For all the first years....did you buy all the books off the required text list, and do you actually use them? I know as an undergrad half the books they said were required, were not even necessary....Your thoughts on what you purchased and what you actually use?? Thanks.
We get so much info from our power points that I never use the books unless I need clarification. Our test questions don't come from any of the books besides the review book that served as our anatomy text. Totally agree about the Netters, it was all that I used in lab. I have used both OPP texts a lot, but I love OPP anyways and am always looking up some technique or another. I didn't use the Cell Science book at all. I didn't use Embryology either, but I had had the class before... I might need it for systems though, who knows. Other books I haven't used: the medical genetics book, the biochemistry book, the histology book, and Bates.. although you should definitely get the Bates.. its one of those that you can use as a reference your entire career.
The thing is, all the books I haven't really used are because I had already taken classes that went into quite a bit of detail on the subject. I guess its probably safe to say that if you feel like you have a decent background in one of the subjects, you probably don't need the book for an extra reference for the first semester... However, since we haven't really gotten into systems yet for this semester, my opinion on some of the books i haven't used could change.
..sooo for a bare bones list of first semester books(assuming they don't change texts like MJB said)...
Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 9th Edition
Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics, 6th Edition
USMLE Road Map: Gross Anatomy, J. White, 2nd Ed
An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment, 3rd Edition (my fav of the two)
Netters.. given to you free by joining SOMA during orientation
.. then add anything else to this list that you think you need on a subject by subject basis.
Some of the others can probably tell you more about whether or not they used/how good are the other subject books.
