Is anyone attending the Columbia admitted students reception & admitted students day this Thursday/Friday?

Might be a weird question but - What are you planning on wearing? Can’t tell if these types of events are business professional or not
I am! I'm a girl, so I'm thinking of wearing a nice pair of jeans with a blouse and blazer. I might dress up/dress down depending on what everyone else says though.

Same here, I was thinking nice casual to business casual but most of all I’m planning to dress warmly haha

Anyone have any opinions on UNC MPH vs. Columbia MPH?
UNC has a lot of really great faculty members from what I have been exposed to. If you are a UNC resident, would be a great move and the programs are both very well regarded. Colombia is nice and obviously great, but living in NY financially can be difficult as a masters student.

Maybe take a look at the courses you will be taking and the general area you would want to be after graduation, those are two important factors.

Hi, everyone.I spent a long time catching all these threads. I am accepted to several good schools. If I am admitted to Harvard, I will be in Boston this fall!
Unless, maybe, I am going to come to JHU or Columbia. But my decision will change depending on fin aid. I am still thinking of Yale due to financial aid.
As you know, Yale ranking in the public health field is significantly lower than other schools. (as well as short history and a limited number of Alumni). Why is everybody considering Yale? What is the advantage of the YSPH?

What is the code for Columbia's CSS profile? I can't find it on the internet.

Hi Carla,
I emailed them a while ago about this and this is what they said: Financial aid is processed after tuition rates are announced for the upcoming academic year and admission has been offered. This happens once tuition and fees are set for the upcoming academic year, typically in mid-May. This is for federal loans only, as any financial assistance would be from outside resources found by the student.

So it looks like they don’t offer merit aid?? I was pretty disappointed by their response.

Thanks so much for the reply! Sounds like I should reach out to them directly as well to confirm that they don't offer merit aid... would definitely be disappointing. Also, definitely no way I can wait til mid-May (i.e after committing??) to know financial info, as that will be the largest factor in my decision, haha. Thanks again!

Hey guys! Hope you are all doing well. Has anyone heard anything regarding scholarships or financial aid from the University of Minnesota? Thank you in advance!

Hi! I was notified that I was nominated for scholarships and a fellowship in an unofficial admission email back in January. About two weeks ago I received an email congratulating me on being awarded two small scholarships as well as in-state tuition (I hadn’t even received an official admission email with access to the portal until the next day lol and I only received official notification of in-state tuition through snail mail and not on my portal). I have not received the full financial aid package yet, although from previous years people have said that you have to commit to the school before receiving the full package. That being said I am not sure how true that statement is and I can’t recall if they mentioned who they received that information from.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get off of waitlists? Long story short, I am on Harvard's waitlist and originally I was going to accept Columbia. After seeing how little aid they provide and how expensive it is, I realized that it would not be a smart decision to go to Columbia. If I have to take out loans and pay a substantial amount for a school, I would prefer it to be Harvard.

What should I do to increase my chances - the school mentioned that they would let me know mid may if a spot opens up. I am already planning on visiting the school, but aside from that. Any people successfully get off waitlists in the past?

Can I be added to the group chat if there is one please?
Thanks for asking! I just created a GroupMe, and here is the link! I think this is a good way for us to communicate and less likely to cause the leak of private information.
Please enter the GroupMe by this link if you decide to attend the UCI for the MPH program

Hoping to get thoughts from public health people on this, I don't know many in real life. I was deciding between UNC, Minnesota, and Harvard for Health Policy MPH. For a couple of reasons, I decided after visiting that UNC wasn't the right fit. I visited Minnesota already--I really liked the program--and I'm about to visit Harvard. Minnesota fits me pretty well, in terms of some research interests and general lifestyle, but some people have treated me like I'm crazy for not immediately picking Harvard!

Does anyone have thoughts on the prestige/alumni network/job placement of Harvard vs Minnesota? I know Minnesota is well respected in the Midwest, but I don't know how it's thought of out in DC or elsewhere.

Hi Lakers4Life24, would love to hear how you approached BU/what prompted the additional scholarship funds. Were you asking them to match another program?

Hi, I had a given financial situation happen to me and my family in the last two years and Boston looked into it and provided us with the scholarship. I haven't tried asking other schools yet about asking for financial aid, but I will keep you updated.

I just received an email from Columbia saying that I need to provide proof of citizenship in order to be considered for loans or scholarships. I feel silly that I didn't realize I needed to send them that additional info. Did anyone else have to do this? If so, can I just send them a picture of my passport?

