MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also can I wait to be accepted to fill out financial information for Emory?

Not sure about when Emory stops accepting students, I don't think they have a firm deadline on that end as it appears to be somewhat rolling admissions? It can never hurt to apply to more but double check deadlines!

You definitely do not need to fill out the financial aid thing before you are admitted, but you do need to fill it out before their financial aid deadline (I think it is listed somewhere in the portal)!🙂

Hey guys, I'm a first-year MPH student at Emory University in the Global Health department. If anyone wants to pick my brain and gain an inside perspective please feel free. I remember how crazy and stressful this time was for me last year but it will be over before you know it! Congrats on all the acceptances and good luck to those still waiting!

Hey Everyone,

So I've been stalking this forum back since my pre-med days but I just created an account today for two reasons. I need your help and want to share some inspiring news for all the underdogs out there.

I recently received an email from Columbia's Mailman school, about a courtesy extension of the deadline to Feb 15th. I initially didn't apply because life caught up with me but I thought about applying again since it would be nice to have an option close to home if I got in. Does anyone know if this is worth it? Are they really looking for more candidates or do they just want to seem more competitive with bigger numbers.

Lastly here are my stats, I really didn't think I had a shot but god/the powers that be were on my side 🙂

Undergrad School: Boston University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 2
.87 (thank you biochem and calc 2 and all the other fun ones)
Major/Minor: Biology and Public Health Minor
SOPHAS other/public health/socio-behavioral: 3.5

GRE (including date taken) Date: 11/12/2016; V 158 (80th %) Q 152 (47th %) W 4 (59th %)

I wrote a killer personal statement (poured my heart and soul into) addressed my grades and stated why and what I wanted my MPH.
I also had a strong LORs from public health prof. whose grad level courses I did well in, and from my program director for Health Leads who really believed in me .

Interested in: Global Health - development/program design/social entrepreneurship
Applied:
BU, GWU, Columbia (maybe?), Emory
Accepted: (1/12) GWU, Emory (TODAY!!!!!! - 01/31)
Rejected: N/A
Waitlisted: N/A

Hey everyone, I've been checking this thread a lot and see that there's a ton of helpful information on here so thought I'd join in 🙂 I'm thrilled to have heard back from 5/6 programs already and even more excited that I've gotten into NYU and GW, which I feel like I my decision will ultimately come down to. I really thought these schools were reaches but have been pleasantly surprised a lot in the last couple of months.

Undergrad School: Binghamton University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.46/ 3.76
Major/Minor: Human Development/ Health & Wellness Studies minor
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Date: 9/16/16 V:153 (60th%), Q: 145 (20th%--awful, I know!), W: 5.5 (98th%)
Experience/Research (please, be brief): 3 years as a group fitness instructor, 2 years working as a nutrition assistant with the school's registered dietitian, executive board member of health & fitness club, summer internship with clinical nutrition team at a local hospital network, summer internship with a registered dietitian who oversees school meal programs & health outreach for 75 local schools, member educator volunteer at a CSA farm-share program, and health & wellness programming volunteer with 3rd grade students in a food desert.
Special factors??? I think my experience and LOR (5) really helped me out. I've formed strong connections with many successful public health figures in the last few years and I think that made up for my admittedly low quant score.
Interested in: Health Promotion & Community Health
Applied: (applied to all 11/22/16) GWU, NYMC, Stony Brook, Hofstra, Columbia, NYU
Accepted: Hofstra w/ scholarship (12/6), NYMC (12/15), GWU (12/20), Stony Brook (12/28), NYU (w/$20k scholarship!!) (1/24)
Rejected: N/A
Waitlisted: N/A

To clarify, this is the ScM, not the MPH, correct? Like @brown1764 said, that seems problematically late.
Yes, for the ScM (I don't really know anyone in the MPH department). She may also just be referencing the 5th year program, but I'm pretty sure they review all of the ScM applications at the same time (considering they both have a deadline on 3/31). I was pretty disappointed when she told me.

I did ask one of my friends who is in the program and she said she heard back at the end of March last year.

Ugh the wait is killing me. And sorry guys- I hope I didn't make the stress worse. I know you are all as anxious to hear back as I am and wanted to let you know.

Hello, everyone, I am an international student who attended undergrad in the US and thought I would share my stats:

Undergrad School: Ivy (Class of 2016)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.66 (SOPHAS)/ Public Health related courses GPA (4.0)
Major/Minor: Economics Major and History Minor
GRE: (including date taken) 163V (92nd percentile), 151 Q (43rd percentile:arghh:) , 5 W (93rd percentile)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):

-Worked all four years at college with Student Disability Services providing administrative assistance to students with various disabilities.
-Currently a field research associate for a women's empowerment and development project in rural Ethiopia ( would have completed 1 year at time of enrollment)
  • Research is currently focused on women and child nutrition and involves several randomized control trials and a census covering 22,000 households.
- President of a cultural club on campus that helped raise funds for health purposes in several African countries.

