I hope the thread title will do the trick...

So I was working on my VCU secondary:

Essay: I. Please share with us your thoughts on specialties and how you plan to choose yours (limit of 250 words).

I ran into this website: http://www.med-ed.virginia.edu/specialties/

Mine #1 rank came out to be radiology, which was a surprise.

Is it fair to mention in the essay that I will plan on choosing my specialty via an online aptitude test? haha :D

Enjoy.

This same site was linked in the clinical rotations forum. It told me to go into peds, when I was thinking neuro, psych, or emergency medicine.

Ok, what does this say about me? It says urology, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, aerospace med are tied for #1????? I always thought I was a bit less type A than all of that... And family practice/peds were last...

Mine came out with Pathology, Neurology, and Radiology ranks 1,2,and 3. Very close to my own interests. My other interest, Gen IM, was ranked 5. Interesting. Fam practice, peds, and gen surg were last.

Enjoy.

I'd be careful mentioning to VCU that you're choosing a specialty based on a test on UVa's web-site...

It also should be mentioned that I will be preparing for a gratifying career in Astromedicine, per this test's suggestions...

I was actually interested in emergency medicine, but somehow it ended up last on my list.

#1 - Thoracic Surgery and Orthopeadic Surgery
#2 - Plastic Surgery/Ophthalmology

Funny.... thoracic is really my primary interest...

Surgery has always been my #1 :)

8 neurosurgery 44
9 colon & rectal surgery 43
10 thoracic surgery 43

Occupational med (not sure exactly what that is)
Emergency med
derm

Okay, I can tell you derm is definatly out. I've been interested in EM. Now to find out what occupational med is just out of curiosity.

I want to do emergency medicine.

Why is my top choice #17 on my list? My second choice is #2. LOL

1 nephrology 47
2 thoracic surgery 45
3 occupational med 45
4 plastic surgery 45
5 general surgery 44
6 preventive med 44
7 radiation oncology 44

3 neurology 41
4 general surgery 40
5 plastic surgery 39
6 dermatology 39
7 cardiology 38

My number 1 interests finished 5 and 6, respectively. Somewhat accurate, I like the idea....but never in a million years would I go into pathology.

1 physical med & rehabilitation 46
2 dermatology 44
3 rheumatology 43
4 psychiatry 43
5 preventive med 42

Here are my top five. OB/gyn, peds and family med are personal my top three choices and they were ranked 19, 20, 21. I honestly don't know much about these top five fields (so, who knows, maybe they would be the best matches).

 weird results! My first was Plastic Surgery 48...but my interest is in 13.family med (44) and 34.obgyn (40)

...I like watching plastic on tv like 90210, but could never actually do that line of work myself.

oh yea, the test was accurate about my least favorite..emergency med. :barf:

its a cool idea, but i dont understand repeating the same 10 basic questions over and over again

Way to get ahead of ourselves. I'm going to worry about first things first.

my scores were pretty even...

1. Pathology (which I can't say I have an interest it)- 40
2. Neurology- 40
3. opthalmology- 38
4. rheumatology- 38
5. endocrinology- 38

1 nuclear med 46
2 cardiology 46
3 dermatology 45
4 general internal med 43
5 neurosurgery 43
6 radiology 43
7 preventive med 42
8 physical med & rehabilitation 42
9 pulmonology 42
10 infectious disease 42

You could be the next Doug "Nervous Guy" Murphy!

1 plastic surgery 44
2 nuclear med 44
3 ophthalmology 43
4 thoracic surgery 43

Im so scared of surgery...what does this mean??

1. General Surgery!

and so right they are!

Nuclear Medicine - 50!

I'm not surprised by that result, but Pathology in #2 and Thoracic Surgery #3? Hmmmh.

1 psychiatry 46
2 neurology 45
3 rheumatology 44
4 general internal med 44
5 general surgery 44

16 radiation oncology 46
17 aerospace med 45
18 plastic surgery 45
19 radiology 45
20 orthopaedic surgery 45

Now, numbers 16-20 look more like it!

mine surprised me a lot.

1 ophthalmology 47
2 neurology 47
3 endocrinology 46
4 allergy & immunology 46
5 rheumatology 45
6 pathology 44
7 otolaryngology 44
8 plastic surgery 44
9 physical med & rehabilitation 43
10 occupational med 43

eyes freak me out. neurology could be ok i guess. where's my radiology or pediatrics???

1 radiology 50
10 dermatology 50
12 emergency med 49
15 anesthesiology 49
17 radiation oncology 49
24 neurology 49
25 psychiatry 49
29 otolaryngology 48
31 ophthalmology 48

These are the ones that interest me out of the 30 they presented me with. I'm sure a lot of these will be eliminated once I *actually* get to med school and do my rotations ;)

It's fun speculating though!

1 med oncology 43
2 rheumatology 42
3 pediatrics 42
4 psychiatry 41
5 dermatology 41
6 general internal med 40
7 hematology 40
8 physical med & rehabilitation 40
9 radiology 39
10 endocrinology 39

i tend not to be much of a believer in aptitude tests, but this one is pretty much dead on with my top choices. pediatrics and oncology are my personal top 2 but pediatric oncology would be a dream come true.

I agree, my number 1 would be pediatric oncology, after that infectious disease, but nephrology I don't know where that comes from?

J/K I had some choices i never dreamed I would be compatible with either.

This test sucks and is overly repetitive. I bolded my interests.

These questions are silly.
Also, they seem to hold radiologists in high regard. Most radiologists I know don't consider patient care as a 5. Or seeing results from their actions. Or a number of those questions.
Also, if you rank thinking rather than doing as a 5, but then doing rather than thinking as a 5, they should just throw out your quiz.
A few other questions, which specialties are intolerant of others, don't enjoy teaching, and don't want good outcomes?

1. Radiology
2. Gastroenterology

WTF? Are you kidding me? I'm pretty sure I answered those 10 repeat questions differently too. Maybe it's cancer....maybe it's not?

Maybe they just know that the only idiots who would sit there and press the 5 button repetitively are aptly suited for radiology. J/K

This thing was probably someone's design for their thesis research.

Very interesting that dermatology and emergency med are in the top 5, and hematology #1?

Really what is occupational medicine? if it has to do with people getting hurt on the job, i don't want to get into that. heme , nephrology, and radiology sound good....plastic surgery really?? and where is the emergency medicine I've spent all my time doing? (down at the bottom of my list)

Haha Aerospace med, psychiatry and oncology. Three things I'd awfully hate. Tho the ones in the 45s and 46s i could do tho i doubt i'd do pulmonology or nephrology

That reminds me of the time I wanted to refer a gentleman who had a stroke to an occupational therapist for a hand splint. He was adamant that he didn't need the referral since he didn't need a job!

Darn it!

I've taken that test 2x and both times it lists plastic surgery as #1...
I gotta figure out how to rig it just so....because I don't wanna go into plastic surgery - geech! And neurosurgery as #2?? God - I'll be dead by the time I finish residency!!

reconstructive palstic surgery is pretty noble. That picture of the cat-lady with the bad plastic surgery makes me want to steer clear of plastics all together though.

That and all the nasty celebrity boob-jobs.
