MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
High-key disappointed that UT-Houston had a generic acceptance letter for out of state applicants. They mention not having been born in texas in the letter, but I WAS BORN in houston. I just happen to live outside Texas.

Hi guys I've heard back from (almost) all of my programs within the last 10 days so I figured I'd give an update:
Stats: small liberal arts college, BA public health (psych concentration), 3.81 GPA, class of 2020
1 year of undergrad research with 3 conferences and 1 publication, nutrition-based leadership position on campus for 3 years, currently working a research role at a top 10 US hospital

Applied: GW, UNC, Tufts, Dartmouth, Yale, Brown (MPH for all)
Accepted: GW (community-oriented primary care), UNC (health behavior), Tufts (behavioral science/health communication), Yale (SBS)
Waiting on: Dartmouth (interview 1/8/21), Brown

I haven't received financial info from any programs yet but Yale is my absolute dream school and I couldn't be more excited about getting accepted. For anyone who has been getting nervous looking at Yale stats from previous years, I am a recent college grad with pretty mediocre quantitative training, these were my biggest concerns when applying.

Has anyone had their interview with Dartmouth yet? I didn't even know they requested interviews for the MPH program, not really sure what to expect.
CONGRATS!! When did you submit/go under review for Yale?

That's awesome! When did you submit? I submitted on the 10th and haven't heard anything other than that they've received the initial application and will notify me when it is under review
I submitted End of August/September, but got a notification stating all my application requirements were received on 10/20! that was the only thing I received until the admission decision email on 12/20

Cornell Acceptance!! Infectious Disease Epidemiology
Congrats! And could you please tell me what your Cornell quick application status is? Mine was always “In Progress” so I’m kinda worried. Thanks!

Long time silent follower of this page, and today I finally received my first acceptance for GW's Global Health Epi program!

Not sure if this is a good forum too ask this, but I want to make sure there's nothing extra we have to do to receive financial aid from GW? I filled out FAFSA as of a few months ago, and today when I realized I have to do the CSS profile, I quickly filled it out and sent an email to the financial aid office asking if they would still consider it. Are there other things we have to do as well? Congrats to everyone who has also heard back!

Has anyone applying to San Diego State had their transcript updated on their portal yet? I sent about 3 weeks ago and have not seen any updates on my portal.

Wanted some opinions -
I've been contemplating applying to Georgetown as well to have a second option in the DC area but I'm not sure if there is a benefit of Georgetown versus GW if I was already accepted there. I was looking at the MS in Global health at GT vs GW MPH.
Hi! Two great options. I was considering both GW and Georgetown and talked to admissions counselors for both of them. Georgetown admissions told me that most people complete their MS in Global Health part time, as they take a job at Georgetown to help fund their education +loans, while GW is known to give some sorts of merit scholarships. Ultimately, I decided that GW was a better fit for me. Hope this helps!

4-6 weeks seems to be the correct time frame. I applied 11/23 and just got my acceptance today. I would maybe reach out to double check if they have received everything!
Does GW send you an email noting that they have received the application from SOPHAS or that’s it’s been sent to the admissions committee?

Not sure if this has been asked before... but should I update my application and add grades from Fall 2020?

Hi guys for all those who have received acceptances from UIC. Do they send out an email or do you just keep checking the application status portal?

Not sure if this has been asked before... but should I update my application and add grades from Fall 2020?
I asked each program I applied to and SOPHAS, and almost all of them said not to worry about sending updated grades. Columbia and Yale encouraged me to if I could via SOPHAS (but I don't think it is required). UIC said you can just email them your transcripts and they'll attach them to your file. Yale did tell me they might look at my application before those transcripts get in, so it'll depend on the program whether or not they'll consider the updated coursework.

SOPHAS instructed me to submit my official transcripts to SOPHAS and they'll update my file. You can also update your in-progress coursework and add next semester's courses, but this coursework won't be calculated into your SOPHAS verified GPA, so it's up to the programs to figure out your new GPA. I took courses relevant to my programs/statement of purpose, so I chose to add grades & new coursework in the academic section and requested that my university send my transcripts (same way I did when I first submitted transcripts). But again, basically all of my schools said not to worry about it.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know anything about the MS in Epidemiology at Georgetown University?

Cornell has to submit a graduate application on Applyweb right? I mean that one!
Yes correct. I submitted the supplemental application Nov 29. I don't recall having to pay for anything for this supp app.

Thank you! I submitted Dartmouth's application on 11/12 and got offered an interview on 12/09. If anyone has any questions regarding Dartmouth's interview process, feel free to ask me here or PM me!
What was the interview like? Do you remember any specific questions they asked or if they tended to focus more on one area?

Hi, I PMed you! But in general, it was very laid back and focused more on your goals and why you think Dartmouth would be a good fit for your needs.

