MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
BTW is there anyone who has applied to Columbia? I received an email from them stating that decisions would be released in mid-Feb and again in March after I submitted my application. I'm a little confused about what they mean by that. Do they release a batch of decisions in Feb and the rest in March or do they release all decisions in Feb and send everyone reminders in March?

I applied to Columbia (epi) but I haven't received any emails from them!! should I be worried?? (Although, I did apply after the priority deadline, so maybe that's why?)

I too have not received any emails from Columbia. @cloudzz, can you copy paste the email here?

yeah heard from them pretty quickly....applied 1/15 heard back on 2/6. (didn't get in...oh wells!)
Thank you. Sorry to hear! I got my confirmation email from them on 11/21 and still haven't heard...

How long does it usually take Emory to make a decision?

Here is the email:

Thanks for submitting your application to the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health masters program. Your application is complete and has been forwarded to the department for review. Decisions will be sent in the middle of February and again in the middle of March.

Please email [email protected] if you have any questions throughout the process.

I received it after submitting my SOPHAS app but before they verified and sent it to Columbia.

Did anyone else apply for Miami's MPH/MAIA?

I thought the program looked really interesting as someone who hopes to work internationally

(I was accepted to both parts)

KennedyAM,

Being from South Florida and a transfer from UMiami undergrad, you'd be correct in that way of thinking. If you're looking to work in the Caribbean, Central and South America, then Miami would be a good choice for you. If you're looking to work more in Africa and Asia, then you might want to consider another program with a larger international health focus, i.e.) Emory and Hopkins.

Still waiting to hear from Yale. I had to re-send my scores on 2/10 because I originally sent them to their school direct rather than SOPHAS.

Got the same email. I think it means that they send out two batches. They had a priority deadline as well so if you submit by then, you'd be in the first batch for sure.

I added Emory to my list on 12/20, it was mailed to Emory on 1/1 and I got accepted on 1/30, please check your OPUS account too, coz I got offer in OPUS on 1/30 and email on 2/9
all the best 🙂

Thanks, so I should hopefully hear at the beginning of March. The SOPHAS system screws a lot of things up, which is why my application was just mailed a few weeks ago. UNC made their decision within a week of receiving my application. No wonder they rejected me, they obviously didn't take time to evaluate my application.

dont worry Emory takes 3 to 6 weeks but will revert back quickly so have patience for few more days. dont be tensed Vanderbilt rejected my application and then I got into Texas, Alabama, Tulane and few days back Emory global health..

Thanks, @shailley! Your GRE scores are killer though. I'll try to not let one rejection make me believe that I won't get into any of the other programs I applied to. Congrats on all of your acceptance. I hope I have a few to report in the coming months.

I sure hope they tell us soon. From what I read on past years postings and here, when you applied did not impact when you are notified. Having all this information but not knowing my fate is driving me a little mad.

current Yale students or admitted ones 🙂!!,
quick question regarding Yale's marking scheme - I think it's absolutely awesome that it's a pass/fail marking scheme (puts more importance in learning and less in marks!!) but what happens if you want to continue your studies after your MPH? how can you apply for a phD for ex, if you don't have a gpa?

Haha I was thinking the EXACT same thing. But I was talking to a current student there now and she basically got NYU hospital to create a paid internship just for her. So I don't think that it will go against you as fas as getting a job goes. On the other hand, I think its widely known by other universities that they don't grade students so I doubt it will count against you. Also, talking to the Chairman of Columbia Biostats its really more about your research experience and proposals when applying for PhD and DrPH programs. And you can't grade those either?! Food for thought.

p.s. I was accepted into the MPH-HCM so the current student is in HCM so it may not be what you're interested in but following the general pattern right?!

Has anyone heard back from Icahn yet? I know others have received acceptances from Dartmouth and GW, but I am still waiting to hear from them as well - do they first contact you by email or snail mail about their decision?

I heard from icahn about 12/23ish!

As for GW - it took longer for them to get back to me than they say...

They were both by email

I am international. when did you submit you app to U Minnesota? and when did you got their admission. I am still waiting too. Only heard from Nebraska admission. I applied Harvard but Kind of unconfident with my low toefl score so really think I have low chance .

Hey... I applied for Uni of Minnesota on 29 Nov 13 and it was the first uni to offer admission!!!!!!! I think it was around 20th jan 14 I got acceptance. you would get through.. dont worry.. do you find it would be good to consider Minnesota?? i agree... about Harvard.. that is over ambitious destination for me!!!!!!!! Let see.. fingers crossed!!!!!!!

