LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been up there many times in the last couple of months and my Verizon has worked just fine. Even in Webb's. I haven't tried it in Middlesboro.

Unfortunately it doesn't work in Middlesboro but because you're not planning on living there it shouldn't really be a problem.

The videos were rockin. Give some credit where it's due.

Actually he said that because I ripped on ND and then ND's wife picked my side... :meanie: MJB's got nothing but love for ND. 👍

Finally got my avatar to work.

Funny story: Yesterday I was trying to get the heat to work, and so I left the cover off. I guess my cat got in there and was crawling around in the duct work. He chewed his way out and I found him in the cellar. He's such a rascal that's why we named him General Nibbles. He bites a lot.

If you wanna be a doc...you might want to re-evaluate this. Just sayin'....this is a "people business" in many ways.

Re-evaluate if I want to be a doc. Now you're testing my patience. Is that some kind of joke? I really don't think you know me well enough to make that statement. In fact, the reason I hate interviews is because I don't want to be judged by someone after 30 minutes of chatting.

Edit: Please excuse the blatent comment. My apologies. I'm a bit hot now but am cooling down slowly.

A while back, someone asked about how much of the class is full. I talked to Mr. Carney ~ 3.5 weeks ago and he stated that 59 seats had been confirmed/sealed the deal. I would imagine its about 70ish now. I'm still patiently (stressfully!!!) waiting on the waitlist...... Hope this helps all you stats lovers.....Does anyone know if there are any plans to repeat what was done last year in reference to offering a guaranteed spot for next year for those at the top of the waitlist?

Yeah, jen48 is my beautiful wife. Its true that MJB has nothin' but love for me, Marthea too (but she'll never admit it :meanie:)

As for the guaranteed spot(s) from the waitlist, I have absolutely no idea (kinda like me with Immunology *shivers*). That is definitely something you will have to call Mr. Carney about b/c I don't know how all that works and thus, won't speculate on that one.

As for the number of seats remaining, the Class of 2012 is roughly 2/3 full. Thats the best I can do for you guys.

T minus 1 week until the Daytona 500.....NASCAR is back...WOO HOO!!! Go Jeff Gordon......boo Jimmie Johnson (that is a dig at my wife :meanie: hence the 48 in her username)

You'd have to kill me first... :meanie:😉

I also would just like to say once again, I am one hot simpson!😍

From what I know, you only get guaranteed an admission if you are in the top 3 or so on the wait list and you are waiting all the way up until orientation and it doesn't work out for you.

I am glad DCOM empathizes with their students. Mr. Carney told me I got the acceptance "due to the anxiety of having to wait up until the last minute, and your willing to move down here in the last minute"...i hope that makes sense?

I just don't know if I will be able to secure such a large private loan for that school. Whereas I liked this school as much and I would be able to get a federal loan without waiting 6 months after the school has started.

Well its looking more and more likely that I might go here instead of PNWU. I just don't know if I will be able to secure such a large private loan for that school. Whereas I liked this school as much and I would be able to get a federal loan without waiting 6 months after the school has started.

you can only come if you bring your dogs and I am your official dog sitter, otherwise deal off

I'm so excited to come to DCOM, that I literally spent wayy too much money on a REI sale yesterday...but I don't care..everything was 50% off already marked down prices...got myself a nice new tent, sleeping bag, water filter, etc.....

of course this is all in anticipation for the many weekend hike trips ill take while i'm down there!

are there bears down in TN? 😱

There are bears in the Gatlinburg area but I don't know about the area around DCOM. Just don't leave food at the entrance to your tent and you should be good. :meanie:

My greatest concern with the area is that there are rattlesnakes and copperheads.

And rattle snakes too! We did get an email earlier in the year about a Park Ranger giving an informative lecture on how to deal with bears if you come across then when hiking. So they're there, but I've never seen them. Nor has anyone I've talked to.

to all those that interviewed with me (1/25), did you get that email from Carney about sending in the matriculation deposit yet? My letter said they'd send more info on that as the deadline approaches, and I def. don't want to miss the deadline! I got my letter on the 5th or 6th, but Dr. Stowers called me on 2/1. The letter says 14 days from receipt of the letter though.

thanks!

For all the first years....did you buy all the books off the required text list, and do you actually use them? I know as an undergrad half the books they said were required, were not even necessary....Your thoughts on what you purchased and what you actually use?? Thanks.

I'm just guessing here, but I think some of your required textbooks will be different from ours, partially based on our opinions of them, and partially due to faculty finding other alternatives. Once the list comes out for you all, I'm sure you will be able to get plenty of input.

That being said, don't buy a Netter's...you will get a copy if you join SOMA...and it's WELL worth it.

