This thread is ancient!

But I still took the test.

1. Occ-Med
2. PM&R (I really like this)
3. Rad-Onc
4. Rheumatology
5. Anesthesia

I'm going to go try the SUNY-Buffalo one now and see how it differs.

1. Radiology (surprise!) :p
2. Nephrology (tie)
3. Dermatology (tie)
...
35. Cardiology
36. Family Practice :D

I took the buffalo test, both tests have Radiation Oncology right at (or very near) the top of the list.

It's something that I've always thought was cool, but that I never considered for myself.

Same here. Got rad onc and radiology for my first and second. Never been drawn to it but now I'm like maybe I should be?? Damn test.

1) Peds, actual number - 1
2) Rheumatology, actual number - ????
3) Dermatology, actual number - No. Just no.
...
Last) General surgery, actual number - ...last.

Damn test making me question my commitment to looking down on dermatologists.

Here's my top 10

1 general surgery 43
2 occupational med 43
3 nuclear med 43
4 pulmonology 43
5 infectious disease 43
6 emergency med 43
7 dermatology 42
8 anesthesiology 42
9 radiation oncology 42
10 neurosurgery 42

Never even thought of neurosurgery. Emergency is where I want to be, which is a 6 way tie for first so I guess that's good. Never thought much of being a surgeon in general. Of the top 10 I would most like 6, 7, 8, 9.

haha we took that for one of our career planning exercises earlier in year 1...my highest score was Ortho.....which is hilarious considering I am 5'4 and weight 120 lb....a person's leg that I could be setting could way more than me. lulzzz

here is my suggested specialties list:

My interests are: 1, 9, 13, 14, 15, 23, 25, and 32.

1. allergy & immunology:
2. radiology:  I like people!
3. pediatrics:  I like ADULT people.
4. pathology: Not for me.
5. neurology: :scared: Brains freak me out.
6. physical med & rehabilitation:
7. dermatology: I don't see myself treating acne and removing moles for the rest of my life.
8. endocrinology:
9. general internal med:
10. psychiatry: Not for me.

Second attempt:

1. radiology
2. pathology
3. gastroenterology: Hmm, this one may be worth looking into.
4. dermatology
5. allergy & immunology
6. endocrinology
7. pediatrics
8. general internal med
9. nuclear med:
10. neurology

Then again, who knows how I'll feel about these in a few years?

FYI, there is a lot of room in rads to work directly with patients. I know of a PP where there are rads that never see a patient and some where they never reads studies. These two options don't sit well with me since I want to read studies but also want patient contact. I shadowed one their physicians and he did about 50/50 - 60/40 studies/procedures. His workday was EXACTLY what I was looking for (we even joked that by the time I finished residency he would be ready to retire and I could take is spot in the group :D).

My point, is that radiologists need not sit in a dark room all day never to talk to real people. :)

^ Good to know. Thanks!

Family Medicine was last on my list, narrowly losing to Colon and Rectal Surgery! lulz

Why all the derm hate? Derm is not all cosmetics. Many derms, I'd say the majority, have the majority of their practice dedicated towards medical derm.

Anecdote: There is this one dermatologist that I know who actually accepts all sorts of insurance and he treats crazy skin diseases all the time. Compared to other dermatologists in the area, he is making less, sure, but he really does love his job and he's happy.

Wound up matching in my #1 at a top program. Turns out the little test was right after all. Funny to see this 5 years after the fact.

but did you have any interest in derm or the others?

Am I the only person who thinks this test is a steaming pile?

Haha I'm leaning towards that.

I legitimately feel negatively to the prospect of being stuck doing any of the first 5 things in my list, which also seem loosely connected at best to me (pathology, dermatology, neurology, neurosurgery, gastro)

1 occupational med 49
2 emergency med 49

36 psychiatry 35

my interests are bolded. funny thing is, ignoring all other specialties, this is actually the order in which I have ranked them

Usually don't post in threads like this b/c nobody cares or should care but the test (buffalo) was pretty accurate so why not. Nailed RadOnc as my top choice. Thought cardio would be higher ranked. Lots of surgery even though I've never really considered surgery...hmm.

Radiation Oncology
Gastroenterology
Emergency Medicine
Otolaryngology
Sports Medicine
Orthopaedic Surgery
Urology
Neonatal - Perinatal Medicine
Neurological Suregery
Plastic Surgery
Cardiology

8 physical med & rehabilitation 40
9 radiology 39
10 endocrinology 39

i tend not to be much of a believer in aptitude tests, but this one is pretty much dead on with my top choices. pediatrics and oncology are my personal top 2 but pediatric oncology would be a dream come true.
i've recently been pretty interested in those myself!!! my top was physical med and rehab though... oncology was 35th and peds was 23rd for me though...

Mine was pretty similar! Except PM&R was first, then peds and then psych with the same score values as you.

I wasn't even looking into PM&R but peds and psych are my top picks :D

I assume the questions were repeated to get more truthful answers....since you won't remember your response to the same question earlier.
