MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Probably a really dumb question, but does the schools you applied to emailing you constantly about other opportunities, ways to finance your education there, etc. a good indication of acceptance? I remember it being that way for undergrad.
I don't believe so. I think it's just mass emails to their applicants.

Hi everyone! I know I'm a bit late to the game but I didn't know grad school would be an option for me so soon until recently.
Undergrad School: University of Kentucky, graduated May 2017
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: Cumulative: 3.3 Major: 3.7 (freshman year I was in a science major and had personal stuff going on... that's mainly what brings my cumulative down)
Major/Minor: Major: Integrated Strategic Communication (basically marketing comm.) Minor: Health Promotion
GRE: Took yesterday 12/11! V:156 Q:145:lame: (12/19 Update: Got a 5.0 on AWA! Wish someone cared more about this part, haha!)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
-Communication involvement with orgs. throughout college, various leadership experience on campus
-interned in development/communication at local Make-a-Wish chapter
-heavily involved (w. leadership, fundraising, etc.) in the largest Greek philanthropy event on campus for 3 years
-currently working in the foundation of the largest hospital system in my state. I work in events specifically but support all fundraising efforts for the entire system.
This is my main related experience. I know it's not much, but I had to work 20-30 hours every week to support myself during school. I got as involved as I could.

LOR: Associate professor I had for multiple classes in college (received A in each class, should be a strong letter), my supervisor at MAW (should be extremely strong, we also worked on philanthropy in college together), my current supervisor, he is the director of events in the foundation (should be very strong as well)

Special factors???
I studied in Ireland and traveled around Europe for one semester junior year. Gained a lot of global perspective and life experience.
I also have a working proficiency in French.

Interested in: Health Promotion/Behavior/Education, Global Health, Program Planning
In the future, I want to work for an international health organization in programming/community engagement. Not married to this idea, but that's what I'm thinking as of now.
Applying: (still in process because I had to take the GRE so late. I realize I'm missing some priority deadlines here!!)
St. Louis University (Global Health), University of Georgia (Health Promotion and Behavior), Oregon State University (Global Health), University of South Carolina (Health Promotion, Education and Behavior), San Diego State University (Health Promotion and Behavioral Science), University of Arizona (Health Behavior/Health Promotion)

Any opinions on my situation?? I know my Q score could hurt me, but some of the programs I'm applying to recommend a combined score of 300 which I have. I guess I'm just not sure... I know it's not great but none of the programs put a huge huge emphasis on math (I did well in my college stats class which is on my transcript if they want to see it).

Also, I'm hoping to have at least one more safety school to apply to, but I haven't really been able to find one to suit my needs... I'm almost positive I'd get into OSU because my scores and GPA are above what they require, but I'd like at least one more safety. Any thoughts?
Thanks everyone and good luck as you begin to hear back 🙂

Just got an email acceptance from Pitt!! Too bad they don't really offer any aid or assistance since I really like their program.

I have very similar stats to you and got into SLU! (My GRE quant was a little higher and the verbal a little lower but I was applying to epidemiology and biosecurity so it worked out better for me that way).

Please does anyone have an idea on the deadline for payment of supplemental application fee for Berkeley, i mailed the school but nothing was said to that question?

I would look into Minnesota or Colorado. My scores and GPA are similar to yours but you do have some relevant experience. I think if you have a strong SOP you should be good. Don't get discouraged before you start!!

Sorry for the second reply. I didn't see the portion about safety schools. Indiana University will waive the GRE requirement if you have over a 2.75. It's worth looking into that program! Also Pitt just accepted me for one of their more competitive programs, so you could also check there!

I did not apply to the Health Policy and Management program but it took about a week for them to send me email confirmation that they received my application for another program. According to previous years' threads, Emory is really slow when it comes to communication.
So if SOPHAS verified my app on 12/8, it will take Emory at least a week or two to send me the OPUS link and receive my application?

My application was verified on 11/27 and I got my OPUS account information on like 12/4.

