MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FYI from Columbia:
While we anticipated being able to provide students with their award letter prior to this Friday’s admitted students day, we have not yet gone live for 15/16. Our central office is currently upgrading our financial aid program software in order to give us the go ahead to go live. Once we are live, hopefully within the next couple of days, we will begin packaging students and notify them via email.

I'm just waiting to be accepted but thank you for this!!!!

I wanted to get some opinions on contacting USF about acceptance into the second part of the program I applied to.

The initial eMail I received from USF said it takes 2-3 weeks to receive an admissions decision (Jan. 27th). I received an acceptance from the epi department on Feb. 24th that said I was recommended for acceptance however I'm still waiting on notification from the Global Health department. Do you think it would be wise to contact that department to check on my status? It's been 24 business days since they acknowledged my app and said it would be 2-3 weeks.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Just heard a "within 4 weeks" from NYU and UConn and "within 2 weeks" from Tulane...I just want to know!

Congratulations on the acceptances and good luck deciding! I was wondering if you could tell me when you heard back from CUNY?

Thanks!
Sabrina

Finally posting my info! Still waiting on JH, although I am not getting my hopes up as they have the #1 program.

Trying to narrow down decisions. Hopefully visiting some of the schools and talking with professors will help. CUNY wanted a decision a week ago, so they're out.

Has anyone received any information from Penn State? I'm trying to figure out when they have accepted students days for graduate students. As of now I am deciding between BU, Drexel and Penn State.

Congratulations on the acceptances and good luck deciding! I was wondering if you could tell me when you heard back from CUNY?

Thanks!
Sabrina

I submitted my application through SOPHAS around December 15th. My last recommendation was submitted the first week of January, and I heard back from CUNY on Feb. 2nd notifying me that I was accepted. I got a follow-up email that day requesting confirmation within 3 weeks. I knew I wouldn't have heard back from Penn State and JH until after that deadline. Kind of a waste of an application and GRE fee. I wish they extended the deadline to April, like most schools.

They have extended to April. I emailed them to confirm and they sent back that the deposit isn't required within 3 weeks

This is what the email said:
To reserve your space in the CUNY SPH graduate program for Fall 2015, you are required to submit a non-refundable $250 (USD) commitment deposit. This deposit will be credited to your first semester bill. The deadline for submission of this commitment deposit is three weeks from the date of your acceptance letter.

Thanks for letting me know they extended it! I'm not sure why they didn't send another email saying so. I think based on my options I'll probably choose not to attend anyway.

No problem. My acceptance said the same thing but I emailed them so that I would have in writing that they said the deadline wasn't required so you may want to do the same!

Congratulations! I got into the MPH Environment Health Sciences. Guess we're neighbors!

By the way, how are you paying for grad school? I am a little worried. FAFSA gave me projected loan of $20,000, but it does not factor living expenses. So it'd be $30,000 for the year :\

Also, anyone going to UCLA admitted day?

Congrats to you, MPH neighbor !!! And I have no idea now ): I'm worried too. I just recently sumbitted my FAFSA, which gave me a similar projected Direct Stafford Loan estimate of $20,500.00. I have like a 0 budget for everything. I am totally confused about housing options too. Where do you plan to live? I am considering on-campus grad housing at Weyburn Terrace but still not sure if that's the best choice for affordability and closeness to campus. Is there a portal to find nice roommates too?! Navigating the sites feel overwhelming!

I wasn't able to go to the admitted day. Did you go??

Long-time lurker on these boards last year and finally decided to join in all the support here! I'm coming off of a year applying for psych PhD programs and the welcoming environment of this board makes me even more confident in my choice to pursue public health 🙂

So far I've been accepted to GWU, BU, Columbia, UCLA, and UCI (just now!) and am waiting to hear back from Claremont (dual MPH/MA) and Berkeley. Given my interests and history, I've applied to all MPH programs and Health Promotion/Community Health/Social Behavior concentrations.

I currently live in Los Angeles and am definitely planning on attending UCLA's Visit Day. I'm debating whether or not to attend GWU and Columbia's visit days as well. If anyone has any questions about life in LA, I'd be happy to answer!

WOW, congrats on all the acceptances!!!! I got into UCLA and UCI for the same programs 🙂 But definitely planning to go to UCLA. Which school(s) is your top choice for attending? Did you attend the UCLA Admitted Student Day? If so, how was it? I love LA, but I definitely do not love the lack of affordable housing/rent for a broke student ): Do you have any advice on housing for UCLA (on campus vs off campus)?

This sounds like they should have said "we couldn't get our s*** together in time, sorry." Blaming it on technology lol...

Anyone going to UMich's open house next Friday?

Make sure you have coins if you plan on driving. All the meters around the SPH are coin operated. And I believe the structural parking behind the school is private parking.

I attended UCLA's Admitted Student Day. I'm not in the Epi program, but I had a chance to talk to a student in their Epi program and they love it. I'm also a bit worried about housing if I do choose UCLA since I heard everything around school is pretty pricey. Apparently many students choose to live in Culver City and Santa Monica and commute!