I would call the financial aid office and verify that they have your SSN! I had to call them today because they didn’t have my FAFSA, missing SSN was the issue.

For those who applied past the priority deadline for Emory: I submitted my application on February 8 and it went under review on February 13. Today, I received my acceptance into the Epidemiology program! I figured this information would be helpful to those who may have been concerned about not applying by the priority deadline (like me).

I only applied to 2 programs - Emory and Georgia State. Still waiting to hear back from GSU.

The priority deadline was primarily for Merit Scholarships.

On Friday if last week, tons of people declined their admission because it was the last day Emory gave out Merit Scholarships. This explains why you received your spot today because people declined and spots were opened up.

During the upcoming weeks when people receive their financial aid package, expect more spots to open up. Another wave is after VisitEmory. So, those who were on the waiting list or people who applied after the priority deadline, those are the times when they should be hearing from Admission Office. Common sense.

I also only applied to those two programs in epi and am waiting to hear back from GSU 🙂

Is anyone waiting to hear back from columbia accelerated epi (or just columbia in general?) im unsure if I should just treat it like a rejection at this point.

Hi all! Hope everyone are getting offers from applied schools! I have a question regarding Vanderbilt MPH program. My application was verified on SOPHAS before their priority deadline, which is December 15. However, I have yet to receive any email confirmation from the school admission itself about my application being complete or whether it was routed for review. Is that normal?
Did you ever hear back from the program?

Anyone heard anything about financial aid from UCB or UCLA?
I got my Provisional Award Letter from UCLA last week (I was accepted in January), with the loans and work-study, etc. I attended a financial aid webinar last week and they said faculty is still making decisions regarding scholarships and fellowships. I believe they said the PAL's are all coming out soon.

I haven't heard anything from UCB. I think that since different departments are still coming out with decisions it will be a little while until they let us know about financial aid.

Is it a bad idea/foolish/ maybe even offensive to inquire about more funding from the University of Michigan if I already received a 75% tuition scholarship? I've been told that closed mouths don't get fed and the worst they could say is no, but I also realize that I'm pushing it with how generous they have already been. Thoughts?

I don’t think it would be offensive, they can’t take away your scholarship for just wondering about the possibility of more funding 🙂 As long as you are civil and polite I wouldn’t worry too much about it!

I think you said it right, closed mouths don't get fed. I'd ask! As long as you approach it respectfully -- the worst they can say is no! 🙂

Have any international students received scholarship information/ packages from Columbia yet?

Admitted to Columbia HPM and Johns Hopkins MSPH in Health Policy. Anyone planning to attend the admitted students reception for Columbia in DC on 3/18 or admitted students day on 3/27? Also, the Hopkins visiting students day on 3/13?

I decided to accept my offer of admission to the University of Illinois at Chicago! They were able to give me a scholarship (small, but the school was already affordable), but what impressed me the most was that the Epidemiology division head reached out to personally talk to me both over the phone and in-person when I visited the school. They seem to have a strong focus on infectious disease epidemiology and that's what I want to study!

Will visit Hopkins on the 13th!

So Berkeley just sent me an email saying that they have verified my application and it is ready for review?????? I submitted it 11/20 and got an email saying the same thing last year, so I am very confused. Berkeley you're letting me down!!

I had been delaying this just to wait for Harvard, but like many people today, I got nothing. So... I just accepted my offer at Johns Hopkins for the MHS in Epidemiology. It was my first choice anyway, so I figured there was no point in waiting anymore. I am so incredibly excited! I feel lucky and humbled to be where I am in my life and to have the opportunities that I have. I really hope everyone ends up doing what they want to do in the future. I am really glad I had a bunch of equally obsessive people to talk with during this application cycle, and I really do wish everyone the best!
See you in August! Let me know if you hear anything about a students page, etc.

Oh I guess Berkeley just sent the wrong email. got the acceptance letter at 7:30 PM PST!
Congrats!!

Did you receive access to the portal before you were admitted via email? I've been trying to check via portal but nowhere can I find a portal in my emails! If you did have access before getting admitted, would you mind sharing the link to it?

rejected by yale. the admissions office reached out to me to see if i was willing to retake the GRE because my quant score was low (149), and i declined after giving it some thought because of financial issues and because i had already been admitted to brown (i didn't tell them that)...they said they really liked my application otherwise. c'est la vie.

with that being said, i've officially committed to brown for the fall! can't wait 🙂
