MPH Fall 2018: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

Hahah yeah the free app thing is soliddd!! I honestly didn’t think I could get in because of its reputation but I threw an app out there bc it was free. Yeah I hear you, I was worried about my GPA too, but it worked out 🙂 I think they are looking for experience over anything (and also that you didn’t get below a 3.0). Like for control of infectious disease they said they prefer students who have international work experience, which I do. Oh yeah they are super helpful with the moving situation!! I am constantly in contact with like 8 different department people at the school trying to figure this all out because I’m a planner and they are all very helpful. They have a website/student board dedicated to helping students find housing and roommates, and they also have university owned houses and residence halls that you can apply for. They do not give scholarships to US students for the most part (unless you applied for a Marshall scholarship or Fulbright and get it in which case it’s full funding). I don’t come from money and am paying for this on my own, so I’ve looked into this pretty rigorously. Basically what I’ve decided is that it potentially could be cheaper (albeit I don’t know if I could get a RA-ship that would pay my tuition in the states) than any school I applied to in the states bc it’s only 1 year vs 2 (so only 1 year of no income paying for living expenses and tuition). It basically comes out to you needing 60k (30k for tuition and 30k for living expenses). I also am Applying to a toooon of scholarships (one that could be about 40k). The rest I will take in loans. I’ve just decided that the money is worth it to me because everyone I know who has gone there gets stupidly good jobs at big name organizations (think WHO and inter-American development bank) bc the school has such strong international ties.

Ah thank you so much for all that information! I will definitely reach out to a program director to learn more about the program. I wish you good luck for the rest of your application cycle!

I applied to Epi as well! I think UCLA is great, if I get in I can almost say for sure I'll end up there. Good luck!! Maybe we'll be classmates 😛
I applied to UCLA's Health Policy program. It's a great school but its definitely one of my top choices if I get in. Good luck!

Thank you! You as well! It's definitely the best option for me based on cost + personal factors + it's a fantastic program overall, I think. I see you also applied to Colorado - I'm waiting on them as well!

Are you guys both from the west coast? UCLA and Colorado are definitely one of my top choices!

I am! I live in San Diego, originally from Arizona. I see you applied to UW as well, that's another one of my top choices! I got into Columbia but am pretty skeptical about the $$$ as well as moving cross-country. Having an in-state option like UCLA is a lot more feasible for me.

Agree with you I'm hesitant to move across the country... Your username says you're an outdoorsy person and the west coast is best for that, especially Washington! 😀 I actually went to UW Seattle and even though I wasn't a public health major I'm pretty familiar with the SPH. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer 🙂

Hey y’all,

I was snooping on these forums for a while but then I figured I’d ask some questions some people could answer. I’ve been accepted to Columbia and GW, and while Columbia is my top choice (tied with UW), I wanted to see if anyone had heard anything about scholarships and financial aid from Columbia or GW. I am still waiting to hear back from my other choices on acceptances (then of course scholarships and aid). I would love to go to the admitted student event in March for Columbia if I did choose there. It seems that Columbia released some acceptances earlier than previous years so maybe scholarships and aid are a little behind?

I am as well! Colorado is another good choice for me but I'm not too sure about the weather. lol However, I am looking for a change in scenery which is why I also applied to Emory.
A lot of people are skeptical about Colorado SPH but it's actually one of my top choices. My bf went there for a medical school interview recently and brought back some useful information that was very convincing. Happy to share them over PM if you'd like 🙂

Haha yes I definitely am, I've been rock climbing competitively and pretty intensely outdoors for over a decade. So, the west coast is definitely where it's at, in terms of training facilities and outdoor spots. And ooh that's awesome! If I get in, I will definitely PM you to ask some questions. Moving across the country would be tough...my BF and I are willing to do long distance for the duration of my grad program, but CA to NY is pretty rough. San Diego to Los Angeles, however, is much more manageable.

Also, by the way, I emailed Colorado. They said we should be receiving decisions "within the next two to three weeks." I also checked last year's thread and it appears a lot of people heard back from UCLA on February 3rd-ish.

My boyfriend and I also might need to do long distance depending on where we each get in. We had to compromise on where we apply from the beginning so that we have the best chance of getting into the same school. Now he has an interview in Chicago but I didn't apply to any schools there... +pity+

I applied to Colorado pretty late, pretty much as soon as he got an interview offer there so I hope I can hear back on time. Looks like there's a good chance we could be classmates at any of the same schools we applied to!

If we decide to go to the same school, we'll definitely have to PM each other!

Good luck to both of you guys. Long distance is manageable, my BF was in the military for many years with a couple of super long deployments and it sucks, but if it's temporary then it's OK 🙂 I hope you guys can end up at the same place!

Yes of course, that would be very helpful! I'm looking for some insight into Colorado because it seems like an understated program!

Oh wow. I feel like all the other schools that I'm waiting for are coming out around the same time. I will either do multiple victory dances and cartwheels these next couple of weeks or eat a whole tub of ice cream while thinking about my future. lol

When did you submit your Yale application?

Colorado is one of my top choices too especially since I could possibly get in-state tuition for living in Arizona. I lived there for about 8 years and it's one of my favorite places! Don't worry about the weather, winter can be annoying but the area is SO beautiful and honestly it's only really cold for about 2 months!

I also got an email from them saying I could possibly qualify for in-state tuition!

Also - emailed Harvard to enquire when decisions would be released, and was told that “decisions will be released beginning in mid-February.” Hope this helps! I applied for MPH-65.

Awesome! Would you be cool sending me some of the info your bf got about the campus? One of my friends is doing pharmacy there and she absolutely loves it!

Which school are you considering to attend? Is Colorado one of your top choices?
I honestly have NO idea! I seem to go back and forth every day (maybe every hour???) I've had really great interactions with GW and UNC, so those are probably my top two at the moment, but my decision is going to be largely based on finances. I would love to live in CO though and the program looks interesting! How about you? Is Colorado your top choice?