I Would think about looking into Tulane! They have an amazing international health and development program and are very highly ranked! However, it seems they have been a little easier on stats and get back to you with a decision quickly!

Awesome! Once they sent you the OPUS link, you were able to add in other program choices?
Yup! You also have to make sure that the demographic section is correct. They explain all of that in the email they send with the link to get the OPUS log-in info.

I have a couple of questions...

First, so after verification, sophas said my overall GPA is a 3.35 and in the breakdown, my math gpa is a 2.60 (Calc 1 first semester of freshman year with a C, two statistics classes with B's. Horrendous, I know 🙁). Since my math gpa is so low, will it prevent me from getting into epidemiology programs? I really want to do epi, but should I apply to other concentrations for the schools that I haven't submitted an application for yet? (UWisc, Ohio State, and OregonHSU)

Second, does anyone have an idea as to how that GPA will affect me for UT-Houston? Houston is probably my top choice (tied with Ohio). How strict do they tend to be for that? My quant score also wasn't the best, at just 153.

Bonus question: When does UTH tend to send out decision emails? I just got an email yesterday saying they've received my application.

Thank you guys so much!!

Waitlisted at NYU!! How does this work, how do I get accepted?! This is like my top school!!

Is there an option to let them know you accept the waitlist position? If so, perhaps that will show commitment?

And then follow-up with the admissions office through an email or letter, let them know you're still very interested. You can periodically do this especially if you've gained new experiences in some way.

Nope 🙁 just an email. And I’ve been trying to call for a while with no response, straight to a voicemail. And I’m trying to chat online with the admissions and they’ve been gone for a while!

Try to email an individual from admissions, whether that be the director or assistant director of admissions?

They ended up responding through the chat, and they’re just providing me technical info that I could’ve honestly found answers to online. Do you (or anyone else) know when they usually get back to waitlisted people?

You'll probably hear back around March/ April. This is when people start to make their decisions as to where they want to go, thus freeing up spots in the class for those that got waitlisted.

For Wisconsin, are you applying to the MS in Epi or the generalized MPH?

I've hyped Indiana University and I'll stick with it. Your overall GPA is high enough that you don't have to submit GREs to them. Apply there for the epi program.

Hey can someone help me?
GW priority deadline is this Friday and I want to submit bc I have everything ready for them, but the rest of my schools are not complete. How do I submit to just one school without losing the work I've done so far for other schools? 🙁(( please help

It's alright if the rest of your schools are not yet complete. The thing with SOPHAS is that you can add schools and work on current applications even after you submit one school. However, the rest of your application is locked and cannot be edited (Personal Information, Academic History, Supporting Information). The Program Materials for the school you SUBMITTED are locked as well, but for your incomplete applications, you can still work on them until you choose to submit them specifically. Also, you won't lose the progress you already made in those apps.

When you submit now, your transcript and application will go to the verification process. Once verified, I believe is when schools really start reviewing your application. Once one application is verified (which can take 1-3 weeks, is what I've noticed this year), the rest take less than 24 hours to verify when you submit them (because they already basically verified you through the first application you submitted).

Just make sure to review all your information (i.e. resume, the transcript you entered) before you submit and good luck!

I'm going to apply for the MPH program at Wisconsin. I had read about Indiana, but for some reason didn't consider it. I'll look at it again. Do you think my stats are too low for other schools? Like UT, UW(I know I won't get in here), Ohio, Wisc?

Edit:
I just looked at their website... They say that GRE isn't required for US citizens, however, I'm just a permanent resident. I'm applying for citizenship but don't think I'll get it for a few months at least.

thank you! But how do i go about doing this? The submit button is grey meaning I cannot press it.

Who else applied to UW? I don't see a lot of talk about them, even though they are one of the top programs (and probably my first choice next to Columbia).
I applied to UW for the MPH in epidemiology. I think a lot of people maybe don’t apply there since they don’t use SOPHAS.

Are you sure you've filled out everything?

