MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FYI, if anyone is waiting to hear from UW (MPH in health services), I got an email today:

The admissions committee meets soon, and we'll have decisions no later than 3/15 -- likely by 2/28.
Thank you so much for passing along this information!!! It's been a long waiting period...

Got good news from Emory BSHE track. I had a big delay getting my app completed but it was forwarded to the department January 30 and I got offered admission February 7 :claps:

Just found out that I got into Johns Hopkins MPH/MBA dual degree!!!!!
Very excited since this is the first school Im hearing back from!

Anybody here who got into the program as well?

Hi @prashgopal, I applied for this program too. After looking over your profile, you seem to have a lot more experience and educational experience than me, so I'm positive that my chances are slim to none, and closer to none. You should be very proud of yourself, they only take about 15-20 students for the MPH/MBA dual. Did you end up getting a 320 on your GRE? My GRE and GPA are my weakest parts of my app, GREs in low 150s and GPA of 3.30. 3+ years of work experience in nonprofit health organizations (development, fundraising, marketing, communications and basic entry-level office administration) plus extracurriculars in health promotion (started my own online community for cancer survivors, patients and their families in 11th grade (junior year of high school)), and was involved in a slew of student organizations centered on health issues and global development. Strongest parts of my application are my work experience, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Plus, before transferring to the university that I graduated from, I was an International Finance and Marketing, Real Estate double major, so I do have a very expansive educational background. Graduated with a sociology major.

Heard from GW today, accepted for the MS in public health microbio & emerging ID ^.^ ... Did anyone else apply for that program? Or has anyone decided on GW for any track?

Also, congrats to everyone else on all these recent acceptances!

Hi @BPW1088 Thank you and yes I'm very happy that I got in!
But then I applied straight out of medical school and whatever experience I had was part-time. A lot of people discouraged me from applying without a full time work experience but I guess my solid part time work really helped plus of course a strong SOP and recommendation letters. I ended up getting a 318 on the GRE with a 90% in quant . My GPA was on the low side too, something that I was worried about, but I guess they do look at the complete package.
When did you send in your application? I submitted mine on the day of deadline and my processed app was sent to the department on 12/18.

Congrats!!! Such great news!! I applied for an MSPH too but in a diff department (intl health), but would you mind sharing when you sent in your app please? They told me decisions would be made in 4-6 weeks from January, so technically, I should hear back from them this week...

Has anyone heard back from UCLA's Epi department yet? 🙂

Nope, and on the decision status login it just says "submitted-pending decision".

There is a decision status login? Am I missing something? 🙁
The last email I got was on 12/2 telling me that my application was forwarded to epi dept for review...

Go to this link ^ click "decision status login", and enter the email address you used to apply!

I don't think you're missing anything, they never really mentioned anything about it, but I noticed it when I applied through the gdnet system. 🙂

Anyways, they'll probably notify us by email before updating the system or at the same time as updating the system.

Awesome, thank you SO much for the link! Appreciate it 🙂
Good luck to you!!

There is a lag time with the online system. I got into UCLA HPM (via phone call) over a week ago but my decision still says pending. The lady said it takes about 2 weeks for your acceptance to be entered into the system.

To anyone who has already received their BU MPH acceptance email: Did you receive scholarship/merit award information within that email? Or was it in a separate email? i.e. how do we know if we've received any sort of financial award?

Edit: Thank you to nhphd and brittmtl...indeed the merit award will be listed in the package that comes in the mail after the acceptance email. This is clearly stated in the acceptance email itself but I was so excited about getting into BU that I completely missed that bit!

It's in the package that they send in the mail (so you know about a week after the email)

I received information regarding the merit award in the package that came in the mail soon after. -- oops didn't see your reply!

I would call if you havent heard. I called an hour before they emailed me, and she reassured me that they would let me know soon.
So, when you called, she didn't tell you if you got in or not? Just to check the website? I called and she said "Your decision is in and the website should be updated by the end of this week or early next week". I was too chicken to ask if she could tell me over the phone before I hung up and now I'm regretting! But maybe they don't release decisions over the phone???

Accepted today to Saint Louis University!

Anyone else applying to/admitted to SLU? Haven't heard much buzz about them this admissions cycle.

Congrats on your acceptance! I'm applying for the MPH in epidemiology at SLU. Currently I'm waiting on one last letter of recommendation to come through so I probably won't hear anything until later in the month.

Hi @prashgopal, You still beat me on the GRE and have more education than me, which is probably the majority of the MPH/MBA applicants. Maybe, I'm not meant to be at Johns Hopkins... only time will tell. I applied at the later cutoff date, because I was working on my GREs..which really did not work out in my favor. I checked online and it's been saying my app was sent to the department on 01/27/, so I'd imagine I will have to wait until April to get a decision.

Hopefully, I'll get into other programs before Hopkins denies me, so I will have had built my confidence up and prepared myself for rejection.

Did you interview for the SLU MHA?

Did you interview for the SLU MHA?

Yes, I interviewed. The interview process consisted of interviewing with faculty, alumni, and a current student. The interview questions were the basic questions such as why did I apply, and what were my future plans. You are also given the opportunity to ask questions. I was informed that the class is 1/4-1/3 full.

I too am waiting for Colorado. 🙂 Nothin' yet, except confirmation they received my application 1/21.
Yeah, same. I thought it was weird. I feel like I'm not even considering Colorado anymore because they haven't responded to me about anything yet, except that they received my application.:/

Does anyone know if Tulane has an admitted students day?
As far as I know they only have a couple of open house events that are all held on Fridays, except for a two day Thurs-Fri open house held in March. It makes it really hard to come visit if you live out of the state because I work on Fridays!:/ bummer

Got into Hopkins MPH. My first choice!! So relieved!

Congratulations! If you don't mind me asking, when did you submit your application/ when was it taken for departmental review?

Ah okay, I was offered an interview and was supposed to be going down for the march 28th one, but I just can swing it financially so I think I'm gonna have to withdraw my app

Just found out that I was offered a GRA at SLU. It's by no means a full ride, but it's a pretty nice deal anyway. Super excited, but also super conflicted, because I need to accept it by 2/27, and I still have 6 schools to hear from about admission and haven't heard anything about funding elsewhere yet.

Does anyone have any advice in this arena? Or simply - what would you do?

Has anyone heard from Brown MPH or NYU Public Health Nutrition?

Did they give you the option to interview with a faculty member through skype? If not, I would ask Bernie Backer.

Do you need to accept just the position by 2/27? Or do you need to turn in intent papers and expenses at the same time? If you only need to accept the job I say figure out the consequences if you don't end up going to the school. Try figuring it out as soon as possible. This way you have as much information as possible while waiting on other schools. Best case scenario you get a better offer or you aren't penalized for ultimately declining the offer if you do hear from a school you wanted elsewhere.

They did, but that dissolves a lot of your ability for any sort of funding - which was the main reason for me attempting to get to STL

This might be a dumb question, but do you have to officially accept your admission before you can see your financial aid package (referring to Berkeley specifically, but not sure if they're all the same)? Thanks 🙂

I applied to UCLA, but community health sciences. When I try to log in on the decision status login page, it says "No applications for this email address were found. Please try again."

...Should I be worried?
