Midwestern, Glendale 2012 class

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Finally, I had trouble walking at the end of the day. The reason is I'm married to sneakers. Be sure to wear comfortable and, at the same time, professional shoes. You'll be touring around the campus for about an hour.

I'm married to sneakers too and I learned the shoe lesson the hard way. I bought a new pair yesterday and walked around the store with them on for 10 minutes to make sure nothing started to hurt and no blisters began forming. 🙂

assuming you guys are ladies?

walking in heels does look really painful to me lol.

I'm like that too. I tried on some short heels and walked around the store. It felt fine so I bought them for the interviews. Nevertheless, I died when we walked around MWU b/c my pinky toes got smushed.

Pro-tip: bring bandaids when wearing heels.

I'm a guy too. I should have clarified. Dress shoes show no mercy regardless of gender. They are equal opportunity blister givers.

Anyone with new interview invites?
Let's bring up the activity level for MWU-CPG!

Has everyone that interviewed two weeks ago heard back on their acceptance and so on??

Yes, I'm local. I live 9 minutes from campus. <added bonus>

Nelcovp, if someone asked you what there is to do around campus, what would you say? Especially since you live closer than I do. We came up with some suggestions upthread a number of pages, but maybe you can give less boring suggestions than I did. 😛

For everyone that has already interviewed, I have a couple questions as my date nears,

1. Should I bring anything like a pencil/pen, etc.
2. was your answer for "why midwestern" long or short and sweet, because i dont want to say too much!

1. Should I bring anything like a pencil/pen, etc.

For mine, I'm glad I did. But later interview dates didn't need one. YMMV

There's water in the fridge.

2. was your answer for "why midwestern" long or short and sweet, because i dont want to say too much!

Honestly, just feel out the interviewers. The other interviewees will help set the pace. 2 of us were long-winded, so most of the answers tended to be longer. On the up side, fewer questions; on the down side, you could get caught with a question you can't elaborate on. Watch the interviewers' body language - I cut myself short once when I saw them start looking a little disconnected, but I really tend to give long long answers. (Gee, couldn't tell from my posts, could ya?)

You'll probably get a good feel for the pace with the first question or two, so I wouldn't sweat it. Even if you feel strongly you want give a longer answer than the other interviewees, go for it. Just stick to the meat & avoid filler. A good general idea for any interview answer you're thinking about is to boil it down to a few talking points. That way you can scale it up or down as needed, twist it a bit to fit the question, and you don't sound too practiced.

I brought a pad-folio (had to look it up to see what its actually called) and thought it would make me look more professional. Turned out just made a hot day more annoying to have to carry around something in my hand. I would just carry a pen in my pocket just in case.

Did not get asked that question, wrote it on my essay part instead.

I didn't bring a writing utensil because it was provided for us. My answer for the why Midwestern question was kind of long. I did some research on the school beforehand and wanted to show them I was serious about their program.

Just bring a pencil, something with an eraser is nice for the short essay that you will have to write before you leave for the day. As for the "why midwestern" part, my group wasn't asked that question, nor was it workable into the essay for our group. As it has been said a couple posts up, work on those key points, but do not rehearse. It is a turn off to schools if you sound like a robot. :meanie:

protip:

you CAN pause if you need time to gather your thoughts when you respond to an interview question!

Dont just start talking and structure your sentence &/or thoughts as you go. Some may be good at it some may be not.

I would say Midwestern is one of the most relaxing interview I've been to. Touro interview was terrible lol.

Wait, we have to write an essay, i thought it was just interview, tour and lunch?

Thank you everyone for your input, I guess my nerves are starting to hit me now haha

You get a folder when you show up, inside is a paper that asks you to write "in close proximity", a 100 word response to a question. No big deal, but show up early and get to know some people, that way you feel more at ease.

make sure to only answer ONE question.
Not sure why people get confused. I usually dont read directions but I noticed that haha 👍

Yeah, a golf pencil. 😛

I don't remember whether I was asked it directly or not (my notes are at home). I know I worked it into one of the answers, if I wasn't. Remember, the questions they're trying to answer are "why should we pick you?" and "how good a' fit are you for our program?"