Me too, I applied Nov 29 but have not heard anything, I think its worth to consider of course, however it depend on how many offers for you. I think Minnesota is good except its too cold there 🙂))

I too am interested in knowing more about how Dartmouth sends out decisions etc. Been close to a month now and it's still radio silence, I've bit my nails down to nubs at this point 😳

Thank you jlb12 for posting the email content. Yes, this is the email I was referring to.
I am a little anxious now because I haven't heard back from any of the 4 schools I've applied to (Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Berkeley) and I'm starting to think that it may be stupid of me to apply to only 4 schools with no backups. Does anyone know whether BU still review new applications now or how they have dealt with applications turned in after the priority deadline in the past? Their priority deadline is Feb 1st. I am debating between whether I should add BU to the list if it is still not too late.

I followed up with BU, Yale, UPenn. BU Waitlisted me because my personal statement didn't reflect that I was strongly interested in their school in particular. Yale rejected me because of a lack of full-time work experience. UPenn wants to speak with me via the phone to discuss their application decision. Hope my data is helpful! I will continue to provide updates!

I never thought about following up with schools on their decisions, who and how (email? phone call?) did you follow up with Yale?

I followed up via email. I believe that it will help if I am wait listed at a place. Additionally, I am under the impression that UPenn may be reconsidering their decision. I believe this because I wasn't given a direct response in return but rather I was asked to make an appointment to speak to the director of admissions on the phone. So who knows?

I followed up with Linda Niccolai from Yale. I looked up her email address via google. She was very helpful and informative. It's nice to have criticism on my application. Over the next year I can spend time to utilize their suggestions to strengthen my application for anything I choose to do after this.

To those who got accepted to UCLA MPH, does your online decision status say accepted? I got accepted via phone call from the director of the HPM program over 2 weeks ago and my status still says "pending decision." hmm...

My status says "pending decision" as well and I was accepted last week. Same program.

talked to a current student and he says that he knows plenty of students who've gone on to do further studies so we should be okay 🙂

the more I'm talking to current students, the more Yale seems amazing - especially the really close connections students seem to have with the profs! starting to get excited haha 🙂 are you going to admit day?

YES and YES. Yale seems to just be amazing. And I am going to admit day! What program did you get accepted into?!
Totally stoked this was my 1/2 choice lol... it was an oscillating personal rank even after I submitted lol

chronic disease epi! it's one of my first choices too, that or hopkins 🙂

Seriously, we are like the same person lol. Hopkins was one of my first choices. But I visited the campus and I'm definitely leaning towards New Haven. Not because it was bad but I already go to a city based school and I think I'd rather a more campus feel. And its closer to NYC lol 🙂

BU Waitlisted me because my personal statement didn't reflect that I was strongly interested in their school in particular.

Got similar feedback, last year BU asked for a follow up personal statement talking up the merits of their school. Probably in your case you could write them a letter explaining why you like BU (if you are considering the school at this point) as apparently the only issue is “I’m not sold on the school”. My communications with BU admissions makes me think that they don’t so much like applicants using the school as a safety school, and want applicants who just want them.

I got into two other schools which are stronger in what i want to study, was considering BU due to geographically proximity to family and I’m not a brand hog who firstly needs to go to the stellar school. Oh well, there’s always Amtrak!

Couldn't hurt. I got into some excellent schools, and was surprised that I was rejected by BU. I think the key with BU is showing interest in the school specifically and perseverance.

Has anybody heard back from NYU's Community and International Health program?

I was on the phone with them this morning and they said they've finished the decisions for 200 applicants and have about 400 to go!

Does anyone know when JHU sends out scholarship info?

Does everyone think Columbia will start sending out decisions this Friday? Judging by the previous years...

I was asking about visits and this was part of the reply: "The Office of Admissions will begin sending notification decisions within the next 10-14 days"

Extremely nervous about Columbia! My biggest question remains as follows: Did everyone who applied to their MHA program get an interview? Or did they only select applicants they really liked? I know that there was some debate earlier in this thread regarding this question - I wonder if anyone has a definitive answer to this? (has anyone directly asked the admissions committee or their interviewer this question?)

if no one has a definite answer, anyone care to conjecture? maybe someone who went through the application process last year? anyone?

My interviewer said that this was the first year the department (HPM) is conducting interviews.

I think they contacted applications they liked -- It's a large program and I can't imagine them contacting everyone. In my personal experience, other schools (e.g. Michigan and UNC) typically contact applicants they are interested in to interview as well. Of course, this is just an observation on my end -- might just be wishful thinking. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks.

any idea how much weight these interviews are? my interview was ridiculously short... also applying for Columbia HPM

I have no idea, I didn't get around to asking her about the weight of these interviews. My interview ran about 25 minutes. I spoke with a current student -- she was very nice and engaging. She also followed up with me a few days ago with an email to answer to some questions about financial aid, etc.

Did anyone applying to the accelerated MPH in HPM at Columbia get an interview?

I got an email from the Dean, which I am pretty sure went to everyone. But I also got an email from a professor asking if I had any other questions. I was in the group that received an early decision on my application (December)/got a merit scholarship, and I am wondering if these sorts of emails are going out to everyone who was accepted in Dec.

I got an email today from a professor in the Epidemiology department and was wondering the same thing!
