Low score on NMBE 6

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
scored a whopping 203 on my 1st practice exam. 🙁
now im out $60 and want to scream!!!!
Just finished the first pass through Taus. I cant believe I scored so low. there were so many pharm questions, i have not really studied pharm yet.

Everyone on here scores like 230 to begin with. Ughh i feel so unmotivated right now. I have 5 weeks to until my exam. any advice? i have not done UWorld yet and will start it ASAP. Pharm/Anatomy/Genetics/Biochem were my weakest areas according to the feedback.

Ugh I wanted a 250+ now I have to be 'realistic'

Dude, if you haven't even studied pharm yet, you can absolutely add some serious points to your score. Hit it hard, do all the UW pharm questions, and (from what I understand) you'll be money for the exam. As for the rest, just keep at it. Isn't 6 supposed to be one of the tougher ones anyway? If you look back on the 2009 scores and experiences thread, there were definitely people (ZagDoc, I think it was?) who busted it for 5-6 weeks and added something like 40 points. Even if you can't break 250, I don't think it's unrealistic to add, say, 35 points, which would be a great score.

Hit it hard and be relentless. Good luck. :luck:

First off, your biggest mistake is comparing yourself to the SDN crowd. I don't believe I've seen anyone post a score that wasn't in the high 230's, but if you look at the statistics, more than 80% of people don't score that high. There are plenty of people who would be happy to get a 203 on Step 1, let alone a 203 with 6 weeks of studying left.

If you haven't studied pharm at all yet - one of the "3 P's" - you have a lot of gains to make. Psych and biostats are exceptionally easy topics for most people, so there's a lot of improvement to be had there, as well.

Most importantly, don't psych yourself out. You're still on pace for a very good score. Okay, maybe you're not going to hit the mid 250's like most people around here seem to (though you still might...), but what's wrong with a 230? If you don't jump at least 20 points in 6 weeks of dedicated study, I'd be pretty surprised. Don't get discouraged or stressed out because that's going to undercut your studying significantly. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working.

👍 - I'm about to take my baseline NBME in a few minutes. I know I'm not as smart as the superstars on here, and so I will be pretty pleased if I get a near passing score... here goes nothing.

good luck! thanks for the words milk. idk im already jaded, but hopefully i will get my motivation back tomorrow. its hard to see be reading these forums before taking the test or while in during the study period, and realize that you may realistically never be at the 'that level'

Yeah...sometimes it's hard for us "special" kids to accept that we're not really "special" anymore. I definitely didn't have any illusions that I was going to be at the top of my med school class, but the brilliance some people here exhibit is just astounding. For instance, 2 of my classmates got 99's on the NBME basic sciences exam. A 94 predicts a 260, according to this chart I'm looking at, and since the Step 1 score increases by 5 per 2 points on the NBME, that puts them at a 270+ or so. Now, I realize the NBME doesn't exactly have the most incredible predictive power, but even if it missed their scores by 50 freaking points, they're still hitting 230's with no studying. That's entirely out of my league: another world of intelligence.

Anyway, the point is that you have to play your own game and forget about everyone else. If you did well, you did well. It doesn't matter that someone else trumped you by 30 points.

Dude, you are right on pace. With 203 5 weeks out is solid. In 5 weeks, you will hit pharm, probably are 2000K questions, and couple read throughs of first aid. Plus your last few days of review will be MONEY! 250 is still WELL within your range!

I'm pretty close to the same boat as you. Just got a 209 on nbme 6 with 30d left before the test. I still have to cover pharm, neuro, micro, & path.

It was inspiring to read this thread.

I bombed big time on my baseline test--which happened to be this NBME6.

*crashed for a day*

Then next thing I took was the free 150 just few days ago., which gave a very "feel good" feeling.I am still studying hard under that feeling.

Haven't taken another NBME yet, honestly , I kinda got intimidated and freaked out with that NBME earlier.

Now ,with 3 weeks out, I am almost done with my weaknesses and UW, so its time to face my 'fear' again-an NBME *GULP*

GL !👍
