MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also got this invitation. I am likely to apply because of my interest and background in Global Health. The additional courses appeal to me given my interests.

The courses appeal to me, but I am not sure how interested I am in doing an internship outside the US. I think most HMP people got the invite. I didn't even know they had the GHMP program at Michigan

I am DYING to hear from UCLA and Cal. I live in the Boston area but both my partner and I are from California and we'd like a good reason to quit our jobs and finally go home. I was accepted to BU via email on 2/2. I was told I received a merit scholarship but won't know how much until I get the packet in the mail. I've seen a few people post they're in for Epi at UCLA (congrats ya'll!), but has anyone else in a different department heard back from there yet?

3 years @ Teach For America
Economics and Political Science Undergrad
+60% on V and Q, AW 4.5
Accepted (in order of preference) @ UNC-Leadership Track, Vanderbilt-Policy, GWU-Policy, Northwestern, UCLA, Loyola Chicago, UVA, Florida
Waiting (and top choices for me in order): UC-Berkeley MPP/MPH, Harvard MPH, UT Austin MPA/MPH, UIC MBA/MPH

Still really eager to hear back from Berkeley--if anyone has reached out or has an idea of when decisions are released that would be clutch.

My portal looks that way as well.
same for me! I got an e-mail from the Director of Grad studies early last week welcoming me into the program but the OPUS portal still says "Your admission decision is not available at this time."

also, haven't heard from UCLA or UCBerkeley yet :-/ I applied for HPM.

Anxiously waiting for Columbia and Harvard....

The pay admissions deposit in OPUS generally means you've been accepted. Congrats! Your decision will probably upload later. Plus BSHE is sending out emails later this week to all those whose apps they received by a certain time!

I have that as well, but mine is for epi. I emailed Emory and they said decisions should be posted this week or next week. TBH their lack of communication has been really off putting.

Don't have any links in OPUS but just received an email with the title "Welcome to Rollins!!" from the Humphrey Fellowship Coordinator. I think I will take this as an acceptance. So excited! It's my first acceptance and I could cry from relief!!

Edit: forgot to mention that it was a pretty personal email as well- so I am unable to convince myself that it was sent in error. :soexcited:

Same, it's been like that for a while for me. Hopefully it means something positive haha

I'm feeling the same way about GW! I asked a week ago for employment statistics, and they haven't responded.....for reals?

I found it super, super weird that I couldn't find employment statistics anywhere on GW's website. Thought it was just me!

I'm still waiting and wishing for my decision here too!!! :xf:

i can only speak on the 2016 timeline. I was verified at Michigan HBHE 12/29/15 and accepted the first week of march 2016. (I am a deferred Michigan student). When I got my acceptance last march, I got my Deans scholarship then. Deans scholarship is completely department-funded-- so decisions are highly variable.

Michigan has so many applicants... just expect to wait a minute for their decisions. From what I've seen and experienced, decisions are usually the sent Thursday's or fri afternoons.

Financial aid packages are completely determined on when you applied for fafsa. I've never met or talked to a grad student that wasn't given enough funding. A lot of Michigan scholarships are due 2/15... so look quick and apply! Hope this helps.

Heard back from BU the same day as you! I got in for HPM at UCLA on 2/1 (was first notified by my department, then received the official UCLA Graduate Application Decision email on 2/4)

Opinion time! Does calling departments to ask about the admissions timeline make you look bad? What about for a school you've already called once like a month ago?

I've contacted when their timeline has been unclear (Yale for instance first told me between December and March, which was not helpful. I also asked Columbia because they said the first or second week of February-and I was curious if they considered this week the first week or February or last week 😛). I try not to contact an university more than twice regarding a timeline.

In my opinion, we have a right to know, within reason, when a decision will be released. This is a huge investment (monetary and time wise) and as the deadline to decide approaches (less than 2 months for some schools), it doesn't give much time to consider our options.

On the other hand, admissions only has so much control over when decisions are released. I think if you're asking them on a weekly or bi-weekly basis that's a bit too much. (Unless it is late march or something, in which case I wouldn't blame you!)

Congrats on getting accepted to both! I know Community Health Science is one of the larger departments at UCLA so I'm sure it's taking longer to hear back than HPM and Epi but I am so anxious to hear back.

Honestly, I did this just to check in and see since I was unreasonably checking my email all day. They never asked my name or anything, and were super nice and apologetic it was taking so long. This was UMich HBHE, they again stated it was due to reviewers being away on vacation longer than expected. She said they hope for us to start hearing within the next few weeks. Not that it really helps my anxiety at all haha

I deferred my admissions last year due to unexpected financial problems. It also didn't help that both my husband and I were starting MPH at the same time, taking so many loans, so one of us had to work. I reapplied this year, hoping for better scholarships this time around. I also only applied to the accelerated programs, to make up for the one year delay. Anyways, here goes:

Undergrad School: Foreign medical school
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 4.0
Major/Minor: Medicine
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): 154 V/ 150 Q / 5 A (didn't improve since last year)
Experience/Research (please, be brief): 6 publications in medical journals, practiced medicine for 3 years
Special factors??? Co-founded an NGO, which serves poverty-stricken communities in South Asia; previously volunteered for other non-profits, such as Red Cross, Sandhani, etc; speak 5 languages fluently

Interested in: Global Health, Health Policy
Applied: JHU, Harvard, Columbia, Oxford (all by 12/1)
Accepted: JHU (2/4)
Rejected: Columbia (2/9)
Waitlisted:

I'm eagerly waiting for the other schools to give their decisions. So nervous! I don't want to say I have preferences since they're all great schools, and I'll happily attend any of them. Ultimately, I will make my decision based on whichever ends up costing me the least.

Has anyone applied to (and heard back from) UW Seattle?

I applied to their MPH program + their coordinated program in dietetics. I had a phone interview on 1/11 with the dietetics program, but haven't heard anything since from either department...

Hey, yea I heard back end of last week after applying to the healthcare management program in January. They contacted me to set up an interview/visit day on Feb. 24th; I think the visit day is mandated by the department I applied to though, not the whole MPH program

Did you apply to the MPH program at JHU? And when was your application verified by SOPHAS?

Good to know! It sounds like they might just be a little behind most schools in sorting things out for next year. Good luck on your interview/visit day! I'm not sure where you will be coming from, but I live an hour and a half outside of Seattle and love the PNW.

Just got my first rejection from UMich, but I'm not tooooo sad about it. I don't think I was going to end up there, and it at least game me thicker skin for potential upcoming rejections 🙂

Still waiting to hear back from ETSU and UMass. Hopefully I'll hear soon!

FYI!

Just spoke with U of Michigan HBHE department. Scholarship decisions are being made this week and we should hear next week.
I'm really disappointed in myself for not seeing this until after I sent an email asking about scholarships. I deferred as well but didn't receive a scholarship last year. I'm really hoping a year of some experience might boost my chances. Thanks for sharing the info!

I don't know of anyone who has heard back from their MPH programs. Since they said that we would receive a decision by "late February," I figured they would be one of the last schools (given their Dec 1 deadline) rolling them out.