I use a lot of BRS books. It was particularly helpful for BioChem and Embryology.

Yes, there apparently are Bears.

Wanna buy a Yamaha WaveRunner too? Mine has looked beautiful sitting in the back yard since we moved here.

yikes..do you know what kind of bears?

Thanks...lol..no need for a waverunner

yikes...if that's the case, I don't think any food should be kept near your tent

My greatest concern with the area is that there are rattlesnakes and copperheads.

oh great..another concern...what are the odds you would run into one?

Thanks for the info guys..i'm sure it'll be no problem, but ill make sure i bring a walking stick for the snakes..and if i could get my hands on some anti-venom..😀

Well I didn't have to worry about that as I already sent in my deposit because I wanted to be sure I didn't miss any deadlines.. but if you want a definite date of when it is due for you, I suggest just calling them and asking..

I interviewed 3 days before that and it took over a week for my letter to arrive. Although you are supposed to have 2 weeks from the time you receive the letter, it is actually 2 weeks from the time you get the call, according to the reminder email I received. My deadline is the 15th... I'm assuming yours is 3 days later. Mr. Carney said, to be sure it gets there on time, you can just mail a check made out to "LMU-DCOM" for $2000 and mail it to:

LMU-DCOM
6965 Cumberland Gap Parkway
Harrogate, TN 37752

There isn't anything else that needs to be returned to them besides the check at this point, so you don't physically need the letter to send a check. Hope this helps!

We get so much info from our power points that I never use the books unless I need clarification. Our test questions don't come from any of the books besides the review book that served as our anatomy text. Totally agree about the Netters, it was all that I used in lab. I have used both OPP texts a lot, but I love OPP anyways and am always looking up some technique or another. I didn't use the Cell Science book at all. I didn't use Embryology either, but I had had the class before... I might need it for systems though, who knows. Other books I haven't used: the medical genetics book, the biochemistry book, the histology book, and Bates.. although you should definitely get the Bates.. its one of those that you can use as a reference your entire career.

The thing is, all the books I haven't really used are because I had already taken classes that went into quite a bit of detail on the subject. I guess its probably safe to say that if you feel like you have a decent background in one of the subjects, you probably don't need the book for an extra reference for the first semester... However, since we haven't really gotten into systems yet for this semester, my opinion on some of the books i haven't used could change.

..sooo for a bare bones list of first semester books(assuming they don't change texts like MJB said)...

Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 9th Edition
Study Guide to Epidemiology and Biostatistics, 6th Edition
USMLE Road Map: Gross Anatomy, J. White, 2nd Ed
An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment, 3rd Edition (my fav of the two)
Netters.. given to you free by joining SOMA during orientation
.. then add anything else to this list that you think you need on a subject by subject basis.

Some of the others can probably tell you more about whether or not they used/how good are the other subject books.

In addition to what piratesse said, I did use the biochem book because I'd never had it before and while it did go in to more detail than necessary it did help me a lot. Plus Dr. Kiick did take some questions directly out of it. I also used the first couple chapters of the immuno book because I had no idea what was going on with that class as well. But it'd be better to just borrow that one from someone else to read because you really won't have that much time to read anymore. But yea, I'm buying books on a need basis. So when we start the next bunch of lectures I'll wait a couple days to see if I think I need the books or not. It seems to be the best way to do it so you don't waste your money.

I apparently used the books more than others...but I'd have to agree on the Cell Bio book. I'm keeping it though because I need to take a look at it when I have more time if I want to brush up on some stuff.

I don't think USMLE will be used again, but I might be wrong.

I had not had any of the classes that we covered...or if I had, it wasn't covered much in my undergrad classes.

Oh, how I wish I had been able to take Cell Bio, in depth Genetics, BioChem, and Immunology.

The Immunology textbook was/is very, very good, as is Foundations and Bates.

Cell Bio and Medical Embryology were far too wordy for my taste. Mark's Biochem is good...but didn't have time to read it.

I'm a book person...I wish I had more time to read them.

i agree with what the others have said regarding books....it is defintely and individual thing. I used review books more than the actual textbooks just b/c they are shorter to read. The Immuno text is amazing. Netters is a must-have. Bates and the OPP books are really good too. I didn't like the embryo book at all...no cohesiveness at all...it prettu much sucked it my eyes, although some stuff was ok. A review book will serve you much better in embryo. Biochem...defintiely get the text, but I would highly, highly recommend Lippincotts Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry. The book is fanstasitc, as is the Pharm and Immuno book in that series. The BRS series of review books are money as well, as is First Aid for the USMLE. I didn't use the Cell Bio book or the Genetics book. The histo book has a lot of good info in it, I don't think many people have looked at it tho, but it is really good. Rohen's anatomy atlas is very good as well and I would recommend having that and Netters....but if you had to have one...then I would go with Netters. For those who fear anatomy, I would recommend Essential Clinical Anatomy by Keith Moore (this book is also known as baby moore, big moore is really good, excellent really, but very long).

As for this semester (except Immuno - BUY THAT BOOK)....we'll see. From what I can tell, the review book for the path text is golden.

I would just like you all to know that I'm starting Death Race 2000 as my current study movie of choice and you should all be jealous. Very, very jealous.

okay, so when bob gave us the tour of cumberland gap I saw a massive symbol that looked like a friggen swastika on the side of some building. albeit it had cute pastel colors, but wtf.

go back a few pages in the thread. there is a lot of info about it. it is not what you think.

Old news, man.

From a previous post a couple of pages back:

"Not a Swastika. http://www.appalachianrcd.org/quilttrail/ well actually http://www.vacationaqt.com/trails/claiborne-county/ but same thing. Also, better to ask rather than accuse. I will also never have you over because I wouldn't want you throwing up on my grandmothers quilt.

In case you are curious, it is a pattern called Indian Trails and it is on the City Hall building in Cumberland Gap. Hopefully you can make the connection between the pattern and the location."

lol..this came up again...how does it look like a swastika?...i don't understand

don't care, that was really stupid. usually when people see that symbol they are disgusted and don't go on mapquest to verify whether it is referring to a friggen location. i mean, i understand why they put it up there, but does this mean people can go around with shirts like that and be taken seriously? bad call...

... it's not a swastika. It's a quilt pattern.

no, the pictures on that site do not have the swastika. it was on the left side of the building. trust me, it looked like a swastika. i know they dont mean to be intimidating, but the friggen thing looked like a pastel one.

Look at the website a little closer next time. This is what's on the wall of city hall in the Gap.

Yeah, I just would never think, "wow that's a Nazi swastika" after seeing that quilt pattern, but hey . . . that's me. The Nazi swastika looks very different. I guess it just depends on how knowledgeable you are on the history of the symbol.

Yea, I just saw a quilt. Guess we're crazy or something. 😛

What!! That looks more like a windmill fan than a swastika. Maybe we all need an inkblot test.

I can see how that can be confused as something that looks something like a swastika, but it is easily differentiated from a nazi swastika.

Just do a wiki search on the symbol to quickly educate yourself, and you will see that this symbol has been around since history

Once you realize that hitler's germany did not invent the swastika symbol, you'd be less offended

Its actually a broken cross, or a bent cross. From Wikipedia:

The swastika (from Sanskrit svástika ???????? ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (?) or left-facing (?) forms. The swastika can also be drawn as a traditional swastika, but with a second 90° bend in each arm.
Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. An ancient symbol, it occurs mainly in the cultures that are in modern day India and the surrounding area; sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It has long been widely used in major world religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

And the picture above looks nothing like this

swastika.png

Yes, it might be the same shape, but without those striking red and black colors, I'm sorry, it just isnt the same. No matter what you say/how you put it. Its a religious symbol that unfortunately was chosen by the Third Reich to represent the empire they were trying to build.

I agree, I dont understand why people's minds jump straight to Hitler and the nazis....

Books.... wow. Those all sound like they cost lots of dollars. Can you find them on used textbook sites, or would I be better off waiting and getting them from the bookstore? Better prices, selection, newer editions, etc...

Oh, and the equipment they got for you guys, stethoscope, otoscope, and the rest - have you been happy with them? I mean, are they good quality things? I really want to get one of the all black stethoscopes that Littman sells, just because I think they look cool, but if I can get by with one that I "have" to buy I will.

For a two day trip, you would want to do the Ridge Trail.. its a 20 miler. The Sand Cave and Whiterock are at one end of it.

Here is a link that includes info about Backcountry camping. Not much info on the actual Ridge Trail, but there is a map link on the page somewhere that probably shows it.

http://www.nps.gov/cuga/planyourvisit/outdooractivities.htm

Here is a pic of the view from Whiterocks.. stole it off the website!

Oh man that looks awesome! I have a pup that loves hiking and puddle jumping. Tell me when you guys go again, I've always wanted to go up to the sand cave. Oh, and Ive been hiking at House Mountain MJB, its got some pretty cool trails. Mom goes there all the time with her friends in the German club she is in. I've been meaning to take Sadie up there for a while now and just havent.

Its a little bit of a drive from Harrogate, but coming down to Norris Dam and going hiking/mountain biking there is also amazing. They have all kinds of trails for horses/bikes/hiking/whatever. Thats why I love living here 🙂
