MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I didn't apply Epi, but your GPA is the same as mine and your GRE scores are quite close to mine as well. I got into Hopkins with those scores, so I think you'll be okay! Also, you've got some great experiences 🙂

Rumor is that Columbia will be releasing the first round of decisions today. I'm personally waiting on bated breath for Harvard as well!

Yay thank you for the encouragement! 🙂 Congrats on JHU!!
Ahh ok so you're saying I should refresh my email every 5 minutes today? Noted. 😛

Does anyone have any ideas for the type of questions they will ask in an interview for a global health MPH program?

Hello,
Compared to other schools of public health, I personally think that Northwestern does not have a strong MPH program or noticeable faculty members. I am strongly interested in the Health Policy and Management track, but they do not have one. So I applied for a generalist option. Also, the living expenses (rent fee, foods, and so on) at Chicago campus look exorbitant for me. But it is a one-year program from a stellar school, which may appeal to some applicants.

The decision is up to you!

I agree! I'm also really interested in HPM/HCM as I've applied to that for other programs as well as MHA programs. However, Northwestern is a phenomenal school, and I wonder if we just don't see rankings/more information about their work because they are a departmental program within their school of medicine rather than a program through a SPH. Chicago is definitely expensive, but the opportunities are great, and their med campus is located next to a lot of major hospitals, if thats what you're interested in getting in to after graduating. After researching what I could find, it feels like their program is much more catered towards current medical students and working professionals that want to add an MPH to their resume and move up in their place of work, neither of which apply to me. It is going to be a difficult decision!

Has anyone heard from BU's MS in Epi program? I've seen acceptances from BU and I haven't been able to tell if they're for the MPH or MS programs.

I applied and haven't heard. I asked the MS coordinator and he said by the end of January/first week of February at the latest.

Anybody else that went to Rollins BSHE Webinar get that "Thank You" email? My heart lept into my throat >.<

Anyone know when these programs might release their decisions based on past years? I'm getting so anxious!
I'm also scared my GPA will hurt me - thoughts? I do have a safety lined up, so I'm okay in that regard (long story short it's a Bio PhD 😕).
Hi There!

I literally had almost the same stats - 3.3 GPA and GRE: 161 (Verbal) 166 (Quantitative) 5.5 (Analytical Writing) and I got into Yale, Johns Hopkins, and UC Berkeley. I think you'll be fine 😉.

BTW everyone - I believe Columbia is only responding today (or maybe next Friday) to folks who applied by the priority deadline (12/1). Anyone who applied after that will probably hear back later in February or March.
I thought priority was 1/17

I submitted my SOPHAS application today!!

Undergrad School: Top 5 liberal arts college, 2012 grad
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.4, according to SOPHAS. My calculations come out to 3.5. Lower division is 3.15, upper is 3.64. I don't know my major GPA as my school took a somewhat alternative grading approach.
Major/Minor: Biology (General) / Educational Studies
GradGPA: 3.81 (I agree with SOPHAS on this.)
Grad Studies: earned Masters in Education through an alternative program at a large public university, 2013 grad
GRE: 168V (98th percentile), 155M (60th percentile), 5.5AW (98th percentile), taken May 2016
Experience/Research:
- in college: program coordinator for sexual assault prevention program, student-athlete with many leadership positions, several campus jobs
- completed 1 year AmeriCorps service teaching middle school science in an urban district
- taught middle & high school science for 3.5 school years, including 2 years designing and teaching a public health class to grades 10-12

LORS: 1 undergrad professor (my advisor, I did ~1 year Educational Studies research with her), 1 grad professor/student teaching supervisor, 1 professional acquaintance (a mentor I've known for ~4 years who is well-respected in the social work world and who helped me choose public health over social work)

Special factors
- openly queer and transgender; interested in LGBTQ health specifically

Interested in: I applied only to community and behavioral health programs, but I am also interested in epidemiology of infectious disease (HIV), sexual/reproductive health, and biostat as it applies to those fields. My ultimate goal is to work in a community health setting that seeks to improve the mental, physical, and sexual health of transgender youth.
Applied: Tufts, Harvard, Drexel, Buffalo, Pitt, Minnesota, Colorado on 9/22. SOPHAS verified my transcripts and application on 9/29. Brown on 10/18.
Accepted: Pitt (11/11), Buffalo (11/14), Minnesota (12/20), Tufts (1/11), Drexel (1/28)
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

In at Colorado as of this afternoon! No word on $$$ yet

I just got into Drexel!! I have been rabidly checking the admission portal and then saw mine had been updated, and proceeded to completely flip out. I'm so excited. The weird thing is, I haven't gotten an email about it yet, just the portal update. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Also it appears that last year's thread didn't see a non-HPM acceptance until feb 11th :bang:

Hi guys, did anyone who got into Pitt hear anything about funding? I just got the official letter and still no hint of it. So I'm trying to figure out if they even have any?

