MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone who got in. I got into UW epi program as well. Does anyone know the program's cohort size? Any news about scholarship?

Based on this link Epi at a Glance - it looks like they had 45 new Epi MPH and MS students in 2017. I don't believe UW offers merit awards like many private schools (e.g. Yale, BU, etc.), it seems like most students are funded through RA or TA positions that offer tuition remission. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong! I'd love to know more thoughts anyone has on the program.

No - its this landing page link. I thought the same thing too but someone on here provided this link and this is where your landing page is!

https://exploresph.bu.edu/FirstnameLastname/landing (obv sub your first and last name for "FirstnameLastname")
LOL mine says thank you for your application. What is going on? -_-
I haven't 🙁 I submitted my app on 12/1, and it took me emailing them the other week for them to finally put my app in review
I applied in mid-October and they have not been communicating with me. I honestly don't understand what is happening this year!

Feeling really discouraged right now, my SOPHAS application was verified 11/25 and my supplemental for Boston was filled out at the same time. My application didn’t go into review until 1/27 and people who applied in january on here for MCH got acceptances already. i’m getting so worried and frustrated that i haven’t heard anything🥺🥺
Don’t worry! I applied to BU for MCH and got routed for review the same day and am still waiting 🙂 I think different departments are in different times and they may just be releasing slower. Admissions are very slow this year due to covid and what not but hopefully we will hear soon!!

Those who have heard about scholarships from GWU- Did you apply separately? Will we only get an email if we got money, or will we get one saying no money too?

I didn’t apply to anything except FAFSA. They sent me an email saying I didn’t receive any merit based funding.

Is it weird that my BU portal says "Welcome to Boston University" instead of "Thank You for Your Application"? lol

not a super popular choice i know but did anyone apply to UCI? and if so have you heard back

The professor I work with is on the committee for PhD in public health and this morning she told me they are super behind on everything. I assume it’s the same for MPH. Hope you hear back soon 🙂

oh no! dang okay

Does anyone have an idea of what school there mostly going to?
I'm 99% sure I'll go to Berkeley (IDV MPH), but just wanted to wait for more information about the program. Their open house isn't until March, so I'm not sure if I should reach out personally to the program coordinator to ask questions earlier?

Do most schools use waiting lists or do they typically admit enough applicants where that isn't an issue? If I'm not likely to accept the UCLA (Epi) offer, I was thinking about responding earlier if it allows somebody else on a waiting list to get the spot.

That is very kind and considerate of you.

I believe all programs have some sorts of a waiting list.

Also got into BU looking at my portal (went to review on 1/26)!! Still haven't received the email though - will any potential financial info be there? I don't see it anywhere on my landing page.
The portal has the decision?! I haven't checked cuz I was waiting on an email to tell me to check!

I'm 95% sold on Yale. I am just waiting for the unlikely chance that I get full tuition to Emory, Columbia, or GW... So since that is mostly impossible, probably Yale lol
I applied to HPM programs as well. Congrats on your acceptances; it's an impressive list. Why are you set on Yale (with the exception you mentioned)? I'm curious how you came to that decision despite the school rankings (which I know are based on peer scores). I have to make a tough decision, so I was curious what some students' thought processes are. Thanks!

Hi everyone! I have a quick question regarding merit scholarships from GW. I recently got accepted for Epi, and now just waiting for scholarship information! Does anyone know the criteria they use when giving them out?

i asked will lyk when they answer

Let's talk summer internships. What are you all planning to do this summer before grad school in the fall?
I would like an internship, but I’m not going to beat myself up if I can’t find anything. I’m an intern rn with a program on obesity prevention in Hispanic families. So, I’m not too worried about experience. I’ve realized it’s about how you apply those experiences in interviews and whatnot.

Does anyone know how good epi program at University of Washington is? I'm really considering the school's program. I think that that school's program is looked down upon for some reason, probably because it's a public school? I don't know. Too bad I haven't read much about the program on here. Helppppp!!! I can't choose between Emory and UW. I need tons of explanations and suggestions to help me make a decision

May I ask why a public school in public health is looked down upon? Any ideas/suggestions/inputs? Thanks

I'm also curious about this statement. The University of Washington does not need to defend its reputation as a leader in medicine and public health, at least in my opinion. It has been among the top 10 schools for public health for many many many years.

