MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone here know on what basis Harvard awards scholarships to MPH students?

I'm actually surprised that no one on this forum has mentioned that they've received on. I guess there are only 40 available and emory has about 500 mph students
I received one very unexpectedly--and it's really confounding my decision process, though I am thankful to have received it.

Aww congrats. So bittersweet. I wasn't going to believe they'd been given out till someone mentioned it, but congrats!

Thank you very much! If I decide not to go, I have to let them know about a week in advance of the April 15th date so that the money can go to someone else--so there's always a chance that more people will get good news later on.

Not going to get my hopes up since their scholarships are 40-100 % tuition, that'd be hard for anyone to turn down.

I do wonder what the breakdown of scholarships by department is though.

Just called JHSPH....they don't start (!) reviewing master's applications until the beginning of next week, and they hope to have the first round of offers made by the end of next week.

Which masters program are you referring to? They sent me an email early January asking me to upload transcripts so that they could get a head start at my application. I have yet to hear anything.

Yes, I applied to the MSPH program in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control ( International health department) and got my decision 21 Feb. Others from this thread ( health policy I believe) have gotten their acceptance too.

I can tell you that mine is wayyyy less than 40% and that I will very likely turn it down in favor of NYU or Columbia, and it's for the HPM department.

The ScM degree in Epidemiology (I specifically applied for General Epidemiology and Methods).

Interesting. Thanks for sharing all this info!

JHSPH emailed me saying they will have a decision in a couple of week. I applied to ScM Biostat.

Has anyone heard back from Yale? I called the admissions office this morning and it went straight to voicemail 🙁

I think most people have heard from Yale. I e-mailed them on Monday, since I hadn't heard. They e-mailed me back within 5 minutes to let me know I'd hear by the end of this week.

Thank you!! I just called them and she said I'd know by the end of this week or by next week. Does anyone know how many spots are open for the MPH program and how many applications they get every year?

That's the program I applied to. A couple of weeks?! Not giving us much time to make decisions.

Yale has one of the smallest MPH class among all schools of public health and their acceptance rate is similar to that of Harvard. I assume they get tons of applications each year and it is very competitive. 🙁

I went to one their Admissions Info Sessions late fall. They said they take about 150 - 170 students and they get about 1500 or so applications. Hope that helps.

So basically, a 10% acceptance rate. Sounds very similar to all the Canadian universities I am applying for...Ah well as long as they put me out of my misery of waiting I'll be happy 🙂

Thanks you guys!

yeah no time at all. I'm hoping they seriously mean a couple as in two weeks, that's already the end of March.

Congrats! Could you share the timeline of your application?

I was verified by SOPHAS on 11/19. Next, I received an e-mail on 12/2 from Yale stating they had my application and then another e-mail on 12/10 letting me know my application was complete.

Not sure what department you talked to, but as far as I now most departments started sending out letters of acceptance about a week ago (I received mine, from the International Health department, on Feb. 23rd). So, assuming you applied by the Jan. 2nd deadline, they have definitely been reviewing Master's applications.

Sad, I wrote to JHU International Health Department ( I applied to the MSPH program in Global Disease Epidemiology and Control) and was told that aside from the 75% scholarship during the second year, they are not offering any other scholarship opportunities.

''As for your question on merit based scholarships, aside from the 75% tuition scholarship on your second year, unfortunately we are not offering any other scholarship this year. ''

Mine was confirmed by Yale on Jan 6. It seems like it takes a long time for them to review applications...

Thanks for posting that, I was going to ask them the same question (I was also accepted to the IH dept for an MSPH). It seems the Master's programs are a 'cash cow' for the PhDs even at the top schools. (I understand the situation is the same at Columbia and Harvard).

I'm sorry about your rejection! MCH is actually the program I was accepted to. Did you look into applying for MCH at UNC? I was accepted to both schools/programs and trying to decide what's best. I was born and grew up in NC and went to UNC for undergrad. I know it's a fantastic school and I have some experience/connections with the faculty there, but I'm getting tired of living in NC tbh. What do you know about the department at Berkeley?

