MPH Fall 2014: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is a pattern, but it's not as strong as some people are worried it is IMO-- and different schools do it differently. For example, I applied to two programs at Minnesota on 11/20 but I heard back from one on 12/19 and the other on 2/6! Obviously these two programs had separate review processes and different timelines (which I knew from their acknowledgement emails). An awesome person actually analyzed the gradcafe results for public health in R, if you'd like to get an idea of when people are hearing back:
http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/51808-when-will-i-hear-back-an-answer-from-gradcafecom-2010-2013/

I can't recommend checking those results enough-- it's calmed me down a lot regarding my first choice school (UIC) because they often get back to people a little later, and people often contact them to find out.

Just received this email from Columbia's SPH Financial aid after emailing them a couple of questions. Thought it might be useful to some of you.

"Our office is in the process of issuing the CUID#’s in order to complete the soon to be released supplemental application. We anticipate packaging students prior to admitted students day. The tuition flat fee is based off of the program. Most full time programs have a fixed flat rate whereas if you are part of the general part time program you are charged per point. The tuition charges will be discussed in greater detail was the new flat tuition rate for 2014-2015 has been established."

:/ I'm sorry mate ... What are your backups? And had Columbia interviewed you by any chance?

I did not have an interview. Right now it looks like NYU, but I have 4 other schools I am waiting on, so hopefully luck is on my side the rest of the way...

Wait, what is this supplemental application you speak of?!?!?

Also...anyone have any insight on the amount of need-based scholarships Columbia gives out, if any?

Thanks 🙂

It's a supplemental institutional aid application for more funding opportunities. It will be released soon!

I think that's the application that they will use to issue need-based scholarships. (I THINK)!

Keep us posted if anyone hears anything else please! Thanks

Okay thanks! The day after I received my acceptance email I got a financial aid questionnaire email from Columbia. It was very simple, only asked a few questions. Maybe that was the same thing? I haven't been issued a CUID# yet.

I'll keep everybody posted if I hear anything!

I got issued that survey as well... it's separate from the institutional supplemental aid application. This makes me hopeful that they are issuing more funding that is not comprised entirely of loans! Need THAT! Lol.:heckyeah:

I'm kind of confused about Columbia financial aid. They say they require parental information if you are under 24 (I think)? Does that mean that your parents need to file their taxes before you can complete the financial aid application? No other schools that I applied to require parent information...does anyone know more about this? I already submitted my FAFSA without parent info.

I read somewhere that that was primarily to see if you're eligible for certain scholarships... but won't affect the amount of aid you receive, because technically we're all considered independents now.

I think it just means your parent's information needs to be in the FAFSA, but I could be wrong. If you already submitted without it, I'm sure you can update and add the information. I input my parent's estimated information but they have not yet filed either so nothing is 100% accurate and I will eventually have to update with the final numbers.

Hopefully they'll give us all a bit more information as the process continues.

I really hope we can all get some free money, because Columbia is my dream school but I don't want to be 100k+ in debt after graduating only to get a job that pays ~ 60k a year..you know?

Amen, brother.

I've been in contact with Columbia financial aid too, they sent me this last week:

"At this time only the 2014-2015 FAFSA can be completed with a deadline date of February 1st. We are still accepting FAFSA applications for financial aid. If you did not submit the FAFSA by February 1st please submit it as soon as possible. We cannot confirm receipt of any application materials until late February to early March when we go live for academic year 2014-2015. While it is not required to include parental information on your FAFSA if you are over the age of 24 years old or have been steadily employed with a consistent income it is suggested you do so because there are some scholarships that require inclusion. If you do not provide any parental information this will not make ineligible for need based funding however you will would not be considered for scholarships that require parental information. The 2014-2015 supplemental application is not yet available. If and when it becomes available you will only be able to access it with a CUID# which is given to you if you are admitted to the Mailman School of Public Health. Merit scholarships are still being determined at this time. If you are a recipient you will be notified via email. Other forms of financial aid such as need based aid and federal loans will be packaged based on eligibility. We anticipate packaging students in the next couple of weeks. You will receive notification of your award prior to the April 15th deadline."

Admissions is only half the battle... I'm beginning to worry if we haven't heard about a merit scholarship yet we won't get one. I just have to look as needy as possible, I guess! (won't be untrue, really)

Is anyone else still waiting to hear from Emory? Granted my application was sent to the appropriate department on 02/13, though I'm still getting anxious for a decision.

