MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

Guys, any Intel on interviews at Penn?

I've seen several of you had Columbia interviews. How did they go? Any tips?

In regards to Columbia interviews--wouldn't worry too much about them! It's with a student so not super intense. I would just brush over the basic questions (i.e. Why this program, etc.) Mine was over in 20 minutes!

For those who attended last week, what did you guys think about Columbia's accepted students day?

Do you also have a master's degree? Just wondering since I thought jhu and harvard's mph requires one?
Hi there, I do not have a master's degree. The MSPH at Hopkins does not require that applicant's possess a master's but their MPH program might require one. The Hopkins MSPH is analogous to MPH degrees at other institutions; their MPH is an accelerated 11 month program for professionals with extensive experience in the field. Harvard has two MPH degrees: 45-credit vs. 65-credit. The 45-credit version requires a prior master's or other professional graduate degree while the 65-credit requires only a bachelor's degree.
Hope that helps!

For those accepted to Boston U. The website says from March 1st we can let them know our decision through the applicant gateway. But on the applicant gateway I don't see an option to accept / reject their offer. Has anyone tried yet?

That is awesome, congrats! If it is ok can you please share when you heard about admissions decision and scholarship decision. Just to have an idea 🙂

Got the 50% award too so I can answer your question! I was accepted Feb 25th and heard this morning. Initially when I was first accepted I was told I would hear from the OFA the week following admission but I guess they were a few days off with this estimate.

Congrats! It seems like it is early for me to get worried. I have received their admission decisions on 4th of March. I hope that I will also get good news in a week 🙂

I believe you will hear either way! 🙂 The email I got was full of other information such as external funding resources to look at, budgeting tools etc. So I think that everyone will receive a financial aid email and it will contain the specific offer they are giving you in addition to the general info. Good luck!! It was also updated on my FinAid account so just one more place for you to check haha

Got selected for in-state tuition (ROOST award) at UGA!

Now gotta decide, what do you guys think?

Cheap schooling --> only one faculty member is studying what I want to do only and the program is just general health promotion, not specific (UGA)
VERY expensive schooling --> everyone is studying what I want to study and the program is specific to what I want (Colorado- Physical Activity)

I got in about two weeks ago and received the Financial Aid email this morning

You can, but if you want your loans to be forgiven you have to make a certain number of qualifying payments. Paying extra will not count as another qualifying payment, so if you're waiting for them to be forgiven anyway it's a waste of money. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is how I interpreted it.
This is correct. Don't pay extra.

Got a 50% tuition scholarship at Harvard!
Congratulations! That's fantastic 🙂 May I check how you were notified? Thanks!

Edit: Never mind, I saw your reply to someone else who had a similar question. Congrats!! Yayeay! 🙂 🙂

Are there any fellow VMCVM MPH (Infectious Diseases concentration) students out there? I can't wait to start this Fall!

Congratulations !!!! When did you apply to Drexel?

Accepted to Hopkins MSPH in international health department!!! I applied in November. Now to make some serious decisions.
That's awesome! There are a lot of great faculty in that department What are you choosing between?

Congrats on your well deserved acceptances! It seems like our interests as well as our options are similar. Right now I am trying to decide between JHU MPH/MBA, Harvard 65 Credit Global Health and Emory Global Health. I can't ignore the fact that JHU gives us an opportunity to have both MPH and MBA degrees in two years. It feels like the best call right not.
However, it is also the most expensive option. Do you know if we still have a chance to get merit scholarship from JHU? Or if they decided all already.

Congrats again! Let's stay in touch.

Congrats to you too! And I'm super conflicted at the moment!

Re your questions i think from the live talk I participated in recently, the program coordinator suggests that fin aid and scholarships should be sent out within this couple of weeks. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

I'm currently leaning towards JHU for its joint degree program. Will learn more about the program and Baltimore by talking to current students. What are your thoughts/feeling so far?

I'm in the same situation, I'm going with expensive school with the specific program. It might cost more but I think it will be worth it for more/better networking and connections in the long run.

Has anyone heard about financial aid from Columbia..? I contacted them back when I was accepted and they said the process would begin in March but I haven't heard anything yet.

They said at admitted students day that the packages are not ready yet

For those who attended last week, what did you guys think about Columbia's accepted students day?

It was great- met current students and faculty members. Got to hear about the program as a whole and then broke off into our own departments and hear from multiple professors and researchers. In the SMS department, we got to do a cool exercise with a partner that is actually done in one of the classes at mailman. Pretty much the whole day was presentations after presentations with detail from every office at mailman- career services, practicum office, financial aid, housing, etc... So we really got to hear about all the school has to offer. Also got to sit with other accepted students as well as professors and current students. The day ended with a professor giving us a great 30 min lecture (as an example of how he lectures his classes, that sort of thing). It was pretty great and inspiring. Definitely solidified my interests in attending Columbia

It was really good. I think it really cleared up a lot of the doubts I had before with Columbia with it being such a huge program and trying to find good mentorship or building relationships with professors. But the faculty was great and we had so many different opportunities to interact with them and hear about their research and projects. We heard from an alum, and got to sit with current students. I'm really glad I went because you definitely get a feel for the school and the passion the faculty have. I went to a state school so I'm used to the large classroom sizes and having to put in work to get to know my professors better. And because of its size they have a lot of resources and connections/networks with their alums. From the career services presentation they said they provide lifelong career services even once you graduate. And it seemed like they really work hard to make sure that their students get to where ever they need to post grad, whether it be a phd program or a job. Just my 2 cents on my experience from student admitted day.

