Just got into Harvard!!! I just got an email saying that the admissions decision was ready in the my.harvard portal and the decision letter was waiting there!
When did you apply and get verified?

I applied at the very end of October (dont remember the exact date) and was got notification from Harvard that my app was received on November 7th.
That's nice. I didn't submit until Dec 1st. I received my Harvard key on Jan 10th. Do you mind posting your stat?

Congratulations! Would you mind posting your admission statistics (i.e. test scores, GPA, work experience)? I applied to Harvard for the MPH program in Health Policy in late October and am anxious to hear back!

Congrats !!Which program did u apply too??

Yale just gave current students some admissions info, so I thought I would update all of you.

1. Their goal is to send out all admissions decisions by the end of February. They received even more applications this year than last year, so they might end up finishing up around early March. Don't worry if you haven't heard back yet. They are just going through the pile and releasing decisions as they go.

2. Last year, the acceptance rate was around 10% (which is one of the lowest among public health schools due to its small size...many other top schools are closer to 50% and above since they are much larger programs receiving a similar numbers of applications). However, last year, more students said "yes" than anticipated. Therefore, this year, they are lowering the acceptance rate to bring class sizes back down.

Hello!🙂
I have been lurking forever, and decided that I'd finally jump in.

Firstly, congrats on your Harvard acceptance. That's HUGE  Like the others, I am curious about the stats, if you don't mind!

Secondly, is anyone here considering the MPH/MPA dual degree offered by Brown? I've mailed them about it, and they responded with a very comprehensive mail about the programme structure, courses, etc. I'm a bit worried about a couple of things though. 20 courses + a thesis + a two week global policy exercise (a good range of experiences to get the best of both degrees, but unfortunately it only leaves room for one elective) What do you guys generally feel about dual degrees? Do you think it's potentially an added advantage, or that it could dilute your programmatic focus? Any inputs on this will be highly appreciated. I really want to make the decision soon so that I can submit before Feb 1st if I end up going with just the MPH.

Thanks so much for your insight! Are you in the MPH program? How do you like it? How does it compare to other schools, such as BU?

I know my GRE score is horrible!!! Which makes me super nervous while waiting for the results. Anyone with a similar clinical experience ? any thoughts on low GRE scores and clinical experience ?

Congrats

Best of luck to everyone!!

Harvard Epi (online/hybrid) or Hopkins (Online/part time)? - trying to see what everyone else thinks. I'm having trouble making up my mind. Also - does anyone have any idea on what kind of financial aid either programs offer?

Just received an email from Columbia stating that I must report my parents' information on the FAFSA? Does anyone know why they are requesting this? I am classified as an independent because of my age--and my mother refuses to give her financial information on the FAFSA (which makes sense because she will not be the one paying for my graduate studies). Is there any way to receive a reasonable amount of aid without parental information, or should I just give up on Columbia all together?

I'm in the same situation! I recommend reaching out to Columbia's financial aid dept. and see if there are any other options.

for people who applied to UIC- do you have a portal?

I applied to UIC last week (I don’t remember the exact date but it should be in my signature?) and I still have not gotten confirmation from them or any news about a portal! I did get the standard SOPHAS confirmation.

Hey guys - wanted your opinions on applying for financial aid to Harvard. How much of an impact can applying for aid have on your acceptance?
Thanks!

I don't think it will impact in anyway. Due to the equal opportunity laws, they can't lower your chances just because you need the money to fund for school!

I don't know if it is need-blind like for undergrad admission. Most likely not. The equal opportunity laws do not cover this.

If it is not need-blind, then requiring aids could lower your chance.

Thanks so much for your insight!
Are you in the MPH program? How do you like it? How does it compare to other schools, such as BU?

First of all, I have been very happy with Yale's program all around. Faculty and teaching fellows are available, the program is rigorous and fair for the most part, and I truly feel as though I am preparing for a career in public health. Feel free to ask or private message me specific questions!

In my opinion, whether you choose BU or Yale depends on what you are looking for in a program in terms of specificity. Both Yale and BU have a Core Curriculum where you take broad public health classes, so you do gain broad public health knowledge in both curriculums. I definitely feel that Yale does a great job with breadth of public health.

The difference is really in your starting point. Yale admits you directly into a department, so you start taking department specific courses in your first semester alongside the core. You quickly form a little family with faculty and peers within your specific department (all of which are small), and you take specific classes that you may be extra passionate about right from the beginning. In short, Yale students typically come in with some kind of defined interest. You are admitted directly into a specific program and get right into that course work. Yale is also a much smaller school as a whole.

At BU, you are admitted into their MPH program rather than into a specific department. You do not declare your certificates, the department system BU uses, until later in your program. You start off with your core classes and have time before deciding on a specific interest. If I chose BU, I would have eventually declared certificates in epidemiology/biostats and infectious disease. I felt that I would not get to explore infectious diseases and make faculty connections in the field until later in the program, but that belief could be misguided. However, BU allows you to mix and match certificates to make your own unique tailored degree if that better suits your interest.

I like that Yale's program is very coherent as you take department specific courses in a sequence that directly relate to infectious disease epi. In the end, it comes down to where you want your focus to be. If you are still on the fence of a concentration or if you like the idea of creating unique degrees by mixing and matching certificates, BU may be a better option. Yale is perhaps a better option if your interests align directly with one of their departments as you will be able to jump right into that material. Both are great Schools of Public Health, and you really cannot go wrong either way.
