MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would think that only happens if we decide to accept the offer, no? I did get the OrgSync online system username/password though!

I think you're right!
Just got 2 emails from the admissions office.

One from an employee stating: "I believe the UNI and ID are generated later in the spring and after the deposit has been paid."
Second one from the actual admissions office stating: "The Columbia ID numbers will be emailed to accepted applicants in the next day or two."

From those messages, I won't be expecting one until after I submit a deposit.

Btw, are you accepting the offer? Which department?

I am! For SMS.

I am attending! I was accepted to the Public Health Administration and Policy program. Will you be there as well?
Going to have to play around with my schedule and budget, but I hope so! Community Health Promotion here. On paper, I really like Minnesota's program, so I'll have to see if I like it as much in person.

They are expecting us to accept the offer without financial aid info?? 🙁

What is it that draws you to the program at Minnesota...it looks like you got into great schools so I'm genuinely curious.
I applied and was accepted into Minnesota but it was a impulse/back up choice, I'm pretty sure I won't be attending so didn't do much research into the CHP program.

No, no! They might not issue a Columbia ID without accepting. I'm certain they give financial aid info prior to any decisions made. No worries.😉

Did anyone apply to the University of Washington Public Health Genetics MPH?

Good question. There were a lot of factors that made Minnesota my initial first choice in the beginning, some of which were the curriculum, faculty, and location:
I like the breadth of the curriculum, and the feeling I can somewhat customize my electives to my particular interests better than at some other schools. There are quite a few faculty there whose research interests I share and whose work I've been reading for a while. Location-wise, it's not a terribly far driving distance (~4-5 hours) from my family and less than an hour from my long-term boyfriend with whom I'm currently doing long distance, and I also have some friends in the area - this to say that social support would potentially be important to me, too.

All that being said, I'm not sure if I would say I truly have a first choice anymore. I still need to fully investigate my other options, and wait to see if I get any funding offers from anywhere (I think this will potentially become a powerful factor). Much excel spreadsheet comparison is being done at this point :bookworm:

in at HSPH!!!!!! Yes yes yes! So psyched right now!

MPH in HCM.

I'll add my stats later.
Hey congr8s dear... 🙂 🙂 .. can you share your scores and experience details? I am really nervous now... 🙁

Accepted: UW (email, 2/26), UAlbany (email, 2/14)
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

UW and UAlbany were my top choices because of their specific programs. I'm trying to decide between them, so if anyone has any input to help me make my decisions, I will be really grateful!

And is there anyone else who applied to the PHGenetics program at UW?

Hey y'all, been a long time lurker and have decided to finally add my stats:

Undergrad School: Emory University
Undergrad GPA: approx. 3.2 (not stellar, I know)
Major/Minor: Biology/Environmental Studies
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Q-156, V-161, AW- 5.0
Experience/Research (please, be brief): honestly not that much, currently work at an infectious disease physician office and taught HS biology for a few months

Applied: WAY too many to list (think around 12 schools) I was terribly afraid of not getting into anywhere so I went overboard - finished my SOPHAS app around the first week of January 2014
Accepted: SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, Emory, Tulane, GWU, U Minn, Drexel, & UAB (all EPI)
Rejected: Yale, U Pitt (all EPI) 🙁
Waitlisted: n/a

And quick question: Anybody going to Visit Emory this March? I don't know if I should considering I'm an alum but the public health school is so stellar (and I am not going to lie, I also want to visit the CDC which I think is part of the visit...🙄). ALSO does anyone have any insights on U Minn? I have done a bit of research but would love to hear from people who have visited, etc. 🙂

Side note also but congrats to everyone on all of your acceptances!!!!!!! (Is it weird to think that we're the future of public health?)

Hey Emorygrad

When did you applied Drexel and when you got admission?

Hey there!

Emory and Hopkins are two schools I have acceptance from so far! I got into the HMP track at Emory and the MPH/MBA at Hopkins. While Im inclined towards Hopkins for the brand name, I'm assuming Atlanta is a better place to live in right? (I'm an international applicant btw)

How are you deciding between the two places?

That is wonderful! Congratulations 🙂! While I've only been to Atlanta and Baltimore a handful of times, I have heard that Druid H ills--the suburb Emory is in--is wonderful and Baltimore is well...kind of dangerous. However, Hopkins does have such a wonderful reputation all around, making it hard to pass up. At the same time, despite Emory being a smaller school, both are excellent choices in the field of public health! I'm planning on attending both Visitation days and making my decision based on that. I've been speaking to a friend in her 1st year at Hopkins and a friend at Emory who have both suggested reviewing the myriad of classes and using that as a basis. Ultimately, for me, I think it's down to finances and what feels like a better fit 🙂. Best of luck to you!

Hey Emorygrad

When did you applied Drexel and when you got admission?

SOPHAS mailing: 1/9/2014
Drexel email that all application information received: 1/13/2014
Acceptance: 1/30/2014
And then I probably got a package with merit award info/tuition/campus information around two weeks after 1/30. Hope this helps!