Good to know, but I'll be flying in from the West Coast so probably won't be driving.

Also, have people been hearing from UC Berkeley? I heard the admitted student day is sometime during March......

Yes I heard a little while ago, but the Admitted Students Day is Monday March 16th!!

Hi, may I ask when did you submit your application? And also does Mt. Sinai give a decision deadline? Thanks

I submitted my application 2/20 so a really fast turn around for me.
Decision deadline is in the late summer! Hope this helps 🙂

Hey guys! I've been lurking for a while but decided to finally post here cause I have a question.

Just recently got my acceptance letter to SDSU (for Management & Policy) and I'm planning on applying to USC soon. I've seen a lot of people say SDSU and USC are pretty evenly matched in terms of their Pros and Cons. Currently I don't know which school I would rather attend so I would love more input from you all on the matter and would be really grateful for advice!!

USC:
  • Pros: prestige, close to home = living at home to save money, better networking opportunities, WHO
  • Cons: high tuition, classes not on main campus, only MPH program NOT school
SDSU:
  • Pros: cheaper tuition, ranked + great overall program, MPH School
  • Cons: living expenses, not as recognized as USC, ? networking opportunities

Congrats to everyone getting their acceptances and good luck to the rest who are still waiting!

Thanks! My application was verified on 1/30 but so far nothing from them 🙁 And the other school I got accepted in wants a reply in 2 weeks 🙁 Mt Sinai is my first choice I hope I hear something soon.

I went to undergrad at SDSU ( and have lived in San Diego most of my life) and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about campus life/rent/living/etc. DM if you have any questions!! 🙂

I am sure you will hear a reply back soon! With your verification date, you still have like one more week so I would be patient! Sending you good vibes!

Heard back from UC Berkeley! I applied MCH and didn't get in, but it's alright, it was my only rejection. They sent an email to check the portal!

Also, I'm a current undergrad at Berkeley so if anyone has questions I'd be happy to answer them 🙂

Has anyone who has been waitlisted for Emory heard back yet/ know when they will make their final decision?

UCLA is currently my top choice - I received some generous scholarship offers from BU and GWU, but with in-state tuition and the fact that I want to live and work in California and probably Los Angeles after graduation, I'm 90% certain I'll end up at UCLA! I'm still waiting on full financial packages from all schools and decisions from Berkeley and Claremont before I make my official decision.

I went to their admitted students day and really enjoyed it - the students seemed to be really happy with what they were studying and the opportunities available to them. I live in Los Angeles and am probably going to stay in my current apartment and commute, but I have several friends who go to various UCLA grad programs and most of them live in Brentwood (more expensive), Culver City (medium), or the Palms area (cheapest). To be honest I don't know much about the UCLA housing options but you might want to email the department and ask if they can put you in touch with a student to talk about those things. The students we spoke with seemed really helpful in that regard! One thing that was pointed out to us - MPH students are NOT guaranteed housing, and the Fielding School only has 8 slots in the grad housing near campus to give to their students. Off campus, independently owned apartments/homes are probably your best bet unless you can figure out another way in!

If you have any questions about life in LA in general, feel free to PM me! I've lived here for about 7 years total now between undergrad and working full time and really love what LA has to offer. 🙂

On that note, I know that there is a UCLA grad student complex on Sawtelle in the Palms area - there is a Blue Bus pick up/drop off right outside that goes straight to UCLA. It's a good option if you want a convenient apartment, location wise, for cheaper than Westwood rents!

How do you like Berkeley? How is the cost of living? General cultural, political, and intellectual atmosphere?

I have been admitted in the Health & Social Behavior department and I am seriously considering it. My research interest is in structural determinants of health and health disparities and they seem to have one of the strongest department in this respect.

Also those who have been admitted in both UCLA and UC Berkeley, can you tell me which one you are choosing and why?

Just received an email from the student services manager at UNC for the MPH-RD (nutrition) program at Gillings....WAITLISTED. They adhere to a policy of not disclosing waitlist rank.
They are requesting that admitted students make their decisions sooner rather than later but they may not be able to offer a final decision until April 15th.
patience is a virtue...:yeahright:

Ugh same here. On one hand it's nice they didn't outright reject me, but I'm soooo sick of waiting.

I had my interview with Hopkins for the dietetics practicum today. I have no idea how it went, but I think for every question I had a weak answer for I had another that I knocked out of the park. I was really surprised they didn't ask me more about my experience with nutrition. However, they really were interested in why I wanted to be a dietician in addition to having a masters (that was actually one of the questions; I was caught off guard so I think it was one of my weaker answers).

