MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone! I've been lurking on this thread for a while, and I made an account just to share my news which I wouldn't have been able to do without the help of folks on this thread and on SDN in general - accepted 2/19 to UNC's MPH in Health Policy!!!! My alma mater and I can't be more excited!

Note: Didn't receive an email about the update, but it was on the portal when I checked this morning!

What do people go by for public health school rankings? Like what list is generally the accepted one?

Hey everyone! I just checked the website for Boston (exploresph.bu.edu/FirstnameLastname/Landing) and it says I am accepted!!! On the website, did it notify you of any scholarship information? How do they contact you about scholarships and all of that?
Congrats! May I ask what concentration you applied to? 🙂

Congratulations! 🤗 You should receive an email sometime soon! My portal changed on a Friday and then I received an email on Sunday. The email will have scholarship information in it.

I did, but one of the questions in there is regarding who would sponsor my visa, and I was still thinking of deferring to get my country's government scholarship. I emailed them the other day and got this reply:

Oh wow so they’ve offered all their merit aid already? That’s honestly so upsetting. Now I really have to choose between GWU who gave me a scholarship, Emory who gave me nothing and JHU with MTS 😭😭 I’m about to go to sleep and try this life thing again tomorrow LOL

I'm also really sad about the results so far, but I keep reminding myself to be proud of the schools I was accepted to. Harvard is not the only school of public health, nor is it the best one. We are going to be amazing public health professionals no matter where we go!

@Fashion

Could not agree more. I am of the same opinion. Some of us, including myself first, have been accepted to few of the most amazing schools that we do not deserve or even thought we would qualify for. I know that we all are eternally grateful and humbled by those acceptances and will use every opportunity given, to try to make the world a better place.

lol nooo only the form to apply to REAL 🙁 i didn't get offered anything else. How did you get the MTS from JHU? I was actually so pissed off when I found out that in order to get merit scholarships from JHU you have to indicate it in your application essay -.- so I got in without any scholarship and now I have to set up my CSS profile to get some aid hahaha

lol sorry @mddreamgirl I misunderstood, I mean yeah about Emory they've given it all out already -.- sheez I didn't get any too hahaha

I'm still waiting on one more school, and I'm COMPLETELY torn with my current admission offers. Is anyone deciding between GW and Emory? They both gave me really good scholarships, so there's not a significant cost difference. I just can't seem to decide which one's better 😓 I know Emory is ranked higher, but it seems all the jobs I am interested in are in the DC area, where I already live. But I've been here my whole life and I think a change in scenery would be beneficial, plus Emory gives me work opportunities too. I love both their programs equally 😭

Emory does have a strong network in DC too.

I've heard they were close to finishing up the fellowship lists. I'm probably not on any of those. I most likely don't meet most of the criteria for those fellowships. 😭
No idea about other scholarships...
were we supposed to apply to fellowships separately?

I submitted mine on 1/24, as I just checked my portal, it still looks the same as the typical applicant portal, with the status being "submitted." Hoping it's good news for you tho!
Turns out they left a voicemail too. I just didn't recognize the Idaho number and didn't check the vm until this AM. The woman said she would be sending out an official email soon.

you'll get a separate email likely later today!!! i got both my acceptance & award info yday in separate emails at diff times!
😳 how soon should i expect this email? i must know so i can maintain some form of mental stability or else I'll refresh all day hahahah

Hi - just found this thread as I am also waiting for Harvard. I don’t think any should be too upset yet! I read somewhere that Columbia sends out decisions on a Monday/Tuesday. I was accepted after midnight on a Thursday in early January. I don’t think ADCOMM works like that this year.
While Columbia is my first choice, I’m still waiting to hear from Harvard Health Policy and I can’t find anyone who has heard from that particular program (if I am wrong, please let me know!)
I’ve spoken to Harvard in early February as it is the only school I didn’t hear from, and they assured me Mid February - Mid March and they were releasing decisions differently this year due to difficulties of having ADCOMM all meet in person as they had in years past. Also keep in mind, they did send out a follow up Financial Aid supplement, with a scholarship essay due March 5th.
Only sharing because all of you seem like such incredible, smart and talented individuals. Don’t lose hope about Harvard, Columbia, or any of the schools you are hoping to get into! It’s not over until it is over! You will ALL get in to a great program and your drives are what will make you successful no matter where you are!