Special factors???
- Ethiopia was (and is currently) in a State of Emergency at the time of my application. Peak tension was in November/December when I had to fly to my home country to take the GREs, hence my low quant score.
-Internet access limited and as a result have submitted most of my applications very close to the deadlines and sometimes even after the deadlines have passed.
- 3 LORs from professors from UnderGrad. One fairly well-known health economist, one well-known agricultural economist, one professor I worked with in Undergrad and currently working for in women's empowerment project.

Interested in: Global Health/Health Policy and Management
Applied: Harvard, Emory, GWU, Columbia, Yale, JHU (MPP), Oxford (MSc Global Health Science), Brown (yet to apply), NYU (yet to apply), LSHTM (yet to apply), LSE (yet to apply), UCL(yet to apply).
Accepted: None yet submitted applications too late I guess.
Rejected:

Fairly worried about my GRE scores as my quantitative scores in college were not stellar (B- in calculus but an A in statistics (however cross-listed as an economics course so not included in my quant score in SOPHAS GPA breakdown) but I am hoping that my current experience and letters of recommendation will be strong enough to get me into some decent programs. Have I been too ambitious?

Congratulations to everyone on their acceptances so far! The wait is killing me.

Just received an email from Columbia asking me to provide my syllabus for econometrics and statistics courses! I guess they do look closely at all applications after all.

Also decided to apply to JHU MSPH in International Health. The applications are still open so why not, hey?

I totally understand the impulse to want to correct an application or send additional information. I would caution you against it, however, unless you have already been rejected by multiple schools. Writing an explanation may highlight a flaw adcoms may not have initially given much weight. And sending an explanation much later than your application may make it seem like you are insecure about your credentials for the program. They will see from your resume and statement that you had other priorities than academics, and as long as your GRE scores and personal statement are solid, they will understand that you are committed to doing your best work during your MPH. If you really feel strongly about explaining your low grades, I would contact someone in the department to which you applied and ask, in general, if additional explanations for poor grades really improve someone's chance of admission.

Thanks for your response. Insecure is accurate, ha ha. My concern is really that my main money-making jobs during college were not anything I would list on a resume or talk about (mostly waitressing) so without an explanation it might look like I just couldn't handle the academics even though I had the time, plus I've heard before that if you have a flaw in your application you should mention it in your statement, but I didn't want to use valuable word count to talk at length about that. I'm meeting with some advisors anyway so I'll probably just ask them then. Thanks for the reassurance though! I am hoping that my experience and GRE demonstrate my commitment.

A little late to the game...applied in the fall all my applications were verified by October/November ish.

Undergrad School: The University of Vermont (UVM)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: ~3.2
Major/Minor: Nutrition and Food Sciences
GRE - 156V (72%), 156Q (63%), 4.5 AWA (82%) taken August 16th, 2016

Experience/Research :
~Supervisor and head supervisor experience with on campus jobs
~2 years medical ICU Volunteer
~ED Scribe for the last year
~Multiple scholarships/grants at undergrad
~Letters of rec come from 1 PhD chemistry professor, and 2 PhD nutrition professors also had one from my immediate supervisor for my on campus job
~Nutrition Care Lead for local program distributing fresh vegetables, fruits, and meats to families in need
~Part of many campus clubs and organizations (some related to the medical field and some not so much)

Interested in: Global health and Epi as well as premedical school degrees like medical sciences since my GPA isn't so hot :/ but I'm really passionate about working as a physician globally so I figure get my MPH and get good grades, get some experience and then apply to osteopathic medical school. I think that I'm more interested in straight MPH degrees but we'll see what happens.
Applied: NYU Cross Continental Program, The Ohio State University, BU (MPH and medical sciences), Tufts (MPH and biomedical sciences), University of Minnesota, UMich, McGill, UVM medical sciences (would then apply to MPH for a 2 year, 2 degree program), Ichan School at Mount Sinai, StonyBrook, LECOM (medical sciences), PCOM (medical Sciences)
Accepted: OSU, BU MPH (+20k$), UMN, Ichan, StonyBrook, Tufts MPH, Interview at NYU on February, the 13th (this I think is my top choice), UMich (Feb 9th)
Rejected: None (yet)
Waitlisted: Tufts MBS
Hoping some more financial aid is on the way!!

Nice!

Recommended for admission for Michigan's HPM program. Only on Wolverine. Subject to verification etc. That's a very quick turnaround, I interviewed this past Friday!

