MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to clarify , this is for Columbia.......did everyone know whether this financial aid survey went out to everyone?

I definitely think it is supposed to (I remember some people did not get it last year), it might be whether you put on your application you were interested in financial aid? I don't think it is any indication of admissions so I wouldn't worry about it, and you could email to ask about it or wait to get accepted and see if they need further info to get financial aid 🙂

Sorry I went back through the forums and I know some people got it later than others last year!!

Interesting, last year I heard not everyone got that survey. And you are right it's not an indication but would be interesting to hear more from others.

I will say I went back through and the 5 people I checked that initially got it were all accepted, but people got it later than others!! 🙂

Anyone else apply to Yale's Environmental Health Sciences program? I know they're super competitive and I'm pretty sure there were only 11 students in last year's EHS class. It's one of my top choices and I haven't heard anything yet... the anticipation is killing me.

Good luck to everyone still waiting on decisions!

I never received that email last year but was accepted and received aid.

Same! They said we'd likely hear back the first or second week of February.

Do you think "first week of February" means next week, since Feb 1st falls on a Wednesday, or the week following? lol.

That timeline is for Columbia admission? If so, my guess is we hear back between Wed Feb 1 and Fri Feb 10.

Anyone have thoughts on 2 year generalist MPH @ Penn vs 1 year Health Policy and Clinical Practice MPH @ Dartmouth (assuming tuition costs were the same)?

Generalist is a bit more versatile, and Penn has a reputable name in medicine/healthcare (1st med school in the country), so it's easy to imagine the Penn degree becoming more valuable as time goes on (increases in funding/program expansion coming next year alone). Dartmouth is a lot more intimate, you will know everybody, and everybody will know you. It has a solid rep in medicine/healthcare also, and is filled with a larger percent of students that are professionals in their field. If total costs are the same (which isn't likely) I'd go Penn, but I imagine Dartmouth is around 1/2 the total cost of Penn, and is only a year long, so it's probably the wiser decision overall. Penn will offer a bit more research/internships opportunities tho (City of Phili, Hospital associated with medical school, Perelman Med research, etc.). Obviously, both are impressive to the layman because of the Ivy brand, so prestige isn't a factor to consider, nor will there be a significant difference in external opportunities unrelated to public health, if you ever choose to make a lateral move to another field (social justice, politics, etc.).

Did you recieve any additional information about the event? I emailed a few people and they are unsure about the details.
On campus stuff all day Friday and off campus optional events Saturday! You should join the Facebook page!

has anyone gotten into michigan HMP yet? how long after your interview/visit day did you hear back?
I am still waiting on a response and I had mine two weeks ago. I thought getting it done early would result in a quicker response - so much for that theory! 🙂

Congrats! Can I ask what your creds/experience are?

Thanks!

Sure, I have an undergrad degree from a top ten school (GPA ~3.5), and an MD from a large research university. Test scores in the top 10 percentile. I have some clinical research experience and have worked in the pharmaceutical industry.

Thanks for the excellent reply.

As far as tuition goes, by my calculations, it should be very close to the same. UPenn is ~70K in tuition+fees over the 2 years while Dartmouth is ~66K in tuition+fees for one year. These numbers are obviously pretty close. Financial aid and scholarships (such as the 15K from Dartmouth) may tilt the balance one way financially, but in gross terms, they're pretty close cost wise.

Between the two, it's really a question of living expenses, job prospects that interest me (such as public policy work or management consulting firms), and program style/quality. The first question is, how is Penn different in these areas over Dartmouth? The second question is whether any advantage over a lifetime that Penn may provide beats out the extra year of earning potential that the shorter program at Dartmouth provides?

Good to know, that was my recollection. I want to know whether those who got rejected also got one.

You just dashed my hopes! Just kidding. Glad you provided the input. Guess it's just something they send out to everyone to get feedback.