Sending hugs and positive vibes! (And if anyone has been accepted to Columbia Health Policy and Management, I’d love to connect 🙂 )

Was the scholarship essay for Harvard? I completed the supplemental financial aid app on myfinaid but I don't think I saw a scholarship essay anywhere?

Hi everyone, this isn't MPH application/admission related, but wanted to share with any fellow public health nerds. The University of Toronto has been hosting a free virtual symposium on population health with scholars from around the world. There's a final session next Friday and focuses on population health science, public discourse and policy! I just attended the one today on emerging insights in health inequity and it was super interesting. Highly recommend!! Hi! I just joined this thread after lurking on it all admissions season! But I’m in health policy and was just accepted to Columbia this week and I’m still waiting on Harvard too. Best of luck, and can’t wait until we finally hear back.

Hi everyone, I finally officially joined — I’d like to start by saying congratulations to everyone on their acceptance and best of luck and good vibes to those still waiting! I’m in at Columbia, Emory, BU, and Dartmouth, still waiting to hear back on Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Yale, And Brown. Should I assume on the ones I’m still waiting for that they’re waitlists or rejections? I applied to Harvard and JH on 11/26, Yale 12/15, and Brown 1/6.

Hi everyone! to those wondering about Berkeley fellowships, I received the Kaiser Permanente Public Health Scholars Scholarship on Tuesday (email subject line: Berkeley Public Health Fellowship Offer) for $15k/year. I didn't have to apply for it separately.

I got accepted into NYU(2/13 + $10K) but rejected by Brown (2/19) in MS Biostatistics. I'm still waiting for contact from Columbia, UCLA, and USC.
Did anyone apply to the same uni and program?

Congrats! When were you accepted / what program?

Edit: nvm i saw on ur profile

This is a more financial based question. Since public health is a super varied field as far as compensation, how are you guys feeling about taking out significant loans? It’s a really scary thing to think about because it’s not the stable career financially in comparison to clinical healthcare professions etc.

When did you hear back from NYU, if you don’t mind me asking? I applied to the MS Epi program, I’m scared to check my email now lol

I'm also curious about this

I had emailed Rollins a few months ago and they said as long as applications are completed (not verified) in SOPHAS by Jan 5 that you would still be considered 🙁 that sucks

I still haven't heard from Columbia, even though it was the first school I applied to. Am I wrong to feel weird about it? Surely if I have been admitted to Yale and BU that I should get into Columbia. I feel like this sounds like a complete first-world problem lol (and I know I should feel lucky and privileged to have gotten into prestigious schools). But it would not be good for my imposter syndrome if I didn't get in.

Not good- but it's looking like that's going to be the case if I want to attend (no scholarship info yet and its late feb, think it's safe to assume I'm not getting any). I've convinced myself I'll probably work in government, and have loan forgiveness at some point, but I'm still very nervous. Planning to have a long discussion with my SO about finances once all decisions/aid is in and make sure I'm willing to go through with the financial commitment. I've also been working full time and trying to save as much as possible, but it's definitely not going to be even close to enough for even the first year.

Ok people, we've got to slow it down. Last years - "2020 MPH Accepted/Applied/Waitlisted.." thread has 85 pages by the end of July. We are over a 100 pages already, and it's only Feb!!!

This is enough empirical evidence that the number of applicants are much more than last year, and the interest in public health has significantly risen. 😎

It could also mean that since there was no GRE, many of us were even more motivated to apply 😉

that none of us have adequate distractions because we are sitting at home in a global pandemic lol

Is there any JHU MSPH Facebook/Groupme/... groups that people are aware of?
There is a linkedin group! David Earle should invite you to it!

I don't think you're wrong for feeling weird about it – It's pretty clear imposter syndrome is common. However, many who applied by/before Columbia's priority deadline (12/1) are still waiting to get a decision. You're likely still waiting because you applied after the priority deadline for Columbia. You applied before/by the priority deadline for Yale and BU, which is probably why you heard back so quickly.

Yep I’m scared but have accepted it mostly 😭. I’ll be saving as much as I can before school starts and working while in school. I’m going to try my best to get a TA or RA position at some point. Also planning on networking and working as hard as possible to ensure I make the most of my MPH and come out of school with a job. Also hoping to work for the government and eventually get my loans forgiven.

Also just got into BU Human Rights & Social Justice via checking the portal! Super excited because it was the last decision I was waiting on and came a month after my most recent ones 😪 Hopefully Columbia sends financial aid info today too and this week ends on a high note!
