Today I found out through Wolverine Access that UMich's Health Management & Policy (HMP) department has recommended me for admission, so things should start happening for other folks as well. Good luck to you...

I applied for the intl Epi department. Where does it show it on the wolverine access? There are so many links, I'm afraid I'll miss t haha

Yeah, it can be kind of tricky.

From the home page, click on "Application Status." Once on that page, look for a link entitled "View Admission Recommendation" or something similar. It will be below the "View Application Data" and "View Credentials" links. If it's not there, a recommendation/decision has not yet been made.

Given that you submitted nine weeks ago, I would consider sending an e-mail to the admissions department asking them for a status update. Based on previous years' threads, nine weeks for UMich Epi seems a little excessive. Good luck...

Sure! They have two; one on March 6 and one on April 10. I honestly don't know how I'm going to swing these campus visits, but I wouldn't be able to make a decision without going. 😵 Hopefully I'll be able to narrow it down a bit more soon.

Columbia has a housing network which has places in harlem and near the medical center. Rents can go from 700-900 for a room

I am adding this as a new yorker and columbia alum, so my two cents. the area from 180 (washington heights ish) t0 66 st (lincoln center) are all very safe. I have worked in these areas as well for five years. I would expand the search to a larger area and work through it.

Got accepted to Columbia's MPH program in Epidemiology! Here are my stats!

Undergrad School: Rutgers University - New Brunswick
Undergrad GPA: 3.23 (used to be in a Pharm.D program that brought my GPA down)
Major/Minor: Public Health / Biological Sciences
GRE : 163 Verbal and 162 Quantitative, August 2013
Experience/Research : 1 year experience in stem cell research (mostly biomedical engineering research though)
1 year experience in cancer molecular epidemiology where I also had my own independent research project on chemoprevention for pancreatic cancer.

I plan on obtaining a certificate in Chronic Disease Epidemiology as most my research experience focused on cancer. I just got the email February 6th and applied by the preferred deadline. I believe my SOPHAS application was verified before Thanksgiving.

Thank you!! Not that you're the expert on Columbia housing, but I'm assuming that only students have access to that network? I'm asking because my best friend is packing up and moving with me wherever I go. I know, it's a little weird, but she's ready/in a position to move and my boyfriend isn't!
 
For those of you who have heard from Tufts, when did you apply? I submitted early January (my recommenders totally dropped the ball...) but I haven't heard a peep. Really anxious for results 🙁

Congratulations! 😀 That's earlier than I thought they would announce merit scholarships! I've been living with the false hope that they would round up my GPA by .03 points in order for me to be eligible. GAHHHHH hint hint just kidding but not really

I applied January 12th and heard back February 2nd
 
Got an email this morning from Emory telling me that they would like to offer me an admission to their Epi program! I was rejected by Global Health two weeks ago. Global Health Epi was my second choice and I didn't even bother to list Epi as my third choice (which I regretted). I am glad they still gave me an offer even though I didn't list Epi on my application! This is amazing!
 
Does anyone have thoughts/opinions on the Hopkins MPH program? I was recently accepted with a scholarship that will cover 50% of my tuition, which will be very hard to turn down. However, I have some reservations about the 11-month intensive structure of the program. I am worried that I will not get the depth that I might get in 2 year program, and that there will be some large trade-offs associated with "rushing through" the program, especially because I do plan to pursue a doctorate afterwards (likely a DrPH, possibly PhD)

Congrats! They automatically consider EPI for people who put down GLEPI. They actually told applicants not to put down both GLEPI and EPI as choices!

Johns Hopkins is regarded as one of the top schools of public health in the country. Congrats on getting a great scholarship to the school!
 
Hey everyone! As there are a lot of posts to this thread (which is awesome! congrats to everyone on their acceptance(s)) I have not really been able to see a lot on thoughts/opinions about GWU.

Yesterday I received acceptance for their Global Health Program Design, Monitoring and Evaluation program. I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about this program and/or GWU MPH programs as a whole.

Of course I have done my research on the program and know the curriculum, but I'm looking more for current students or others who have been accepted to intend to attend GWU and why they chose there above all others.

I got accepted to the same program! GWU has a student ambassador program where you can email current students and ask about their experience. This is the response I got from a current Global Health student:

In particular, I want to know how accessible the faculty are?

Most of the professors I have dealt with are completely accessible in person (usually they work 1-2 days from home, but they are usually in the office), and they all make an effort to respond quickly to emails. In my experience, office hours are rare, but via email teachers will make time for students interested in appointments about the program, research, or career guidance.

Are there any research opportunities (such as graduate/research assistantship) for students in the department?

Every department has a practicum advisor who specifically helps MPH students find their practicum, which is a mandatory internship requirement in the program. Beyond that, career opportunities related to my department are sent out on a regular basis which include full time positions for after graduation (or during school depending on the requirements) as well as internships.

I work as a Residence Director on campus and I get free housing.

What is the campus culture like - do most students get to know each other very well?

It’s different from undergrad. You have people in the program who graduated last year, Moms who haven’t been in school in decades, people who are starting their second career, dentists, full time workers, part time workers, etc. We all take the same core classes and we do at least 2 group projects a year so you will definitely get to know students. And there are happy hours for EVERYTHING so there is always an opportunity to meet people from different programs too.

