Lurkers, don't be shy!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello everyone! I'm a newbie to this forum, it is such a great source and I wish I've known about this earlier! I'm a third year bio-medical science undergraduate and going on to my last year this coming fall. As many, I am looking foward to get into the dvm program! Hope to meet more of you who are sharing the same path as I am! :xf:🙂

Alright, coming out of my lurking cave... just a few questions...

What sort of MCAT scores would get me into a good Vet school?

Why did you guys choose Vet over Med, Dental, Pharm, etc?

Do you think working in a vet clinic all day would dissuade anyone from owning pets themselves?

What sort of MCAT scores would get me into a good Vet school?

I got in without even taking the MCAT. My application was that stellar!

No but seriously, we take the GRE, not the MCAT.

Why did you guys choose Vet over Med, Dental, Pharm, etc?

I never even considered the others. It was a non-issue.

Do you think working in a vet clinic all day would dissuade anyone from owning pets themselves

Uhm...well I guess it could dissuade some people, yes. Not sure why though.

What sort of MCAT scores would get me into a good Vet school?

The only school a good MCAT will get you into is University of Guelph - Ontario Vet College. Like HopefulAg said, every other school requires the GRE. And generally the GRE will not get you in alone. It's one part of your whole application.

Why did you guys choose Vet over Med, Dental, Pharm, etc?

Vet med: I love animals, I love medicine. I did a vet assistant course, and loved the surgery, diagnostics, etc, but hated cleaning instruments and doing laundry all day. Decided to take the leap into vet med.

Med: Admittedly, I'm considering applying. Vet med is definitely my first choice, but if I don't get into AVC before I get my BA, I'll apply to med school.

Dental: Very briefly thought of it. No interest in teeth (I love my dentist, but I think focusing on one part of the body day in and day out would drive me nuts).

Pharm: Never considered it.

Do you think working in a vet clinic all day would dissuade anyone from owning pets themselves?

I'm sure there's someone out there that would. It's a bit like asking if working in a garage all day would dissuade a mechanic from owning a car.

What sort of MCAT scores would get me into a good Vet school?

University of Missouri and Cornell will both accept it, but will also accept the GRE. Unless you are applying to those and University of Guelph like Coquette mentioned, you're better off taking the GRE.

:hello: Hiiii. I'm 24 years old, originally from Hawaii, but moved to California three years ago because my husband got into med school here. I didn't originally know that I wanted to be a vet, so I did a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science (with an emphasis in integrated circuit design 😱). Long story short, I didn't graduate when I suppose to because I decided it would be cheaper to finish pre-reqs as an undergraduate. So, next year, when I graduate with my BS in Pre-Med, I'll be applying for my first cycle of applications! (I am scared out of my mind thinking about that!!)

I own two dogs, a St. Bernard and a Great Dane, and two cats: a siamese mix and a havana brown kitten who is destroying everything it can. I have an array of veterinary/animal experience, but like other lurkers, I don't feel like I'm doing enough. This summer, I'll be flying to South Africa to stay at CARE, a baboon conservation, so hopefully that'll add a little oomph to my application.

Welcome KGemma! Since you're now living in CA, I'm assuming you'll be applying to Davis . . . If you have any questions about the school, I'll be starting in September, and I'd be happy to answer any questions I can 🙂

YES! I will be applying to Davis!! Thanks so much much offering to answer any questions (be prepared, I will have many once I start to apply). I'll also be applying to Western because it is closer to where my husband and I currently are. Unfortunately, where I go will all boil down to where my husband gets his residency. He's taking his step 1 (boards) next week! My knees are shaking for him!

Awesome! I'd love to answer any questions, as I'm sure other current and upcoming students would as well . . .

I didn't end up applying to Western, although I had my application all ready to go (I wasted a ton of time answering all 11 of their supplemental essays for nothing!). So I know some info about that school too. I went to one of their summer applicant workshops, and would really recommend it, especially if you're already in the area. You can find more info here:

http://webinfo.westernu.edu/preview...idebar&utm_medium=psw&utm_campaign=previewday

Good luck to you and your husband :luck:

Hi everyone 🙂

I am not back in school yet. I will start my pre-vet next year.

I am 34 years old. I have a 12 yo son and a 14 yo daughter. I have a husband who I've been with 8 years, married 5.

