In at Emory! (Epi)
Still waiting to hear from Columbia (top choice) and UCLA

Does anybody know if going to meet with admissions at Columbia/expressing interest would have any impact on admission decisions?

For all the people that heard from Yale, did any of you receive your "complete" e-mail 12/17 or later?

I also got my application complete email on 12/17. No word as far as admissions. I emailed them yesterday inquiring though, since I'm trying to plan a trip back East to visit. I'll let you know if I ever get a response lol.

P.S. I applied for epi of microbial diseases

I got my decision from Yale on 1/9 but my application complete notification email was sent 11/25.

By 'complete' do you mean an acceptance email? if so, yes I got mine Jan17.
And it was for HCM

I'm sorry that I wasn't so clear! I meant for those that have received a decision, was the e-mail that indicated that your application was complete sent 12/17 or later? I'm asking (besides the classic anxiety of having not heard) because I'm Canadian so I'm wondering if others have indeed heard back and mine is delayed since I'm international.

That's wonderful! Is it your top choice or are you waiting to hear back from others? I only applied to UC Berkeley and UCLA, and no news from LA yet.
This was my top choice since I live in California and the tuition is cheaper. I was going to apply to other programs on the East coast by the first of February but I heard back from Berkeley earlier enough that I didn't have to send in my apps. Since I got what I wanted I just decided to save money instead. WOO!

I also applied to Infectious Diseases. My GPA was a 3.5 (not too impressive), my quant GRE score was pitiful, and I don't have much public health experience. I was a public health major as an undergrad, but spent five years after graduation working in education. I was a data analyst for a school district, so I do have data manipulation experience. I actually left education with the intention of applying to veterinary school, but I realized that my interest in animal medicine was really a part of a deeper interest in infectious diseases. I know I'm reaching with Berkeley, but still going to hope 🙂.

Don't worry! I got in and I have a 3.14 and my GRE scores weren't the best either. So it's possible!

I think you stand a really good shot, course my opinion isn't worth much sadly. I had a 3.37 GPA (real low unfortunately) and I had a 157 V and 164 Q (so maybe that's what helped me?). I also think my essay was definitely one of my better ones. I'm currently a senior so I haven't taken time off either. Good luck though! 🙂
Aww thank you! Really loving all the positive vibes on this thread 🙂. Still waiting...tick tock tick tock LOL

Anyone going to University of Michigan's Admit Day on March 21st? 🙂
I've only been "recommended for admission" so it's not official yet (and therefore I can't let myself be excited), but it's pretty likely I'll try to attend if that becomes official 😉

However, if I get accepted to any more than a few of my schools, it'll get expensive super fast, so I've got to weigh that, I spose.

Got an email today, got into Berkeley's MPH program in Health Policy & Management. Wow, UCLA and Berkeley on the same day! I guess the UCs must be on top of things this year 🙂

I have noticed that very few people have applied to HSPH. Why is that? I mean, I, with my mediocre stats have applied to HSPH (maybe I am stupid). 🙂

hey Congr8s... when did you submit your application to Berkeley?

I think it's partly due to HSPH's slow admission process, nobody has heard anything from them (as far as I know), not even a "Your Application is Complete" email.

columbia is even slower than HSPH! I am waiting from both. HSPH actually sent me an email confirmation the day that SOPHAS forwarded my application (11/21) and said that there will be no email unless something is missing. And that decisions would be mailed out between end of Feb to end of March.

Got a nice email from Emory yesterday with more details, and an email from FedEx today saying that Emory has shipped my official admissions packet 🙂

Hey all! I just got accepted into UPenn, but I've been looking through all the forums and I can find absolutely nothing about the program... does anyone know anything about it? I know its small and unranked, but it is an Ivy. Also its looking like its not its own school of public health, but rather a subdivision of the school of medicine. I got a chance to visit all my schools last week, and absolutely fell in love with Yale.. anyone else considering that? Thanks for your help!

Columbia offers interviews for the mph?

I had my interview yesterday with columbia. My interviewer said they are just starting this year, specifically for MPH applicants in HPM. I'm not sure about other departments.

Which program did you apply to at Yale? What specifically did you like about Yale?

I'm applying to HPM. I really didn't think I would like Yale very much, I've heard that things there are a little more quantitative, research focused, and that they have a very small class. However, of all the schools I applied to I felt that they were the most approachable. I spoke for three hours with the director of admissions, and it never once felt rushed or that she was trying to get me to wrap up (even though I'm sure she had plenty of other things to do). All the current students seemed to be genuinely happy with the program. And they turned the small class size into somewhat of a strength - I think I heard that the health policy class was only 18 people, but they knew every single one of their professors very well (and frequently had dinner with them as a group).