Good day everyone,

Anyone know of particular scholarships an international student can apply to towards the MPH program?

Anyone know if Columbia's admissions office is open? Students are off through the New Year, but I'm not sure if the administration is off as well or if they are still reviewing applications during this time?

I'm not sure about Columbia specifically, but umich, UIC, and Yale said they'd be closed until Jan 4, so other schools might be the same!

Hi guys, I am a bit worried about my application as I am sending in a few of them late due to circumstances outlined in my SOPHAS (COVID related). Columbia is my first choice, but I am incredibly worried that I won't get in because I missed the priority deadline – I sent my application in on December 6th, however it did not get verified until the 15th. I also am worried that I don't have enough experience for the programs that I am applying to. Are Yale/Brown/Columbia a reach for me?

Undergraduate School/School type: Small, semi-prestigious research university in New England – did a five year accelerated master program.
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.84 (SOPHAS)
Undergrad Major/minor: Psychology Major / Public Health Minor
Grad GPA (if applicable): 3.89 (SOPHAS)
Grad studies (if applicable): Community Development and Planning with a Community Health Concentration
GRE(including date taken): Taken 9/24/2020, Verbal: 159/82%, Quant: 154/51%, Writing: 5/92%. My GRE score accidentally got sent to Yale – hope it does not ruin my chances there. I did not submit it anywhere else.

Experience/research:
- 2 Years on-and-off as lead GIS and data analyst of infant mortality in the mid-sized city my university was in. Worked with UMass medical doctors and presented at 2020 APHA, as well as two other national public health conferences. I did this research during summer break and part-time during the semester.

- Worked on a community health research project in Summer and Fall 2019 on commercial sexual exploitation in the city my university was in. This was done in collaboration with my university and outside organizations.

- Spent two semesters in a language development lab during my undergrad. Researched the reading and literacy development in Spanish-speaking elementary school children. I was mainly tasked with coding the data and doing the regression analyses, as well as presenting at two of my university's conferences.

- Conducted two large GIS research projects during my time as an undergrad: (1) the association between noise/environmental pollution and racial segregation in NYC; (2) access to healthy foods in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods in MA.

- Worked on a community development project for Mass. Development during a semester-long course. I created a community development initiative related to food security and street infrastructure and presented it to members of the community and stakeholders.

Letters of Rec: Professor who taught me during two public health classes towards the end of my undergrad (former Mailman School faculty); One of the directors of my graduate school program (they also taught me in two community development courses); my infant mortality internship mentor who is a teaching doctor at a large medical school.

Interests: Public health methodology (innovative GIS methods). Urban Health.

Applied: Columbia MPH in Sociomedical Sciences (12/15), Yale MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences (12/15), Brown MPH (12/19), John Hopkins MSPH in Health, Behavior, & Society (01/02), NYU (01/02)

lmao get outa here. you have more experience than the majority of people posting here. humble

Right, I just see people with full-time experience and it makes me a little nervous.
plenty of people get into schools without any full time experience! I think everyone comes from a lot of different paths. Your experience seems great though!

Has anyone heard back from University of Michigan yet? When did you apply?
Hi there! It's my understanding that UMich has done about two rounds of admissions in mid-December so far. However, the whole campus is closed until January 4th due to the holidays. I applied 10/15, was verified 10/20, and heard back 12/10, but so far most of the people that I know who have heard back have been current students in either their graduate or undergraduate programs. Hope that helps!

nervous?! Your app is solid!

Hey guys,

For those of you who applied to George Washington University, did you receive an email after you submitted your SOPHAS application from GWU stating that they have received your application? How do we know if they are requesting any additional materials (if needed)? Is there a portal on the school's website to view your progress? Or did you all just simply received a response from them stating whether you have been accepted or rejected?

I got an email when it was under review! It essentially just outlined the timeline, 4-6 weeks, scholarship timeline, etc. I got that email on the December 14th after getting SOPHAS verified on the 12th or 13th of December and got an acceptance email on 12/17. So, it may not be exactly as expected!

Hey, happy new years eve everyone! Has anyone received their invite to interview for Columbia's HPM program yet and/or have you already done it? Just recently received notification that an email invite from a current student should be coming to me for an interview via phone call and I wanted to know if anyone had any experience and if they knew if this means anything aside from being a supplement to their review process. Thanks!

I've received an invite, though I haven't received an invitation. So we're both on the same boat. I believe the students will reach out after the new year.

Is this for the MPH in HPM or another program, like the MHA?

Congrats! When did you get the email notice? I am a bit concerned because I also applied to HPM but didn't receive this, which may have something to do with the fact that I am a dual degree applicant and will technically be on an accelerated track.
I received my notification this week that a student would be reaching out in the coming weeks! However, I did some digging in last years forum and people were even receiving these invites earlier this month. Just hadn't seen any mention of anyone getting one in this forum