And now I'm off work for a week 🙂

You too!! I'm hoping that the interview goes well, I visited the campus and met with the staff and absolutely LOVED it and I really think it's my top choice...I was ecstatic when I got the interview

I wanted to know my chances! I'm pretty nervous. I also had a second question-even though SOPHAS reviewed my transcripts, etc. in November, I applied to programs pretty late, by January-some early and some more recently -but before the priority deadline for most programs-being on rotation and working full time makes it hard :/ Would this hurt me in the application review process?

Congrats on your acceptance! On their website, there is a "Visit Rollins" page, in which they list timings for the admissions information session: February 24th and April 21st. Unfortunately, I'll be unavailable on those dates, so I might just go for the guided tour (nearly any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday). I haven't found the FB page either, so I'm not sure if it has been created yet.

Accepted for Colorado. Global Health at UC Anschutz. No news or info on the email about financial aid or funding. Hope they send out that info later.

How long did it take them to review and give their decision?

Has anyone heard back from Hopkins's MSPH program in Health Policy & Management? I've been seeing a lot of people hearing back from the MSPH program, but I haven't heard anything yet and was just wondering if it was a department-by-department kinda thing. I applied way back in 11/2016, so I'm getting antsy 😛

I emailed the person in the HPM department who sent me my acceptance info and she said there will be an open house for admitted students on March 30-31st! She said that admissions should contact us soon with more details

I got the same thing.... can I interpret this pretty much as an acceptance?

I *think* so? I'm certainly taking it as an acceptance.

Bit torn between BU & Michigan - I'm out of state, so it's going to be expensive either way, but Boston is lovely and I've been to the city. I've not even been close to Ann Arbor

Has anyone heard from Colorado for Community & Behavioral Health at Ansuchtz? I am hoping that decisions are going program by program and that's why I haven't heard.

Just got into Emory for Global Epi! Against my better judgment, I decided to check OPUS and my decision letter was there. My timeline: Emory (Applied 12/9; Received 12/28; Sent for Review 1/18; Accepted 2/1). Full stats on pg. 7, brief in signature.

Has anyone heard from Colorado for Community & Behavioral Health at Ansuchtz? I am hoping that decisions are going program by program and that's why I haven't heard.

I'm applying for Maternal & Child Health but I haven't heard either! I know they definitely do it by program there so I wouldn't worry at all 🙂

I actually DID list things like waitressing, bartending, skybox serving, etc on my SOPHAS app so admissions could see the amount of hours I was working per week on top of school. By adding this experience to your SOPHAS app, you won't have to detract from your word count on your personal statement. Despite my circumstances, I had an okay GPA so I didn't think it was worth it to explain these things to admissions because like @wwmmkk said, I didn't want to unnecessarily draw their attention to that. I don't see your job experience (albeit money making job experience) as a flaw at all. Plus you have way better GRE scores than me!

Has anyone heard back from UC Davis?
Have any Davis applicants had a change to their application online? Mine still says "submitted". Kind of expecting it to at least say "verified" or something

Hey everyone! I got an email from a professor in Epi at Columbia who assists in admissions. She was asking for volunteers for an unrelated thing, but in the email she said, "The first batch of letters will go out to accepted applicants at the end of this week." Just thought you would like to know that lol

Wow this is super awesome! Thanks for the tip! I think someone else on this thread mentioned first responses coming in late next week. Do they get delivered in batches?

Is ranking particularly important for school programs? I'm very drawn to Yale University but its currently ranked #14 while other schools such as BU are ranked higher.

The difference in ranking between the two isn't too big, as I see that BU is ranked #10 according to US News. I think most people on here are going to answer "no" to your question, and that it depends on how affordable the tuition is as well as how well your research interests match up. Both are obviously great schools, but you'll have to work to make connections and utilize the available resources in either scenario.

Rankings don't matter as much as many people think. What you make of your education makes the most difference in your career outlook. Regardless though, I'm sure Yale is a good program. It's one of the most famous universities in the world.

Anyone heard things about Vanderbilt's MPH? I've noticed that their cohorts are very small (21 people for the class of 2017), and only 4 people are in the health policy track currently. Just thought I'd ask around to see if anyone knew/heard anything

I think there's one big batch at the start and it's kind of random after that. Don't freak out if you don't hear anything by the end of this week. I was accepted on 2/25 and it felt like eternity had passed by the time I got that notification haha. Not getting a letter early on isn't indicative of anything.

I think Yale is a great school. I've heard very good things about their program!

New York City is a bit interesting because there are so many MPH programs here. I'm working at the NYC DOH right now and around 8 out of 10 hires will be from Columbia's MPH program. This is for internship, practicum, and full-time opportunities. I really don't know if that has to do with rankings, but if you're considering going to school in NY, I would keep that in mind if your long term goals are to work for the city.