All in all, it was the sense that every student enjoyed the program and was enthusiastic about taking advantage of what Yale had to offer. The second year has a lot of options for electives that you could take, and you theoretically could take classes from the Yale school of medicine, school of law, school of management... some of the best programs out there.

Of course, I haven't even gotten in yet so I'm trying not to get too attached. I heard that there are two steps, first the admissions office goes through and approves students and then they get sent to the faculty, who go through the application very thoroughly and have the final say. I made it through the first step, but I won't hear about admission until another 2-3 weeks. Hope that helped, and good luck!

Thanks for the feedback, cg! That's generally my impression about them too, but I think we should look more closely at the job placement than just the friendliness of the faculty and current students. That's what it comes down to when you want to know if you are going to get your money's worth.

ps, gee, for three hours? what did you guys talk about, LOL.

Hey cg122 I was accepted into HCM at Yale and I'm almost certain that this is the school/program for me. Just afraid to say it to everyone just yet. But I'm really glad that you're visit was positive and even reassured me of all the things I like about Yale to begin with. Good luck in your application. Potential classmates lol

Flyinghippo even though it is important to make sure career services will get you where you want to go I think looking at the students that go to Yale are a pretty proactive bunch. I haven't heard of anyone struggling to look for a job (thus far from students I've talked to) and no matter the job placement its us as the students who will get hired. YALE in my opinion is enough to get a foot in the door. Just my two sense!

I just booked my ticket to Yale's admitted students day on April 4th (@PubHPosse I know I know I was going to wait but I found a good ticket and had to do it). I think the program definitely has a lot to offer. @Flyinghippo not sure if we talked about job placement, but from my conversations, it can be a bit more of a struggle at Yale than other programs, so it depends on what you need/want. Definitely an important aspect to consider!

What makes you say that Emma? (In regards to job placement from Yale compared to other programs)

SILLY QUESTION ALERT: Is anyone bringing family members to Admitted Students Day/Open House? Can we do this?

It was from a current student. It's not that the students are unemployable, it's that (as I was told) their career services are lacking so you need to be prepared to do a lot of leg work (which of course you're planning on doing anyways, but it was just that career services for HCM are lacking in comparison to SOM and the rest of YSPH and he doesn't think this will get better for a couple of years).

And, no, I'm not bringing family, but I'm visiting with friends there!

I was under the impression and was told so by two faculty members and another student that students in HCM program get access to career services at both YSPH and SOM. wonder what he meant by "in comparison to SOM"

Another thing I heard about their career services was that they arranged a career tour in the summer for students to go around the country (just a few cities, SF etc.) to visit different companies. Not sure if this is an annual thing or just started this year.

@Emma1600 aaaahhhh OMG I haven't looked at any tickets yet. Are you staying with you're friend while there? I'm having a hard time find hotels!! Lol i know i'm guilty of looking into the weekend myself.

@Mha1991 I'm not bringing family either. But some of my friends' parents go with them but not to the actual visit/interviews they've had.

@Flyinghippo HCM students do get access to YSPH and SOM career services. But they are still two different entities. SOM is a bit more developed as far as connections are concerned. But they are more business instead of health management which wouldn't serve our purposes directly. Emma1600 is right when she says there might be more leg work on our part. But visiting companies would be interesting and super fun. Field trips never get old lol

can someone offer some advice as to why I haven't seen one single acceptance yet?

I'd guess an apparent lack of public health experience, assuming that the 7 years volunteering in a hospital wasn't public health related.

Yayy Emory chat! Did anyone listen in on the financial aid webinar yesterday? I've heard Emory was stingy with scholarships and that definitely seems the case, but Emory is still my top choice. At least Atlanta has the low cost of living. Also, I contacted Emily Lakemaker about Visit Emory. She helps with travel grants, so if you're interested in going, I would email her.

I've applied to HSPH too! Awaiting replies. But I think I might pick Emory over HSPH. Same credits (42 vs 42.5) spread over two years (24m vs 9m) + lower cost of living (Atlanta vs Boston) though tuition is a big problem (58k vs 47k) and not sure how the job opportunities differ!
hmm gr8.. I got into Emory Global health and Tulane global health policy too.. applied to Harvard for Health policy. I am still confused whether I should go for global health or Health policy🙁🙁
