LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the real swastika rose! 😛 I'm sitting in class right now and I scrolled by that sucker really fast so people wouldn't get ideas in their head. 😱

Its actually a broken cross, or a bent cross. From Wikipedia:

The swastika (from Sanskrit svástika ???????? ) is an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing (?) or left-facing (?) forms. The swastika can also be drawn as a traditional swastika, but with a second 90° bend in each arm.
Archaeological evidence of swastika-shaped ornaments dates from the Neolithic period. An ancient symbol, it occurs mainly in the cultures that are in modern day India and the surrounding area; sometimes as a geometrical motif and sometimes as a religious symbol. It has long been widely used in major world religions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

And the picture above looks nothing like this

swastika.png

Yes, it might be the same shape, but without those striking red and black colors, I'm sorry, it just isnt the same. No matter what you say/how you put it. Its a religious symbol that unfortunately was chosen by the Third Reich to represent the empire they were trying to build.

I agree, I dont understand why people's minds jump straight to Hitler and the nazis....

Thank you for that info. As i've stated before, I am Indian and this symbol is used extensively in the Hindu Religion, so much so, that Indian's put the symbol on a brand new car or home purchase

so what does that mean? It means that ignorant people will key your brand new car with a symbol like that on it..so I had to tell my friends and family to stop putting that symbol on things because most people just do not know.

It is unfortunate that someone (hitler) who is trying to 'purify' the world will resort to copying symbols from Indian's (no where close to blonde hair and blue eyes)...how pathetic

my bad. haha

its ok..now you know...and 1 less ignorant person 😉

Oh man that looks awesome! I have a pup that loves hiking and puddle jumping. Tell me when you guys go again, I've always wanted to go up to the sand cave. Oh, and Ive been hiking at House Mountain MJB, its got some pretty cool trails. Mom goes there all the time with her friends in the German club she is in. I've been meaning to take Sadie up there for a while now and just havent.

Its a little bit of a drive from Harrogate, but coming down to Norris Dam and going hiking/mountain biking there is also amazing. They have all kinds of trails for horses/bikes/hiking/whatever. Thats why I love living here 🙂

I'll take your pup along with me if he enjoys hiking...it would be my pleasure...🙂...that goes to anyone else who may want a dog/puppy sitter next year 😉

Okay people need to not keep reposting the swastika! People are really going to start thinking I'm a Nazi!! 😉

Syncope, my pup loves to go running in the woods, but I dont know if I will have her up there at the beginning or not. I'm living in the student housing for the first semester at least. I'm not sure if I will just stay there for two years or try and find a house or apartment so I can keep her with me after the first semester or not.

After much delay, confusion, and interviewing at other schools, I finally came to the decision of mailing my deposit today. So looks like I'll be joining you guys next year. Go DCOM! :hardy: Found out my deadline was this Friday too, phew!

Oooohh, them are fightin' words!!!!

All you can claim is seeing the SF airport?! Come on . . . you need to come out here and I'll show you around. You'll fall in love with SF. 😍

As for LA . . . I’m not a fan. 👎meanie:

I have to agree with prions there are better places in Calif to see than the airport. 😀

haha, have you been reading Jeff Foxworthy books? Yes, thems fightin words thar, but just wait until you get patients that actually talk like that. Its hard enough for me to understand some of them and I live here. Fun stuff...

Come see S.F.? Hmm... I am wanting to take one more trip before school starts. Its quite a drive though... I've always wanted to go though.

really you are not missing much....here I'll take you on a virtual vacation to SF. You land at the airport, there is fog and it is about 60 degrees. The fog and a slight spitting mist follows you wherever you go. You walk down the street, along the way you meet every type of bum possible, a nation of bums, follow you where ever you go. You go down to the pier, you see, bums, sea gulls and you smell dead fish.