Unlike most of the other non-trad students I have not had another career. I had an 8 month stint in tech school and a semester in college where I just quit going because of child care issues. I've had 3 short term jobs. So other than being a Mom for the past 15 years I have very very little to show for my life.

I have been tossing around the idea of going to school and getting a job for years but I had left over student loans in default that needed paid off. I'm down to 2,000 so as soon as we pay that I'll get started. I didn't have a ton of loans but they pretty much doubled and we live off of one income so it's been slow going.

I was not at all supported in going to school as a child/teen. I ended up getting married 8 days after I turned 18 and having a kid at 20 and another at 22. I didn't have a good support system and I had kids so I couldn't just set out on my own and go to school and survive off of student loans... so I did the mom thing.

Now I have a supportive family (in hubby and kids) and a dream that's lasted as long as I can remember 🙂 So I will start pre-vet next year and if all of my cards line up I'll be in the class of 2019 and be a vet at 43!

I have 2 dogs, 2 cats, a bunny, and 7 sugar gliders. I have had many animals over my life. I do not have ANY vet experience but I do have a very close relationship with my vet so I hope once I tell her my plans she'll help me get shadow experience.

So thats a bit about me 🙂 So happy to be here!

Hello!
I'm guilty of lurking as well...

I've got a CS degree too (though I always was more theoretical than practical)! I'm doing a Masters at UCDavis and starting the DVM here in the Fall so also can answer any questions you've got.

Hello!!
Ive been around for a little while but I havnt formally introduced myself. I am currently an undergrad at the University of Florida ( GO GATORS!!!😀). I graduated high school this May with my AA degree so I will be applying to vet schools in 2 years. ( which means I only have about a year and a half left to get close to a bajillion experience hours 😱) I have learned sooo much from you guys, you have no idea how much help everyone has been!!! Keep up the great work 🙂 p.s. this was an awesome thread idea 🙂

Hm, I got the timeline in April and I haven't even sent my letter of intent yet. Do you know what the average/competitive GPA is for vet scholars?

Sorry it took me so long to reply: family vacation without internet :smack:

Anyway, when I talked to an advisor about Vet Scholars a long time ago, they said the competitive GPA was somewhere around a 3.7 or so. That was in fall of 2008, though, so it may have changed.

Hello Everyone,
I, too, plead guilty to lurking, so I guess it is time for me to come out of my shell and introduce myself.
I am 20 years old and in my junior year of college (majoring in Biology with a minor in psychology). I am planning on applying to Ohio State (and possibly CSU) next summer/fall and have been working in a SA clinic for the past 3 years. Currently, I am working toward getting more experience with large animals and wild life as well as continuing with my SA clinic job.
This is an AMAZING site and group of people, and I am very quickly getting addicted :help: I just want to wish good luck to all those going through the application process right now and thank everyone for all the useful advise and support 🙂 I look forward to getting to know you all!

This post is as good as any to announce my presence. I found this forum about a week ago while doing research about becoming a vet; and have spent hours here every day since. A little information about me: I'm 26 and in the US Army. I'll be getting out soon and going to start my undergrad studies; something that I am genuinely excited about. Also I am really looking forward to busting my butt to be able to go to vet school.

So, I guess this is the best place to introduce myself and get over my fear of posting. I have been a lurker for awhile, and am not just gaining the courage to post. I think it was a bit intimidating for me to post since a lot of you guys really seem to know one another. I am a rising junior, who will hopefully apply next summer. Sadly, I was all set to apply this summer, but I got in to a severe accident last summer and missed fall semester completely, and had to take a light spring semester. Speaking of which, do you think the fact that I missed a semester of school and had to take a mere 13 hours (two humanities, econ course, and organic chem). I don't want to use my accident as a crutch or be defined by it, but I do not want to be overlooked either because of it. Any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Don't worry about people seeming to know one another. It is an ongoing process and you will be quickly welcomed, and can be part of the group just by participating. I have only been posting for 4 months and feel like everyone knows me (maybe a little too much).

As for the missed time, there is an explanation section about grades in VMCAS and an accident should surely be mentioned. I can't imagine any adcom viewing it adversely as long as you return to a full time schedule (or if finishing up if you had a full schedule previously). It might even give you something to talk about... i.e your ability to overcome adversity or to refocus your efforts etc etc.

Good luck. Look forward to hearing more.