Hi everyone, I know I'm super late in the game but here are my stats:

Brief background: International student, completed undergrad in US and aspiring MD
Undergrad School: private school in the East
Undergrad GPA: 3.34 (SOPHAS 3.5) - was on Dean's honor list on 4 occasions
Major (&Minor): Biology w/ Minor in Biostats
GRE or Other Test Score (if applicable): 147 V, 151 Q, 4.5 AWA (I really want to retake this test this Feb (what do you think?))
Experience/Research:
- 1+ years of undergrad research with pub
- Peace corp volunteer 3months
- research assistant volunteer at NIH 3months
- volunteer at HIV/AIDs program 6 months
- lots of volunteer experience locally and internationally
- currently work in a pharma company for 2+ years

LORs: 1 strong LOR from research mentor and 3 from undergrad professors

Interested in:
Epi, infectious diseases and global health issues
Applied: JHU (1/13 - 1st choice), GW (1/9), College park (1/9 - 2nd choice) and UM balt (1,9)

Haven't heard back from any school but do you think I should retake the GRE? If I do, would my higher score (I'm confident it will be higher) replace my 1st scores even though the priority deadline has passed for JHU?

All suggestions are very much appreciated and welcome!

and a HUGE congrats to those who've gotten their acceptance letters!

Bumped! Anyone with any suggestions on if I should retake the GRE?

That's awesome. I really can't answer that, but you could try getting nosey with each school's administration/career center and see if that helps in making your decision.

Disclaimer: I'm bias towards Penn bc I've done a lot more personal research on the school, and was never a fan of Dartmouth's class size, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

Hi! If those are the only schools you still plan on applying to, don't bother retaking your GRE because I don't believe they'll be replaced in the system. On the other hand, if you choose to apply to another few programs (God bless you, rolling admissions!) I'd consider retaking it to get well above that 50th percentile on Verbal and maybe improve Quant score as well. A lot of programs I've seen have stated that they prefer GRE scores over that magical 50th percentile mark. On the other hand, you've got examples like the lovely @jl_murray up there who got into Dartmouth (congrats!!) **with aid!! with an admittedly not-so-stellar GRE score but a solid GPA and experience. It comes down to your confidence in your experience/extracurriculars/GPA, which imo look pretty strong.

Anyone else accepted to Yale's HCM program? I would love to talk to anyone else considering it!

Me! I haven't heard back from my other top choices but Yale's program seems great and I'd also love to talk through it when the time comes. Are you planning on going to visit days/generally visiting?

Just checked Harvard -- the page that used to have decisions info is now missing for me... The only options on the top bar are now "Course Search", "Other Resources", "Other Links". The first one used to be "my harvard" I think, but now that's gone.

Can I also join in?
Yes, I added you! I am planning on going to one of the admitted students days on either April 3rd or 10th! Are you?

Would you mind if I join? Yale HCM is also a top choice, curious to what you guys think!
I am trying to figure out how I added acdual to our private convo, because for some reason I can't find it to add you as well! I will start a new convo with all four of us if we can't figure it out!

Same! it was working for me yesterday

Thank you for your response! I thought Dartmouth was a reach for me but ill definitely retake the GRE and apply there. Thanks again!

Accepted into BU today - the turnaround for the application was a lot faster than I thought it would be. I'm not too sure when/ how they send out their financial aid stuff, there wasn't any mention of it in the acceptance email.
When did you apply? I'm trying to guess when I will hear back

Congrats!
Did you see "An error occurred during the use of the query "HU_MYCHAN_ADMIT_LETTER" at your my.harvard page before? Thanks!

Thanks!

I got into Harvard's 45-credit Epidemiology program. Super excited!

Hi! Yesterday, mine said this too. But today, this page was missing and directed me to the course search. Do you have similar experience?

Has anyone checked the my.harvard page today? My admissions decision letter section says:
  • Error executing pagelet.
    Detailed error description:

An error occurred during the use of the query "HU_MYCHAN_ADMIT_LETTER".

    Does everyone's say this?

Yesterday mine said this, then earlier today it changed to MYCHAN_APPLICANT_LETTER, and now the page to view decisions is gone ha.

They must be having some internal errors. I really wanna know if anyone saw it say MYCHAN_REJECT_LETTER lol....

It's gone for me too. That site is super glitchy.
