MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I just got back from the UNC HPM interview day at Chapel Hill. It was such a great experience. The curriculum is so well-structured and there are so many opportunities for professional development. The faculty is really laid back and welcoming. Gillings just seems like a great place to be. It's still one of my top choices. Hopefully, I should be getting a decision back this week.

Do you live in or near NC? Or did you fly out for your interview?

Got rejected from Columbia and accepted to Berkeley today! So excited since Berkeley was my #1 choice.

----

Applied: (11/29) UC Berkeley - Health and Social Behavior, (11/29) University of Washington - Community Oriented Public Health Program, (11/29) Columbia- Population and Family Health
Accepted: University of Washington (1/24), UC Berkeley (2/12)
Rejected: Columbia (2/12)

Have you made up your mind on schools yet? I also got into Tulane and Vanderbilt for GH and am curious to know your thoughts.
I’m debating the same.

Both are about the same price point and culture (tuition, cost of living, etc. size of the university, Southern, culture centers).

Tulane gave me more money, seems like they have more funding overall. Tulane is a solid Global Health program with connections to the CDC and one of the oldest more prestigious programs. I had a phone call with one of their previous students, and she loved the program because they’re really flexible about class times, more relaxed. She also loves the city.

Vanderbilt doesn’t have much information since they intentionally keep the classes small, but speaking with a current student, she said the classes are really small 9-13 students. Their global connections aren’t as glamourous, most students seemed to do their global health practicum locally in the Tennessee area. She also mentioned that their research is more clinical since their med school is so intertwined with their program.

We can trade information if you want to talk it out together.

My problem is that I don't know whether it's a good idea for me to give up on studying psychiatric epidemiology in order to get less debt. I mean, GW doesn't have any classes in psychiatric epidemiology. So the question for me is, should I give up studying what I really want to study in order to have 1/4 the amount of debt that I would have if I went to Emory?
I would recommend reaching out to GW to see if there is any faculty doing research in the field you are interested in that may not be easy to find on your own. I did that with schools when I was narrowing down where to apply. I learned that some schools were no longer doing research they had listed and others did have research and elective courses that I was interested in that were not visible on their websites. There may be nothing there, but it cannot hurt to check and help make your decision!

This forum has been extremely helpful - so glad I found it!

I'm going the global health route since i knew this would be my strongest bet into getting into most programs due to my strong international/research/internship experience. However, I'm more interested in Health Behavior but looking at many curricula and certificates, I know I can easily incorporate both into my education. Tulane and NYU were my #1 for the longest time but then I decided to apply to Columbia and JHU, which are now my top 2. I have to, reluctantly, turn down NYU's Cross-Continental MPH because after reading and hearing from people, the program is still super new and has many flaws. Has anyone else heard this? It's also not ranked for some reason. Also, is anyone strongly considering Tulane as of now?

GPA: 3.58, GRE scores: 152V 150Q 4.5AW
Applied: GW, BU, Emory, Tulane, NYU 2-yr, NYU Cross Continental, Drexel, Yale, UNC, Columbia, JHU (MSPH Int'l Health), JHU (MSPH Health Ed & Comm)
Accepted: GW (1/18), BU (1/31), Emory (1/27), Tulane (2/2) , NYU 2-yr (1/15), NYU Cross Continental (2/2), Drexel (2/2)

I’m glad you posted this! I haven’t seen any current information about NYU’s Cross-Continental MPH other than this thread: A word of caution to anyone considering the Cross-Continental MPH at NYU. and even this is a bit dated.

It was originally my top choice as well, I’m sur for similar reasons! That was before reading about all the hesitations of one of the current students. Now I’m not sure where I stand on the program, which is sad because I was super excited about this opportunity for a while. However, I don’t want to base my decision off the experience of just one person. I did a little bit of “stalking” and found another student in the program. I reached out to her but I’m still waiting to hear back. Hopefully her insight will be valuable.

