Mayo 2008!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you do get put on hold, just not waitlisted until March. It might be called something other than hold, too...

And you never find out your rank, but if you get in you can bet it was pretty good 🙂

Congrats sc71football.

My nose would grow very much bigger if I said I weren't jealous.

Congrats on the first SDN Mayo acceptance for 2008!

However, you just made me very nervous now and even more anxious to hear back from Mayo! However, seeing how its 5 pm now in MN ,we may have to wait another day...

I'm actually pretty excited that I can now put my anxiety to rest for the evening and perhaps get some studying done!

Here's another one waiting for word from Mayo. I was one of those last minute applications, so we'll see. How long did any of you wait for secondaries?

Mondays are bad days for me... way too much free time. I suppose we must wait another day(or more) to hear hmm.

Alright, lovelies, tell me - "Why Mayo?" I am so happy for all of you, esp the one acceptance so far...I am pulling for the rest of you 🙂.

I am incredibly excited about my upcoming interview, but my response to "Why Mayo" is a little creaky right now since I haven't seen the school in person. It's basically:
- Reputation for amazing clinical training
- Rochester is consistently ranked as one of the best places in the country to live
- Low tuition price

Why do YOU love Mayo?

Hello, I am also waiting to hear from Mayo after my interview. I am a new SDN member but not new to SDN--I have been following this thread for a while. 🙂
Congrats to the one person who got in :hardy: --and best of luck to all of you with interviewis. My best response to the "Why Mayo" question is to go to the Mayo website and prepare your own answer.

Let me say that it is a small consolation to know that my interview is done--now my file is complete and I can only wait and wait! After waiting all day, I feel like this --> 😱.

I just had a quick question regarding the secondary: are there any essays for the application? I paid my fee a while ago, but Im still waiting for a response. I know we have to submit letters but is that it? What else does the process entail?

Its great to see so many people excited about Mayo! I just wish I had applied a bit earlier!!!

If I had even two seconds to spare I probably would spend them biting my nails off in anticipation. So, I guess it's not such a bad thing that between classes and the lab I spent 16 hours at school today. And now I'm too tired to worry. 😴

Yeah, well, I'll cover the graveyard Mayo worry-shift for you guys. I'll be the one sitting up watching my inbox at 1:36am CST tonight for an interview invite. And this Friday night. And next Monday night again. And then next Friday night. And then I'll cry. 😳 Two more hours to go tonight! Am I being silly or what?

And you know what? If I do get that invite, you bet I'm going to ask Jane in person what's up with this 1:30am CST invite deal.

Just got my secondary this morning. Wooo-hoooo!

I think they may space out their secondary requests to keep things moving for them. Anyone have to wait a long time for a rejection?

Thoffen, when did you get the you've paid email? (I'm waiting anxiously for some news of a secondary. 🙂
Thanks!

im thinking about calling jane today and asking her some random q and see if she tellls me anything ... i cant take this anymore

as expected, I'm on hold. This email came this afternoon.

"Dear applicant,

On behalf of our Admissions Committee, I would like to thank you for taking the time to visit Mayo Medical School and grant us the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your future career in medicine. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed your time at our school.

Your application is currently on a hold status. The Admissions Committee will continue to periodically review all of our ranked applicants until all interviews are completed. We assure you that you will be notified as soon as action is taken on your application.

We thank you for your patience with this process, and please notify us of any changes in your address.

Sincerely,

Patricia A. Barrier, M.D., MPH
Chair, Admissions Committee
Associate Dean of Student Affairs"

Good luck everyone!

sad ... got the hold toohttp://img.studentdoctor.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

do u guys remem what jane said about how many get off hold???

I received the hold status as well... 🙁

My heart is breaking for you guys. 🙁 :luck:

But it's not a rejection, so it's somewhat good news, right? Or don't they send any rejections out post-interview?

From the admissions website:

The Admissions Committee meets weekly from October through March to review and rank each candidate.

