MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I saw on threads from past years that some people were offered money beyond their initial offer amount later in the cycle. Does anyone know if this happens only after you accept/enroll at a school?
I've heard that sometimes people will get more funding after the commit to a program because as other applicants deny the program offer, the financial aid office redistributes "extra/unused" funding to committed students.

I still can not access my JHSPH financial aid portal, even after I received the email saying the IT issue was fixed. Anyone else have the same problem?

This happened to me. Did you make sure the user was SISID@jh.edu and double check your SISID? It should start with TI, not T1. Otherwise, I'd reach out to them again.

I'm in the same boat (also for CDE), my application was confirmed complete Jan 5th! I'm just waiting on Yale and Columbia and just wish they'd let me know either way already lol
I know Yale has been sending out rejections periodically, but I'm not sure about Columbia?
Then we should receive decisions around the same time. Good luck mate. Columbia def send out admissions periodically

Rejection from Cambridge, second year in a row. Probably not the best fit for me, and my SOP definitely reflected that! Maybe I'll apply for a PhD, but for now it's not to be!

Hi everyone,

A professor at the University of Michigan told me that if I got a Research Assistant position or TA position that I would get full tuition + stipend + health insurance, and that the applications for these positions are during the Summer (so well after the April 15 decision deadline). I am really nervous about committing to a program without knowing if I have a position that would secure the funding such as the RA or TA position because my only other option is massive loans. Is anyone else struggling with this or has anyone heard anything different?

Thanks!

GPA: 3.55 (Mathematics) - GRE 167 V 173 Q 5.5 AW
Applied: Harvard MS Epi, JHU MHS Epi, U Michigan MPH Epi, Columbia MPH Epi, UCLA MPH Epi, Berkeley MS Epi
Accepted: JHU (1/24), U Michigan (12/20), UCLA (2/10) Rejected: TBD

Today I received similiar email from a professor (I know earlier for my work) of JHSPH and he said: such TA/RA do exists but rarely awarded to MPH students due to lack of necessary skills/mismatch of skill-sets and institutional pressures to favor PhD/DrPH students first and then MS students (mainly 2nd year) over MPH students. MPH (and similiar professional degrees) are largely money making machines for schools/universities; and I don't think, they will create precedence to harm their budgeting policy (again exceptional case might do exist). All other TA/RA for MPH are NOT part of Financial aid package but paid on hourly basis to barely cover full/some part of living expenses; so offsetting tuition is not possible.

I was struggling with this a few weeks ago after I heard the same thing from my interviewer for UMich. I don't think I can base my decision only on the hope of getting an assistantship position. I think it's better to wait until the school offers scholarships and financial aid and then make that decision. For example, if UMich doesn't offer me any scholarships, I will decline the program offer because that is too much of a risk to hope I get a TA position that will cover all of the tuition. In this way, the possibility of an assistantship position is only an added bonus but not the deciding factor.

I also got rejected from Cambridge. It was not even my first choice to be honest but it still hurt haha.

Is anyone here a current student at Drexel or seriously considering attending starting in the fall? If so, I would love to learn more about your experience/thoughts on the program!

I was just offered the Dornisfe Public Health Fellowship at Drexel (52k throughout the program and a $1,000 living stipend throughout the academic year).. I am honored and excited but also incredibly conflicted. Going into this process I told myself I would go wherever I could get the best financial aid package but never really expected to get into the higher caliber schools.. after visiting Drexel I had mostly written it off because I absolutely loved UNC... I'm just not sure how much more $$ I am willing to commit to to schools with greater reputations or if that is something that people who are hiring really look at?

Congratulations on the fellowship offer! If you don't mind me asking, how did you find out you got it? Was it on the portal or email?

I missed a call from them yesterday and they didn't leave a message (only found out it was from Drexel because I googled the number) so now I'm thinking I probably missed something important

I got an email with an attachment (nothing has show up in my portal yet) and the date on the letter was Feb 13... good luck!

I had this blank spot show up on my Columbia portal, my name used to be there... is there where the status update shows (above "Thank you for submitting your application...") or am I being super paranoid about a glitch? LOL

Guys, any idea about how generous Harvard is with financial aid or providing scholarships to international students for their MPH-45 programs?
Heard an img md got a full ride
I had a guest speaker (PhD student) in one of my classes a couple of semesters ago who was an international MD/dentist (don't remember which or if its the same degree internationally) and got a full ride to TChan for her MPH.

Just got accepted to Columbia HPM!!! Didn’t receive an email, just checked the portal and I had a status update!

Wow. That's amazing!

Thanks for the response! Yeah I'm figuring the same thing as well. I'm not really counting on getting much aid or scholarships because I don't have any background in public health. Because of this, I'll probably choose UCLA or Berkeley (if I get in) because they have the cheapest tuition.

anyone know how generous HSPH is with providing aid or scholarship for their SM program? not an international student.

Thanks for your response! That's kind of what I had figured. I am first author on a publication and she said that this would help my chances of getting a position, but if the position isn't specifically for MPH students then I probably don't stand much of a chance :/

I just checked my portal and in that spot was an acceptance (haven't received an email from them yet.) So I'd keep checking. Best of luck 🙂

Confirmed with Yale that I was not given a scholarship or need based aid, even though my income from Americorps last year was less than a third of their yearly tuition. I'm really thankful to have been provided an incredible financial aid package from Emory, but hearing that from Yale hurt. It doesn't seem like those from past years have been successful in appealing, but I might give it a shot.

My sister is currently in an MPH GLEPI program and said SAS doesn't work on her Mac laptop, so I'm assuming it won't work on an iPad either. She said that there is an online version you can use but it's slower and the interface is a bit different so she can't follow along in class with it. She's made it work for homework and projects with a combination of the online version and using school computers that are already compatible.

Not sure how much that'll affect you but if you're getting a new computer anyways I'd say it's something to consider. Good luck!
I didn’t find the online version of SAS to be too difficult once I started working with it more. I’m sure she’ll eventually get used to it.

JUST GOT INTO COLUMBIA! I feel like I am dreaming - I have always wanted to go to Columbia since I was in elementary school. I applied to Health Policy, the accelerated program. Application went under review 1/30, submitted 11/29. Good luck to everyone waiting!

Congratulations everyone on Columbia acceptances today! I just spoke with admissions about my SMS MPH application for Columbia and was told my application is in the faculty review stage and should have a decision "in a couple weeks". Does anyone know what this means for wait time? I had initially been told I should know around the end of last week at the end of January. My application went under review end of January.

Has anyone who applied to Columbia by the priority deadline still not heard back? I'm really freaking out

I have an interview at Michigan for the health policy department next week. It is not my top choice but still want to be prepared and do well. Does anyone have any advice?

Oh man, another blunder on my part. Didn't see the supplemental application on SOPHAS or the Columbia portal until this morning. Oops! Just filled it out, but it's probably a little too late at this point. Good thing Columbia isn't my top choice....
