MPH Fall 2017: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone else just get crickets in response when trying to contact anyone at UIC? It's really offputting

Has anyone else been e-mailed by a current Columbia student about talking with them on the phone? I have a phone call with a current student today and haven't thought of much to ask.

I did! It was actually really informal- I focused my questions around student life and living in NYC. I also asked about the core which I heard so much about. After the call I've been emailing the student about random questions and she's been super helpful.

Brown's a world class learning institution, but it's never had a strong name in medicine, pharma, or any other health related field. The smart thing to do is to go Columbia. This is coming from someone admitted to Brown and waitlisted at Columbia.

Thanks for this! I'm leaning toward Columbia more and more too. Also getting more $$ from Columbia than from Brown (scholarship only; haven't heard from finaid).

I've heard a few people say that it's hard to form relationships with professors at Columbia because the program is large. I guess that's the only real negative I've heard so far, so... could be worse. Great to hear there is such a big social justice focus on campus!

Hey! Just wanted to comment about the professor thing. I'm an admitted student and I reached out to a professor this morning because her research interests me, and she got back to me within 2 hours. I think it depends on your department and such, but don't let that turn you away!

Sorry to hear that, i'm still waiting so i'm assuming it can't be good news.
I received my acceptance only last Friday, so unless, I was the last in, doesn't seem like time to despair yet!

I spoke with a student from SMS. It was very helpful! We mostly talked about SMS, the Core, student organizations, and housing. It was informal for me as well.

Has anyone received a travel grant from Michigan?
Received $400 to attend Admitted Students Day, hope to see some of you there!

Also, I declined all offers except Emory and Michigan! Hopefully, I opened up a spot for someone waiting on Columbia SMS and bumped someone up on the Yale SBS waitlist!

Thank you for your response! Definitely agree with you on the importance of location. I visited BU for admitted students day this past weekend. While I absolutely LOVE the professors, I went to BU for undergrad and stayed in the area after for 2+ years since. I am having a hard time justifying staying here for another 2 years. eek.

I'm going to admitted students day at Columbia on Friday and I am hoping I have a positive experience just like you did!
And if you end up hating Columbia, it'll make your decision-making process that much easier haha. That's why visiting is so important!

Have any of you that have been accepted to Michigan's HMP MHSA program, received a merit based scholarship?

Yup. Students have to be willing to be the ones to approach the professors themselves, too. I've never been turned down by a professor at Columbia after asking to meet or talk to them. 🙂

I'm pretty frustrated that I made travel plans to NYC this weekend for admitted students day and Columbia will not guarantee that I will have a tour of the campus. I was put on a tour waitlist. I feel like they should plan enough tours for everyone coming to admitted students day to see the campus! Anyone else having this issue?

Got an invite to Columbia's Annual breakfast for Admitted Students of Color the morning of their first admit day, which I think is really awesome. They seem to really celebrate and embrace diversity, from what I've gathered from their website. Won't be attending the breakfast, but I thought I'd share!
This is awesome! I'm choosing between Berkeley and Columbia right now, and Berkeley has an entire day set for Students of Color before their official admit day. I'm attending Columbia's admit day on 3/31, but haven't heard anything of this sort for this admit day. Hoping they'll have something like this.

For those of you who had students reach out to you, which departments were you accepted to? I was accepted to SMS, and haven't gotten any calls or e-mails.

I was accepted to SMS as well and had a student reach out last week or earlier this week... I can't remember exactly when. A professor as well.

I called Columbia to ask my application and when they'd be releasing decisions, and they said that they're finishing up December 1st applications and haven't yet gotten to January 15th applications. I should expect an answer back mid march.

Has anyone else gotten this answer?

I applied before the priority deadline and I haven't even received an admissions email yet! Every time I call admissions they say it'll be a couple weeks, but don't ask any questions about me or my application. Last time I called was two weeks ago, and I sent an email last week but still no one has gotten back to me. So I think that's the best answer you're going to get! :/

Has anyone received a more detailed itinerary for Columbia's Admit Day Friday? I'm sure they'll send it out, but I'm the kind of person that loves knowing things far in advance

Nope. And I'm the same way so it's making me a bit nervous.

The last school I'm waiting to hear back from is JHU. The site where I usually am able to check my status that option went away? Is this a bad thing? Can't tell if anyone is experiencing this issue

That happened to me all the time until I wrote an email complaining about this. I found a woman called Cherie Weinewuth to be very helpful with everything. Her email is [email protected]. Hopefully this will help.

Have you received any email from Columbia other than your acceptance email? I have not received any information regarding Columbia's Admit Day? Thanks.

Me!!! Nothing from them since they received the application. When did you apply?
I submitted mine December 1st! Kind of weird because they're already having accepted students day but not everyone has heard back :nailbiting:

Did your portal change? Because I can't check my status anymore on the portal and I haven't gotten an email yet 0_o
The same thing happened to me and next day I got a rej from JHU...
Don't be nervous I assume it only means your decision is made and you will hear from them soon.

You need to register for the accepted students day by going to their website. I found this out while trying to find an email address to email someone about why I hadn't received any info about it yet. I don't think they ever sent a formal email with a link explaining you need to register online ahead of time, which is kind of irritating

I accepted admission to UMich HMP program a few weeks ago and I got an automated email from [email protected] just after midnight saying that I received a new "Official Award Notice." When I went on wolverine access, the only thing that was different was under the Awards->Award notice where there was a PDF available regarding my current financial aid (which is one sizable federal loan offer and one federal work-study offer, both of which I knew about 2 weeks ago). Did anyone else receive this email? I'm hoping this doesn't mean that I didn't receive any aid from the school.

I also received this email and when I checked the wolverine account there wasn't anything new.

No I accepted the invite but still haven't gotten an agenda. Seems disorganized.
I also never got an email. Granted, I only registered on Tuesday, but their admissions email seems to be pretty active from what I've seen. I talked to my friend who is a 2nd year Mailman student and she said that the admitted students day was quite informative and useful

I first became aware of my acceptance through the portal. All of the tabs changed. Specifically, there was one that said, "Reply to offer of admission and pay deposit." About 24-hours after that, I received a formal acceptance letter via email. Good luck!

When is admitted students day at? I applied late to Pitt and plan to hear back shortly.

Accepted to Brown with the 25% scholarship yesterday! I thought the email to access the portal would be a rejection so I never checked, but then today got the scholarship email! 🙂 Hope everyone else waiting hears soon!

Idk about travel grants, but when I got my admissions letter from them, it said something to the effect of "there is no tuition assistance funding available for MPH candidates and you are expected to make your own arrangements." So...

I'm rapidly losing hope on Brown. Has anyone who applied for an MPH in Behavioral and Social Sciences heard back? Has anyone called the department/admissions to ask? I might next week if I don't hear tomorrow. I applied in October. The wait has been so agonizing that I have started to plan to attend another school (budgeting moving costs, reading course guides, etc) because it makes me feel calmer than thinking about how I still don't know all the options I might have.