Surprisingly enough, coming back after the accident (even though I was taking 13 as compared to 16-18 hours per semester) my grades were really well. I guess I was just worried that the adcom would wonder why I went from taking a rigorous course load to taking mostly humanities. I guess looking back now I feel rather foolish for doing what I did, but in the moment I was so terrified that my injuries were going to prevent me from taking on harder courses as well as keep up with PT and doctors, but I guess hindsight truly is 20/20.

Hi, I've been lurking for a few months but this thread finally gave me the guts to post something. 😳 I'm currently a music major (I play the oboe, as my username says...) and will graduate next year. I love music but i've decided i don't want to do it as a career...so, i'm going to do either nursing or vet tech. I'm not sure if i have what it takes to be a vet or a doctor, but i've been shadowing my vet and volunteered at the zoo and i discovered i really like medicine. I know this forum is for pre-vet students, but it has some really good info about vet med info in general so i've finally given in and joined.

Klahowya all!

Yay, a post just for lurkers like me 🙂 I've been trying to get more involved in the forums as I've been writing my personal statement. I'm hoping to get up the courage to ask someone from the PS readers post to take a look over mine!

I've been out of college 3 years working as a research associate managing transgenic mouse colonies, and I've finally decided to go back to school to become a laboratory animal veterinarian. Anyone else interested in being a lab animal vet?

HI everyone, like a few other new people I am new to this forum as well. I have posted a few times but never introduced myself.. Well to make some people feel better I am 30..lol recently went back to school.. I wanted to be a vet my whole life so now I am finally going to try. I have a year to 2 more years of finishing pre reqs then going to apply. My major is vet technology with a specialization in pre vet med. I love this website and forum because it keeps me so motivated and to see so many people with the same almost impossible goals and hard classes is nice!!

The oboe! Ah, fond memories of playing oboe parts on tenor saxophone in band so many years ago are now all flooding back to me.

I suppose I should join in... Hi, I've posted a few times too, never really properly introduced myself either. I'm a 21 year old Texas resident who is a senior biomed major at CSU. I'm applying this go around. I'm terrified and have been obsessing over it for the better part of this year, and SDN has helped me in so many ways that I now feel like I should be giving back instead of lurking around so much. I change exactly what part of vet med I want to go into every six months or so it feels like. Nice to meet you all 😀

Hello... ive been a lurker since in found this site.
Hy name is jessica from brooklyn nyc, 20 years old and after years of loving animals have decided to attempt to get into veterinary school. I just wanted to thank everyone for their posts; the questions/answers will def help when i apple next summer!

Hi!!! I am pretty new here! and i've posted several times only! so i guess i'll come say hi to everybody! 🙂
my name is Alice and i'm from taiwan. I've had education in taiwan, canada and i am now in the US studying at UW - seattle 🙂 anyone from WA???

i am interested in lab animal medicine 🙂 also became interested after working in a lab with mice

I'm working is Seattle right now, Alice! How are you liking it here? I grew up in Washington. Sadly, it hasn't been a very nice summer so far...

BlacKAT33, yay for lab animals! I really enjoy working with mice and rats, but I'm hoping to get an externship somewhere that has other research species, since I only have rodent experience.

Hello all! I've been lurking around this forum for the past couple of weeks. I'm currently in the process of applying to three vet schools (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota).
I'm from Nebraska and in my 5th year of undergrad. Only two semesters left 😀

I know! summer this year sucks....I just went on a fieldtrip down to south coast to look at beached birds with my biology class 🙂 It was fun! Unfortunately i have a final coming up on Wed...🙁

Hi!!!! my bf is from that area! He went to skyview high school and his sister graduated from WSU! are you excited for school? haha

Hi everyone,
I've also been lurking for the past few weeks.
Here's some info about me:
I'm not sure when I will apply to vet school (probably in 2 yrs), I first want to see how I do on the GRE. Veterinary medicine is a big part of my life, my father (WSU 1980), cousin (CSU 1999), and fiance (LSU 2003) are veterinarians. I shadowed/helped my father (large animal vet) for about 10 yrs.
i have worked as a histotechnician for the past 4 yrs, so I'm very interested in anatomic pathology. Not sure what else to say.

Well, at least you won't have a hard time getting letters of recommendation 😉.

No, but really, I wish I had that kind of LA experience.

Welcome to SDN

Does anybody know if i can actually use my father and fiance as LORs? I just assumed this wouldnt look as good compared to someone who had LORs from non relatives or significant others? I'm pretty sure when I do apply, I will already be married to my fiance and I plan to hyphenate my married name and maiden name.

