Michigan State c/o 2020 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this is kind of a silly question... But how much information are you all putting in the getting to know you section for the interview?

I put my pets names/species. How many aiblings I had and that I was the middle. Debating putting professional goals in. Debating puting my degree in because I don't have it now but will in December...

I kept it all fairly brief. I listed my major hobbies, interests, and my pets (name and species). Hope that helps. 😀

Thanks! I don't know that I really want to put professional goals in... And I won't have a degree if I get in this cycle, so I was feeling like it would be rather scanty. That makes me feel better to know that people are filling in the other spaces and not just the more "academic" ones.

I interpreted it as information that would only be used if accepted so I put "Bachelor of Science, Biology, (School), 2016", because I'll have my degree by the time the information would be published.

It's up to you. The whole point of the Getting to Know You section is for your fellow potential classmates to find out a little about you once your accepted. It's doesn't reflect negatively on your application if you only fill out the required fields.

For some reason, I can't quote, MammothSpartan, but no, it doesn't matter which day you select, so pick whichever one works best for you.

Felixor90, did you say you were giving tours on Dec. 11th? I take it you will be at the meet and greet? What do you think we should wear to that? I was going to save my suit for the interview.
Yes I'll be at the meet and greet. I did a similar thing last year (meet and greet the night before the interview) at a few of my interviews and almost everyone wore casual clothes. Genes and a nice sweater/shirt should be fine.

Could you do a quick itinerary for the meet and greet? Thanks!

Well, I'm gonna go outside and take a picture today, then I'll be submitting my interview application. Would've done it quicker but it's been such a busy week with the holiday. *sigh*

I probably already asked this but who else scheduled for the January 8th AM slot?

I just tool my photo today, too. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't have time sooner! I'm in the PM on the 12th of Dec. But with any luck, we'll all be meeting each other in the fall!

I might be the only one, but for my "getting to know you" section I put a bit of humor into it. I'm getting to the point in the semester where I cant be this serious all the time! I feel like I am catapulting into finals week and before I know it I will be at MSU CVM for interviews!

That's when I'll be there too. My name is Shauna... Shhhh! Haha

Ughhh feeling sick with all the anxiety! I wish they would just ease my pain and send invites all out at once instead of in waves.

Congrats to everyone who got invites though!

I'll be at that interview slot 🙂

Anyone else get a call from Michigan today? Voicemail just says to call back, but I got no answer.

Just got offered an interview for the 12th! She told me if I can't make it, I can go in February, but I have to let them know my plan by the end of the day.

Nice! Do you think they had some openings during that day and wanted to offer you an interview for that position?

I wonder if they'll drop interview invites for February soon, then.

When the application for the MMIs closed on Friday, there were still 4 open spots for interviews. Congrats on getting one of those!

They told me there were 2 when I was called. Thank you! 🙂

They said if I can't go now I'll be put on the list for Feb, which goes out in January, so it won't be for awhile.

Does anyone have any resources to prepare for this other than SDN that they would like to share? I have no idea how to prepare for an MMI....

Honestly, there's not too much prep to do. I interviewed last year (the first year they did these) and I was super worried about preparing too but once I actually did them I realized I was panicking for no reason. The best thing you can do is make sure you are confident talking to people in interview situations--practice time management, transitions, eye contact etc. Definitely make sure you are familiar with the format too. It's really different from other kinds of interviews so check them out on MSUs CVM page if you haven't already. I actually liked the MMIs because it's not something you can force or fake. The questions aren't related to your outside knowledge of vet med, or even your own experiences. Every applicant gets the same question and the same amount of time to discuss it. One thing I did was I went to a session about MMIs last year before my interview and they gave us a list of practice questions but I don't think they're doing that this year. The questions were completely varied and may or may not have to do with school or animals. It's impossible to say what kind of questions they will ask. If you're really nervous, find a friend/family member and just talk about a subject, any subject, in a professional manner while timing yourself. Also don't forget that a strong handshake is very important for first impressions!

Thank you for the advice! I'm taking public speaking this semester, so hopefully that has helped me with this kind of thing.

One more question for everyone, anyone know when decisions come? Waves like interviews? or all at once?

I just woke up to a find a missed call from them as well, guess I need to hurry up and call them back

Yay, you're probably the second one as well! 🙂
Just called, I guess there's still 2 spots left. I was assuming the interview was for January 12th, its for December 12th though and I'm not able to make that date. This was a good way to find out if get an interview later on though 🙂

Congrats!! Yeah my offer was for Dec 12th too. I think I'm gonna do it. I'm too excited to wait.

does your school have a career center? They may have mock interviews available and may even be able to help with MMI

I feel so far behind you guys, so I'm gonna be really awkward here and post the pic I'm considering for my photo... thoughts? Had to be cropped to be professional haha..

I asked a friend who applied last year, and the pre-health counselor sent her a video for help with MMI's (which she sent me). Gotta watch it after class!

I posted this earlier to give you everyone a rough idea of what to look forward to: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...2020-applicants.1143518/page-10#post-17135214

To be honest though, there isn't much you really need to do to prepare. Since you're already taking a class on public speaking, you should be all set. Just be as confident as possible and don't worry to much if you don't know the answer to something. You'll be in multiple scenarios, to even if you feel you didn't do the greatest on one, it won't ruin anything. Just be yourself, work through whatever they give you, and try and have fun. The most common response from everyone on here after taking the MMI is how relieved it was to be done and how they ended up having fun and meeting a bunch of people.

That should be fine. As long as it's professional in nature and big enough to them to recognize it's you, then go for it.

One more question for everyone, anyone know when decisions come? Waves like interviews? or all at once?

Last year it was in waves. They let some of the top applicants know before interviews were done but they waited until really late after the interviews were finished to let everyone know. I got my rejection email mid/late March last year along with a bunch of my friends. Last year the MMIs were new and they seemed to be pretty disorganized. They've always done waves though so they probably wont change that--at least that's my guess! So probably waves, but who knows when we'll hear? If anyone knows for sure feel free to step in 🙂

No, I'm in the Green group. Anyone else?

Did you guys just get emailed itineraries? So exciting! I might have to wait a few more weeks if they haven't gotten the Jan 08 group organized yet.

Hey guys,
I found this from the pre-health conference at UCD (GO AGS!). I hope this is helpful in understanding what MMIs want to establish. There is also a great Q and A sessions on an example scenario at the end.

Haha I'm in the PM on the 12th, but I haven't finished my getting to know you section yet, so I'll probably not know what group quite yet.

Looks like I'm the only red group so far! So this meet and greet is new...is anyone planning on bringing family or anything? My parents are interested but I don't want them to cramp my style if they're the only ones there 😛

My mom is going to campus with me, but I'm not sure if I should bring her to the meet & greet, haha.
