MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

Hi! I applied to a couple schools for MPH in global health including NYU, Brown, BU, Tufts, CUNY, Albany and Georgetown (MS in global health). I submitted all of them yesterday 01/31/21.

I have a 3.2 GPA (poor start to college but upward trend- above 3.5 for the past 3 semesters). I was unsure if I should take the GRE given my low GPA but I registered for the March 1st date anyway. Does anyone have any insight on whether or not I should bother taking it since it's not required? And will that delay my application review until much later? Or will they review it first then hold off on a final decision until they receive my score?

I don't mean to ask this again lol but have more people been accepted to Columbia's PopFam program or have most people not heard back yet from them? Just curious cause I know other programs like Epi and SMS have received their acceptances but I've only seen like 1 or 2 people hear back from PopFam on this forum. Any advice or info is appreciated 🙂

I've followed this thread for a while and finally decided to contribute:
Undergraduate School/School type: McMaster University (Canada)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.65
Major/minor: Kinesiology
GRE(including date taken):Did not take

Experience/research:
- 0.5 year research practicum in lab researching exercise and stroke, wrote a literature review (not published)
- 1 year thesis in the same lab, wrote an original research paper (not published)
- 2 years Athletic therapist for the women's basketball team
- Volunteer for a non-profit as the health and wellness coordinator, promoting health in BIPOC individuals
- Currently working at a tele health company in Canada as a supervisor
- Honestly i volunteered at more little things but these are the main things

Letters of Rec:
- Professor for an Aging course (Got and A in her class)
- Thesis supervisor
- Supervisor for athletic therapy

Interests: African American/Minority Health, Health Equity, Social and Behavioural Health, Influence of Community, Community
Development and Social Environment on Health, Social Determinants of Health

Applied: University of Washington, MPH in Epi (11/18), Emory, BSHES (12/06, routed 01/08), Yale SBS (12/06, complete 01/15), Columbia (12/06)
Accepted: Emory University (02/01), University of Washington (02/05), Yale (02,17) + $$(60k, 25/02), Columbia (02/26)
Rejected: NONE
Waitlisted: NONE
Attending: Most likely Yale, but we'll see

What are some good schools for someone who's interested in research/academia? ( government/large NGOs as backups)

I was in a similar boat when I applied (low GPA, wanted the GRE to bolster my metrics.) If you tell your programs that you are submitting a GRE score, they will hold your application review until that score is received or until you tell them to review it without a score.

Also if it helps with your decision, I don’t think a 3.2 with upward trend is bad as long as you have a decent overall application!

Edit: If you decide you want the GRE to count, I would also check with each program to see the latest date they will accept the score and the latest date you can take the exam.

I think it depends on your concentration. If you are majoring in Epi, I think Emory is one of good choices since it has strong connection with CDC.
I'm not sure about that tho.
 
still contemplating if i should apply to a MS in global health at george town

Just got an email from Brown saying my app is under review but they don't have my FAFSA, though I sent it a few months back. Hopefully can get it smoothed out soon! On the bright side, they said decisions will be sent out in 2-4 weeks!

I got the same email and was equally confused by why they did not have my FAFSA. As with Columbia, I think they may be having data transfer issues.
 
I was told I would receive a decision from Vanderbilt yesterday but instead got an email close to midnight last night saying that they were impressed with my application and would like to have a “conversation” in the next two weeks on my interests. I’m assuming an interview? I guess they want to interview me before a decision is made. Did anyone else get an email like this?

As a current Tulane undergrad in my unbiased opinion New Orleans is the far superior city to New York and Boston. On a more serious note I think the New York lifestyle just isn't for everyone (my brother goes to NYU). I think BU and Tulane both do a better job of having students feel more involved as far as student orgs. At NYU it's very easy to get lost in the sauce. All will give you great opportunities, but I think the environment at Tulane is the most supportive and inviting and presents so many opportunities as there is always someone looking out for you. And the city is absolutely amazing. I'm originally from the Midwest and coming here to experience New Orleans was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. Also cost of living is astronomically cheaper here, which really frees up money to spend on other things. My rent is $550/month in a great location which would be unheard of in New York or Boston!

