MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

Would you recommend any particular online places to find housing in Chapel Hill? So far I've had a good experience using Zumper (https://www.zumper.com/).

I've been in Chapel Hill for the last 5 years, if anyone has any questions about housing. If you're looking to rent a small home, condo, or townhouse type deal then the site http://www.chapelhillrent.com/ has a lot of helpful listings. I personally wouldn't recommend living in Durham just because parking on campus as a student is a nightmare. It's expensive for a good spot, and many spots are park and ride. So if you live in Durham, to get to class you're looking at a 15 (possibly slightly more or less) minute drive to campus, then park and a 10-15 minute bus ride, then walking from the bus stop to your class. However, Durham can be great if you're cool with commuting and prefer to be away from the college town feel/have a strong dislike for hordes of undergrads.

Many grad students live in Carrboro, a hipster-y little town right next door which has both houses for rent and (in my opinion) affordable apartment complexes. The bus system runs for free from Carrboro into campus. Many grad students also stay in Chapel Hill close to school, but as mentioned you will see a price increase for the convenience of being able to walk/catch the free Chapel Hill transit buses.

Most of the apartment complexes have their own personal sites where they post their available units. This website has links to many of them and also to some local real eastate companies: http://housing.unc.edu/off-campus-housing.html.

I personally live just south of campus. I pay low 500's for rent and I can be standing at the door to the SPH in 12 minutes if I time the bus correctly. Hope that helps!

I've living in the Triangle area for the past year and a half now and I've found the entire area to be pretty safe. It's most expensive to live in Chapel Hill with the areas closer to campus being more expensive. If you want less expensive housing, it's best to look closer to Durham. Durham has a reputation for being more dangerous but I live there and that hasn't been my experience. All housing in the area is pretty expensive for a southern city but you can find deal. It's good you're looking for roommates because they significantly cut costs! If you need any specific help, feel free to inbox me!

Agreed with the above. I lived in Chapel Hill for 5 years and have lived in Durham for nearly a year. Durham has a lot of cool things to do, rent tends to be lower here, and I've never had any safety concerns. The commute from where I am in Durham to UNC's campus is about 20 minutes, 30 minutes in higher traffic. The Triangle also has pretty good public transportation options for commuters. There are many park-and-ride lots in Durham where you can park your car for the day and take the Triangle Transit bus to UNC's campus.

Hi all! I'm a little late to contribute to this thread, but I've been keeping up with it since I began the application process last year... I'm currently living and working in MD (working at JHSPH, actually), and only applied to JHSPH and UMD. I was accepted to both, but am having SO much trouble choosing between the two. On one hand, the MPH program at JHSPH is, you know, ranked #1. Plus, as an employee, I would receive certain tuition remission benefits if I pursued my degree part-time and continued working full-time (w/remission, total tuition sits at ~$52K). On the other hand, UMD is a relatively new program and already ranked top 25... With in-state tuition, it looks like it would cost ~$30K.

From the recent posts to this thread, I can tell all of us are nervous about post-grad debt; how are you all making your decision?? I've made pro/con lists for both schools, but am not sure how much weight I want to place on cost, program reputation, etc...

Has anyone who applied for the MS in public health microbiology and emerging infectious diseases at George Washington heard back? Whether it's a rejection or an acceptance, the wait is killing me.

I just got into Harvard as well! Does anyone know the timeline on the financial aid package?
Found this on the portal: "Beginning in mid to late February, applicants notified of their acceptance to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health should expect to receive an e-mail communication from the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) by the end of the following week regarding financial aid".

My biggest pro is program fit. So even though my first choice is ~$15,000 more expensive (that's assuming I can get in-state after a year, and does not include the increased cost of living) the program seems like a perfect fit for what I want. It will also give me access to new/more opportunities. I tend to take rankings with a huge grain of salt. For some people it means a lot and others really don't care, so I tend to put that last, but others might really want a top ranked program.

I was verified on 12/11 and was accepted 1/16. The wait killed me too - it's my top choice program, but financing it is the next challenge.

WOW! so happy for those who got accepted to Harvard MPH-65. Anyone heard from their MPH-GH65 credit program?

Can any current Harvard students tell me about the SM Global Health and Population or current Johns Hopkins students about the MSPH International Health in Social and Behavioral Sciences? Got a few options and I need to make a decision!

Hello! Has anyone else applied to JHU's MSPH/MI in Population, Family, and Reproductive Health? I submitted on 11/27 and have had the notice that my app was sent for review since around Christmas.

Does anyone have any insights about this program or when we'll hear back?

I heard back and was accepted. I am a bit stunned at the lack of information that I am getting about the program/admitted student days/or ANYTHING ELSE. They send out financial aid packages this summer, which is alarming.

Hello All!
About a week ago I received a scholarship offer from Berkeley from Kaiser Permanente. It's $5,000 a year for people dedicated towards working for under-served populations. Has anyone heard about this program? I can't find that much information about it.
Thanks!

Does anyone know what the process is like to defer enrollment to MPH/MSPH programs for a year, and how early one should get started?

Hi! I also applied to the MSPH in Population, family and Reproductive Health around a similar time (applied a little earlier but wasn't completed until Dec 30th because of transcript delays). I emailed the academic coordinator Jamie Haines last Wednesday and he/she replied that day saying they would give me a decision the next day. Sure enough, I was accepted the next afternoon! It might be worth a try shooting them an email 🙂 Good luck!

I remember looking at last year's version of this thread and feeling very intimidated about my chances because it seemed like everyone had killer stats. Thus, I'm posting my stats to hopefully inspire some anxious lurkers out there to shoot for the moon.

Do you also have a master's degree? Just wondering since I thought jhu and harvard's mph requires one?

Been a while since I've posted...

Got rejected from Harvard 3/2
Accepted to University of Illinois - Chicago (called me because they said their records are messed up?? on 3/4)
Accepted to Tulane University 3/5
Accepted to Yale 3/5

I am really trying to wait for finaid information from anyone before I get my heart set on a school.

I still haven't gotten my packet from BU (accepted 2/18). How long did it take for everyone else? Does anyone know how long it took to find out about any of the above and Emory?

Hey there. I also was accepted to BU on 2/18 and I received the package about 10 days later in Cali.

Attn Applicants to UMich:

I understand some of you were able to see your admissions decision on Wolverine access... where did you see it exactly?

@kiwiisafruit Harvard's 65-credit MPH and JHSPH's MPH programs don't require you to have a master's degree (or a medical degree). I think they do need you to have a certain number of years of work experience, though.

Please clear my doubts-

I am accepted in three universities including Tulane.
I have to pay a $30 acceptance fees.
Can we accept all the three Universities for now?
Or we have to accept only one?
If i accept one university can i accept the other one later?

Congrats on your well deserved acceptances! It seems like our interests as well as our options are similar. Right now I am trying to decide between JHU MPH/MBA, Harvard 65 Credit Global Health and Emory Global Health. I can't ignore the fact that JHU gives us an opportunity to have both MPH and MBA degrees in two years. It feels like the best call right not.
However, it is also the most expensive option. Do you know if we still have a chance to get merit scholarship from JHU? Or if they decided all already.

Congrats again! Let's stay in touch.

Second hear back from my schools, Drexel accepted with 30,000 dean's scholarship :hardy: ..........now only if Yale and San Diego would make up their mind, I could start planning

Attn Applicants to UMich: I understand some of you were able to see your admissions decision on Wolverine access... where did you see it exactly?

After you log in into wolverine access, click on application status right underneath the top "admission" heading. That should lead you straight to four different links, view application data, view credentials, view admission recommendation, and view decision.
