MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@Unwritten8415 @cramerb83 Thank you for your insights and advice regarding international careers and practicum work. I'll definitely ask global health students about them during school visits!

@doctorjonesofhampton Congrats, that is an AMAZING funding package! If I were going for an interdisciplinary approach to public health within the US, I certainly would lean heavily toward WashU.

@keeks23 And congrats to you on that Emory scholarship! Looking forwards to continuing the PhD convo on a new thread!

@jes3dz Yes, looking forwards to chatting this weekend!

Also, I'm beginning to realize that I'm a lousy millennial... Does anyone know how to start a new thread? I can't find the button anywhere.

I went ahead and made a thread (hope I didn't jump the gun while you were composing a post or anything, lol). The button is in the upper right side of the page when viewing the forum!

Huh... I must have permission to post then :whoa: Could you please post the link here? And thanks!

Did anyone apply to USC’s MPH? I applied back in December and haven’t heard anything about decisions...

I did! Have yet to hear anything besides the email stating my application was under review.

Isn’t that kinda ridiculous? I’m really frustrated. I sent an email to Valerie(the contact from the email that said that my app was received) and haven’t gotten a reply for a month. Also, calling them had been super hard. They have multiple hoops and different voice prompts

I applied and received the same email and Valerie literally sent my application for review after like 3 weeks of me emailing her constantly and her not replying. It is ridiculous! I just want to know already...

I feel solace in that it wasn’t just me! Well, hopefully we hear soon!

in at berkeley!! 😍 ahh i know the wait for acceptances is excruciating (anxiety was starting to kick in for me), but i hope you all are also taking some time to enjoy and celebrate this time in your lives! we've all come so far and are so lucky to be in a place to pursue our goals of making the world a better place. just remember not to get down/doubtful about yourself or your worth because any school would be lucky to have a person such as yourself~ if you're still waiting, hang in there!!

Has anyone heard from Harvard Epi SM-42.5, Vanderbilt Epi MPH, Yale MS CDE, and UNC Applied Epi?? I’m really frustrated and wanna finalize my decision ASAP!
haven't heard from Vandy & submitted/verified a week before their january deadline!

Congrats! I am still waiting to hear from Berkeley, for Epi, ugh I think I might have to wait another month--since I verified late January.

Honestly, I've checked my email and this feed at least 2x a day for the last three weeks because of Cal. Interested to see how it all rolls out. Did you apply for Epi?

I applied for HSB. If you’re only checking 2x a day you’re handling this wait way better than I am haha. I refresh way too many times an hour. Might enroll in midday yoga to calm the nerves if I don’t hear back tomorrow lolol.

Lol I just graduated from there for undergrad. They released decisions for PhDs in epi earlier this month so I’m assuming masters is coming soon! They are really busy in general but you got this!

Accepted to the MSPH in International Health at Hopkins!

Hopkins seemed to really take a holistic approach to reviewing applications, as I was even contacted by the school to discuss my application when they weren't sure I was a good fit. As you can see by my record, my quantitative experiences / scores are severely lacking to say the least. For this reason (I believe), I've been outright rejected from a few programs despite meaningful international experience elsewhere. I could really tell that JHU gave me a fighting chance based on my whole application and let strengths in certain areas make up for me BIG TIME lacking qualitative skills, which are obviously important. I'm really stoked!

Applied November 27th, Accepted February 19th

Wow. That’s really nice to hear. Congratulations! 🙂

Has anyone NOT heard back from Columbia yet? It's for accelerated MPH (General).

That's amazing! Congratulations 🙂 Is this a 1yr or a 2 yr program?

The MSPH program there is 2 years, all/most coursework built into the 1st year using a quarter system instead of semesters to really pack in the classes....the second year focused on your practicum, capstone, and any requirements you have left. Apparently many finish it in 18 months ish

Hey everyone- I have applied to the following schools:
-Tulane (accepted)
-Boston University (accepted)
-Colorado State University (accepted)
-Oregon State University (accepted)
-UC Berk
-UNC Chapel Hill (accepted)
-Harvard

I am from the Northeast, now living in Boston. I am going to have a big decision to make in terms of choosing an MPH program. Part of me wants to stay in Boston (and go to BU or Harvard (if accepted)) because I have my network here, job, friends, close to home, etc. and Boston is an incredible hub for public health. On the other hand, I really am attracted to the idea of going out to Oregon because of geography, trying something new, etc. Just wondering- anyone who has gone through your MPH program (if at any of these places, thats a bonus!), could you give me some insight as to how important it is to go to a "ranked" program? What are your opinions on staying vs. leaving? Pros/cons?

