It really is an issue. If they happen to get a log of how often I log in to check my status, they probably think I'm crazy by now.


Has anybody heard back from UIC yet? I haven't heard a word from them since submitting my secondary at the beginning of November.

Haha, the brick wall emoji. That's exactly how I feel and I'm not even that sure Emory would be a good fit for me! I'm going to be a basket case come February since I'm way too emotionally attached to Columbia.
 
If I happened to be really really lucky and got into both Emory and Columbia, I'd be so torn. Emory is great because I already live in Atlanta and it has connections to the CDC 😍. However, Columbia has a great program and it is in NYC (I love NYC). Both programs are excellent for ID Epi, though so I would be so happy to go to either. This whole process has been so much more stressful than I expected.

It's going to be a difficult decision no matter what. I really don't know when I'd find the time to visit schools, but I think it may come down to that.

Definitely Columbia, great program, great city, and fell in love with the campus a few years back when I visited! What's yours?

I applied to both schools as well (with Epi concentration). It would be lovely to get into Columbia because it'll be a nice excuse to stick around my family (based in North NJ). However, I would consider the move to Atlanta for Emory.

Columbia, for sure. The faculty really stand out to me as having experience that match my goals. I'm so nervous, though! I'm definitely in a period of wallowing in self-doubt right now.

The faculty at Columbia seem fantastic, also the research projects they undertake at all of the centers are pretty fascinating, as well as the different courses offered at the school. I browsed through their catalog and there are so many that I'd die to take.

I know how you feel, definitely wallowing in self-doubt myself after two rejections already! I wasn't particularly gutted about not getting into Dartmouth and UPenn (I wasn't too keen on them anyway), it just made me anxious about the better schools.

It's even more nerve-wracking that the e-mails appear out of nowhere. I swear, I refresh my e-mail 2000 times a day -nothing. But when I'm all relaxed and minding my own business, then BOOM an e-mail!

Hopefully we'll all get some good news soon!

Hopefully this doesn't bode poorly for the rest of us interested in epi (GLEPI, EPI, or ENVEPI) at Emory! You seem to have heard back really early. Also, did they notify you via e-mail? Or did you find out through OPUS?

Yeah, both are amazing schools. Columbia is probably my dream school, but Emory has excellent offerings and I would be incredibly happy to be accepted to either.

I'm with you on all of the course offerings at Columbia. There is no way I would be able to take everything that I would want.

Don't be bummed! You got into a really top notch program and plenty of MPHers go on to medical school. I have no idea what your background is like, but you'll have opportunities to beef up your med school application, whether it's through volunteering, practicums, research, or even taking additional undergrad science classes (Emory said you could do this since they have a flat fee - I asked 🙂). Don't give up on med school if that is your dream and CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Gee, thank you. you've really lifted my spirits. MPHers are a lot more supportive of others than pre-meds. it's a breath of fresh air!

I've applied to UGA, GW, Columbia, GSU, Emory and both USCs. I got a denial from UGA last month, but I'm staying optimistic.

Graduated: UT Austin with biology and philosophy double major, minor in french.
SOPHAS calculated gpa: 3.84. mcat: 31.

Not sure where to find verification date? it was probably early-mid december, though.

Did you apply MD/MPH combined program? They must have thought your application had some really impressive stuff to give you such a quick turn around time!
 
Just called the epi department at JHU to check on my application. They said they review the masters applications (not the MPH degrees, the MHS or ScM) as a group at the beginning of February. So now I (and anyone else) can stop obsessively checking the website!

Whew, just took a sneak-peek at the graduate housing rates for GW. I forgot how expensive DC was. I'm kinda surprised that they do not have better housing rates for students.
 
I have a phone interview for Tulanes MPH (online) program. I'm so nervous. Still no word from the other schools as of yet.

You did Americorps! That's a huge leg up (grad schools in general love seeing Americorp/Peace Corp/TFA type stuff, haha!) Your work experience is great, and your GRE scores are solid. I'm sure you have a great chance at your schools 🙂

Still anxiously awaiting any news from my schools. This period of silence is killing me D:

its very expensive. I live in maryland outside of dc and its still expensive. There isnt really any way around it unless maybe you find a house to rent and roommates.

I second Cyd, I also live in MD bordering DC & its expensive. Im at the point of considering living w my parents (ewwww) If I get into UMD rather than pay for housing. I think the cheapest option is renting a room in a home (rowhouse) vs having an actual apartment.

I second Cyd. I also live in MD bordering DC the cost is what it is. Im at the point of considering staying with my parents (eww) if i get into UMD (WHEN ARE THEY RELEASING DECISIONS AHHH). your best bet is prob renting space in a rowhouse vs renting an actual apartment and not living right at GW and just using the metro to commute

It is definitely expensive for those looking for their own place. If you're OK with having roommates (shared house, own room situation), it will definitely bring those costs down. For example, $1,500 (cheapest listed rent for Columbia Plaza Apartments) is more than double what I pay for rent a month - and I live in a pretty awesome area in DC.

OH, and I'm adding a note - my situation is a bit more unique; I rent from an older alumna of my college. My college has a very active "young" alumnae listserv and very active Facebook pages as well. I seem to get emails about open spots in group houses or full apartments, even a whole rowhouse, fairly regularly - at least once a week. If your alumnae are anything like ours, they can be a BIG help in, if not directly advertising their own places to you, hooking you up with housing ads from their friends.

I applied to UMD also! I'm not a MD resident unfortunately, though. Not super relishing the idea of a commute from where I am in DC up to College Park, but I do have some fond memories of the 83 bus line to IKEA from where I used to live. 😀
 
Guys!!!! I don't know what this means but I checked OPUS today and there was a new link under View Admission Decison that says Pay Admission Deposit!!!! There's still no decision when I click the decision letter but this is a good sign right?? Ahhhh freaking out!
UPDATE: just called RSPH and they said I've been accepted!!!!! And that the decision letter will be made available later today!!

I'm glad to have helped! I've been so impressed by how supportive and positive everyone is on this forum!

Honestly, it's very likely you were the first person accepted to the MPH in epi, so that is really something to be proud of. And you might discover you like it better than if you had gone to med school. One of the reasons I'm doing the MPH is because it gives you a broad array of health career opportunities. You might not be making 6 figures out of the MPH, but you're also going to have a much better work/life balance for much longer. There's a lot less stress, too, and no risk of malpractice suits. I've read a lot of personal accounts of people who went to med school, including on this site, and plenty are glad they did and wouldn't have it any other way, but plenty of others wish they would have taken other paths due to the extreme level of commitment on every level (financial, time, emotional, legal, etc.). And, like I said, it can be a gateway to med school if you choose it to be (or really any other potentially related doctoral level program). 🙂

I'm still considering med school, but I've been in another career for so long (one with a very good work/life balance), that I'm not ready to make that commitment. And, for me personally, I enjoy math, research, and writing much more than lab sciences. Especially if you're recently out of undergrad, it might give you an opportunity to become more aware of what you enjoy doing most.
