MPH 2020: Applied, Accepted, Rejected, Waitlisted

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
congrats !! which program are you inclined to attend ?? what factors are you considering in order to make a decision?
Can I ask when did you submit to Hopkins. I submitted mine on December 1 and am still waiting to hear back.

Hi! Congrats on your acceptance! Did your email include any financial info? Or do you know when we might hear about this?
Thanks!! Unfortunately no they didn’t say much about financial aid, just to do the FAFSA, how to confirm Colorado residency, and how to apply for the thing where people from certain states can get in-state tuition. Nothing about scholarships or when/how they’ll announce financial aid.

If I remember right though you have to apply to scholarships individually.

Waiting very patiently for Hopkins today 🙁 Fingers crossed MHS Epi releases some more acceptances. Said it’s only been taking them 2-3 to process/make decisions
When did you submit? I am waiting to hear back as well.

Definitely following this because I found the same thing.
I think the biggest thing that I took out of my admissions meeting/tour/meeting with a current student was that they really want to try to emphasize that they are trying to get their students to be active within the community and stress the "practical sides of public health" (they only mentioned The Activist Lab about 50 times). I think the fact that it is in Boston and is within a few miles of many world-class hospitals and other public health institutions is also a really big draw. But I also am not sure how they are viewed by people who are established in public health and could potentially be hiring some of us in the future...

Hi guys has anyone gotten rejections from any of the following schools yet: Harvard Yale Columbia.

Im trying to get an idea of how much hope I should have in waiting hahahha

Thank you for this! I also think about how it being in Boston is a really big plus, but I keep thinking about everything people have said and know that schools have "reputations" and whatnot. I am applying to Tufts and wonder how those already in the field view Tufts versus BU.

What do you guys think about BUSPH? I found very mixed opinions online.

I had a chance to speak with two BUSPH students, one graduate and one current student. Thankfully, both are old friends from my undergraduate cohort so I trust that their opinions/experiences are not excessively biased. From both conversations I took the following Pros/Cons away:

Pros:

-The city of Boston provides a lot of health care related resources/opportunities.

-BUSPH has connections with real-world clients, which allows students to actually engage professionals, organizations, etc.

Cons:

-Intro/core classes may feel very repetitive if you have a background in basic public health courses (i.e. intro to PH, intro EPI, etc.).

-Course projects are a bit excessive. If you are not someone that enjoys group projects, you may not enjoy the structure of BUSPH (this was a comment made by someone in the Project Management concentration).

-Living cost in Boston is very expensive, the train is also very unreliable.

-Some of the management classes feel a bit "useless" (word used by my friend).

-Though resources are plentiful, career placement is not the best. You end up competing with Harvard and Tufts students for many of the positions post-grad.

Overall, BUSPH, for me personally, isn't a school I would attend unless I received a hefty scholarship (50%+). I find it to be too expensive in terms of living cost and tuition, making the ROI low. Just my two cents and takeaways from speaking to a couple of students. Best of luck!

Has anyone heard from UMN about scholarships??

I haven't heard anything about scholarships. Portal says scholarships are awarded between months of January- April. Hope we hear something sooner rather than later!

Accepted to Rutgers New Brunswick (Social and Behavorial Health Sciences) ! Has anyone else applied there? I submitted my app on January 15th and I'm really surprised to hear back so soon.

Congrats! I also applied to Rutgers and got in early this week.

Wait there’s a portal?! I received an email last week with a kind of unofficial acceptance after I asked my app status and it said this: “The school is currently reviewing all of the scholarship nominations they have received. Our hope is that we can send you your full admission packet, including scholarship information, by next week.“

Did you get an official acceptance with a portal login?

I received an offer of admission from UMN about 10 days ago, without any sort of financial aid package attached to it. Also, I am not aware of UMN using any sort of portal.

I received a very similar email as well from the Director of Student Services on 1/21. I still haven’t received an official acceptance package, any scholarship information, or any information on a portal. I was really hoping to hear back today because I’ve been anxiously waiting all week!!

that's really helpful, thank you!

I just recently got accepted by Tulane but they didnt talk about scholarship or funding at all. Does this mean that I am not getting any?

I'm referring to the link they sent in the acceptance email. The link takes you the application status portal

Yep, at least in my case. I emailed them to ask the same thing, and to ask if they ever reconsider in light of scholarship offers I’ve received elsewhere. The email I received today said it would’ve been in the acceptance letter, and they do not reconsider.

Hey everyone! First-year MPH student here. I'm currently in the 2 year Epi program at Columbia so if anyone has any questions about NYC/housing/funding/work-life balance/program specifics feel free to ask away. Best of luck to you guys as you go through this application cycle. It's a process but it's so worth it!
Hey! I got accepted into the Epi program. I also have a background in Biology. I am deciding between Columbia and another school that is much cheaper. I want to go to Columbia, but the cost of it makes me hard to make the decision.
How do you like the Columbia Epi program? Do you think it worth the cost?
Thank you!

When did you hear back from Tulane? Still waiting for an email from them.

Hi!! I've been following this forum since I started the whole application process but am only now getting around to fully joining the conversation. Congrats to everyone's various acceptances, may there be more to come for you all! Wondering how I make the signature where I can post my stats/schools applied to?? Just got accepted to GW's Global Health Monitoring, Evaluating, and Program Design MPH. Was accepted to Emory's MPH in Global Health 2 weeks ago, and UNC's MPH in Global Health back in December. Haven't heard from Columbia, Yale, Michigan, Tufts, or Berkeley yet, even though I submitted all of them by their priority deadlines, so a little anxious about those but l love both GW and Emory so now begins the pro con lists! Does anyone know if GW has any admitted students event like Emory's Visit Emory? I haven't heard about anything aside from scheduling my own visit to GW. Also any input anyone has between those two schools & their respective programs would be super appreciated as I venture into this decision process. Glad to be finally joining in on the conversations I've been silently following for so long now!

Guess I'm not going to Tulane then 🙁

I applied Jan 15 (by the priority deadline) and heard back around 5pm today (1/31)

Congrats on your acceptance and thanks for sharing that! I didn't get a link in my acceptance email, it was just a very basic email, not even the official acceptance one. But good to know the scholarships will be via email and not just through the portal. Hopefully we'll all hear soon!