Thanks in advance!

In at Columbia for Epidemiology MS program! But I'm not gonna think about them for a second! Almost $100k for an MS, without any financial offers! :nono: I really cannot understand how more than 1000 students decide to attend there--particularly for those who already do not live in NY and do not receive any financial offers!

Maybe they expect you to find your own funding? Wisconsin expected us to reach out to different programs/labs/etc to find funding and everyone in my cohort was about to secure funding before we started in the fall.

For those who got accepted at UMich for HBHE, has anyone received any financial aid notices? I was checking my portal and noticed they gave me work study and basically just the unsub fed loan for the rest of the cost, but I never received an actual award notice so I am not sure if that's the official summary?

I wholly agree with this! I have a pretty nontraditional background (undergrad in hard sciences with an ok-not-great GPA from a state school, two years teaching public school, and two years RA in medicine), but got accepted into two programs at JHU: Mental Health and Health, Behavior, & Society. I'm sure my application isn't competitive if you go by the numbers alone, but my personal statement really explains my background and future direction in public health. There's no way I would've gotten in if someone at JHU hadn't really taken the time to read and consider it.

Congrats on your acceptance! Hope to see you in the Fall!

Unfortunately, It seems that they are looking for rich kids! I emailed their finiancial aids office, and department coordinator, there were no significant help! An MS would cost more than 150k including tuition, fees, and CoL! Probably, it takes 3 years to return your investment!

Does anybody know whether Vanderbilt will notify scholarships simultaneously with admission letter or we should wait again? Their result would release before 28th Feb.
I’m eagerly looking forward to hearing from Icahn and Vandy as my last hopes for scholarships...

Anyone still waiting on Hopkins MPH? Do you know around when they would release the next batch of decisions?

Thanks!

Me.
They said it takes 8-10 weeks from when your app is officially sent for review. Calculate your timeline accordingly.

anyone else apply for the zuckerman fellowship?
After receiving their acceptance letter, I filled an application for assistantships and scholarships 2-3 weeks ago, nothing heard from them. What about you?

I have a friend who went this route~ she'll be graduating with 100k+ in loans and she said that she went to one of their fin aid workshops and their suggestion on paying back loans was to "move home after grad school" RIP lol

Congrats! I am still waiting to hear from Berkeley, for Epi, ugh I think I might have to wait another month--since I verified late January.
hmm... their admitted students day is coming up March 18th, my guess would be that they'd roll out admissions soon so people can make travel arrangements beforehand. hopefully it's not too much longer!

yoga definitely helps! i enrolled in a membership at a studio for this reason 😛

I’ve received an email from UCLA about a fellowship for Epi MS! I’m completely confused because of my excitement!! I appreciate if somebody elaborates on this text:

"On behalf of the Department of Epidemiology at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, it is my pleasure to offer you the 2019-2020 Fellowship in Epidemiology. The Fellowship provides support for standard tuition, student services fees, and health insurance for the 2019-20 Academic Year. Current tuition rates, including health insurance, set the fellowship's current value at $16,927.81. Should tuition, fees or insurance increase within the award period, the value of the Fellowship will adjust accordingly."

What does it mean? one time 16k, or 16k per semester which means full tuition waiver?!!

SOS my friends! About the quoted Fellowship, I asked them that as I’m an international student, should I pay the Nonresident supplemental tuition? And here is their answer:

”The Department’s fellowship provides support for standard tuition, fees and health insurance for the first year. Nonresident Supplemental Tuition is not included. It may be possible to secure an undergraduate teaching position in the first year which provides fee remissions benefits. In this case, the Department can consider a request to transfer the fellowship to cover NRST in the term of the appointment.”

I don’t understand the exact meaning of the last sentence. I will appreciate if you translate this for me 🙂 Does it mean that if I obtain a TA position for undergrads, the NSRT will be waived? Or decreased? Or...?