Oh, and as it were I got my 'waitlisted' email from UNC about ten minutes before I left my hotel. A real confidence booster :yeahright:

I am pretty sure I will be attending Berkeley in the Fall, and it is because of my love for the bay area as well as getting a research position with a professor that shares my interests. I feel that the people at Berkeley were very open and quick to reply to any question I may have had as well as being incredibly easy and understanding through this whole process. I feel that I would be able to make some great connections and meet many other people who share my interests, and hey Berkeley is a great school 🙂 but that's just my opinion lol

Berkeley's great. The cost of living is high, I think that's just a Bay Area thing, but living in a college town means things are pricey. Research is by far the strongest aspect of Berkeley, although the classes are definitely tougher than you'd expect them to be- I think this is what pushed me away from it the most, the environment seemed a little too competitive for my liking. However, as a grad student, the faculty caters to your needs a lot, and there are a LOT of grants you could apply for through the college.

On the lighter side, the food here is amazing, and the weather is great. There's always something going on, and the campus is lively if you live in the right spots. It's a great environment, and that coupled with the strengths of HSB makes it hard to beat!

CUNY signed the ASPPH Resolution that stated they wouldn't make the deadline to accept an offer of admissions any earlier than April 15th. I'm not sure why their original e-mail said that you had three weeks, but it explains why they sent out another e-mail letting you know you had until April 15th. The original e-mail may just be a copy from past years.

So according to Emily Lakemaker, Emory merit scholarships did go out this week via email.

Emory people: Has anyone heard back from their request to stay with a student for Visit Emory? Trying to secure my travel plans/budget for all of these campus visits.

Columbia people: Did you just get this e-mail about the virtual campus tour in lieu of an actual tour on their admitted students day? Barring how I feel about that, do you see the video link under "More"? I can't find it...

Ugh crap. Does help with narrowing down decisions a little, but now I need to decide if Emory is worth $20k extra than WashU.

Ok, so I posted earlier in the year and now I can say I have heard back from all my schools! I am having A LOT of trouble deciding where to go based on scholarship money and otherwise. Anyone accepted to either of these schools, message me because I don't follow this thread religiously. Every time I log onto the thread I have 60 new pages of material to read and I just give up  Anyways, my tough decisions are between SLU Health Policy and Minnesota Health Policy!

Undergrad School: University of Minnesota Twin Cities
Undergrad GPA: 3.1
Major/Minor: Scientific and Technical Communication, minor in Nutrition
GRE: 154 V, 147 Q, 4 AW taken 9/20
Experience/Research (please, be brief): Current AmeriCorps member serving at a nonprofit related to health, former Ronald McDonald House intern, volunteer for 2 years at Ronald McDonald, Student Board Treasurer for two years, Grants President for one year, grassroots starter for local campaign, half a year of research in Forestry Department, Archival Student Worker at Library during college

Applied: Colorado State, Oregon, UIC, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, Yale, SLU
Accepted: Colorado State Health Policy, Oregon Community Health Sciences, UIC Health Policy, Indiana Physical Activity, Minnesota Health Policy, SLU Health Policy
Rejected: Michigan, Yale (no biggie though, I applied as a shot in the dark!)
Waitlisted: none, but decided not to finish my Arizona Application. It was too far from home!

So again, I am having trouble deciding between SLU and Minnesota. Hallllppp!

For those who haven't heard from Tufts yet..has anyone called or emailed admissions asking when we can expect to hear?

I'm sorry about your rejection! MCH is actually the program I was accepted to. Did you look into applying for MCH at UNC? I was accepted to both schools/programs and trying to decide what's best. I was born and grew up in NC and went to UNC for undergrad. I know it's a fantastic school and I have some experience/connections with the faculty there, but I'm getting tired of living in NC tbh. What do you know about the department at Berkeley?

I can't find the "More" tab, either. Geez--I really was considering Columbia until all of this technical nonsense. They really don't seem to have their act together.

If anyone *can* locate the magical more tab, would you the please share it with the rest of us?

Not really sure if it was supposed to be the same video, but Mailman has always had a virtual campus tour video on their website, which is also available on Youtube:

I agree... It's to the point that each morning I'm expecting 1) an e-mail blast from Columbia and 2) a correction e-mail. 😛

Just called JHSPH....they don't start (!) reviewing master's applications until the beginning of next week, and they hope to have the first round of offers made by the end of next week.

That's correct, I also asked. All of their scholarships have been given out. If you were awarded one, you would know by now.

So I also asked Emory as well and the ADAP told me students should hear by 3rd or 4th week of March for scholarships...maybe GLEPI scholarships haven't been awarded yet?

I am planning to apply for medical school but wanted to beef up my application. I actually applied to mostly Special Master's Programs and Johns Hopkins was the only public health related program/school I applied to. I learned about the program last October and wanted to apply but didn't even think I'd get in just because of JHU's prestige, so I put off applying to it until the beginning of February. It turned out to be the first school I heard back from and accepted. And after looking into the program a bit, it would be hard not to go! I think I'm going to take the offer but just wanted to know if anyone has any feedback on the MHS program? It would be much appreciated!

UMD college park decisions are out apparently. I was rejected which I kind of expected. Now just waiting on my Hopkins rejection.