I hope so! I really don't want to throw $500 around before knowing where I can realistically attend. Hopefully if they start handing out ID#s we'll see it on here

Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts. In all probability, decisions from Harvard and Columbia are going to start pouring in today (any second now). 😛

(ugh..I'm a bit panicky now 🙁)
out of curiosity, what makes you so sure that those two schools will be releasing mass decisions today? Don't get me wrong, i sure hope you're right! 🙂

I'm not sure. 🙂 I said 'in all probability' based on trends from past few years. Either way I'm going crazy refreshing my email. 😛

I sure wish Berkeley would get back to us :/. I've been a crazy person since people started posting on here early February.

I am applying to Berkeley as well and looked through my emails I have sent them. In November, someone from Berkeley emailed me saying they release their admissions late March, early April. What is taking them so long???

has anyone heard anything from UC Irvine?

I thought they wouldn't start notifying applicants until Mid March as well, but then February 3rd people started hearing back. Then after the second week of February things went quiet....I am beginning to think maybe the rest of the notifications are rejections ;(. If that's the case I wish they'd just let me know already LOL so I can deal with it and move on. I only applied to Berkeley and Davis, and haven't heard anything from either of them, even though they both have already started notifying accepted applicants. I also monitor thegradcafe and check Berks and Davis' application page several times a day! :bag:🙁

To those who are anxiously waiting for Harvard, don't be paranoid if you haven't heard back yet. They are not only sending out acceptances now, because I got rejected by them last Friday. (Sm2 epidemiology)

Congrats!!! and thanks...
I applied MPH epi/bio in UCB...it's nerve wrecking waiting phase we all have to go through...
Will graduate from UCB May 2014 MCB....got accepted at Columbia,UPENN,Emory,Dartmouth, Yale, UC Irvine....waiting for UCB and UCLA....
My ultimate choice is UCB...

Hi! What track did you apply for UCI? I applied to the epi track and the wait has been painful...

I know some people already got accepted into UCI's EH track, but I am still waiting... What track did you apply?

I'm EH as well. I emailed them earlier this week just to see if a decision was made but haven't heard anything back yet. Do you know much about their program or network?

I know intellectually that I cannot control when they release it and that my phone will alert me the second I get an email, BUT I consistently refresh my email, the UC berkeley application center and the grad cafe. Insanity is doing something over and over again expecting different results.....I cannot wait until April 15. 😕

I feel you. I've only applied to 4 schools and the only news I have heard so far is a rejection. I've been refreshing my email non-stop for the past couple weeks already. :scared:

Each morning I wake up thinking "this is the day...they will let me know" and each night I'm like :scared::scared:.

I do the exact same thing! I thought today was the day for Berkeley to release some more decisions, any decision...

Does anyone have any feedback for UCSF's MS global health sciences program? I am strongly considering this program and would like to hear if anyone has an opinion.

I am not too familiar with their EH track, but I am sure some people here know a little more 🙂

Thanks for this, though I can't seem to overcome the fact that HSPH has always been my top choice!! I have literally become an insomniac over the past few days!! :nailbiting::nailbiting::nailbiting:

That being said, do you have an idea if they send out only acceptances and rejections without a waiting list as such? I got acceptances from all my top picks (Yale/Columbia/Michigan) and it surely would hurt if the doesn't happen for HSPH (their program just seems perfect to me, and then there's the MIT/HBS/HKS advantage... errrgggghh!!). I guess that is why it is the best school in the world, you just can't attach any predictability with these guys after all.

Got my rejection letter from Harvard just now in my email (HPM SM2), oh well, was pretty set on Berkeley anyways 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Oh crap. This pretty much means that they have already mailed all acceptances. 🙁

Curious what makes you say that? Somebody earlier mentioned they received their rejection letter sometime last week.

Hey Irikahsa,
When/How did you find out about your merit award from Columbia? I was accepted but haven't heard anything regarding financial assistance. When did you submit your financial aid documents? I received a link to a survey to fill out to see if I am qualified for any financial assistance, but I only received that link once I was accepted.

I also got a merit award from Columbia. I found out that I was accepted to Columbia last Thurs and they notified me about the award on Tues. However, I am an international student so I didn't fill out any financial aid documents but I did fill out the survey before I found out. I also filled out the scholarship section in the SOPHAS application. The financial aid office responds to email quite quickly so you might want to email them. Hope this helps!

Has anyone accepted to Michigan heard anything about scholarships/financial aid?

I received scholarship funding 1/28th, although it may depend on when each applicant received their acceptances. It seems as though they've come in two waves- Hope that helps!

I was accepted to Columbia's SMS program last thursday (!!!!) via email. Does anyone know if they also mail official acceptance letters/packets?

This is prolly a dumb question, but even if I don't get accepted to any schools, am I supposed to complete a FAFSA if I need financial aid just in case? (First generation student here)

I read somewhere that they do not mail anything - no packet or acceptance letter. The only correspondence is via email and their online portals.

YES! Always better safe than sorry. Some schools have FAFSA deadlines before they send out acceptances so fill it out ASAP.