What are some of the strengths about the Global Health program at GWU that you think that make it unique and unmatched by other schools?

GW focuses on providing students not only a top-notch education on the theory of public health, but continuing opportunities to apply your skills and test your professional abilities. With 400 partners worldwide, our students have unparalleled access to opportunities in public health. By the time you graduate, you will not only have a new degree, but a strong start in your career, with internship and professional experience to show for it.

To be completely honest I chose GW because of the location. I think every school can say that they have amazing professors who are doing amazing research but our location definitely sets us a part. We are in the heart of public health. PAHO is around the corner as is the World Bank, Red Cross..etc. We have a number of public health organizations within a few miles of our institution and I think that gives us the upperhand. We can easily set up informational interviews with these NGO representatives and we can even apply for winter/spring internships (most people apply for summer internships but they are usually out of state). I love the opportunities our location provides its students.

I was accepted into Columbia, Boston, Emory and GWU. I am still waiting to hear back from Yale and Tulane.

Congrats on your all of your acceptances! I was also accepted into BU and waiting for Tulane

It will probably just come down to cost at this point for me because each of their programs and connections have a lot to offer.

Definitely, definitely do it. Definitely. 50% off tuition at Hopkins? First of all, congratulations. That's awesome. Second of all, it is the top public health school in the country. Those 11 months are intensive. You're not going to miss anything, especially if you're continuing on to a doctoral program. That will shave a year of coursework off of your studies and Hopkins will look excellent when applying to doctoral programs, which are much more competitive than MPH programs. The only reason I can think of not doing it is if you aren't up for how intensive it will be; you're cramming semesters into quarters and doing a practicum and probably research on top of that.

If you're not interested, would you mind trading me identities? (Joking, of course)

Nope no email. Got a packet in the mail. Well I wasn't in the public health school for my undergrad, but there was some crossover. From the people I know who went there the program is fine, but networking/job/internship connections are limited to the New Jersey area. For the price it is definitely still in consideration for me, as it would be a 1/4 of the cost of the other programs I'm interested.
 
In case anyone is waiting on GWU, I emailed them yesterday because it's been 10 weeks and I thought maybe something was wrong with my application (changed designations and it was a big hoopla) BUT judging from the response, I think they're just a little backed up. Maybe give them a couple weeks if you still haven't heard. Hope this helps!
 
Hey everyone--hope this isn't considered off-topic, but: I'm planning to make women's and reproductive health my focus in grad school. Which is generally regarded as a better school for this discipline: Columbia or Harvard?

I was recently accepted at Columbia and am hoping (hope hope hoping!) to hear something positive from Harvard soon. They both seem like equally strong options, but I was curious about "word on the street." Thanks!
 
I got rejected from UWashington and waitlisted for Emory. I'm kinda surprised to be waitlisted, since I've been expecting a rejection soon. But I am super dissapointed with UWashington's rejection, as it was one of my top choices 🙁
 
How long did people have to wait for decisions from Drexel, Tulane, and UPitt?

I heard back from Pitt in about 3 weeks. Still waiting on Drexel though cause they're making me choose between an MPH and MS and that app I havnt even finished yet

What programs did you apply for at Michigan/UNC? I haven't heard from UNC's master's-to-doctoral epi program yet and was hoping for a merit award from Michigan.

I haven't heard from UNC about scholarships yet, but if you're out-of-state, you can apply for NC residency after your 1st year (you just have to prove you've lived in NC for 1 year) and in-state tuition + fees is about half the amount of out-of-state tuition + fees. Not sure how "easy" it is to get residency in other states.
 
Has anyone had any luck corresponding with or talking to an actual person at Columbia? I know they're busy, but they sent me a contact name and I haven't gotten a response. Also tried reaching out a few times during the application process. I'm definitely going to visit but really want to go to school somewhere where the faculty and staff will make time for me. It's great to go to a school with such a reputable brand name, but I'm paying for training which includes research experiences and rec letters from faculty so I'm really nervous to go to a school that won't even answer questions about the program...

Oh wow thank you so much for that information that would make a HUGE difference. I established residency for undergrad and that was an intense process. Have you established NC residency yourself or did you just research it?

I was able to get a hold of someone during the application process via email to confirm my app was OK since I kept getting "SOPHAS is missing your so-and-so's letter" emails after submitting because I had added an optional fourth reference (but then pulled it). Haven't tried otherwise...is your contact department specific?

I was born and raised in NC and my family still lives here. 🙂

When I had my interview for MCH, all the students in the current student panel were 1st years and out-of-state and in the process of applying for residency. They all said that they moved here in July. I think the process is a lot easier for grad students because you're basically considered to be independent at least financial and tax-wise. Since both Michigan and Minnesota are also public, I would ask a financial adviser or current student on the residency process for those two states.
 
Recommended for acceptance at Georgetown for Masters of Health Sciences Administration!!! Now just waiting on my official acceptance letter from their Graduate School. Here's some hope to those with low GRE/ GPA. I had incredible recommendation letters and a really good personal statement (in my biased opinion lol). Now I'm still waiting on UMD which is really starting to bug me because I see ppl have already started receiving their decision.
Congrats to everyone else on your acceptances so far and good luck to all of us still waiting on some decisions. No news is good news ! lol