Maybe some schools will allow this, but some of the schools I applied to specifically stated no LOR's from relatives. Check into the schools you are applying to

I was looking for a good thread to introduce myself in because I didn't want to start a new thread. I will be applying to vet school for the first time for Fall 2011 admittance.

I'm really glad I found this forum as it looks like it will be a great support network. I write my GRE at the end of August and I'm returning to undergrad in the fall.

I graduated with my BSc with an Animal Science Major in 2007. I have always intended on applying to vet school but was always missing one or two courses. When I graduated, I was really interested in lab work so I worked as a lab technician for several years. My first job was for a Pharmacy College that focused on pharmacokinetic research for various types of drugs. I then found an amazing job opportunity that I thought might turn into my career. I worked for a Government of Canada (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) lab, where I tested aquaculture species for illegal or restricted antibiotic drugs. Unfortunately, due to budget constraints my term there was not extended (after a year and a half). Needless, to say I was devastated.

After a few days of sulking over it I had decided to take it as a sign that that's not what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Everyone used to always ask whether or not I was going to apply and they were always a bit disappointed when I'd explain that I had a good paying job that I loved doing. Now, that I no longer have that job, I had realized that I had been settling. Being a vet was my childhood dream, ever since I was a young child and I would put ace bandages on our poodle. I have always been so interested and fascinated by animals....everything from turtles and snakes to horses and cows. I started volunteering at the SPCA as soon as I was old enough to do so. I actually was asked to return in a year because I was only 11 and you can only start walking dogs at 12.

I grew up on a small Indian Reservation in New Brunswick, Canada and everyone knew me as an animal lover. I couldn't tell you how many phone calls I have received from people looking for advice or even asking me if I can dematt their dog or trim their dogs/cats/bird's nails.

So, now I'm 26 years old and returning to undergrad in the fall. I will be re-taking a lot of my pre reqs since they are almost all older than 6 years old. It will also give me a chance to boost my GPA. This will be my first time applying to vet school and I'm incredibly anxious and nervous about the whole ordeal.

My boyfriend's brother and his wife are both vets, so I have them to help me with the process. Unfortunately though, they practice in Alberta and I live on the East Coast.

I'll be applying to AVC, Tufts, and Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan. I'm looking into one or two other American School but I'm not too sure yet. I'd apply to OVC (Guelph) too but they require you to write an MCAT and I don't want to have to write a second standardized test for what would be my 3rd choice school.

I'm looking forward to learning more about everyone!

I realized that I didn't include anything about my GPA or vet experiences.

My GPA is on the low side 3.1ish. But a lot of that was me being young and stupid and immature. I doubted myself so think I just never bothered trying. But now, my maturity has sank in and I'm over that. I'm ready to get my head in the game and do awesome!

Just this summer:
I'll have about 100 hours at a small animal hospital
At least 50 hours with a wild life vet that runs her own rescue
At least 50 hours with a vet that specializes in exotics (rodents, reptiles, birds)
At least 50 hours with an equine vet
And I'm hoping for another 50 hours with a bovine vet

When I was working at the university, I was working really closely with the university veterinarian. She taught me how to catheterize the carotid artery, so I was able to learn minor surgery as well as take various workshops on anesthetic technique and lab animal handling. I'm just not sure what I should put on my application for hours. Half of this job was prepping the rats for blood collection and the other half was doing some analytical stuff. I probably have anywhere from 50-100 hours working with this vet but the job itself was over 2000 hours. Some of this was working with lab animals the rest was operating the lab equipment or interpreting the results.

I've worked at the SPCA a few summers and one of these summers I was in charge of animal health care. I routinely did vaccinations, euthanasias, ear cleaning, defleaing, nail trims...etc.

Other than that I've worked at various stables. I've fostered puppies, dogs, and even an orphaned raccoon until she was old enough to go to a wildlife park. There's other tid bits here and there but that's my major experiences worth mentioning.

Hello everyone, my name is Melanie and I am really glad that I found this forum - just wish I had found it a few years ago!

I applied to vet school after graduating from undergrad, but after only getting waitlisted and nothing more, I was a little discouraged and decided to pursue a Master's in animal behavior. As I continued to go further with my Master's I realized that I still want to be a vet more than anything else.