Hello! I went to UW for my undergrad in public health! I’m also deciding between UW and Emory but for behavioral sciences. I can tell you that UW is an amazing school, academically they are competitive. I think it’s not talked about a lot because it’s on the west coast, not that it’s public. The east coast is known for their leadership in public health and UW is at the forefront of it on the west coast. The only downside to UW’s program is that it’s more theory based rather than the hands on opportunities that Emory provides. I mean Seattle does have a ton of public health jobs and organizations, but Emory seems to have a better system of having students apply the methods and foundations they learn in class to the real world. UW also is a large research institution which has its pros and cons. Emory has the CDC and UW has the IHME. Both are great and that’s a rough decision to make! I guess it depends what you’re trying to get out of each program

I began to decide on Yale for a bunch of reasons. I'll put one here, but will PM you with the rest of my thought process. I don't want to spam this thread with the windy road I took to my Yale obsession lol

I was feeling some pressure by the rankings too. Then, when I talked to professors at my own school and others, as well as public health professionals, I started to understand that Health Policy really exists in its own silo. Those rankings don't factor it in as much as the much more traditional public health disciplines. Just think about the quantity of faculty giving peer scores in Epi, MCH, Community Health, Health Promotion, etc. Policy exists in kind of its own world. Yale is one of, if not the, world leader in economics, public policy, and law. Since I'm very much going the politics and policy analysis track, Yale makes sense in that respect. I'd have access to all of those resources outside of the SPH. Hopkins, UNC, BU, etc. are unbelievably strong institutions for PH, but Yale, Columbia, Harvard, and Michigan (if you are looking for more of a management-focus in your education) are more so the leaders in HPM specifically (this is subject to my own research and observations. I'm very sorry if I'm just way off track here.)

Secondly, the way the program is structured to fit you is very attractive to me. The community is so strong and supportive at YSPH that it even impacts what classes you take. I know that I'll leave with an education that perfectly fits my needs, interests, and career path.

Seems to me you know what you want and know what you are talking about.

I also haven't heard back from the MCH at BU and I was verified 12/3 and my application didn't go into review til a week ago 🙁

I GOT INTO UNC CHAPEL HILL!!!! this was such a reach for me, and I am so shocked rn 😀
Congrats that's amazing! I just looked at your info and it's really impressive that you got into MCH right out of undergrad. Now I regret not applying to the MCH program out of fear of not meeting the experience requirement. But also your stats are very impressive!

Emory and Umich are clearly excellent mph programs.

Could anyone discuss why you would choose one over the other? Both of them are ranked similarly on the US News Report. One is private, and the other is public.

Thanks.

Does anyone know what the graduate financial aid package for Emory is like? I’ve heard conflicting information and I’ve done a bunch of research and still can’t find a conclusive answer. I know about REAL as well, how likely is one to receive this?

Is there an income cut off or merit based or a combination? I’m looking for some stats and numbers on this if possible! $71K is a lot 🙁

This is a situation I am considering as well. As I continue to hear back from schools, I know my MPH won’t be my terminal degree as I’m hoping to apply to med school this upcoming cycle. These are the things I’m considering that might be helpful to you as you figure out finances and etc.:

1) When do you plan to apply and matriculate to medical school?
2) How are your stats so far? Would your app be considered competitive without your MPH?
3) Do you want to go to medical school at any of your MPH schools?

JHU is also my top choice for MPH, but I also wouldn’t mind going to my state program because it’s tied with a decent medical school and I would save money lol. I’ve been told the JHU connections can be quite useful— at least, that’s what I’ve heard from an MS3 who took a research year. He said it helped him match into an emergency medicine residency he otherwise was not very competitive to due to borderline STEP 1 scores (before they went P/F). But I have also seen and been told that your connections, which can be made during your MPH, are also useful if you plan to attend medical school there too.

Just my two cents from going through this journey with my partner who is an untraditional medical student. I see we have some various first-person medical student opinions which are so good to have as well!

Planning for med schools app is the most stressful process that you will go through. It is a zillion times more stressful than mph app. At the time when I went through the process, I actually went through 2 app processes for 2 different medical fields. Life will take you to the best path just for you.

Good luck.