During the admissions cycle, a review of all ranked candidates will occur every four to six weeks, at which time appointment offers are made.
Those applicants not receiving appointments during the initial review will receive notification of their "hold status." During each subsequent review, all previously reviewed applicants remain active and eligible to receive appointment offers.

This periodic and "rolling" admissions process allows for all applicants to remain active for admissions consideration, irrespective of their interview dates, until the class is filled by March 15.

Not sure but it seems that you are on hold regardless of how poorly they think of you.

Unless it's possible to be told that you're unranked (i.e., rejected) post-interview. Otherwise, it sounds like you're right.

I'm on hold, too. Strange to have Mayo holding me (instead of the other way around... bad joke... just trying to keep a positive attitude.)

Just wanted to add that I got the hold email this afternoon too.

Even though I know it's not over until the fat lady sings, I'm still bummed... but it makes me feel better that it seems most people have been put in the hold pile for now. If this cycle is like last years, only five people were accepted outright through December (total, per Jane, per last year's Mayo thread). Here's hoping we still have a shot!!

And does anyone know if they do reject people post-interview instead of holding everyone? I thought Jane said on our interview day that about some people were rejected after they were ranked, if they were a bad Mayo fit.

Sorry frick! Guess we just wait now. Anyway, I could swear they said everyone was put on hold--no rejections until March.

I would just like to thank you all for your congratulating me. It really means a lot to have people (especially premeds🙂) who are honestly happy for you.

When I talked to Jane a couple of weeks ago she said that NO one will be rejected until after march 15th or so. As of this time they will send out rejections and make a waitlist of about 60 people. So a hold is NOT a rejection. My student host told me that they accept very few people early on. He was accepted in December (last year) and by that time he said that there was only 5 or 6 other people that had been accepted. Another student I know of (do not personally know) who is a third year at Mayo was not accepted early but in February. So everyone is still very much in the running. I am hoping that all of us SDNers get in. Good luck and be patient.

Thanks for the info brainfry and sc71football! (and brainfry, I'm glad I have someone to wait with that I had on my interview day 😀) I guess I must've been confusing what I had heard from other schools with Mayo about rejections right away (I didn't write anything down when Jane was talking... whoops)

sc71, I'm glad to hear that info from your student host. I also knew that last year many people weren't accepted until after December, but I thought perhaps without the phone interviews and with the multiple MCATs things seemed to be speeding up for Mayo this year, and so I hoped more people would hear back earlier. I guess we'll just have to see how it all pans out...!

I just spoke to Jane, and have some news to share. First off, for those still waiting for an interview invite, invites will go out today for those who were complete on 10/8. I'm in the 10/9 batch, so my decision will probably be made today or tomorrow (with my decision emailed anytime from tonight to Monday night - eeek!). If you were complete after 10/8, you should be able to project when you might hear back - apparently they go through about one day's worth of completed apps at a time, on average. Also, if you're not invited, an email will also go out letting you know. Unlike at other schools, we won't sit there waiting to find out until December. And as for that 1:30am CST email, it's of course automated.

For those who are on hold, keep your chin up. Apparently each of you has been ranked, and each and every month they pick the top apps off the pile with the highest ranking (with the intent to also make up a diverse student body as well). No one is rejected until much later in the season. If you didn't get the acceptance this month, it just means that there were people above you with a higher ranking. Next month, it could be you! Jane said that there tends to be a large number of highly qualified (and highly ranked) applicants early on, so I suppose it may be harder to get that acceptance right off the bat in October. I think she said that they only actually gave out FIVE acceptances after that first meeting. Jane did confirm that a large portion of the class was initially put on hold and then accepted last year. GOOD LUCK! :luck:

mayo blew me away. wow.

i was so nervous in my interview though - did not help that i was thinking about my friends/family in san diego at the time too.

please take me :O

Do you get a complete email? I sent my essays in on Sunday and haven't heard back?

i sent my essays in on september 21st. i was complete on october 5th....and i still haven't heard back from them. i didn't get an email back saying i was complete. i had to call the office. i am thinking that i will get an email tonight....or this week hopefully about interviews.