Some of the schools say they won't review your application until you send in your test scores. So I would recommend reaching out to individual schools. For example on BU's website it says the GRE is not required and they will not review it if sent. So it's probably best to find out the policy at every school before wasting money taking/sending it.

Yeah I'm really considering just canceling the GRE. Should I just remove my expected test date from SOPHAS? Or email the schools individually to start reviewing my app? I'm scared it'll look bad not to back out of taking it.

How is the rest of your application? If you feel decent about it, I wouldn’t bother with the GRE. My GPA is similar, 3.3 but with a very strong upward trend, and I’ve been accepted to both Tufts and BU (didn’t apply to any others on your list) without it. Good luck!

Yeah that's what I'm nervous about because my exam isn't until March 1 and people have already heard back from the schools I applied to. BU is the only one I applied to that won't consider it at all
 
just received 30k scholarship for Yale... I feel like it’s not enough and I really like the program. If you have been accepted, how do you plan on paying and how much in loans will you be taking out so I can get a sense of how much debt I might be in.

It would really help me calm my anxiety over how I am going to pay to go to this school/ having to give up my seat because of cost.

Still waiting for other schools aid packages but now that I have this I just want to make it work ❤️

Can you reach out to the financial aid department to discuss your options? Many schools do TA or RA positions that include tuition assistance and can help with cost. Also try looking into some outside scholarships, they might be able to point you in the right direction.

I’ve accepted at this point I’m going to have to take out a significant portion in loans. My main goal is just to try and keep it under what I hope to be making in a year when I graduate.

I was going to retake the GRE in december and listed that date on my SOPHAS and then ended up being unable to take the exam. When I ordered my GRE scores to be sent to schools they also saw this December date I missed from the score report order. So I doubt it really matters and schools are being ver genuine about being test optional this year.

I'm new here so sorry for posting a lot. I'm not sure the rules or whatever, so lmk if this is too much.

I think the rest of my app is good. My recommenders know me very well so I assume that the letters will be good. I don't have the strongest extracurriculars in terms of clubs (I'm only in 2 clubs but I've been involved with them for many years, one of them is global health related) but I've been doing clinical asthma research for 2 years and have done quite a bit of volunteering and did a public health related internship one summer. I think my statement of purpose is pretty strong. I wrote about having DACA and pursuing global health/infectious disease though I cannot travel. It's deeper than that but you get it.

Anyways, I'm probably biased since it's my app.

I think your app sounds pretty strong, I wouldn’t wait for the GRE if I were you. I think it would be better to get in the pool now, especially since apparently there is a significant amount more applicants than previous years

I am going to try! Yale doesn’t offer tuition remission unfortunately 🙁... so I’m guessing $60k in loans to attend Yale
 
Does anyone know if you have to re-upload your SOP when completing UNC's supplemental application? They have the 'Uplaod Materials' section on my page and im not sure if I should add anything else or if my SOP will come from SOPHAS?
 
Has anyone heard back from UW or UC Berkeley? I know UW said that results will be released by mid-February, but I couldn't find any date for admission results for UC Berkeley

That’s similar to what I’m looking at to attend most schools. It’s a tough pill to swallow.
 
Hi everyone! Sorry I know I’ve asked this before but I’m starting to get nervous and anxious (who isn’t at this point LOL) but has anyone heard anything back from UCLA Epi whether it’s an acceptance, rejected or waitlist? There were a few acceptances a couple days back but since then I haven’t seen anything yet. Apologies again for being repetitive!

I'm looking at the same thing. There are TA positions that students can apply for, though. Incoming MPH students can only teach undergrad classes, and the stipend is about $4,000 a semester. I'm still planning on ~45k/50k in loans for all the schools I'm considering. It has taken a while for me to come to terms with the idea 😅 gotta do what you gotta do I guess.

There should be a link on the supplemental app that allows you to click the department you are applying to. That will tell you what should be included in the supplemental app. I didn't see the one for the program I applied to before I submitted my app, so I just re-uploaded my SOP. But then after reviewing it again after I already submitted it, I saw the requirements.

According to the result page of the grad cafe, generally UCLA and UCB send out its decisions from the end of Feb to early Mar. So don't be too anxious with these schools.
 
For anyone whose Emory app was sent to their second choice, have you heard back yet? If so how long did that decision take from the time of notification?
