Kicia! Whats up?! Long time no speak, glad you are back around. I'm kind of wondering about the apts too, but I dont really know anyone that I would want to be roommates with to start looking for a place. Its not that I couldnt find someone, I have just had some really crappy roommates in the past and dont want to start out med school like that. Plus it will be nice to have everything paid for all at once, ya know? I'm going to be looking for a place to live for second year though, most likely by myself, but we will see. Id kind of like to get somewhere with a yard for my dog, and maybe get another one too, but we will see.

anyone have a job during med school? I'm talking about part-time somewhere. Not sure whether to do that or just live off loans. I figure I can work my *** off this summer and make some chedda

 That's awesome! I'm heading to Tahoe next weekend, so I'll keep that in mind. 😉 I'm also trying snowboarding for the first time! 😱 Wish me (and my *ss) luck!
That is awesome!! It's sad that the best ski place I have been is West Virginia...and I have been there many times.

My @$$ still hurts from my first snowboarding excursion a few weeks ago. My problem was that I could never get comfortable going sideways rather than with an open stance (so I spent most of the time switching between goofy and normal so that I stayed open 90% of the time).

Hey Rose,
Do you have an approximate cost for a day of skiing at Ober including ski rentals and lift ticket?

Rose,

I think I remember you saying you work at Ober Gatlinburg. Have you skied NC much? I just checked mapquest and it's about 3 hrs.

http://www.skinorthcarolina.com/

I've skied a lot of these resorts and I think they're worth the drive! Also, I'm heading to Mammoth MTN, in Cali this weekend! I'm a skier, not a snowboarder; so I guess I can force myself to hang out with you boarder types...HA!

I'm looking forward to a few ski breaks with you guys next year....if we have time...

I'm going to answer a bunch of little questions/comments..

A very few people work 1 or 2 days a week.. extreme part time. It probably would be hard to find that type of job around. The only real summer we're going to get it between your 1st and 2nd year, so you could work if you wanted to, but if you feel then what we all feel now, you'll be better off resting and doing something more fun. I suggest just studying and not working... and I think most at my school would agree. Med school is just too hard and already too big of a a commitment to add in another responsibility.

so what does the 'wilderness medical club' do?
One of the things we are doing this semester is Medwar, an adventure race that includes wilderness emergency medicine tasks. I'm really excited about it! Here is the site. http://www.medwar.org/

I'm looking forward to a few ski breaks with you guys next year....if we have time...
We are planning a ski trip through SOMA this year in the next month. I'm sure it will happen again next year. Everybody get excited!

Syncope - Dude.... dont get so defensive. You and MJB were talking about how much easier it was to learn to ski out in CO with "good" snow. Those comments werent directed at you, it was just some information in general. You dont have to explain every single thing you write/say here. I wont get my feelings hurt, I promise...:meanie:

don't worry man..I'm not...I just never defended learning in CO for the first time...that would freak me out..

I was saying smaller hills are better because they have a longer, flatter, run out, so it's safer for beginners....however, I also said they tend to be icier (only from my midwest experience)

but, I was telling my experience of learning on a hill with a river at the bottom...that was quite scary for a first timer

anyhow, i think it would be awesome to organize a few ski/snowboarding outings between the 2 classes between exams and during breaks 🙂

so do any 1st years know any OMM techniques to strengthen one's lateral collateral ligament? Thanks

hey rose,
i see you're like me... lol
i'd prefere to live by myself...also had some weirdo roomates in the past...🙄
and i so love being alone...and being able to choose when i want to socialize:laugh:
i like to have drama free environment while in med school lol
i may just end up living in the studio appt for the first year unless i'll find someone cool to live with😀

Ok, so how awesome is that, definitely joining the wilderness medicine club

aaaaah 😍
totally for me😀
im right on it with you laura

k...back to weaving...ill see you guys later🙂

You all have inspired me with all the skiing chat. I just booked a March 12th flight out to Utah where a friend lives to go skiing for a week. It's been a couple of years since my last ski trip, so I'm looking forward to it.

:horns: That's awesome dude...you're really lucky!! (and I'm really jealous)

If it actually stays cold enough in the Smokies to keep from being icy, I stand corrected. Just never imagined it was cold enough to keep it from getting very icy...or at the very least slushy/muddy. Come to think of it, it's hardly ever below freezing here, so it would be hard to have ice.

I agree with rose on the money to go to CO....but I'll stand by my preference for going there...simply because they have so much more space out there for bunny slopes, etc...The "slope" i learned on as a kid in CO was nothing more than the "gradual slope" at the VERY bottom of the mountain. It was maybe a 5 degree slope, if that. I also "learned" at a small ski area in Weston, MO as a kid...it was HORRIBLE...icy, overcrowded, etc...so, that's probably where my opinion of the smaller, non-Colorado ski areas came from.

I really do wanna check out the slopes around here, but the good rates are during the week...and 90 bucks for a weekend day seems steep to me.

Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers. 🙂

I'm so much fatter now than the last time I went skiing, I bet I could really do some damage to myself if I went YARD SALE in the middle of the run!

see that's the problem with midwest and especially in the chicago/WI region...it gets above freezing during the day..just around 35..enough for it to slightly melt..but then drops to 10 at night..so therefore, it all freezes..hence the icy slopes...and most midwests slopes have night skiing to increase revenue

also keep in mind, most midwest snow is man-made..and that turns out to be more "icier" than real snow..