So last year I applied to my in-state school (VMRCVM) and got waitlisted (again)🙄. It was the only school I applied to last year because my hubby really wanted me to stay close, but we have talked about it and location is no longer an issue, so I am definitely broadening my horizons this year.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. I'll turn 30 a month and a half after I start at UC Davis this Fall - there are a lot of us here on SDN who are around our age and quite a few who are older! It ain't no thing. 😉

I am glad to see that I am not the only one who is older. I will be 30 at the end of the month, and would not be starting vet school any earlier than age 31.

I am really excited to explore this site more!

I'm pretty sure when I do apply, I will already be married to my fiance and I plan to hyphenate my married name and maiden name.

That's a very bad idea - don't do it! If they're related to you, objectivity goes out the window. Because you have so many vet relatives, it shouldn't be hard for you to find vet friends of your vet relatives you can work for who can write a more objective LOR.

Hey, I've been lurking a few weeks, but you all seem pretty friendly and all the threads I've looked through have helped me out a lot, so I figured I should join up and see if I couldn't learn even more and eventually possibly help out some other people like me.
I'm a 23 year old guy from CT, but went to undergrad in CA and graduated in 09 with a degree in bio (still got a few pre-reqs to finish for the vet schools though, microbiology, I'm looking at you). After that, worked in Wildlife Rehab for most of a year in Western NC and then South FL, and now I'm doing the Vet Tech thing at a SA hospital back in my home state.
While I hate applying to things, I'm actually really excited about filling out the apps for vet school, I guess because it feels like I'm finally doing something that'll really set me on the road I want to follow for good. Anyway, as you might be able to tell, I love my wildlife (Raccoons have always been some of my favorites, hence the name) and currently am really interested in Wildlife and Zoo medicine. I really like all things large as well though, and emergency stuff has always been my favorite work, so I'm really all over the place with what I want to do.
Eh, more than enough time to decide if I manage to get in, and if not, well, I guess I'll have even more. Good luck to everyone applying this fall, hopefully I'll overcome my fear of posting and get to know some of you before we get into the schools we want. And to all the regulars, thanks for not seeming too scary and for all the help you've given others that I am currently leaching, haha

Hey everyone! I'm currently a senior at my university making a last minute decision to go for it this fall instead of putting off applications another year. Which, naturally, was a stressful idea. So I've been trying to get all my ducks in a row, working at the vet and getting grades and the like. Some of these supplements are vicious! I'm so surprised they want to know what kind of art form I would be. They can't judge that...can they? Hope to get to know some of you better, been lurking a bit and everyone's been great🙂

Well I suppose I should introduce myself. I am 20 and a senior and applying to vet school with this application cycle. Having gone from pre-med to pre-vet at the beginning of the 2nd semester of my junior year, I've been struggling to get vet experience hours in. Crossing my fingers that I get in on this application cycle and good luck to everyone else!

I'm so surprised they want to know what kind of art form I would be. They can't judge that...can they?

...Which school was that? I applied to a ton of places, and don't recall stumbling across that question. It's probably more to see how you write, than what you write. Pick a point and make it, and you should be fine.

It's Tufts, but you can choose between 3 different prompts and that's just one of them. From the contact I had with the admission office, they really seem to love those prompts. They just want to get a perspective on who you are as a person outside of vet med. Have fun with it!

One of them was "what part of a sports team are you?" and I was tempted to say "soccer mom. no talent, bossy, loud, delusional, and critical. Describes me to a T."

In the end, I chose the "Historical Figure you want to dine with" one. If anyone wants a copy, I can PM it. It's not one where I'm worried about anyone plagiarizing. If they did, that would be so sooooo dumb. It was pretty fun writing it though!

Hello! 😀

I am a recent lurker...started lurking just a few days ago, actually! I've just decided that I no longer want to go to optometry school and have finally realized that I need to do something I love - and what do I love? AMNIMALS. So here I am! 🙂

I'm entering my 3rd year at UCLA, have some ~320 hours research experience (which I ended up quitting) and ~60 wildlife rehab hours from high school (not sure if vet schools care about high school experience though...) and a 3.4ish science/cumulative GPA. I'm a bio major and have found this forum to be very helpful! I'd like to make some friends since I don't know any other pre-vets in real life. Aiming for UC Davis (in a few years)! :xf:

Nice to meet you all 😍

Welcome hellohelloduh 🙂

If you have any questions about Davis, there are a lot of us incoming students who would love to help you out! Find us on the Davis c/o 2014 or 15 thread. Good luck to you 👍
