MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me too! Did you hear about financial aid?

Congrats! My email was from the department chair just saying that I was admitted and didn't mention anything about scholarships or financial aid. I'm thinking there should be another email from Mailman with specific details. What did your email say?

Just wanted to throw my two cents into this conversation. In-state domicile determination varies from state to state. I know for VA, you have to have resided in the state for a minimum of 12 months, but you cannot have been a full time student during that time. You will need to have worked and paid taxes in VA during the 12 months and done other things like register to vote in VA, get a VA driver's license, and/or register your vehicle in VA. VA seems to be fairly strict in this regard, but I imagine other states have similar requirements for establishing in-state domicile. The information for establishing domicile is readily available online for each state, but it can be difficult to parse the language. I would also check with each school's financial aid office. Typically, they'll have someone who you can talk to about establishing domicile. I hope this information is helpful! 🙂

This is definitely helpful, thank you!

Drexel sent a physical letter, but it was really generic and didn't even have that I was accepted to the MPH program, just that I was accepted to the Graduate School, and it didn't include any specific info. Honestly, it was kind of a turn-off after the really nice acceptance package that I got from BU 🙁

Weird! I got the generic letter + enrollment pamphlet as well as a personal letter from the Dean, which was mailed separately but arrived the same day. She also called me yesterday... I missed it since I was working, but I do plan to call her back. I'm leaning towards Drexel more and more, especially since other schools have been totally silent on money still.

To answer the original question, I also received mailed acceptance letters from UMN, Pitt, and Buffalo. Nothing fancy, just "welcome to the _____ department at ____" type stuff. Pitt has been the most communicative via snail mail. I've gotten frequent letters from current students and faculty telling me how great the school is, and I assume other accepted students are getting these as well.

Did anyone else on Columbia's waitlist for HPM receive an email from the department chair welcoming them to the program?
It seems to be a mistake but it's really not helping my nerves :nailbiting:

Thank you!

Accepted into Columbia HPM!! For those of us who applied after the priority deadline, does that mean we don't have a prayer of receiving merit-based scholarship?

Just called Columbia and they said a glitch in the Health Policy Dept happened and we are to ignore any email sent and to check the portal.

I took Biochem at UCB extension with Yund, and I thought it was a great course. I've seen people's complaints, and I have a sense that people feel post-bacc courses should spoon feed you. Yund's course was challenging, but I felt better prepared for biochem type questions on the MCAT (if that is interesting to you). I will couch my rec in the fact that I felt very comfortable with Ochem when I took the course. Also, I'm referring to an in-person class experience - I can't speak to any online versions of the course, if they exist.

I loved Ochem, but I was able to take that one in-person. I have taken a few online courses but worry this Biochem course will be difficult (from the reviews of the UCB extension online course, it's basically self-taught...) Thank you for your feedback, it does give me a little more hope! 🙂

Ugh. Do you have access to the portal if you haven't received a decision yet?

Just logged into my grad school application with UW and see I have a pending offer of acceptance for the MPH - nutritional sciences program?? No e-mails yet but it says Congratulations on your offer. The University is processing the offer, in 1 to 2 business days the decision buttons will be available to you to indicate your decision.

I'm also still waiting to hear from the graduate coordinated program in dietetics that I would be doing along with the MPH, but I think that offer was contingent on getting into the MPH program, so hopefully that will come soon!?

Hey has anyone else gotten a Fedex package notification that says Emory is shipping them something? I got one like an hour ago and I have no idea what it could be.

I just got an email welcoming me, but I applied sociomedical sciences. Do you think there was a glitch there too?

Just saw that I'm in at Emory for the MSPH in Epi! :clap:This is the first program I've heard back from (only applied to 2, but would be really happy with either option), and it honestly feels like a huge weight has been lifted! Time to get serious about those scholarship searches...

So, is there anyone else here who's going for the MSPH rather than MPH in Epi at Emory? According to Emory's site, only 6% of Epi students are MSPH, which struck me as odd. I guess the MSPH may not seem worth it bc it's a bit more expensive and requires 48 credit hours, compared to the MPH requiring 42 credit hours? The MSPH stood out as the better choice for me based on my career goals and research interests, but now I feel like I'm missing something. I'd be really interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this.

In at UW for Global Health MPH with full fellowship!(Tuition plus 20k/year)
Yet torn in so many choices... Especially this and Yale🙁
I am a foreign student so school name is actually quite important...
Yet getting a 100k+fellowship and turn it down for Yale where you need 120k+ is quite insane! Can anybody offer their thoughts about this?

I had a whirlwind of a day with Columbia...let me tell you guys a story:

Background: I applied 1/13 and had a phone interview with a student from the HPM department last week on 2/9. She said I would hear back as early at the end of this week. And so i waited...

At the end of my workday today around 4:20pm, I checked my email - I saw two emails from Columbia in my gmail "updates" section, so I didn't get a notification in my "primary" section (otherwise I would have checked earlier).

The first email sent at 3:08pm was a letter from the HPM dean saying congratulations but the second email was talking about the mistake in the previous email (as discussed earlier in this thread today). I read the second email first so luckily I didn't do anything rash...I called the number provided in the second email to see what was up - no answer and it didn't seem like it was even a Columbia number...weird answering message. However, I called the department itself and they said they were aware and to email the admissions email.

