MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone heard anything about financial aid/scholarships from the JHU MPH program. I go the log-in to the JHU financial aid portal but it doesn't seem to say anything on there about financial aid I have/ have not received.
I still can't log in.

Does anyone have any advice on asking for more money from schools? I know a lot of us have mentioned wanting to do it, but I'm not exactly sure how to go about it.

Is it more advantageous to wait until you've attended an admitted students event so you can use that to your advantage when asking, i.e. "I talked to specific faculty or students and they really pushed me towards this program in particular, I would love to attend if you could offer me xyz." ?

I would also like to know this information, as my top choice is one that I currently cannot justify financially 😢
Also, is it wise to ask for more money from public schools? I feel like public schools might have their hands tied, right? Not really sure how this goes I've never leveraged an offer before and I regret not trying to do that for undergrad admissions.

Anyone else who got accepted to Yale on 1/30 still waiting for financial aid information? Am I kidding myself to think that scholarships could still be coming even if it's been 10 business days?

I called a few days ago and they said they do stick to that 10 day timeline and that if I was awarded one, I would have been notified. You could always call Monday to see if you did get one, but they at least told me I would have already heard if I was awarded one.

Does anyone remember about how long after your acceptance to GW you received your financial aid package?
Mine came a week later. However, the acceptance letter mentioned that one has to wait for up to 14 business days for them to send out the package. Good luck!

Pseudo-admissions question for the long weekend - any best laptop/iPad recommendations for being an MPH student? Def need to upgrade from a 7 year old Macbook, but wasn’t sure if an iPad Pro situation works or there’s more serious software that requires a computer? I’ll be in a Socio-medical/health behavior tract, but also need to take core curriculums..

I’m not sure what the exact requirements for most statistical software packages are, but I know that SPSS demands quite a lot, and I dont think it runs on an iPad.
You would probably be able to get through your MPH without it, by using excel on your iPad and SPSS or one of those in the library when needed.

Long story short, I think it depends mainly on what you want to have at hand at home without the need to run to a library or such. And I think it’ll be difficult to graduate from an MPH without ever using any statistical software package

Does anyone have any opinions about NYU vs Tulane? Anyone considering either place? I’m torn between those two and BU.

NYU is my top choice right now! But I’ve wanted to attend school there since high school so I may be a little biased. What concentration are you and will you be able to attend admitted student’s day? I can post my thoughts about it afterwards if you’re not able to attend!

So as of yesterday, my application for Columbia has been in review for about 3 months. I can't believe I still haven't heard back. Has anyone else experienced this? It has also been a month since I submitted my BU application and I have heard nothing back yet. I am just surprised I have heard nothing considering I have seen many other people on this forum receive acceptances and scholarships. 🙁

So nice to hear from somebody else considering NYU! My concentration is Community Health Science and Practice. I don’t think I’ll be able to attend the accepted students day (do you know when that is, by the way?), so I’d love to hear your thoughts afterwards! Feel free to DM me so we don’t spam the thread. Lol

I’m in the same boat with Columbia! Three months for me too, not feeling very optimistic at this point. I still don’t understand why schools would hold on to rejections if that’s the case, quite annoying actually.

Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to add another recommender after you have submitted your application? I have the 3 required, but I may want to add another one after I e-submit.

Update: For any future readers, yes, you can add additional recommenders even after you submit your application.

I re-requested one of the letter writers after submitting, so I think it’s a capability at least. However, I think schools get your package once you hit the minimum letters so not sure how that works for getting changes to the application

Hey everyone! If you're like me and not entirely sure what sort of work you'd be interested in doing, I found a useful resource here: https://web1.sph.emory.edu/GlobalFieldExp/GFE-Web/index.php

It's a list of overseas projects by concentration. Everything from maternal to economics to epidemiology. If you click on a name, it pulls up a mini-description of their project. I'm sure comparable resources exist with other schools, but hopefully it helps you figure out what sort of work you could do. Definitely exciting to look through! If you have comparable links from other schools, please share.

There was the generic "if you've been awarded a scholarship you will be notified within 10 days" line, but it's been 11 business days and 17 actual days, and I haven't heard anything. Congrats on your acceptance, I hope you hear back soon!

Here's a similar resource I found for internships done by Yale MPH students in 2019 that was super helpful for me:

Okay thank you!!! You too!! Hopefully we will all hear back soon 🙂🙂

anyone else who are waiting for Yale's response??(I applied for chronic disease epidemiology) My application was confirmed complete on Jan 6. It has been 5 weeks TT.

Hi the link doesn’t seem to be working in Chrome. Is there web browser restriction?

Not as far as I know. While I am using Mozilla, it still takes a while (~15 seconds) for it to load. Not sure if you gave it some time to load.

I'm in the same boat (also for CDE), my application was confirmed complete Jan 5th! I'm just waiting on Yale and Columbia and just wish they'd let me know either way already lol
I know Yale has been sending out rejections periodically, but I'm not sure about Columbia?

Hey thank you for your reply. Yes I actually waited for 10 minutes but it still wouldn’t open on my phone (safari) or on my laptop (chrome)! Maybe it’s my internet I’ll try again later.

Thanks!

Thank you for sharing both the Emory and Yale student internships opportunities. It definitely helps us understand what kinda opportunities will be approachable at both programs.

UCSF MS global health program also shares their student profiles with project details. I was wondering if UCSD shares student profiles with internship details. I tried finding UCSD MPH alumni and current student profiles and couldn’t find anything on their website. I would appreciate any advise!

The UCSD program is really new so it might be hard to find resources. I would just ask their representative directly for questions or get in contact with current students through their rep.

My sister is currently in an MPH GLEPI program and said SAS doesn't work on her Mac laptop, so I'm assuming it won't work on an iPad either. She said that there is an online version you can use but it's slower and the interface is a bit different so she can't follow along in class with it. She's made it work for homework and projects with a combination of the online version and using school computers that are already compatible.

Not sure how much that'll affect you but if you're getting a new computer anyways I'd say it's something to consider. Good luck!

Somewhat relevant, but I work in the data science field and have heard that SAS is on its way out. It's hugely proprietary & expensive, while there are a ton of great open source analytics tools now (R, Python). I would check with your program requirements, as I would hope most are transitioning away from SAS. Not saying SAS is bad, but if you can, it would be better to learn something open source.

I got an email from a Berkeley alumna today about my acceptance into the MSW/MPH dual degree program at Berkeley but I checked the portal and there's no update? I emailed the alumna back and she told me that the program coordinator for the MPH instructed her to inform me about getting in touch with her and that I was nominated for admission into the MPH.. What a way to find out. I lowkey wanted to hear back from the portal because I was like...is this really real?

This is all very true.

However, I'll definitely emphasize checking program requirements. I've taken MPH courses that required SAS, some that required STATA. I'm in an R course now. Yes, SAS is on its way out, but there are still a lot of obstinate tenured faculty who have been using it for 30 years and won't change anytime soon. What you use for your own research or what you pick after the program is up to you, but there will likely be software requirements in your coursework. If you can, reach out to a current student - they're more likely to be aware of the software in specific courses than the department staff.

According to the JHU financial aid portal, Hopkins will start letting people know they got merit aid in March

Did everyone here apply to the 45? I feel like a strategic mistake in applying to the 65 sigh
I don't think it's a strategic mistake if it makes sense for your background! I applied to the MPH-45 because I'll have 7 years of work experience by the time I start the program.

I saw on threads from past years that some people were offered money beyond their initial offer amount later in the cycle. Does anyone know if this happens only after you accept/enroll at a school?

thanks for the replies guys; easing some last minute jitters