I haven’t heard back from any of the other programs that I’ve applied to, so as of now I don’t have any other options. I’m worried because they want a decision by March 1st and I’m hoping I will have received notification from everywhere else I applied by then. When I submitted my Cross-Continental application I asked to be considered for the on campus global health program given that I wasn’t accepted into the CCMPH. I’ve been wondering is it possible to still be considered for that program. I’m really at a loss. I see you’ve been accepted into a NYU for a 2 yr program, did you apply separately?

When I received my acceptance, I was ecstatic because it was my first acceptance and once my dream program. But my feelings have subsided into a mix of emotions. Do you mind if I ask, did they offer you any merit scholarship aid?

Did anyone else apply or receive admittance into this program?

Does anyone have insight into Berkeley's HPM second-year field placement? Is it paid work experience or is it more like an unpaid internship? Can't seem to find any information on their website and I never received an email back from Berkeley.

I was accepted into the cross continental program with an $18k scholarship. I ultimately declined my offer of admission based on what I read from other students and the total cost. I felt like spending that much money on a program I wasn't 100% sure about wasn't in my best interest. If the program was more established I think it would have been a no brainer, but unfortunately I think it needs a few more years to figure some of the kinks out.

🙁 ugh you're right, the cost of the program plus all the uncertainty surrounding it doesn't rank it high on the list. What school are you leaning towards?

Would anyone going to the Emory admitted students day be interested in coordinating plans? I'm just thinking that if there's anything away from campus that several of us want to do, we could save some money by splitting travel costs. If anyone's interested, message me or just reply to this.

Right now I'm between UCLA, BU, and Emory! I'm having such a hard time deciding, but will probably come down to cost. I hope you hear back from other schools soon! Where else did you apply?

I’m starting to really lean towards Umich for mph in Epi. My partner just got accepted there too so that really solidifies things. I’m coming from California, so I’m concerned about the weather/car situation (I have a Honda Fit), but anyone have any ideas as to how good the program is and the location? Thanks!! The only other option now is UCLA basically.

I'm not sure what you mean about the "weather/car situation," but I'm from northern Indiana and I've driven around the upper Midwest a lot. So if you have any questions about cars and winter, feel free to ask. Also, your Honda should be fine for driving in Michigan. Just make sure to carry kitty litter and a shovel in your trunk during the winter if you end up at UMich.

omg i'm thinking about going but i don't know yetttttt. but i would love to meet up with anyone going to emory's visit day! i'm not creepy at all i'm a very small asian american woman

Haha I'm definitely going for Friday at least, and I'd love to meet up. I'm not creepy either, I'm just a very small native american woman

We should all meet up! I signed up for Friday, but I'm going to try to see if I can re-register for both days because I want to go on the campus/housing tours and the CDC museum. 😛 I'm not creepy at all...totally normal, average height black woman I swear! lol

I haven't registered yet because I want to hear back from the travel grant first but if I do get it I'm planning to attend both days!

Ouu sounds like a tough decision, but good predicament to be in! Thank you! I applied to Columbia, Brown, Yale, GWU, UMich, UCLA, and UC Berkeley

I applied for the travel grant as well but I checked out that I wanted to attend only Friday, however now I want to attend both days. I guess it's back to emaling admissions frantically. lol

ME!!! That sounds fun!

How did you apply for the travel grant? Did you just email admissions?

Has anyone heard from Harvard HPM??
Very few people have heard back from Harvard, and none of them were from MPH in Health Policy or Management.

Rejected from Columbia!
Oh man, I'm sorry. I know you've been waiting for schools to get back 🙁

I still have not heard from Columbia. This is so concerning. Is there anybody else in my boat?
Me too! I applied right on the deadline, but I haven't got any communication after they deemed my application complete and sent me financial information.

Same...it seems they're releasing a wave of rejections today. I guess if we don't hear from today's batch there's hope. Last year Columbia also had a similar pattern of releasing decisions.
What would you say their usual pattern is like?

What days are you guys thinking of flying into ATL? I was planning on flying in on Wednesday, but then I saw that the student housing isn't offered for Wednesday night so I don't know what to do.