Congratulations on all of your acceptances! I am also a fellow Wolverine. If you don't mind me asking, what are your top choices? I just got into JHU Epi as well dated 2/21.

Go blue! Are you a senior at U of M? What's your major? You should add me on facebook so we can talk more- I'm Hannah Reses. My JHU acceptance was dated 2/21 as well but I didn't see it until last night! Do you know if there is an accepted students visitation day? I am home this week in NJ and would love to visit while I am close by but I can't get in contact with anyone from admissions.

I really don't know yet what my top choice is, but I would say I am probably seriously considering Yale, Emory, and JHU at this point. What about you? Where else have you been accepted and what's your top choice? What kind of epi are you interested in?

Thanks...I'm just worried that if I add it, it will make me less likely to receive funding from other schools. I'm not too hopeful about receiving a lot of aid from Columbia anyway, even if I do add parent info. So frustrating!
Understandable. Luckily for me, my parent's tax information just helps my cause so I had no issue doing it. I don't think it's mandatory though!

Sigh. Applying to private scholarships now. Sad times, I thought this part of my life was behind me.

I graduated from Michigan last May and I was a neuroscience major (class of 2013). I'll add you on Facebook. I only applied to the University of Michigan's hospital and molecular epidemiology program and JHU's cardiovascular disease epidemiology program. My top choice was Michigan as I did not expect to get into JHU, but I am strongly considering JHU now. My decision depends on funding because I am also from NJ and I had to take out a lot of loans in undergrad and I will be applying to medical school after my first year. Check out the admitted students website. There is a link in your acceptance that gives you A username and password for the website...Admitted students day is 3/28 or 4/4 for JHU. You can register for the date that you would prefer.

Which sources are you using to look for scholarships? If you don't mind me asking... I'm a part of the same struggle!

Can you send me the link to the admitted students website please? The link in my acceptance isn't working.

Try right clicking the link and click on where it says open in new tab. The link didn't work for me either. I'll see if I can get the link on my phone. Let me know if that works.

Don't mind at all! Right now I'm just browsing on fastweb.com (used it for undergrad too). Fastweb is...okay at best. Every now and then I'll find one that I actually qualify for and doesn't seem extremely tedious to fill out lol.

Thanks! Been doing the same... also if you're a part of particular social or ethnic groups, there are some great scholarships out there... Latino/Asian/African American/lgbt/international students, etc. Google search and there are some great private links for scholarships.

I've gotten desperate and have been playing scratch-offs, haha!

In any case, best of luck to us all!

I'm in the same boat but mine was received 1/29. It's quite the waiting game!

I heard from them last week and got rejected. They received my application early January...like 1/9 or something, but it might be per dept.

Anyone else still waiting on Columbia? I am waiting to hear from epi and freaking out!

I'm waiting to hear from the socio medical sciences dept. I am crossing my fingers for good news.

Hey y'all, been a long time lurker and have decided to finally add my stats:

Undergrad School: Emory University
Undergrad GPA: approx. 3.2 (not stellar, I know)
Major/Minor: Biology/Environmental Studies
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Q-156, V-161, AW- 5.0
Experience/Research (please, be brief): honestly not that much, currently work at an infectious disease physician office and taught HS biology for a few months

Applied: WAY too many to list (think around 12 schools) I was terribly afraid of not getting into anywhere so I went overboard - finished my SOPHAS app around the first week of January 2014
Accepted: SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Albany, Emory, Tulane, GWU, U Minn, Drexel, & UAB (all EPI)
Rejected: Yale, U Pitt (all EPI) 🙁
Waitlisted: n/a

And quick question: Anybody going to Visit Emory this March? I don't know if I should considering I'm an alum but the public health school is so stellar (and I am not going to lie, I also want to visit the CDC which I think is part of the visit...🙄). ALSO does anyone have any insights on U Minn? I have done a bit of research but would love to hear from people who have visited, etc. 🙂

Side note also but congrats to everyone on all of your acceptances!!!!!!! (Is it weird to think that we're the future of public health?)

I'm planning on going to the Admitted students weekend in March. I'm hoping it will help me decide between Emory, Columbia, and UC Berkeley. (From California-- never have been to "the South"! )

AH! Congrats!!!! How did you find out if you don't mind my asking?!
Thank you! They emailed me! Twice lol. Technically I was recommended for admission and will receive my formal acceptance in about a week

Any acceptances or rejections yet from harvard health policy and management programs?
I heard from Harvard HPM (SM2) last Thursday 2/27 (accepted). Don't lose hope though. I think I applied earlyish (early November). Good luck!