I would avoid CO for a first timer..because the runs are long..very long ..so if you loose control...you have a long way down and pick up much more speed quickly...versus midwest slopes that are shorter, with flatter bottoms....most of the vertical is on the top 1/3 of the hill/mt...just my opionion

awesome thanks..that seems like a nice place to ski

that one is around 2 hours away..any more bigger ones that are closer? there only seems to be a few runs there..thanks
Nothing closer. There are a few in North Carolina that aren't much farther:

and then there's winterplace and snow shoe in West Virginia. I believe from knoxville they are about 4 and 6 hours, respectively

wow...209 for a season pass...if that includes all weekends and holidays. that is a GREAT deal compared to what they charge for single day passes.

What is the % of days open during the months of November-March rose?

That season pass would pay for itself in a hurry if one were to go skiing over Xmas Break for a day or two(Thanksgiving might not be cold enough), President's Day, etc..

It would probably be better for someone like me who is "going home" to Knoxville over breaks rather than returning HOME, home. 🙂

I can't wait to get over to PF/Gatlinburg again. I haven't been since August.

50k???! 😱

i'd perhaps be game for the 11... 🙄

do we have any triathletes? i'm getting excited about starting some of these...on an amateur level, of course.

I posted a link a few pages back with alot of local races

I'm with you Halloweenie! There are quite a few of us in 2011 class that will want to do a few when we can.

running is more fun than triathlon, especially if they're sprint triathlons.
sprint triathlons are for people with ocd. you barely get to love the sport you are doing, and BAM you switch to something else and BAM its over and your best friend is waiting at the finish line with no beer (or 1/2 of a warm beer), having passed all your cans out to all the good looking guys crossing the finish line. (been there, did that) It seems too frenzied, too harried or something. Too many costume changes. plus if you run alot of trails you sink like a rock in the swimming pool (been there too!)
olympic distance is better, but running is still more fun, less equipment.

Agreed!

How are you I was just about to pm you, how'd your mcat go

Running is not more fun than triathlons. It is actually what I would call "less fun".

Half the fun of triathlons is going to the races and checking out everyone's gear.

OKOK I concede I have definitely checked the gear, not once, but several times. Sometimes the gear outweighs the race. Sometimes the gear is the only reason I'm there.

In running, too, you get to tail the one you check out, then you get to draft off them for awhile as you mimic their gait, breathe their air, dodge when they spit, revel in their majesty, kick when they kick. You get to pace off their pace until they bore you and you decide to outpace them, or drop back if they supercede you.

In triathlon open water swimming, however, it's like a bunch of swirling lemming bodies in a maelstrom clawing forth to the conflagration, swimming over your head, pushing you down in the water and climbing over you so the meanest and cruelest lemming can get ahead. I hated that part of it. Every lemming for himself.

Haha, more like ADD!!!! That's the part I love! I'm not a very good runner, so I really love that I can make up for it with biking and swimming.. but since I haven't done a race yet, we'll see. 🙄

Hey, Piratesse! Right on. I can't get into the whole wet soaking body on the bike thing either. I always freeze my **s off. Wet hair under biking helmet, soaked to the bone. Making strange glooping sounds in the bike shoes. Wet socks. Not my idea of fun. I really prefer duathlons to tri's just because of the entire swimming-transition-to-biking. Biking then running is cooler than swimming, then biking, then running in my book!😀

LauraDO thanks for the PMs last night. 24R is not that bad, I guess. Wish me luck!!! I was proud of my VR 10 and my BS 9 but the PS just kicked me down into the ditch. I guess I wasn't meant to design magnetic braking systems for roller coasters!

I wish I could find running "fun".

you know, I am a firm believer that some people were meant to be runners and others simply were not. I have found running is very 'manic depressive' with people. You either LOVE it to the point of insane obssession (I mean after all, if you really think about it, running over 26 miles just for the heck of it is rather insane, and don't even get me started on ultra runners) Or you HATE it so much that you want to puke if you have to run half a mile

Happy Leap day everyone.....

im def not meant to be a runner....i feel like im dying by the end of the 2nd mile...im better with short distance running...what is that?...increased red or white muscle fibers? I forget

i much prefer sprinting to jogging, and i much prefer lifting to running. sadly they go hand in hand. as far as muscle fibers go? lets not talk shop - you get plenty of that later on and i dont even want to think about muscles right now (only a huge exam on them monday...)

Let's just say I prefer wind sprints.....so stuck to sports where those were most applicable.

Weightlifting, Wrestling, Football.

But, mini-triathlons sound fun. I like biking and swimming.

do you guys have a lot of gunners at DCOM?

do you guys have a lot of gunners at DCOM?

Well, I dunno know about the class of 2011, but I plan on being the biggest gunner that ever lived, so watch out. I'm reeeeally smart and like to make other people feel bad about themselves by rubbing my smartness in their face! Wwwaaahahahaha!:laugh:

I heard MJB, Nascardoc, Lamont and The Piratesse are all pretty fierce gunners, too.

I'm good with any sports that require strapping something to your feet...rollerblading, biking, skiing, skating, etc....

not soo good with the long distance stuff and hand-eye coordination..ie..baseball

There's something I never imagined I'd be accused of. 🙂

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. 😉 The thought of having "gunners" at DCOM made me a little loopy.

LMAO! That's funny ortho. Why would you ever ortho in a million years ortho think I was a gunner??? There's no ortho way you're gonna catch ortho me working that hard. 😀
