Where did you see that UCLA's program is more admin focused? I've been trying to figure that out...
I'm not 100% sure that the program is more admin focused. I looked up recent graduates on linkedin and saw that a lot of them were hired to hospitals post gradations. There were a lot of graduates working for Kaiser and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and I saw that a lot of internships happened at those places as well.

It should be noted that my linkedin stalking is probably not a great representation of the program focus, just a trend I noticed. If anyone else has more insight on UCLA's HPM program, please jump in!

Has anyone heard from Johns Hopkins for the 11 month MPH in health policy and management? I was sent for review 12/21.

Congratulations on your acceptance!

I am unsure about the standards for merit scholarships, as I didn't receive one. I did receive a need-based scholarship of around 10k/year, so that is also an option available to students if your GRE/GPA doesn't meet the benchmark for merit-based.

I think overall my experience was positive! There were a few gripes with administrative processes and the course load could be challenging at times, but I think I was prepared for a career in public health once I graduated, and I did find a job/started working right after graduating. I am very interested in research as a career, and was able to connect with Columbia professors working on projects I found interesting and was able to RA with one of them. I highly recommend doing that if you are interested in research as I was a) paid, b) did my practicum with them (also paid), and c) got great guidance on my thesis.

It's a big program with around 400 people getting an MPH degree, which can feel large, but it was still easy to make friends as most of your classes are smaller and there's a lot of student groups and activities. For the first semester (the CORE) they assign you to a cohort (around 100 people from all the different departments) and then from that cohort you're further broken into study groups of ~20 students. I found my group to be very kind, smart, and passionate about public health. We were a diverse group and I think we learned a lot from each other. Also, living in NYC is really fun, albeit expensive (but I wouldn't say any more expensive than any other large city in the US).

Not sure what else to write now, but please let me know if you have more specific questions or if I didn't touch on something you were curious about.

You're welcome and good luck!
Thank you so much! That's really helpful!

I am an international student but I have been living and studying in the US for 6 years. I have visited Columbia University when I was in high school, it's a beautiful campus - can't believe my dream eventually came true!!!

I like how they designed the CORE and I think it is important to work with health professionals in other fields of public health. Also, I was actually going to ask you about the research opportunities. I'm really interested in research as a career - I'm also an undergrad researcher at my current school. That's a triple-win for you! Congratulations!!

I'm still waiting for Yale EPI in Microbial Diseases, but I think I've made my mind to attend Columbia! Loved NYC when I visited there!

Thank you again!

Just so you are aware - the Public Health school is on Columbia's Medical campus which is...well...not as beautiful as the main campus. It's about 50 blocks North in the Washington Heights neighborhood. The campus feels more like a hospital, but I loved the Washington Heights area and appreciated being on a campus that was exclusively graduate/professional students. You still have access to all the libraries and most of the student services on the main campus as well, and can go down there to study if you need a change in scenery.

Good luck and congrats again!

Hi all! Has anybody been rejected from a Columbia MPH program yet? I applied later in the cycle, haven't heard back, and am getting a little nervous.

Is anyone else still waiting to hear back from BU? I sent in my supplemental application on Nov 14 and received an email on Dec 23 saying that it was complete and going for review.. going for Global Health Program Design Monitoring, and Evaluation
Yes, I’m still waiting as well! I applied to their health communication and promotion track and submitted my application Jan 8.

Does anyone know a bit more about the REAL program at Rollins? I know that about 50% of applicants are offered this “award”, but I’m wondering what the overall experience is/was for participants. Seems like a really cool opportunity to engage employers like the CDC.

Hey sorry I don't have an answer but are those positions offered in the admission letter or once you have enrolled and are on campus?

Based on previous threads and their website, applicants are notified mid-late Spring. REAL seems to be offered on a FCFS basis, meaning the sooner you submitted your FAFSA the higher your chances are of receiving it. You should be able to view the offer on OPUS once uploaded.

Does anyone know how to embed polls? we all could use it as a tool, update/vote for schools as decisions come in so it's easy to track timelines decrease anxiety. I feel like that's a main recurring question

just got my financial aid package from Columbia
Me too.. I legitimately laughed out loud.. So disappointing- as much as I love the school, this takes it out of the running for me- even with their "scholarships based on need etc" just tuition and fees (not including living expenses) for one year is more expensive than paying full price at UNC for both years..

Hey there. Not asking for specifics but how generous were they compared to say, Yale (if you applied there)? Sorry if it’s in your signature; my mobile doesn’t let anyone’s including my signature show!

did they give merit and need based scholarships at the same time?

Did you get an email or did you check the portal?

Waiting for Columbia accelerated mph, HSPH mph 45, UC Berkeley Interdisciplinary. Haven't received any news whatsoever in the past 2 weeks. Getting nervous.
same! Which programs did you apply for in Columbia and HSPH? Epidemiology?

yale gave me more $$ than columbia

I am pretty sure that it is everything because they said that it was my "total award" and it listed my "total cost of attendance for the 2020-2021 academic year"

All are Epi + Biostats concentration . HSPH is Quantitative Methods and Columbia - General Public Health ( would choose conc after getting in )

did columbia financial aid packages appear on the admitted student portal, or in the financial aid website listed on the portal?

Is anyone still waiting to hear back from Columbia? Applied for HPM
Yes. Think there may have been 1 or 2 people accepted to the HPM program, but by and large most haven't heard anything. What's unexpected is that most of the interviews were conducted a while back, and you'd think they've had an adequate amount of time. Perhaps the certificates are complicating matters.

My portal update showed up about 20 min after the email-- good luck!

were you easily able to login to the student viewer fin aid account or was it just plain in your portal? I just contacted financial aid but it seems like my CUID/password isn’t activated

I had issues on safari but was able to access it using chrome...

What is the financial aid labelled as on the awards tab for Columbia? I have one section that says "resources" and has "student contribution" listed under it with an amount, but I'm not sure if that's the financial aid I was given?
Mine was labeled under "Resources" as "Need FPH" and "Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans"- and then there is a big gap between that number and the actual cost of attendance which I guess they assume comes from personal contribution and Fed PLUS loans.. unfortunately getting approved for fed unsubsidized loans is considered part of the financial aid package and from what I heard from current students at Columbia when I toured is the majority of what the schools gives for financial aid (approval for unsub loans) and they expect you to pay for the rest with plus loans

lol i was SHOCKED
How can you tell you got money? If I got an update email but no email that mentions an award amount can I just assume they didn't offer me any money? (My "budget" on the financial aid site lists my need at $65,000 after a $4,100 student contribution.)

Was the email you got named " See What's New in your Admitted Student Portal" or was it different? I'm having trouble locating any fin aid information on the portal or the student viewer site

I received that email and another from sphfinaid "2020-2021 Financial Aid Offer Letter" - they may not be releasing all decisions today? but I also found their websites not very straight-forward.. Good luck!!

Any international student got any scholarship offer from Columbia? 🙁 or do they even offer scholarships to international students?