I added a random program to show you that the progress bar on it is not finished yet because I did not complete the specific Program Materials for it (submitting my personal statement and answering the school's additional questions), hence I cannot submit it:

All of these should be completed beforehand (including the program materials for the ONE school you want to apply to now - all of your program materials for each school do not have to be completed to submit just one) :

I just want to say congratulations to everyone receiving acceptances to the MPH programs! I got my first acceptance from Charles Drew University of Medicine & Science in Los Angeles last week! I'm excited to be accepted to at least one MPH program, so now the possibility of going to grad school next year is now definite! My top choice is Emory even though I feel that my test scores (145 V, 148 Q) will likely hinder my chances of getting in but I'm still holding on to hope and thinking positive thoughts. Good luck to anyone still waiting to hear from other schools!

What is y'all opinion on addressing a weak GRE score (60th percentile for epi) in your SoP? Some people have been telling me I should address it by mentioning how other parts of my app (such as my statistics minor) make up for it while others have been telling me I shouldn't bring attention to it and focus on more positive aspects of my app.

Mine was only 69th percentile and I've had no problem whatsoever-- I wouldn't worry about addressing as long as you're above 50th percentile!

congrats that is quiet decent funding
Thank you! Yes, it's about 50% which puts the program into the serious contenders pile since my partner is planning to apply to law school either during or right after my mph so $$$ will be stretched tight/nonexistent

Update: My husband just freaked out with excitement when I told him since apparently NYU has the #1 international law program and it's one of his dream schools!

I wouldn't say anything about the GRE specifically. 60th percentile is not super super low, even for epi, so I wouldn't draw attention to it. It's certainly not bad enough to write a supplemental statement. If you are very nervous, you could talk about how much you enjoyed/learned from/can do from your stats classes in your SOP or mention what you are looking forward to learning in biostat.

For anyone who was accepted into their second or third choice program concentration at Emory's RSPH, did you have to send another draft of your personal statement that was geared towards the second/third choice program?

Also, my GRE scores are very low, I'm really stressed about it because I didn't explain or mention why I have a low score. The reason for that is because there isn't a specific reason why I did terrible. I studied for months and was getting okay scores on the practice tests but when I really went in for the real deal, I bombed it (not in a good way of course lol). I retook the GRE and did even worse. The only reason I can think of is that I'm a bad testtaker. I did really bad on the SATs as well but still got accepted into UCLA, which I gave credit to my extracurriculars and my personal statement. If I do get the chance to send a new personal statement to one of my second or third choice programs at Emory, should I explain why my GRE scores are low (145 V, 148 Q)?

I definitely would not bring attention to it in your SOP as your score isn’t low enough for that. I would only do that if your score was below the 50th percentile. I think that admissions committees would deem it odd and unnecessary to talk about a 60th percentile score. Like others have said, just talk about how much you’ve learned in your stats minor and emphasize other areas that make you seem good at the things required for an Epi degree. Personally, I scored a 73% on the quant and I had a horrible track record with math classes at the start of college (was a film major, then a Spanish major, was in two remedial math classes, etc) and I’ve only ever done one health-related stats class (got an A in it), so I highlighted all of my research experience and how well I’ve done in my epidemiology classes instead. And I’ve gotten into Tulane, GWU, Emory, and Michigan so far

Congratulations!! I had a question, how long was the entire process for you? Like from when they said they received your application to the decision?

Hey! So I submitted my SOPHAS to them around halloween, I received an email saying my GRE was missing a week later (because my test date was Nov18th). Then I took the GRE and my score was submitted november 22nd. Then they just emailed me my acceptance today! So i guess that makes the whole decision making process 3 weeks.

Has anyone heard back from USF Global Health? I have been accepted to the Epidemiology program but since I applied for the dual concentration I am waiting to hear from Global Health but it's been almost a month.

Congratulations on being accepted into the Epi program. When did you hear from USF/when did you send in your application? Did they email you or did your notification come through the portal?
