priority; applicants with family connections or other connections to the southern Appalachian region are given priority; applicants who are a good ‘fit’ with the mission of LMU-DCOM are given priority. That is, their life experiences and future plans coincide with the mission of service to the southern Appalachian region.

If you no longer wish to remain on the alternate list, please let me know so that I may remove your name from this list.

So what exactly did you email them to begin with? Did you just email your intention to stay on the alternate list?

I emailed them a while ago to find out where i was on the alternate list and they wouldn't tell me. I just recieved that email earlier today. But I did email him when i got the letter saying I was on the alternate list that I wanted to stay on the list.

I just received the same email. I feel like living in IL could be a disadvantage 🙁

For those still on the waitlist, don't get down. I was waitlisted last year for the 2011 class and was pulled off last July for the 2012 class. So I've pretty much been waiting around for about 10 months to start. I would just make sure to answer every phone call and reply to every email promptly. Baking cookies might work too, or at least that would work on me.

What about the other school that you are on the alternate list for? Have they given you any information about how they structure the alternate list? Just curious. . .

So did you write a formal letter type email? did you make any mention if you think you meet any of the "priorities" that they listed?

Kenzy,

thanks for the encouragement! I am confused though when you say you were pulled off for the 2012 class. we don't have to reapply for the 2013 class? they would just call us and say you're in for the 2013 but not for the 2012?

How does that work?

hey..you're in the same boat as me!!

I originally applied for the class of 2011, was wait listed...and put in top 3 up until first day of orientation.....everyone showed up for the first day..but they offered to extend me an acceptance for the class of 2012...so i've been waiting around since 08/07 as well!!

I also suggest keeping your phone on you at all times and checking your email at least once a day...I almost felt that if I even missed 1 phone call, my spot would go to the next person who does pick up the phone

he said he applied for the class of 2011 and was wait listed for that class....but then they offered him an gauranteed admission for the class of 2012 so you don't have to fill out the AACOMAS again and have to go through the process...but this is only because there were a top 3 on the wait list at that point...and we were soo close to getting in.....so they offered an admission anyways

this is not the same as all others on the wait list...you have to make it to the "top 3" to be offered that...and it still has to be approved by the Dean

So how did you know you were in the top 3? and when did they offer you the acceptance for 2012?

I just called DCOM and asked about emailing the intention to stay on the list and she said she could just tell Dr. Carney. then I asked if it would be okay to email him and reiterate why the hubby should be at the top of the list which she said that would be fine - but I'm wondering if they don't already have that list made up at this point - does anyone know?

I knew I was in the top 3 because Mr. carney called me in mid july to inform me. He also told me to be ready to move at a moments notice..even after the first day of orientation....obviously, I was ready to move..but no spots opened up

as compensation for the stress/anxiety that comes along with being on the "top 3" of a wait list and because i was willing to move at a moments notice, they decided to offer me an acceptance for the following years class (class of 2012)

You will get 2-3 more emails over the course of the summer to keep asking if you are interested on being on the list...i replied yes every time. I did not send in Letter of Intent, nor did I submit anything extra on top of what i submitted to get the interview...hope this helps

I made sure everytime that I got an email I let them know how badly I wanted to go to school there. I let them know that even though it's a 12 hour drive from Iowa to LMU, I could be down there ready to go in 12.5

Syncope, what have you been doing with all the free time since the acceptance?

Thanks you guys for sharing - this is great information and very encouraging for those of us on the waitlist.

I think someone else said it - but this has been a great place to come for information, encouragement, etc.

Same here...I also mentioned that I had the full support of my family, who would assist me in moving there ASAP

work and lots of vacation!! i went on 6 skiing trips this winter to Colorado, Tahoe, and BC!! about to hit up puerto rico and the domincan republic in june

no problem! i completely sympathize with your plight, as I have been in your shoes...but once you're in...it is the greatest feeling in the world!

Happy to help, I remember how much I was freaking out when I was waitlisted. Just keep positive and have a 1-2 year backup plan

so kenzy....where were you this whole time? lol..i see that you just joined SDN! I'm so glad that I found this site to pass my time in the meantime and meet future classmates!