I'm planning Wednesday and arriving early to look around ATL. I'm planning to get an Airbnb or something

All of you who are visiting Emory, please share your experiences with us! I just saw the schedule. I'm bummed that I can't be there, but you know... can't justify the cost and the 20+ hour journey. 😛

Also, an unrelated question. I really feel like WES screwed up my undergrad GPA conversion (big time- there are some errors :/). I do have a masters with a considerably better GPA. Do you think schools will give my masters more weight while looking at my app?

Yeah I emailed admissions asking how to access the travel grant form and they just sent it to me. 🙂

Thank you so much! I just emailed them so hopefully they get back to me soon. The visit days for Yale and Emory are so close together I would need a miracle plus no sleep to be able to pull it off.

How are you all going to make your decision? My current issue is that I don't have a strong preference towards any of the schools I've gotten into, and in any case want to give all schools a fair consideration.

Obviously, isiting is one of the best ways to gather information, but I unfortunately can't go everywhere. In the case of Emory and UPitt, for instance, even if travel ends up being feasible, their revisit days are the same day. So I should really do my research before hand. But I feel like I don't really even know where to start!

I guess I'll start by reviewing my SOPs for each of the schools. I also know I'm going to do a cost comparison. I feel like I already scoured the website clean when I was writing my statements, but it won't hurt to check again. But what are you doing? I know different people value different things, but I'd love to hear what you're all taking into account. I figure in any case, the more information I can gather, the better informed my decision will be.

Because of my stats, I decided not to apply to a lot of schools. I applied to a safety and a few far reach schools. Colorado was more of a backup to me, since I wasn't banking on getting into Emory. UCLA is my alma mater so I thought I had to choose between staying in an area where I've known for a few years and am comfortable with versus moving to a completely different state and scenery.

I'm from California and obviously Colorado is closer, but getting into Emory changed a lot of my plans. lol Since I didn't get into UCLA, I have the options of going to Charles Drew (a small, private health science professional school in Los Angeles), Colorado CU Anschutz, and Emory. I declined Colorado's offer earlier today to make room for other applicants who really want to go there. The decision now seems easy, but I still have a few other things to work through before I close the deal. I always thought that if I got into my top choice, I would do anything to make it work and go there, which is what I'm trying to do right now. 🙂 Yes the financial expense does worry me but I'll have to take out loans wherever I decide to go so why not take out loans for an awesome opportunity? 😀

No prob! Haha good luck! Are you trying to visit both days for Emory or just one of the days? I initially wanted to just go on Friday because the website said that's when the main events are but then I saw so many stuff happening on the 22nd and I don't want to miss it. lol

Depends on whether I can get the travel grant since I already spent way too much on flights + took days off work. But I think if I were to go I would want to attend both days since there is so freaking much happening on the 22nd that I don't want to feel like I put in the effort of going and still missed out on stuff.

Last few hours have been like a roller coaster ride -.-
Three things happened:
1. Got USD 20,000 scholarship from Boston University 😀
2. Got rejection email from Columbia 🙁
3. Got accepted to Emory University (waiting on their scholarship info which they informed me I’ll get by next week) 😀

Now I have to choose between Emory and Boston. What are you thoughts? Still so bummed about Columbia. But I just applied to three universities and got through two so I am trying to take Columbia in a positive way.
Look forward to your thoughts!!

Congrats on getting into Emory and securing that scholarship from BU! Sorry to hear about Columbia, though. But you've gotten into some great places and I'm sure you can't go wrong with either! 🙂 If you were set on Columbia, BU may be a good fit since it comes closest to Columbia's MPH structure (departments, certificate).

What would you say their usual pattern is like?

Last year in mid-February, Columbia rejections and waitlists came on the 9th and 10th, and acceptances on the 8th, and 15th. March was random. Someone got accepted in April. Of course only a tiny portion of applicants actually post on SDN so I could be wrong about the pattern. Also, people who are rejected during acceptance waves may choose to lurk instead of post.

Thank you so much. Boston sounds like good choice but isn’t Emory better otherwise?
