MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't believe I would be able to go out of state and the only schools I know of in Maryland with public health programs are JHU, GWU, and UMD. My chances at getting into any of them seem up in the air because I have low GRE scores. But I might have a good chance at UMD. Does anyone know about their MPH program? It is good and get as much feedback on the level of schools like GWU and JHU?

If you're looking for another in-state tuition option, there are actually two programs you can consider in Maryland. UMD in College Park has the School of Public Health, but UMD in Baltimore also offers an MPH (through the School of Medicine). Both are accredited, UMD-CP is an accredited School of Public Health while UMD-B (I think it's called UMB?) is an accredited public health program.

I don't know much about UMB but during one of the SOPHAS online virtual fairs I found out some info on UMD-CP. Here's the notes that I took away from that:
Classes from 4-6:45 so students can work during the day. They pair students with faculty based of research interests. Faculty helps them get jobs more than the career center does.

I do remember asking how many students were in the epidemiology MPH program and being kinda turned off by the fact that they gave me a small number for the number of students in both the epidemiology and biostatistics graduate programs (each programs' MPH + PhD students), it might've been somewhere around 30 people. This could certainly be a good thing, and it could allow for really great connections between students and faculty. The fact that they didn't straight up tell me how many first year epi MPH students they had in past years didn't make me feel great, but I think their other programs are certainly more popular than epi there (I want to say they're big on behavioral and community health).

That's really what I took away from both. I would certainly do some research on UMB and see if you can find some more information on it and contact UMD and see if you can get any more insight from them.

Congrats!! I also applied to CHS. Did you find out through the grad portal or through email?

Email!

I didn't realize that there was a way to check the portal.. Would that just be accessing your decision desk app again?

and thanks for letting me know, I hope to hear back from CHS soon!

Ah! Huh, not sure how I missed that. Thanks for telling me! Just wanted to see if the site said anything that the email did not. And good luck! I hope you get in!

I'm really disappointed in myself for not seeing this until after I sent an email asking about scholarships. I deferred as well but didn't receive a scholarship last year. I'm really hoping a year of some experience might boost my chances. Thanks for sharing the info!
Eh don't beat yourself up! They know we are super anxious!!

So I emailed Yale regarding the decision timeline, and I was told that we should expect decisions by the end of next week. For reference, my application was marked complete right before the holiday, so it was pushed into review in January.

I saw that a few people have received decisions from Drexel. I applied in Nov and I am still waiting. I email about decisions and they said it will be sent within the next 3 weeks.

In at UCLA CHS and Emory BSHE! *weeps with gratitude while eating a celebration donut*
When did you apply to both? And when did you get the forwarded email from Emory?? I'm so anxious to hear!! (I applied for the same departments as you but haven't heard yet!)

I'm not OP, but I didn't get an email - I checked my decision letter in OPUS. Other people were posting about it so I would check once every day and I guess today was the day for me

Is anyone that applied Global Health still waiting on Emory? I've seen a lot of people get decisions after my apply date so I want to be sure I'm not the only one waiting haha 🙁

I applied to UCLA on 12/1 and Emory on 1/4. I didn't get an email from Emory. There's an acceptance letter on my OPUS account. Good luck!

Thank you! I have the same app date for you for UCLA, but I messed up my application and paid the fee for the secondary without sending it. They emailed me (yay, that was really nice of them) in mid-December to let me know, so I think that's what may be holding me up. Future UCLA-appliers, tip: don't do that >.<

Did anyone apply to the Policy MPH at Emory? And have you received a decisions yet? I keep seeing a lot of emory acceptances but not really for Policy.

I applied for policy! Heard nothing yet. Also do not see anyone here getting into it... so I have no clue if they are sending decisions for that concentration :/ but always checking OPUS in hope lol

Did anyone apply to the UW COPHP program and hear anything about when to expect decisions for regular admission (those who applied by 1/15)? They offer very little info on their website and I hate to pester their one program contact who I'm sure is inundated...

Any opinions on BU vs. NYU?? Help :dead:😵
BU for sure! Their career services are so active, and they always take care of you like their own. You'll have no trouble finding a good job after graduation. Also, I do believe BU is at a higher rank for MPH, not that rankings matter at the end of the day.
I'd have to agree BU for sure! Of course only you can make the decision on what's best for you. But BU's communication has been amazing from my experience, they offer the opportunity to obtain multiple certificates, and their school is well established. NYU's school is fairly new (although I think their program has been around longer than the school), I don't know if they offer certificates, and their course offerings are very limited compared to BU (BU offers classes with pretty specific topics that interest me while NYU does not). Ultimately I decided not to apply to NYU after I read some pretty scathing reviews of their program on a different thread in this forum. I think the posts were from 2014 though and a lot could have changed so definitely keep seeking advice and researching both schools before making a decision!

I got into Emory-policy about 1.5 weeks ago. I did not receive an email, just a decision letter on Opus.

Update for those that applied to UNC HB and haven't heard back, Johnston King said that decisions should be coming out by the middle of next week, I imagine that is the same for the other programs too. *fingers crossed!*

Anyone hear back from...

- UNC MPH-RD
- JHU MSPH-RD
- Colorado Anschutz MPH Community & Behavioral Health

If so, what time did you submit/was it verified?

Still waiting on Emory Global Health (although app was only sent to dept. 1/24) as well.

Trying to figure out how many Dietetic Internships I need to apply to next week because I haven't heard back from anyone except UTHealth (accepted).

just checked OPUS and saw an acceptance for Emory Global Health, so I'm sure they are sending out more decisions today!

Have people heard from the U of M epidemiology department? I've seen a lot of HMP and HBHE people on this thread, but not epi.... I was marked complete in December and I still haven't heard anything 🙁

I got a decision from Colorado CBH on 2/3. I submitted my application 9/22 and received a confirmation email from them on 9/29. Since this was way, way before any of their deadlines, my guess is I was in the first round of released decisions.

I have only seen Hospital & Molecular Epi acceptances on here. However, during last week's webinar, there were students who had heard back from the other 3 epi tracks offered by the department. I'm guessing more decisions will be sent out next week!

columbia just sent me an update on my decision. decisions might be out.

Same here: I'm in! This is for Epi with a certificate in Global Health. My timeline (though it's like the same for everyone at this point): Applied 11/29; Verified 12/9; Complete 12/7; Accepted 2/8. Full stats on page 7.