You do other things (fill in your details here)

Everywhere you go three things follow you, bums, fog and the smell of dead fish

You get back on the plane and fly home to sunny TN, whew, glad to be home (you still smell of bums and dead fish though)

We are proud of our bums, some of them are famous and are on postcards (I'm serious) We have:
- The camouflauge bush scaring bum
- The tin man bum
- The break dancing while rapping bum
- Bum that can draw you in 5 seconds

Also, happy cows do come from California so Prions and I are going to be the happiest crew in the class 😀 I will miss my Costco and In n Out burgers though

No, happy cows come from Jamaica. I have it on authority from my sister and her husband. She said that on their honeymoon the pasture strolled right up to the beach and they could go play in the sand and water if they wanted too. Plus, can you imagine the views?? 🙂

And we went to an In and Out Burger while we were out there, and honestly, I've had burgers of the same or better quality at Wendy's or BK. Not to say I didnt enjoy them, because I did, a lot. And I like that the fries are fresh. But after all the hype I have heard, I guess it just wasnt what I thought they would be.

Oh, and LauraDO, 😆

Oh, and LauraDO, 😆

That does sound nice! But still, the thought of Carribbean Med schools never crossed our minds so I'll still stick with California as the happiest and TN as 2nd. I've heard the same hype about White Castle and have yet to try one. Any located in TN?

Hahaha.... did you just call yourself and prions cows??? Hahahahahahahhaahaha!!

Last I saw, I'm just a mice lacking his introns and DNA polymerases

Sorry Prions, I tried backing us Cali folk but I failed

Not that I know of. The closest one I have seen is maybe in Lexington, KY or even further north. Krystal is much better imho if you are in the mood for an upset stomach. I usually just hit up the taco bell though. Or Wendy's.

Come on now Laura! SF beats 360 days of rain in Portland any day. 😉

No dead fish smell where I live, but yes for bum central!

Books.... wow. Those all sound like they cost lots of dollars. Can you find them on used textbook sites, or would I be better off waiting and getting them from the bookstore? Better prices, selection, newer editions, etc...

Oh, and the equipment they got for you guys, stethoscope, otoscope, and the rest - have you been happy with them? I mean, are they good quality things? I really want to get one of the all black stethoscopes that Littman sells, just because I think they look cool, but if I can get by with one that I "have" to buy I will.

Unfortunately, getting the books isn't the cheapest thing you'll ever do. Most of the books are about $70, some more, some less. You will have a book for your 2nd semester that you will be lucky to get for under $145 (hey...its almost 2700 pages). The review books I mentioned average $30-35 each. Its not a bad price, especially considering you will be using them for two years, as well as for your board prep. But I will caution to NOT buy any books until the list comes out for you guys as it may change from what we have. As for the review books, you can buy them whenever. If you can find any of the textbooks used, that is fine too.

As for first semester books, these are the ones I highly recommend: (texts) Netters, An Osteopathic Approach to Diagnosis and Disease, the Biostats book, Clinically Oriented Anatomy (big moore) or Essential Clinical Anatomy (baby moore), USMLE Road Book: Anatomy (good questions to study), Mark's Biochem (good questions), Bates Guide to Physical Examination...(review books) Lippincotts Illustrated Reviews: Biochem (this book is a must have in my eyes - its awesome), BRS (Board Review Series) Biochem/Molecular Bio, Embryology, First Aid for the USMLE (you will use thruout first 2 years).

As for the equipment, I have been very happy with it. At least for the otoscope and opthalmascope, you don't have an option, you need to get the specific ones they tell you, and they are expensive. But you can get those, along with the Welch Allyn Elite Stethoscope. I really like the steth a lot, but my family doc just got me a Littmann Cardilogy III, so I will be messing around with both to see which I like more. But from what I can tell so far, they are pretty equal. And you will need these items your first semester.

As for extras for your laptop, I would highly recommend a wireless mouse and a minimum 4 GB flash/jump drive. I just got a 4 GB drive for under $40 on amazon. Its a pretty heavy duty one too as it can withstand a crushing weight of 2000 pounds. Since I don't know if you guys will have the same computer as use, I don't knwo if you'll get different bags than we did. What we got worked for awhile, but I did end up getting a Targus bag off amazon and I love it. This is not something you need right away, so I'd hold off on that until you see what computers you guys have. But get at least the flash drive at the beginning of school.

I would also suggest a VERY COMFORTABLE set of headphones/ear buds....you will be using them A LOT...I mean A LOT. I got a set of Bose ear buds and they are incredible....both comfortable and amazing sound. Some people prefer the noise canceling headphones, but that is up to you. The Bose ones are not, but that is OK....I kinda like that.

Wow, thanks a lot Nascardoc! Very helpful. 👍

I have a Littmann Cardio III, so can I use that or will I have to buy the diagnostic kit that the bookstore sells? BTW, what exactly comes in the kit?

Thanks 🙂

From what I understand we will have to buy the package from the bookstore because it has the opthalmascope and otoscope as well as the stethoscope. And they get us a hella good deal on them. I'm probably going to get another stethoscope just because, but as ND said, the one they get us will work great I'm sure.

Wow, thanks again, ND. 🙂 You really are just a storage facility for information. Yeah, I wasnt gonna buy any books tomorrow, but if I could go ahead and grab a few of the review books at some point this summer, I'm gonna try to. And the prices arent bad compared to some of the engineering books I have had to buy and use for one semester. I'm sure you know all about that though...

A couple of things...

The only equipment we got that I'm not real fond of is the steth...the one we have is too "short"...and I'd prefer a longer one...but you never know, they may change it for you all.

As for anatomy...NETTER'S FLASHCARDS ARE YOUR FRIEND!

I'm going to go ahead and keep mine and my Color atlas just to review stuff before any particular rotation I may need to know my anatomy cold for...

does the school get the steths for us or something? 😕

does the school get the steths for us or something? 😕

It was part of the "package" we bought through the bookstore at a discount. We got Steth's, Scope's, etc...

The scope is the real deal...I love it.

Don't get me wrong, the stethoscope is nice, I just would prefer one with a little longer tube length.

You don't have to buy the stethoscope that comes with the package deal if you already have one. I had a Littmann before school started (Awesome graduation present from Mom and Dad!), so when I went to the bookstore I just asked to buy everything but the steth. It took a little over $100 dollars of the overall price of the package... still was around $700 after that!

Totally agree with MJB about the Netters cards.. They are fantastic and travel anywhere! ... except I've gotten really funny looks when we were studying repro at Panera in Knoxville... I'm sure people were like, "Look at those cards with the peepees and vajayjays!!!!"

Thanks for the info about the stethoscope. 😀

I was so excited about being done with the sciences until I saw what we are getting ourselves into this week...

That sounds really scary. I'm getting scared just looking at our first semester! 😱 I can't believe I'm going to learn all that!

I am so looking forward to the systems portion of the schedule. It's going to be awesome.

Let me answer a question before its asked (I'm thinking ahead  😉). It is regarding studying over summer and books, etc.

Most of the review books I mentioned are new editions and shouldn't change very soon. I know this for a fact for Lippincotts Illustrated Reviews: Biochem just came out in a new edition literally right before school started - in fact, shipping delayed for a week or so b/c of the new edition. Any time you guys want to get those you can, but if you do...please do not kill yourself over the summer "trying to get ahead."

I am going to be brutally honest with you guys about "getting ahead." It won't help that much. Take biochem for example, you don't really get to the meat of it (i.e. pathways) until the 9th week, and I guaran-damn-tee you everything you did over summer, you will have forgotten most of it. Plus, you don't need to know the level of detail that you did in undergrad biochem. So you may be doing a lot of extra work.

So what I am trying to say is this (and this comes from experience, I made the mistake of taking classes to "help" me in med school and wasted a few thousand dollars): If you want to read stuff over the summer, do it for fun or a very slight touchup on the things you've already done. If you want to look at Netters, please do so, I encourage you (actually you should flip thru all of your books before using them just to become familiar with them a bit), but don't spend hours learning all of the muscles in the arm. Spend the time with family and friends b/c that is a hellava lot more important - ask any of us. Also, if any of the current DCOMers want to add to or call me a ******* for saying this (Marthea excluded b/c she'll call me a ******* anyway 😉), please chime in. I know I may be blunt, but I don't think I'm too far from the truth.

I apologize if this seems harsh, but its the truth. I know you're excited, and we are all excited for you, but you will understand once you start. I got this same exact advice from people here on SDN and I didn't listen to it, and I should have.

OK...enough of being an *** to you guys. Check out the new pool table!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And yes....it is very strange studying that section of anatomy without getting strange looks. I can only imagine what some people thought when that walked past my laptop and saw Vagina or Penis in large font on my powerpoint slides, let alone looking at Netters.....I'm sure they were all kinda like 😱 & :wow:, while some, especially the mechanics when I was getting my oil chagned were like 👍

Just one of the joys of med school 😀
