I agree, I’ll sign a petition that every single person upon turning 18 should get a lambo as a welcome to adulthood present.

^ Sounds more fair than forgiving unequal levels of debt between various graduates of levels of education.

It may work out great for the doctors/dentists in other countries who are getting their debt paid, but it either raises the competition to enter those professions and raises the financial burden for the rest of the tax payers. Or it drops the value of those professions meaning those professions get paid less.

So how does this work out favorably for the majority of people who aren’t doctors/dentist or who aren’t getting hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of education for free if the doctors/dentist maintain their pay?

or how is it favorable if the doctors/dentist get a pay cut in order to subsidize this massive loan forgiveness?

Theres a reason that those countries have health professionals that make significantly less than the US or their tax burden is significantly higher for the rest of the population.

TLDR;
Nothing is free. There are consequences for every decision.

Well I guess agree to disagree then, because I believe that people paying more in taxes to invest in Healthcare and education is better than having people take out loans they can't pay so they can default on it later as the student loan debt is 1.67 trillion. Sounds like we disagree on the basic fundamentals

Ok I guess we think differently. I think that they can pay those loans it will take more time and more hard work depending on the amount, but with the high income a dentist has it’s something they can do. To me it’s just a matter of paying the consequences of a choice.

The lack of empathy for an entire generation of cognitively children who have their lives ruined by predatory student loans is exactly why people like Bernie Sanders and AOC are sadly becoming increasingly more popular among the youth. 18 year olds can't even legally rent a car, can't legally drink, can't even buy cigarettes now can but we expect them to be able to make the biggest financial decision of their life at 18, no questions asked? In today's society, we shouldn't even let them vote. I think the voting age needs to be raised to like 26.

Case and point as to why the youth are increasingly supporting socialism. You don't get to $1.6 trillion in student loans without the entire system being rotten. You're really not helping the free market's cause here...

Go into sales and work your butt off, (that's one idea, but there are plenty of legal/ethical ways to do it, someone sold them on a 200k english degree so I'm sure they could sell other people into some product that may or may not be worth it) no one ever forced them to go 200k in debt for that, but if they chose that then now they have to learn to pay for the consequences. They will come out the other side a better person for it.

They could even become and English teacher if that's their passion and pay off the debt gradually while living frugally. That's life man.

The thing is they chose to go 200k in debt for that degree. They could've been smarter and easily went 20k in debt for the same degree. Why should the tax payers be responsible for their lack of responsibility?

I personally believe any one who pays the consequences of their decisions is given an opportunity to learn and become a better person from it, whether they take that opportunity for what it's worth is again, their choice.

The reason it’s so high is because the government has no ceiling on lending, they (by your version) have “empathy” and obviously are so concerned about the welfare of these poor students and possibly can’t let them go without the money they need for school. So schools then take advantage and raise tuition at a drastic rate, government keeps giving and it’s a vicious cycle.

In Canada, majority of dental students are funded privately, and offering it at 3-4% rates. It’s no coincidence that it’s also WAY cheaper to attend there. For example, attending dental school in Canada as an international student is comparable to my state school. For the same degree. Same quality of education at a decent school. So there are ways, loan forgiveness is not one of them.

The original system actually wasn't too bad as it was designed to allow poorer people to afford college at a reasonable price so it was originally seemingly empathetic. But it got corrupted in the 90's when Sallie Mae got privatized (at least this is my limited understanding) and as you said schools took advantage of the situation.

Because a 17 year old making the biggest financial decision of his life with loan money guaranteed by the federal government who doesn't examine his future ability to pay the loan back, who is intoxicated by a culture that tells him he has to go to college to get a degree as his entire future depends on it, who is surrounded by educators and family who tell him the degree will be worth it, who will face a job market where his wages are stagnant and will likely get a job that doesn't require a college degree, just simply needs to pay the borrowed money back at an unfairly high interest rate. It's that simple. It's actually not that simple. The entire system is corrupt. These students are victims and deserve some sort of way out as soon as we get colleges to lower tuition. If it was simple, the student loan debt wouldn't be $1.6 trillion and climbing.