I sent an email asking what was going on and when I could find out the actual decision at 4:43. At 4:59, I got another email from someone in the HPM department talking about the glitch and confirming I was accepted!!! However, the admissions committee responded to my other email saying that I would find out later this week. Still confused, I called the first number that didn't work twice and it seemed like the phones were all going off in the background haha. The person on the other line asked me for my info and said that I could expect my decision letter via email later this week (I'm assuming Friday/Saturday?) and that it would be "good news". This call ended at 5:10pm. All that's to say that the hour was crazy!

That said, my application journey will seem to come to an end soon...hope to post later this week with good news indeed 🙂

Congratulations! UW has a great program. Plus Seattle is home to the headquarters of many great Global Health organizations ( Gates Foundation, PATH etc. ) and many have close ties with the school of public health. Unless Yale offers you some serious $ I wouldn't pass up this great opportunity. Also, you could always try to leverage this fellowship in hopes of getting Yale offer a scholarship, although I'd wait a few more weeks before playing that card. Just my thoughts, good luck with your decision.

I was going to apply for the MSPH program but my quant score was a bit too low for me to risk it 🙁. Also the MPH requires a thesis as well so I figured I could get research experience regardless.

How is everyone handling Dartmouth's one month timeline? Because of the 15K scholarship i got, I'm thinking of putting down the $500 deposit to hold the offer while I wait for responses from other schools.

Can anyone tell me about financial aid (specifically, assistantships) at U Minnesota? I.e., how easy are they to get? What's the application process like? Do they automatically tell you you're eligible for one or do you have to contact professors on your own?

I also am accepted to the MSPH for global epi - I just went MS because my background in biochem I felt like it is just a better fit with who i am, my interests and future plans. A lot of people combine the mph though with an MD nursing degree or a masters or phd in some sort of biological science, so maybe that is why?

So I am really torn between Columbia's MPH in epi with a certificate in infectious disease epi and Yale's MPH in epi of microbial disease. I was accepted to Columbia but I am waiting back on Yale - if Yale accepts me then this is probably going to be really hard to make a decision. Can anyone list some pros and cons about these 2 programs?

Same here. Not sure what else to do, still waiting on Hopkins.

I just got my financial aid offer from Michigan - loans and federal work study. Does scholarship stuff come later or is that it? Because this would definitely put them off of my list, so I can decline and hopefully free up a spot for someone else!

Right? I got a work/study that barely makes a dent and an unsubsidized loan...

Are you HMP? They had a webinar yesterday and I brought up the same questions, as per the HMP admin, they're still rolling out dean's awards/ scholarships.

If you're not in HMP, then I'm not certain

And Michigan was the school, if I'm not mistaken, that asked about undergraduate debt! Like, you're going to ask me about debt, and then ask me to put myself in more debt...?

I would email Mary Beth Carroll. If she's not the correct person to give you the answers or more help in this she will direct you to them!

UW is an excellent school of public health. While it might not have the broad name recognition that Yale has, it's school of public health is generally more highly regarded in industry. You may want to think about what you plan to do with the degree. Prior foreign student posters have cited concern that without the name recognition, they may have less opportunity in their home countries - do you have this concern. If not, I see no reason whatsoever that you should turn down such a phenomenal financial aid package and whatever individualized perks come with the fellowship. If you feel very strongly about Yale, I agree with other responders - see if they're willing to give you some $$$ to compete with UW's generous offer. Also, (and this is just my opinion), Seattle > New Haven any day. Unless it's important for you to be near NY.

I was recently accepted to Yale's SBS program and am actually going to visit, today, so I will post later about my experience. I don't know how useful it will be for you, since you're prospectively in a different department. I met with an alumna last night over beers to talk about her experience, and she had nothing, I mean *nothing* good to say about the SBS program and said she hated her time at the school. Some things she said she disliked about it: very quantitative methods heavy, which is pretty common, however this was to the point that qualitative research felt actively discouraged and laughed off; ugly and unpleasant facilities; "a complete lack of critical thinking" (ouch); felt like the school just exists to bring in money to fund the medical school; small size can be nice but also means fewer course offerings; low community engagement/investment; little funding for students' research; huge discrepancy between support/resources for undergrads versus public health grads (this person attended Yale undergrad).

I'm sad to hear all of this because I am (was?) excited about Yale, but given the sticker price, all of these things are super concerning to me. I am hoping my visit will give me some clarity. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

Please let me know what you think! I was also accepted to Yale SBS- I doubt I'll attend, but I'd appreciate hearing your remarks. Sounds v. discouraging so far 🙁

Does anyone know if Emory has already distributed merit scholarships/if not, when they are expected to be distributed by? Trying to make decisions here and Emory's slowness is not helping.

By paying your deposit, wouldn't you be committing to that school?

After receiving the two e-mails from Columbia's department of Health Policy and Management yesterday, I e-mailed admissions asking when we should expect to receive decisions. I was told I was still on the waitlist and should expect to hear in early May. This is strange because I was never told I was put on the waitlist in the first place. Oh well, Emory it is