I haven't heard anything either! Not sure when/if we will hear. I'm hoping to go to the admitted students day in March (depending on what other schools I hear from) so if worse comes to worse I will ask for information then.

Low key annoyed by that Columbia professor mentioned earlier in this thread who send responses were coming out this week -_-
That same professor sent another email today saying this: "The accepted students should have gotten their letters today, via email"
This is for Epi btw.

For MPH or MS? I just emailed the admin team today around 3 and they said they hadn't delivered responses yet.

Wait...Epi MPH? 🙁

Scratch that...saw the response above. Phew.

Yeah, MPH. Idk why she's saying all this if no one is getting letters!
Maybe people are getting letters just not in this group. Im sure its often forgotten that there are THOUSANDS of people (no on this chat) who are applying to MPH programs haha

You mean the sum total of MPH applicants are not in this group? MY LIFE IS A LIE.

( I may be going crazy after incessantly comparing Michigan and BU)
Chill 🙂 and good luck!

Hello I am very new to the site. But I decided to join because I just applied and I'm already super anxious. Here goes nothing.

Undergrad School:
Towson University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.5
Major/Minor: Health Care Management/Business Administration
GradGPA (if applicable): N/A
Grad Studies (if applicable): N/A
GRE (including date taken) or Other Test (if applicable): Some time in December...I didn't do well. 144/144/3.5 I did take a class and still didn't do well...I'm a bad tester honestly 🙁
Experience/Research (please, be brief): I had an internship at my hospital and then ended up working with them for a year. I was mainly just patient services (scheduling) but my manager had me do lots of other tasks like prior authorization and billing you name it. I've let and now I work for a health care management company where i assist in fraud investigation. Both jobs were full time.
I've had a lot of internships that were for non profits or wholesome organizations like providing housing for adults with disabilities.
I'm in a honors fraternity and we did countless hours of volunteering while i was in college. I was also inducted into two other honor socities.
LORs: I was lucky enough to get a letter from my advisor at school who also was my professor. I was very close to her and she knows how hard working I am. My other two letters came from my previous job, my manager and my director. They were both very supportive of my hopes to continue my education and they saw me as an asset to be placed in any position while I was there.
Interested in: Epidemiology. I really would like to learn about the racial disparities (specfically African Americans) between minorities and mental health care.
Special factors???
Clearly I am not very good at standardized tests. I focused on the fact that I have a great GPA, full time work experience and have gained a lot of skills, and wrote what i believe to be a great personal statement. I hope all of this may outweigh my low GRE scores.

Applied:
e-submitted SOPHAS on 1/30 (hasn't been verified yet) JHU, GWU, and UMD
Accepted:
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

I live in MD so that is why I applied to those schools. I don't really believe I could go out of state because of cost and also the new job I started here. I'm applying for MPH at all schools, specifically in Epidemiology. But if anyone knows of schools I might have a better chance at that strictly have an online program I would gladly apply.
Anyone know my chances to the ones I have applied to so far?

Sincerely,

Super Nervous and Anxious

Congratulations! When did you receive the admission portal logins? They didn't send me any such information. I am wondering if it is because I am international applicant.

Like you said, you have a good GPA, plenty of experience, solid letters of recommendation, and a strong personal statement. These aspects of your application are very important, so I believe it can offset your GRE in the case of GWU and UMD. I think JHU is a toss-up for most people due to its prestige, but you seem to have a competitive enough profile. Their average GRE scores are approximately 158V and 157Q, but I don't know if this is considered a cutoff or not.

Thank you that was very relieving. Yea I just don't do standardized tests. I did horrible on the SATs too. Yea JHU is a long shot but i figured I give it a shot anyways! Definitely hoping for wither GWU or UMD though. Waiting is the hard part 🙂

You will be amazed the kind of schools you get into. Dont lose hope. You will do just fine. If you didnt take any stats class I recommend you apply to other MPH program that are not quantitative centred. I am saying this mainly because of the low quant score but if you took stats and aced it, you should be fine. jope tjis helps

You're in pretty good shape for GWU. My friend got in for Biostats and he had similar stats (except the GRE part).

Thank you, in this waiting period yea I'm definitely trying to stay hopeful and positive! Way back when I was like a freshmen or sophomore I did take stats...I believe I got a B in it. Again in the middle lol . I was wondering about other degree programs other than epi...however I was wondering which ones will allow me to have a diverse work field option when looking for jobs. Because I'm not good at math but I can become good at math. Nothing would stop me doing what I love to do even if there are some challenges in the way. Know of any programs less quant centered?

Wow thank you! Thats definitely good to hear. I like that school a lot. I did all I could in my application to focus on my strengths and goals.

Idk about online programs, but another thing you could consider is looking at schools that are flexible about students switching concentrations. I've heard that at Drexel, Tufts, and Brown, students don't really settle on a concentration until 2nd year since all the 1st year coursework is the same, and I'm sure that's true at other schools as well. So you could apply for policy or behavioral health or something and then switch over to epi.