Aww, someone spilled the beans. It was the last surprise. Anyway, apparently, at least one interview date has not had to write an essay. You pretty much get to pick the topic. Don't worry about it. It's nice to have the eraser, if you can bring a mechanical pencil or something.

I would have thought staying home with a good book (medicinal chemistry) would be a good enough time. 😀Did you mention hockey, football, and mechanical bulls at Westgate? Lake Pleasant isn't too far off. Weekend trips to Sedona, Flagstaff, or the Canyon if you need a change of scenery. You could even do day trips to Prescott or Jerome. Jerome has an art walk called 2nd Saturday I think. There's a pretty cool zoo on the west side. I think there is a bowling alley at 59th ave and bell. If you want the true college scene, head to Mill Ave in Tempe. Take a cab, mandatory 10 days in jail for first offense DWI in AZ. That is something you don't want to chance with a glass of wine over dinner. ummmmm...... maybe this will be an interview question.

Lets go sledding at Flagstaff next winter if we all decide to go to MWU. 😛

I asked the question before but I guess the side conversation covered it up.

We have block schedules for final exams (quarterly exams), do we have midterms? Or is it small weekly tests? I was reading some older threads saying MWU-CPG program is rigorous and have weekly tests, so just wanted to make sure it's still that way and not 1 midterm, 1 final per class.

🙂

One student told me he practically has tests every week and it really keeps him on his toes. I don't think it's 1 midterm, 1 final. That would be UOP, right? 😕 I hope I'm not getting my pharm schools mixed up...

LOTS OF TESTS.....Not a midterm/final format....the program is scheduled so there re always tests, and professors know what others are doing so they know when to poor it on, and when to relax.....SO I hear...

I'm actually not stressing about how many tests...I just wanted to make sure what style the lectures are being instructed and tested.

Good thing about this schedule is: our grades are not dependent on 2 exams so easier to bounce back and redeem

Sounds like fun. 😀

I like to downhill ski - maybe we could get a ski trip together.

ummmmm...... maybe this will be an interview question.

 No, the out of town folks have been asking. I don't think Westgate got a mention at all, and certainly not the mechanical bulls.

There is a block weekly schedule up on the website, as well as the semester schedule. On the block schedule, it has time scheduled for tests. On the semester schedule, there are dates listed for finals. It's available under the Academic Calendar link on MWUNet, or I think I linked directly to the page a while back.

Anyone who had an interview on the 4th hear any early news yet? 🙂

When did you interview Spunky ? I was part of the October interviews and we didn't write essays, but I don't know if that was an abberation or they dropped them.😕

I interviewed in Nov and we also had an essay.

REMAIN CALM : ALL WILL BE WELL😀

Seriously, it is as laided back as an interview to a professional school could get.

Good luck !

Midwestern finally received my PCAT scores and now my application is complete. Now to wait for an interview. Gah, I hope I get one!:xf:

EDITED

Okay, ate lunch to put some sugar into my blood stream and read the block schedule again. So The schedule shows Tuesday and Thursday have exams from 8:00-10:50AM. And then lecturing schedules structure around that. I'm assuming the schedules will either be like this or alternative any two days within the week.

Alright, 2 exams a week, must buy lots of snacks from Costco to fuel the brain!

Did the email you that they received your scores? I found out they got it by looking at the application checklist on my supplemental application.

I think Monday will be a good day to shoot for. Most of us waited a week or so...except two very special individuals 😀

Congrats. Is this one of your top choices? Seeing you are from Arizona.
The interview is a very relaxing process.

It is, I only applied to two schools so I guess it's in my top two :meanie:

Thanks for the encouragement, It's good to know it's as laid back as an interview can be under the circumstances. Any general topics I should expect for the writing portion?

Hey, anyone else interviewing on Friday the eleventh? Thought it was kind of strange to have interviews on a national holiday; assuming classes are not going to be held this day either which could make for a unique day compared to others for interviewees.

Just got the email to fill out the supplemental application. Hopefully I can finish it tonight. And hear back from them about an interview soon. 🙂

Is the other one University of Arizona BTW? 😀

I can't remember the exact question but it was something along the lines of "what have you done to prepare yourself for pharmacy school?"