I do recall others in this thread saying that they got a complete email. But those of us that called didn't. I'm guessing that if you call, you don't get that email. *shrug*

Thanks for the info, Phoenix!! That is great to know - and it's amazing that you went ahead and asked about this stuff! 👍 Now it's just a fine line between being hopeful and getting my hopes up...

Also, good luck with finding out about your interview SOON! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!! :luck:

WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

I think I must still be dreaming! Jane just let me know I'll be getting an invite tonight!!!!! Believe it or not, I dreamed last night that I got a Mayo invite in my inbox, and I woke up at 6:30am to check my email on my phone while I was half asleep. No Mayo email. Sadly, I went back to sleep. I had a funny feeling and checked again on my phone as I was waking up just now, and I had an email from Jane with the AMAZING news!!! I think she felt bad that I said I was waiting up by the computer at 1:30am every night this week to see what the news was. She's SO nice!

To sum up: I must still be dreaming, because I can't BELIEVE I actually got an interview invite to Mayo!!!! I know the chance of getting accepted is next to nil, but I'm so honored that they're even going to consider me for their class. I don't think WOO HOO even remotely conveys my excitement! For those of you that already got the invite/interviewed, how is it scheduled once you get the invite? Do you call? Online? And about how far out is the interview date from when you receive the invite. One month? Two? Any info appreciated! Thanks!! I can't believe I actually get to go read through the SDN interview feedback forum for MAYO now!!!

Congratulations Phoenix! So glad you're finally getting your wish! You schedule your interview online. I'm not sure how far out they are in scheduling interviews, I scheduled mine for like 2 weeks out but could have scheduled it for the same week, but that was back in september. Good luck! PM me if you have any Mayo questions!

Thanks for the info! Guess I'll get to see MN in the full-swing of winter! So long as that doesn't mean a flight cancellation that makes me miss my interview, I'm game! Flying from Chicago to MN in the winter is like testing fate, eh?

And I am SO happy to "officially" be part of this thread with you guys. I have to thank you guys, by the way. A friend of mine had talked me out of applying to Mayo this past Mayo saying that I had NO chance, so I decided I would only apply if I got a 32 or above on the MCAT. When I got a 30 I was really sad and decided I had no shot at Mayo. But I was reading this thread and getting so excited with you guys, that I decided it didn't matter if I had no chance at all, and added Mayo in late September. I know I sound like a cheese ball, but thanks to everyone in this thread for the inspiration!

Congrats Phoenix! :luck:

Congratulations phoenix! I just want to say good luck to all of you here.

Sorry I can't be a part of this thread (rejected pre-sec 🙁).

Congrats phoenix! You will love Mayo, well already sounds like you do. Mayo really looks at the whole person and not just the numbers. The interviews are super laid back and the day is packed with info and things to see. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and see as much as you can because they do NOT have a second look weekend.

Thanks! So, where did you guys stay? Student host, or a hotel? If a hotel, which? And did you guys fly directly to Rochester, or fly to Miinn and take the shuttle?

stayed with a host ... definatley one of my best host experiences ... teh class is really cool!

i flew into Minn and then I rented a car and drove to Mayo ... its actually cheaper than shuttle ... i paid like $40 with the under 25 penalty and everything ... and the directions to mayo are super easy ...

It's not too cold here yet, except at night. I would avoid flying through Chicago if you can, better to fly through MSP or take the shuttle from MSP...depending on how much you like REALLY tiny planes (if you're tall you may want to avoid that flight). There's a good bunch of hotels here...the Marriot and the Kahler are the two attached to Mayo but if you're anywhere downtown you can walk to the clinic or take the subway, otherwise there's shuttles from pretty much everywhere.