Oh don't worry about it haha, I got into the rest so it doesn't phase me. Well the first thing they say is that MCH is extremely quantitative heavy. If you look at the curriculum, it's a lot of statistical analysis. It's an overlap between policy and quantitative research. The MCH curriculum is designed in a way to prepare you best for a career in public health, but it doesn't allow much wiggle room for designing your own curriculum, but then again- they know best of what's practical. I think the major strengths are in research at Berkeley, where they really try hard to place you in an internship you'd fit into well, and something that compliments your work here. I haven't seen one student that's unhappy with the program, everyone loves it! Also, the Bay Area is a huge plus side for public health, it's really progressive in thought and a lot of upcoming organizations incubate themselves here, so its great for experience.

Just called Yale because I have also been waiting for awhile and they said that they are behind but they hope to have all decisions out by the end of next week. The lady on the phone took my name and said that she would let the committee know that I had called.

I applied to the Epidemiology department. Their deadline was February 2 but was extended to March 25, which might explain the delay in responses.

Do you know how Epi at JHU compares to Epi at Harvard? I am trying to decide between the two schools, specifically Epi at Harvard vs. International Health at JHU (but I would be taking plenty of Epi and Biostats courses since these skills are in such high demand for jobs).

(Such a late deadline would lead one to assume that the Epi department at JHU is not in as high demand as other top schools.)

Finally received my rejection from Hopkins MHA program. I knew it was coming as my stats were no where near their averages and the program requires an interview which I never was invited to. Its still about surreal to see a rejection tho, particularly because this was the last school I was waiting on. but to be honest, I don't think their accelerated program would have been a good fit for me anyway coming straight out of undergrad. Being accepted to 4/5 schools with a 149 Q score was still pretty uplifting... Best of luck to the rest of you still waiting !! no news is good news.

No Columbia anyone?

Loool I feel so alone in this boat.... +pity+

I applied to their Epi program on Jan. 2 and have yet to hear back. I'm very curious what is going on because I have been accepted by both of the other schools I applied to, Harvard (Epi) and JHU (International Health). At this point it doesn't really matter if Columbia accepts me as Harvard and JHU were my top schools (still haven't made up my mind which to choose), but I am a little stumped as to what is going on with Columbia (other than the fact that I applied after their priority deadline).

Hi Everyone,

Been lurking here for a few days and figured I'd participate!

Applied: GWU (MPH-Health Promotion program)
Accepted:

Waitlisted:

I submitted my application on 12/9 and had a complete application on 12/30. I received an email from GW on 12/30 stating that they received my application and that I'd be hearing back in 8-10 weeks. Anyone know if it's a true 8-10 week turnaround? I'm getting anxious seeing that some have already heard back from them, but I know I applied later in the year. Thanks and good luck to all!!

Hi all,

Just wanted to update and say I got my GWU acceptance email today! The process took about 9 weeks from verification date in SOPHAS (12/30) to today. Best of luck to everyone still waiting! Is anyone going to the Admitted Students Preview Day on March 21...?

Hi! I'm new here. I am an international student. Has anyone been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill MSPH to PhD? I have been accepted in the HB department and until now it is my first choice. Do you know something about the reputation of the program besides the ranking of the school?

Thank you!🙂

Thanks! I applied to Health Promotion as well 🙂 If you decide on GW, looks like we will be classmates!
Oh wow yep we might just be. It's pretty high on my list at the moment, I am still waiting for 6 other decisions 🙂

Odd! I applied to their HMP program. The week after I applied I received an invite to an interview... and now its just waiting time!

Congrats though on Harvard and JHU! 🙂 Epi and International Health are two great fields!

Thanks 🙂 Harvard was quite a shock!

Ah you're doing a PhD, I am going for a Master's.

I've officially declined my offer to GWU. If anyone here is on the waitlist, I hope that you're able to now get a spot 🙂 I liked the program, but the lack of funding was the deciding factor. I refuse to take out $55,000 in loans per year.

Exciting! Let me know if you choose GW. I put all my eggs in one basket and only applied to one school since I live and work in DC, so it makes the choice easy lol.