I've had other names:

AdamDO

I think I'm going to stick with this one for now. I don't really have a chance to post too much though. I have been moving around a lot since last July. I started a Biomedical Sciences Masters program in Chicago and did that for a semester to refresh on courses. Then I moved to Tn for a while, St. Louis, and now i'm back in the corn in Iowa for the next 2 months. I think I'll be going back down to Harrogate soon to start looking at buying a house. Still up in the air though.

I was for my first two years, I ended up graduating from St. Ambrose in Davenport which is an hour east of Iowa City

To answer your question DanaRenee...
The other school I'm waitlisted at is LECOM-B. They rank their top 30 I believe and everyone else is in a pool with other alternate-listers. I've asked about my rank and received no real information so I'm assuming that I do not hold a ranked place on the list. Lets just hope all goes well with DCOM and we end up as workout buddies or something! 😀

hardley any schools have a ranked list now....

what they basically do in the early stages is that they review all the wait listers again...kind of like a 2nd screening by the adcom.....they choose 5-10 people and offer them acceptances and work down the line...choosing those from the appalachia region first

That makes sense.

Let the waiting begin!!

you know, if they give higher priority to Appalachian residents, they why do they interview applicants from other parts of the country, like me?

because they don't want 100% of their class from that region...only a majority or whatever

it's almost the same way that public unviersities look for instate residents, but still offer out of state residents chances at being admitted

Does anyone know how the printing situation works at DCOM? are we allowed free printing? or is it like 10 cents a page, etc....

Basically, i want to know if i should bring a printer down there

thanks

I don't know, but if you keep reminding me of these bits of fees for me to tack on to my budget, I will have to end up taking the whole $55,000! So stop it! 😀

Its free as of now... Since the majority of us use our laptops for everything, we don't really use that much paper... Not sure if that's going to change when you guys get here. I would bring a printer anyway just for convenience.

wow..awesome post! We are going to have an incredible class!

NascarDoc, can you tell me more abuot sprint service around campus and especially at the student apartmenets please? someone said you were the expert on this...thanks!

I did have Sprint for awhile down and they were OK, but I was also living in LaFollette at the time. I had to have the phone in roaming the whole time b/c it jumped all around tower-wise. Signal would be good, then drop off, then come back....thats why I just kept it in roaming to stop that from happening. While sprint said that cell to cell was free, they didn't tell us that if one phone was in roaming, that cell to cell minutes cost us. We ended up with a bill for almost $700.....I about crapped my pants. So, we dropped them like a bad habit and went with AT&T. It is definitely the best service in the area, at least in my experience and many others. Sprint really rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't like being lied to.

That whole wedding business last weekend REALLY got in the way of my SDN posting.... 😛

Ok, Sprint, or more specifically, Nextel - my husband received a dirt cheap plan through his work which he's had for several years now, but upon visiting the Harrogate area, found he could not get service (nor could my dad, mom, or I who also have "Nextel"). So we switched to AT&T a few of months ago (which of course doesn't get service at my house in Michigan), but it does get good reception in most places surrounding the school.

After completing his contract with Sprint and getting AT&T, he received a $250 bill from Sprint saying that at some point in the last decade, he had signed up for a contract extention promotion and is now being billed for early termination of contract. Might I add he happened to sign onto his online Sprint account just to verify several months later that there were no pending charges, as they didn't mail him anything or try to call to inform him of the issue, when he came upon the charges. After arguing with Sprint on the phone for an hour that we are moving to an area that does not get coverage, they finally agreed to send an agent to the area to check out the claim. Friday we received a full credit for the charge.... so all I can say is not even Sprint is saying Sprint gets good coverage in Harrogate... just my two cents.

That sounds more like the Sprint I'm familiar with. The billing after the fact part.

I got the same thing. We still get bills from Sprint saying we owe them money. I called and my wife has called, still they keep coming. I'm sure if I get another one after the wife gets here tomorrow 🙂D), she'll make another phone call.....I just hope I am home to see it :meanie:

Haha that explains my attitude about weddings completely! I was so glad to get it over with.

But anyways how was the wedding? and when is your honeymoon?

sprint CS is horrible..the only reason why i stick with them is because of my dirt cheap plan and fortunately, i've never had any billing errors..even with the conversion to the new billing system

uh oh......I guess I have an excuse for that iphone now...but I can't stand ATT!!!

I am also in a contract and if you use more than 50% of your minute in roaming they can terminate you...and you dont have to pay and ETF...so I may just go that route