Has Emory sent out merit scholarships?
Yes, if you received a merit scholarship you would have received an email notification last week. But they have not sent out the need-based scholarships yet.

Hey, wow, you and I were in the same room! (I'm also in SMS) I really enjoyed the SMS breakout, getting to hear from a current student at lunch, and the professor's lecture at the end. It was very inspirational! However, I came off with a more negative impression about the other parts of the day. I thought the event was a touch disorganized and feel like they could've done a better job at arranging the speakers and presentations. Granted, fin aid and housing aren't exactly the most exciting topics but I also found the speakers before the departmental breakout to be... meh. I don't know if anyone else got that impression. Also, I'm disappointed we didn't get a tour of the campus or facilities. I was only on campus that one day so it would've been nice to be able to learn more about the campus and the area in general. I walked around a bit on my own afterward but because of security reasons, I wasn't allowed in most buildings.

@judy03 and @Jglamour have you guys decided on going there for sure?

I was hoping to get familiar with the area and the building as well. I felt like some of the presentations were a little rushed, just throwing data and info at once. I enjoyed the department breakout and everything after it more than I did the morning.

And this was my #1 school and I'm even more excited and want to say yes to the school. But I'm super nervous about the cost and living on loans. Especially since first semester during the core we won't be able to work. Tuition and NY is so pricey I'm visiting BU soon and I got a 12K scholarship from them so it might be a better choice for me. But I really hope that I somehow will be able to go to Columbia

My two cents about the Berkeley visit day:

I attended both the Diversity Day and the SPH Admitted Day. Diversity Day left something to be desired—I walked away from it not feeling so sold on the place. I think a big reason for this is because it was a school-wide day, so admitted students from across all the departments were there. It was interesting to see the mix, but it definitely didn't give me a sense of how things would be specifically at the SPH and the information was a lot more general.

SPH Admitted Day is where I fell much more in love. Jason Corburn gave a presentation about his work, and it was the first academic presentation that's excited me in years (at my job, I see a LOT of them). The faculty/staff speakers weren't afraid to talk about the challenges the university faced, and I appreciated their willingness to tackle it head on rather than divert our attention from it.

The current students were super friendly and accessible, and I had a few good discussions with people from the HSB concentration that ranged from them really loving it to them having some significant issues with it. I appreciated their candor and openness to discussing the school's strengths and weaknesses—I felt like I got a really balanced view of the program and school overall.

The campus is gorgeous—not even the rain could get me down. People kept talking about how "awful" the weather was, and I was like, hmm. If this is as awful as it gets, sign me up!

EDIT: If this seems like a ramble, I'm sorry! Back at work after a red-eye home last night, so feeling a little discombobulated. Happy to elaborate or provide more info about specific questions.

Congrats to you too! And I'm super conflicted at the moment!

Congrats on all your acceptances!
I spoke to the admissions team last week about merit scholarships but unfortunately I found out that I was not awarded one. I'm not sure if I will be able to handle the massive tuition for the MPH/MBA this year. I'm leaning towards requesting a defferal and starting in 2017.

After being accepted to Johns Hopkins, how long did people have to wait for financial aid info?

Did anyone attend Berkeley's visit day yesterday?
I did! I shared a little about it below. Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂 EDIT: And by below I mean below your post, above this one. That jet-lag and red-eye combo... :O

I feel you. It is a super expensive program. How did you spoke to them? Did you just send them an e-mail or gave a call? I was wondering if there is also a way for us to find out.

Not so good news--got a rejection email from Harvard today. 🙂 I'm happy for everyone who got accepted (which I did too). Good luck, guys. There are many paths to educational success. Hopefully I'd find mine soon. 🙂
I'm sorry. May I ask was it for SM or MPH-65 in global health?

Thanks for letting us know how your day went? May I ask, what specific questions did you asked and how did they answer your question?

I can understand that having so many good options make you confused. Yes I will also cross my fingers for a generous scholarship. However, I heard that both Harvard and Hopkins are quite selective with their scholarships.

To be honest I have been to Baltimore before. And it is not a bad city at all. And the MPH/MBA program looks amazing. Johns Hopkins have very strong relations with some of the biggest actors in the global health arena such as the WHO, Gates Foundation and World Bank. On the other hand, Harvard is known for being a great name for especially the private sector. Hopkins is also where I am leaning towards providing that I will find a way to fund it.

Congratulations!! If I may ask--when did you interview? I interviewed by phone last night and am just curious about how long the turnaround is on the "admission recommendation" post and ultimate decision.

Hi!! I interviewed on 02/15/16, attended the visit day on 2/19/16, and received my official acceptance on 02/24/16! I noticed my admission recommendation on 2/20/16, but I don't know how long it was up before I noticed it! GOOD LUCK!!!!!! 🙂

Got Wait Listed at Columbia for Health Management & Policy, but not too sad because I'm accepted to U-Mich which was my top choice yay!!! Has ANYONE heard from UPENN? i've been checking grad cafe religiously and they don't appear to be sending anyone anything! anxious to hear!

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but yes, I did hear from UPenn. I got an acceptance on 2/9. I also received an email from them saying they plan to do an admitted students day on April 1st.

Accepted to Harvard !!!!! MPH 65-credit Global Health program. I need help deciding among the other Global Health programs (UW, JHSPH, Emory). Anyone on the same boat?!
Congrats! When were you verified complete?

Congrats! Yes, deciding between JHSPH MSPH in International Health SBI Track vs. MPH 65-credit at Harvard....The more I examine their courses and programs the more confused and conflicted I become about which to choose :eyebrow:
